In today´s "Blast from the Past" we have the Legendary Ford Escort RS2000 F1 RX, the ultimate creation of "Mr. Rallycross" Martin Schanche, full of Formula 1 parts and bespoke technology (in the 90´s), one of our favourite cars ever, here in what was probably its only experience in Hillclimb Racing, at the one-off event at Lillehammer, held during the 90´s, which pitted Norwegian and Swedish Rallycross competitors against each other.
Arguably the pinnacle of Martin Schanche´s creations and the ultimate representation of 90´s Rallycross, while quite simple looking, this Escort is as unique as they come. Extensive use of Formula 1 parts like the Rear Spoiler, double wishbone rear Suspension with magnesium uprights (all taken from a Arrows A12), pedal set and much more, added to the fact most of its chassis was spaceframed, made this a very light machine tipping the scales at under 900Kg, having to use, at the time ,135Kg of ballast to conform with FIA regulations .
Using the Mk6 RS2000 instead of the more commonly used Escort RS Coworth as base due to its bigger engine bay area, it is powered by a short stroke Cosworth YB producing around 600Hp/8.500Rpm in restricted form, but capable of over 800Hp/10.000Rpm when used in its full capacity. All this power was then transferred to all four wheels by what was at the time a tremendously advanced All Wheel Drive system built in conjuntion with Xtrac. This Monster was possibly the embodiment of over-engineering, but also proof of how talented the mercurial Norwegian Rallycross Legend was as an engineer, a side most have forgotten over time. While it is easier to remember the on-track antics of Mr. Schanche and his temperamental nature, it is far more valuable to recognize the contribution he had to Motorsports as a whole. The RS2000 F1 RX is on our opinion the best example of that...

Great knowing this car still exists. Schanche was the best rallyx driver to have ever done it. Legend.

It's kinda hilarious sometimes, as a Norwegian having grown up in this era, the commentator just brings back so many memories, he basically commentated anything about sports it seems, as he's basically the voice I connect to anything winter olympics, whenever Norway was dominating skiing. His co-commentator sounds like it's Tommy Rustad, who also competed in Rallycross in the late 80s, but went to STCC in the early 90s. Though most my memories of Schanche is earlier, when he competed in his RS200, I didn't remember too much about his earlier Escort as it was before my time, well.. he was racing a lot before my time, but my dad had a lot of VHS tapes of his racing in the 80s. But early 80s when Schanche was racing, he was becoming frustrated with the AWD Audis that suddenly showed up in Rallycross, and that's where I first heard about Xtrac, he built a 560hp Escort MK3 with Xtrac AWD to get back at the Audis.

A lot of commentators got it wrong, well... foreign ones that is, so many British ones calling him basically Shanky, or Shanshy. :P ( Also sorry about commenting on such an old post, just felt the urge to point out that you did better than a lot of other English speakers, as he competed a lot in the UK so we heard his name butchered a lot. :P )

Martin was absolutely fearless. He had balls the size of bowling balls. He once went round the outside of the first turn banking at Lydden, think he got tapped off by a competitor and just kept his foot in rather than turn round.

Wrong car🙂 the car that he used in 1994 was the “RS2000 T16 X-Trac” the one in this video is the F1RX which was built for 1996🙂 My dad owns and is restoring the T16 to 1995 spec. The T16 is the car that Ludvig hunsbedt won with in 1997 and Martin in 1995🙂

Escort is 4WD ? 2WD ? ???
@Santor-
@Santor- 3 года назад
Factory escorts were fwd. Cosworth was 4wd. But Schanche developed his own 4wd system, with fully adjustable stepless 72/28% to 50/50% on the fly torque vectoring front/back, called XTrac. 100% control with a second lever on the transmission. Is what all race cars use nowadays. He was just first out, as he came up with it, and had it custom built.
