So this was my truck that I shipped to Brian. 2005 with 122k miles, oil changed religiously every 3k miles alternating between Mobile 1 and Royal Purple. Timing service with OEM Ford parts and HV oil pump was installed 20k prior, I was talked out of doing the rollers at the time by my mechanic. Truck started to progressively go down on power and noise would just get louder. I already invested quite a bit into it and would rather ship it to Brian to fix than buy a new truck. With this fixed I should be good for another 100k easy. 4k for service and round trip transport. Truck runs like NEW, Thank you Brian!!

I had a tapping sound just like that on my 4.6 3v. I tracked it to cyl 5, pulled the cover and inspected everything. I ended up pulling and testing all the rollers and lifters on the driver's side. Nothing was broken. I was fearing a noisy valve so I went to pull the spark plug to put a camera in th cyl to see what th valves and piston top looked like. The spark plug was loose enough I could spin the socket with my fingers. A loose spark plug ended up being the the source of the noise. Lesson of the day, don't forget to start with the easy stuff first. 😩 Anyway, thanks for all the vids FTM.

Notice how small that "new" follower oil hole is = your oil needs to be exceptionally clean to get thru that hole. =Change your oil and filter more than you think you need to do and use a high quality synthetic oil. -And this person changed his oil real well (super clean engine).
@bsovan
@bsovan 2 года назад
This is my truck, oil change every 3k miles alternating each time between Mobil 1 and Royal Purple. I would also add a qrt of Lucas added with Miracle Oil . Couple hundred miles before oil change I would add Seafoam in the crankcase.
@garymcmullin2292
@garymcmullin2292 2 года назад
I have the same concerns about that super small diameter oil hole. I foresee the possibility of tiny bit of some carbon or lint or any other odd ball foreign matter plugging it up and you know what is going to happen then! I even wrote Makuloco about this and considered trying to drill them out. Turns out the steel is hardened and that small a bit would be breaking regularly. Makes it worse that the original hole was done before the roller bearing was installed and the angle cannot be matched now if I did attempt to redrill.

Awesome video! I just picked up an '06 F-250 4x4 with the 5.4 3v with 124,000 miles. I was hesitant to buy it because of the failure prone 5.4 but for a largely rust free 4x4 F-250 $5,200 was too good to pass up. I know at some point I'll likely need to bulletproof it and I'm glad to know that such a competent tech is only 90 miles away from me. Keep up the good work and may your 2024 be blessed!

I love your videos. I live in Texas so everything comes apart easy and no rust to deal with. I lived in New Hampshire for years and felt like more of a rust repair man than a mechanic. I own a 2014 EL King Ranch 4x4 that I did a timing set at 120k. I just bought a 2008 EB 2wd. And I bought it cheap with a terrible timing rattle. I have it torn down now and bought the parts with your links, including the oil pump. The odometer reads 220k and two of the guides were completely gone. Some chewing in to the oil pump, case, block, head, crankshaft tone ring, ect, but nothing serious. The engine had all ford parts and the phasers were still good. The drivers side tensioner had come apart. I’m doing all new ford parts including starter, water pump. There is only a small bit of scoring on the passenger side came caps. Only on 2 of them all the others look great, really great for the mileage. All the roller followers looked great and I was going to reuse them until I saw this video. Thanks again for all your great videos and info. I get requests a lot to make videos of some of my repairs and I’m still thinking about it. I have a great fix for electric running boards and a few other quirky things on fords. Maybe one day I’ll get around to posting them.

as a retired Mechanic of 48 years i always used OEM unless Customer wanted different - and honestly when i retired from the field ( even Diesel ) the one Engine i never had or got the chance to Rebuild was the Zero set Static Timed Engines - when those started on the market was about the time i went to Diesel until retirement - any major work like this i would always state to replace all components not just what is wrong or it will be back for service shortly after with more problems -- i would even pull the oil pan on some cases to see if any damage in the bottom half of the engine ( crank shaft , end caps , connecting rods , Main Bearings ) my motto was if its not right it does not leave !!! seen many fast repairs go horribly wrong

Good video ... I bought my '09 with 158,000 kMs. I have done the front end a couple of times, but never the phasers or roller followers. I just had them done this summer, at 596,000 kMs. While it has always sounded noisy since I bought it, I cannot believe the difference in how quiet it is now. In checking all of the old followers, there were only a couple that felt like they might be a little looser than the rest but not to the point they felt rough, even once the oil was washed out of the needle bearings. And once I cleaned a phaser out and re-assembled it, without the spring, it no longer would slide back and forth. I strictly use Castrol full synthetic oil, 5-30 for the past 80,000 kMs or so. I do have a HV Mellings pump. Personally, I think that this is a great engine, and with the service it has given me, how could I ask for more? I am surprised that there is not really much performance work done with it, but hey, we have all of the coyotes I guess !!!

@@scottb3637 I'm not sure how much is different from the early 4.6 2V engines to the later 5.4 3V, but those sure as heck take abuse! I had a bit of detonation with nmy 4.6 Mustang GT as I tried to tune mine and it never broke a piston or rod. Whew! LOL. After I ran it turbocharged a while I returned it to stock and my daughter drove it until she was able to afford another car. It still ran when she sold it.

I bought a Lincoln navigator with a 5.4 121000 miles, I replaced the lifters and rocker arms (roller followers) on the left side and after I was done put everything back together it sounded and ran real nice but after a couple minutes it started pushing coolant out the rad. No over heating as far as I know of. I put 800 miles on it myself since I bought it.

With the increased back pressure they provide would you still recommend switching to the Melling M360HV oil pump or do you think the OEM pump will suffice now? Thanks again.

I'm not so sure it was a mistake. The first shop skimped on changing the followers and probably charged the customer for them. I've been the victim of this before. Also, there was no marks on the phaser and timing chain where they would have timed it up. To me, that is worrisome that it wasn't timed right on top of it.

Especially when it comes to timing components. The OEM puts millions of dollars and hundreds of man hours into research and development for these parts. I am lining up parts for a full timing job and bought the set of followers with lash adjusters you recommend. When I got the package I opened and looked at the follower oil hole....man that is sooooo small, it worries hell out of me that the tiniest bit of foreign material is going to block it and cause a burned up follower. The new style, if I am right, is 3L3Z-6564-A. The old style I do not have on hand to look at, 3L3Z-6564-BA, but some images on various parts sellers shows a large hole shooting straight up from the lash adjuster. This is in contrast to an angled hole that shoots over to the roller on the latest design. I like the idea of the directed oil squirt, but that tiny, tiny hole is going to keep me up nights. Does a guy dare drill out that hole a bit bigger or can it even be drilled if that is hardened steel? I am going to install the Melling M340HV pump and the old style steel ratchet timing chain tensioners so I suspect oil delivery will be plenty adequate and dependable even if I go back with the old style roller followers. I am thinking about buying a few more or the new style and see how they would drill out to slightly bigger. Any thoughts you would be willing to share?

@@FordTechMakuloco thanks for your quick reply and possibly you are correct. I do not know how long the revised followers have been in the market place, whether enough time has passed to see how they work out. My truck ( A 2001 F150 XLT 5.4 w/ 260,000 + miles) just started this ticking, So from your advice I should just take this as an opportunity to change the cams, rockers, and lifters? Should I also change out timing chain, tensioners etc? Water pump? The engine still runs strong. So your word will determine which way I go with this.
