You guys should do a local tow test, which is what these two trucks were meant for, not long distance highway towing -- they're not 800 volts or higher yet (400 plus miles range and 300kw charging). Just start with a 100% full battery with an 8,000 pound load or so, and see how long (how many hours) it would take to run it down to lets say 10% or even all the way to 0%. By local, I mean towing within the town or just outside of it and back where you have to hit lights and stops signs often. Or even within one town to another close by and back without using the highway.

There’s a quick and easy way to calculate it: the battery holds 115 net kwh that can be discharged. If you charge it to the recommended daily maximum of 80% state of charge, then only deplete it to 10% state of charge because of range anxiety and decreased power output at low states of charge, 70% usable daily is 80.5 kwh. That will get you as far as 8.05 gallons of gas will. So if you’re currently getting 10 mpg with a 6,000 lb load, you’ll likely get a range of 80 miles.
@andys31337

@@ldmcnutt not really, in a city there's alot of "start-stop" driving where the EV will regenerate alot more power than on highway. Needs to be tested to quantify it.

The better efficiency towing in the F150 could actually be related to why it's less efficient not towing - the F150 is a larger vehicle, and thus creates a larger air gap for the trailer to "draft" in vs. the Rivian. Therefore, the towing aero penalty is less on the Ford vs. the Rivian.

There's no way to make DC Fast charging profitable with the current model of remote self serve chargers in obscure parking lots. The industry needs to switch to the gas station model of manned pull thru, well lit chargers along the freeway/highway with a convenience store attached, and possibly even a waiting room/ lounge and restaurant . That way you have profitability from the convenience store and restaurant. The waiting room could also have a EV on display from a manufacturer that paid for placement, with a sales rep to answer questions and even take orders via online.

@thomasklein4265

@ab-tf5fl
@ab-tf5fl 2 года назад
@@thomasklein4265 There are several factors that make EV charging difficult from a profit standpoint, which don't apply to gas stations. Way fewer EV drivers on the road than gas car drivers. Charging stations cost way more to install than gas pumps. Avoiding expensive "demand charges" requires expensive batteries. Etc. Also, a public charging station will never be able to match the per-kWh price of home charging, so even if every car is an EV, their customer base will be limited to people going on road trips. And, as the range of EV cars increases, the distances people will be able to travel without needing to visit a charging station will increase as well. Put it all together, making a profit off of a charging station is difficult, and probably requires an adjacent business people shop at while they charge. But, adding full-time human staffing doesn't solve any of these problems. It just make them worse, by adding one more expense to be paid for. Even gas stations generally don't have human attendants in most states. That's why they call it "self serve gasoline".

Be curious to see you guys repeat this test with a travel trailer (6000-8000 lbs) in the future. 5:43 This might actually work in the R1T's favor because something that TFL uncovered doing their Ike Gauntlet test is that the R1T's regenerative brakes appear to trigger electronic trailer brakes while the Lightning's tow mode disables that. There was a significant difference in the amount of energy each truck recovered on the downhill.
@tw_lb
@tw_lb 2 года назад
Wouldn't that mean there is energy turned into heat by the trailer brakes in the R1T whereas that energy could be regenerated on the Ford?
@newscoulomb3705
@newscoulomb3705 2 года назад
@@tw_lb Yes, that is most likely why the R1T regenerated so much less energy on the downhill than the Lightning. Essentially, Ford programmed their tow mode with electronic brakes in mind, but Rivian might not have. Inertia brakes should level the playing field for this test.
@tazeat
@tazeat 2 года назад
In this particular test that wouldn't really matter, the uhaul trailers have surge brakes which are not directly controlled by the tow vehicle so any mode selection wouldn't make any difference on trailer brake application. (Surge only apply when the tow vehicle slows enough that the pressure on the hitch increases beyond the engaging threshold, not from any electronic signal).
@newscoulomb3705
@newscoulomb3705 2 года назад
@@tazeat Yes, so I believe they would nullify any advantage the Lighting would have for this test. The R1T's reduction in regenerative braking power, though, was something I hadn't seen before, and it could definitely explain some of the efficiency difference observed in this test.

43:06 Frankly, if I were driving a Bolt EV through CO, I don't know that I would ever use Electrify America. There are enough >150 A ChargePoint units along I-70 that you never really need to deal with the EA drama. Not only are the sites a bit more diverse and better for travel, those new CPE250 units also activate in just a few seconds. Regardless, EA is definitely going to need to up their Interstate sites to a minimum of 6 chargers, but if they're going to take the time to upgrade an existing site, they should probably make the new Interstate site minimum 8 to 10 chargers. Also, the side benefit is that they don't have to worry as much about 100% up time.

I think things are going to start getting a lot better very quickly with that latest GM-EVgo partnership announcement. Looking at the initial site placements, it adds a lot of redundancy across the country. I actually had to charge the other day, but there was a line at my local Electrify America site. Drove over the freeway to the EVgo site (which was empty), charged up for about 20 minutes, and continued on.

