Fun experiment! If the Rivian tows another Rivian, when you run out of power, you can swap out which truck tows which, and get right on your way - no charging station needed. Then, when charging, you power up both Rivians at the same time on different charging stalls. Now, the fun question becomes, how does total trip time and energy efficiency compare with having two Rivians take turns towing each other vs. having them drive separately? On the one hand, you have additional weight overhead from the trailer. On the other hand, you should theoretically have less combined air resistance. I would love to see Kyle conduct and experiment so we can find out.

Being in Europe for the amount of time Kyle was there for and experiencing all the fantastic charging stations they have there then returning to the USA with our abysmal charging stations must feel like a kick in the balls. I imagine it's a similar feeling in regards to just paying for things in stores in EU vs USA as well.

If I would not live in Europe, but in the US, I would never consider buying an EV that’s not a Tesla, bc of the charging network. But maybe Tesla will open their Superchargers like they do here. And the Electrify America Network will improve, so my point won‘t exist no more in the future, sure thing. I love this channel, bc it‘s interesting to see when and how it will improve and if I can go there some time on holiday renting an EV.

If you think USA is abysmal have a look at how poor the charging infrastructure is in Western Australia. There are usually only 1 or 2 chargers at each location, so we are probably a decade behind!

Directly from the R1T manual: "The R1T can tow up to 11,000 lbs using a weight distributing hitch, and up to 5,000 lbs using a standard hitch." 9/10 times I see owners of light duty trucks towing 6,000+lb loads with normal hitches. With the loads you guys haul you should probably always use a weight distributing hitch.

@@brandenflasch he mentioned at 2:55 that he probably didn’t need one for this load as it was only 5,500 lbs. I see so many light duty truck owners towing 7-9,000lbs with a regular hitch. They’re not rated for that.

electric towing isnt a problem...its the long distance that hits the problem zone. My specific example is a 2017 90d. with my travel Trailer i can go about 125 + on a full charge but then that is where the problem starts. To make it to the next supercharger you have to almost always charger to 100% and some distances are too much for tesla to tesla charger and must find other alternatives. All of the added time matters when on vacation :)

I admire your wish o keep your Range Rover in Great shape but why not convert it to Electric? There is a UK RU-vidr who runs a shop where they convert classic cars into EV's. For the amount you spent you coulld be running on a virtually silent Range Rover ha could also Tow More, Go Off-roading without disturbing the wildLife, AND IN General, Drive GREENER!

Tesla also has some low charge pet mode issues but it can always be activated via the app.

DEFINITELY need a different strap situation. At bare minimum you need a tail strap to take more of the force while braking. Can recommend the straps that loop around the tire with a ring.

First, I love your videos! Literally all your testing, it's pretty awesome. Anyway the reason I wrote. I'd recommend you carrying a few traffic cones maybe at least 3-4 to mark along and at the end of the trailer, I'm not a lawyer, but I could see how that could help keep you out of legal trouble if someone hits the trailer while charging.

Re: Not easily finding the charging stations in parking lots… On my 5,500 mile cross country trip in my Model 3 SR+, I had this situation a few times. Tesla’s Navigation did an awesome job plotting my trip, SoC on arrival, time and % needed before moving on… but getting me to the supercharger sometimes was short of getting all the way to it. Solution: Apple Maps “Hey Siri navigate me to the Tesla supercharger in Grand Junction.” Maps would then give me precise turn by turn directions to the exact spot. Simple and it always worked.

On the R1T there is no need to press the trip reset button multiple times. Touching the button just once is all that is needed, but the energy consumption will take a couple seconds to go to zero after that.

That charge port door was a huge design mistake. What is wrong with a simple manually operated door? ICE cars all have manual doors and for the most part work flawlessly

I agree. At least Tesla's charge door is in the rear of the car and less susceptible to damage. Putting a charge pore in the front corner of an off roader is just asking for failure.

It’s fascinating how some “150kw” EA chargers (mainly the older ones) won’t even output 150kw, while others (mainly the new ones) will output over 170kw. Even on an 800V car.

You must have money flowing out of your pockets for such a hobby. Can’t imagine be attached so much to a car to do a total rehab so one can keep driving it. Then after spending $6K it dies. Should have sold it a the mechanic’s shop! Interesting on towing with the Rivian. Maybe you should stick to the Rivian as your base driving car. At least it’s still under warranty. What was the direction of the wind when you were hauling Judy? Wondering how it might a affected efficiency??

i have the same Andersen hitch on my 10k tandem trailer that weighs in at 3k lbs empty. nice WD hitch setup, and I've used a few.

I get anxiety just by listening to Kyle dealing with the anxiety of charging, eating, disconnecting, reconnecting and so on just to travel a couple of hundred miles. I believe that electric technology is wonderful but for the amount of money and hassle it doesn't cut it for me yet.

Ik this just sounds like every other tesla fanboy but its a whole different experience with tesla, you just plug in and walk away thats it you dont have to do anything, we just charge at home so the night before i set the charge to 100 and when we wake up we pack the car then leave, we have a tesla model Y and we can drive from San Francisco area (where we live) to Lake tahoe in nevada which is about 240 miles. We arrive with 20-30% and just use the plug either in a garage at a house we stay at or a hotel charger and its so easy.

I road trip a fair amount with our Tesla Model 3 LR AWD, and Jake is right, the computer calculates all the navigation and charging stops etc. In dead winter here in Canada at the very worst I go two or three hours down the road, stop for 20 to 30 minutes and get a coffee and pee or watch YT videos or take a walk, and am off again. I hate Tesla but I have to admit, the road trip is totally fine. Kyle is going deep in the details and making it a little dramatic for views, which is understandable. But it's really no biggie in daily life.

Besides your ‘tie-down’ integrity I was a bit concerned about your weight distribution. Looked like it could be unstable as your weight was slightly aft. @@robertoconnor3683 Some small percentage of the weight will be transferred to the towing vehicle but with the load C of G forward of the trailer axle most of the weight is still taken by the trailer wheels.

Towing with EV would be great ==if there was no diesel or gasoline. The charging infrastructure is so bad in this country. They are going to need so many pull thru chargers for all these Lightning and other ev trucks.

It's simple. The electric providers want you to have an account so that they can have all of your personal information. That way they can get extra money from advertisers who flood your email inbox. 😏

Minutes add up to hours, hours to days, days to months, etc. For those times I could have already bought my dinner, took a peepee, bonded with my family.

Imagine all the time that you spend refueling at gas stations that EV users don’t ever have to do. Minutes add up to hours, hours add up to days, etc. Road trips represent such a small vehicle usage for the vast majority of people. For the length of my daily commute, I’d be at the gas station 3x per week. With an EV, I charge it overnight so I don’t have to waste time at the gas station every few days. People with no EV experience get so stuck on these mostly irrelevant talking points in a desperate effort to try and confirm their bias. It’s sad.

Just keep an eye on your weight limits I thought it was only 1832 pounds , the Range Rover is 2.1 tons , plus trailer I think you were going unintentionally over weight

It sounds like you are mixing up carrying capacity (load in the truck) with towing capacity. The Rivian can tow up to 11,000 pounds.

A Range Rover from 1991 that hasn’t exploded or completely turned to dust is definitely a classic. And a ticking time bomb (as Kyle is finding out). The fact that businesses can make a good living by working on *only* Land Rover shows how unbelievably unreliable and expensive they are. (Coming from someone who used to work on them)

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. I think it's "fine". But I think some other brands vehicles are ugly that other people think are some of the best looking vehicles around, so...