These EA charger issues along this stretch of I-70 leads me to thinking this may just be a bad batch of ABB units. They probably came from the same production lot and were installed within months of each other. Charger screens freezing and even turning off means it's almost definitely a hardware issue. If you had more time, maybe a remote restart from EA over the phone could have helped things. Also, next time please use some GoPros! It's so much easier to see and safer than having someone hold up their phone. At least you had one camera operator; but a set of 3 GoPros (which I've seen in other videos) would do wonders.

They need to start making chargers pull-through, like most gas station pump islands. I can also see putting solar panels on the roof to add to the power and provide shade or cover from rain while charging. Moreover, I'd like to see the advent of megawatt chargers, of course manufacturers will need to figure out how to accommodate that power delivery level.

After having gone on road trips with Tesla and comparing that experience to what I'm seeing here, seems like I have to wait to pull the plug on a non-Tesla EV. With Tesla, I put the destination and the car calculates the best path including all charging stop, min charging time to continue trip to next stop, setting up direction steps that includes the stops and time to reach so on. I'd find anything less than that quite challenging. Tesla tells me # of total stalls, # of available stalls and capacity as well (at not just the auto selected charge stops, but at any other charge stops, I may want to look up in the area). Are non-Tesla EVs still only optimized for local driving and specific trips to few hundred km out of town? A complete mapping software with auto charging stops is essential for ev road trips. Btw, I've been binging your videos over the last few weeks... your videos are some of the most impartial review of anything on RU-vid. Thanks for your hard work and entertaining videos.

Little Tommy of TFL gave you guys a little put down in their Lightning ⚡ video. He said: " Oh, we could have strapped a water tote to a flatbed to test range, but we do real-world range tests, and people haul these travel trailers." Maybe he doesn't realize that some people haul flatbed trailers with loads just like this. I just love TFL's arrogance!

I think the TFL test was too over the top with those massive tall trailers with an insane amount of drag. That's not the use case of electric trucks, no one is going to be dumb enough to tow something large like that with the range limits. A U-Haul, construction trailer, or boat around 4000 lbs is more reasonable/what people with electric trucks would actually use it for.

21:02 Uhaul trailer speed limit sign: “speed limit 55”. Haha. Just a recommendation. I recommend a third strap that restrains sliding forward should you have to brake hard. Strap from base of tank to rear of trailer. I guess that full tank sliding to front of trailer wouldn’t be good for the hitch or truck frame.

Those water tanks look a bit too far back which is why the tongue jumps up and down on the ball. That is how trailers come unhitched. Centered over the front axle would be better to keep a positive weight on the ball. The way you tied the tanks down also doesn't keep them from sliding back and forth. 2 straps pulling forward and 2 straps pulling back would keep it in place.

Definitely shows better more reliable charging infrastructure is what is needed. I cannot believe there is chargers that haven't been fixed in 6+ months is that due to the supply chain issues I wonder. As you mention BMW Hawaii a Spotto drives past(yellow vehicles are called that in Australia). It's not the car that isn't working it's the charging infrastructure, perhaps penalties for providers who don't get their chargers fixed within a specified period of time is one way and a required up time like you mentioned of 97% for a single charger not site would be also good.

Hi guys - thanks for the great videos. I live in Coachella Valley, which is desert territory. It’s extremely hot out here in the summer. I have a large sun roof in my Highlander now, but I leave the sliding shade closed in the summer due to the heat from the summer sun. It looks like the Rivian doesn’t have a shade to cover the sun roof. Is that going to be an issue in 100+ degree days? Cheers.

I drove my R1T today and temps were 104F. The aircon was set to auto, and the fan kicked up to half speed. Mine has heated and cooled seats, so the seat cooling works really well. The roof blocks 98% of light. Some folks in Arizona put additional tint on the roof to keep it cooler, and I have also seen a video where there's a sunshade that has suction cups that can cover the roof, blocking out all light.

Did I miss it? Are there any critique about how the Lightning did with regen on the down-hill sections? Kyle mentioned the Rivian need friction brakes but did hear anything about the F150. Also interesting that though the Riving has a higher peak charging speed that the F150 seemed to be charging faster(?). 1st stop especially- F150 showed up last and was 1st to 81%

Didn't your F150 have the backup assist, at that trim level? That makes backing up any trailer a snap, the truck steers itself. And talk about range anxiety, 107 miles of range on a 91 mile trip? That's cutting it way too close - one traffic jam and you may find yourself on roadside, dead. No thanks. And while Chick Fil A is definitely at the top of the fast food quality, there's nothing wrong at all with Golden Corral.

It is for sure here in the U.S sadly. However tesla has a few of the larger station's with canopies and pull through chargers for towing. Ea is debuting a couple of those type of station's with solar canopies, battery storage and pull through pump style station's later this year. So by next year they plan to have dozens of them open. I imagine other's will follow shortly. Plus bucees and sheetz are installing tesla chargers in many states now.

You should have set a timer when you pulled into the charger to see how long it actually took. Way too long for a road trip. Maybe Tesla has more reliable chargers cutting down the time, but in your case, too many issues just getting them to work.

The hood opening was kinda glossed over. Not cool when a hood pops. Can be extremely dangerous. I imagine it shouldn’t be able to open while in motion for safety. Although i do know the latest corvettes have a problem with hood opening by accidentally hitting the hood open button on the key fob.
