Ford F-150 TREMOR vs Chevy Silverado ZR2 - This is the one I buy and why

The brand new 2022 Silverado ZR2 is finally revealed and it comes with a 420-hp, 460 lb-ft of torque 6.2-liter V-8, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory off-road tires, and upgraded dampers. It now also has a front electronic locking differential in addition to the rear locker.
Above those and the skid plate you have a high-mounted steel front bumper which adds to the off-road look of the truck but also helps to achieve the 31.8-degree approach angle.
That’s more than you get with any other Silverado including those fitted with the Z71 or Trail Boss Off-Road packages with their standard 2.0-inch lifted suspension.
In fact, the ZR2 is half-inch taller than a Trail Boss and is only available as a crew-cab with either the short- or standard-length beds.
The new ZR2 features a new black hood insert and graphics, a new grille design with integrated daytime running lights, a bunch of ZR2 badges, and 18-inch wheels wrapped in 33-inch tires.
On the inside, you now have a 12.3-inch fully digital gauge cluster alongside a beautiful 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
There’s no info on pricing yet for the 2022 Silverado ZR2 but expect it to be close to the current top-of-the-line High Country, which starts around $55,000. The ZR2 is expected to go on sale in the spring of 2022.
The 2021 Ford F-150 Tremor is powered by Ford's 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 and puts out 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque paired with a 10-speed automatic. It’s the only engine option for the Tremor and it’s also only available with a 5.5-foot bed. It only comes with a rear locking diff and not a front, like you get in the ZR2.
There are three levels of the 2021 F-150 Tremor and if you want the new 12.0-inch touchscreen and 12.0-inch gauge cluster you’re gonna have to go with one of the two top levels where you get those as standard.
The Tremor is lifted an inch in the front and an inch and a half in the rear thanks to a new suspension and shocks. The wheels are 18-inches in a matte finish and just like on the ZR2 you have 33-inch tires here as well but FOrd decided to go with General Grabber all-terrain tires for the Tremor.
The front end of the Tremor is beefier than on your normal F-150 and you also have these beautiful orange details and graphics both on the exterior and interior. Pricing starts around $51,000 for the base level Tremor.

MSRP for a Raptor starts at $65K. So does the ZR2 and it's far less powerful and less capable than the Raptor at the same price. The Tremor actually wins for value of money since it starts at around $49K and you still get a lot of payload capacity and towing capabilities along with offroading.

@@krissimon2502 I said MSRP for the Raptor and ZR2 neither of which are going to be real world numbers unless you find a dealer willing to sell at MSRP. The Tremor fully loaded is still the price of a base price MSRP ZR2 not loaded with anything. The real world ZR2 price will probably be around $80K as well. Both the Raptor and Tremor are still better options fully loaded or not, MSRP or not.
@krissimon2502

@@pacman1789 the zr2 only comes in one configuration which is fully loaded with all the options, but you are right about all these trucks will be going over MSRP at the dealerships. I know they say the raptor starts at 65k but you will never find a raptor with a msrp of 65k out there. They will have some options included to bump up the price to at least 75k MSRP. At least chevy doesn't play that game with the zr2 they give you a fully equipped truck at a set MSRP.

I ordered an Atlas Blue mid-level Tremor last month, the deal makers for me were Ford's 360 camera system with that 12 inch screen, the Pull-Out Tailgate Step with a Handle, the Torsen front axle, the 6 Aux switches, Trail Turn assist, all the off-road drive modes, and the Ford dealer wrote the deal up with $3000 off (Military and previous Ford buyer).

Not many people realize how Ford includes past stylinf cues to their trucks. If you look at the front face on and then look at a 9th Gen ('92-'96), you will see a similar look, but you have to look at it for a bit. The rear taillights are very similar to the 12th Gen ('09-'14) model. Interesting review, thanks for doing. You seem to be styling focused so let me add a couple important points I think you missed on functionality. Tremor does have an optional Torsen front differential borrowed from the Raptor. It also uses the Raptor transfer case on the high trim series Tremor. There are also great off-road features like trail turn assist that are worthy mentions. Regarding the powertrains, yes we all love a BIG V8 but if you overlay the torque curves for the two I think it will be obvious why the low end torque of the 3.5L twin turbo V6 has real benefits when off-roading. My review line up would have been Trail-Boss, Tremor, Rebel. The ZR2 lines up better with the Raptor and TrX in my opinion, if not where would you put the Trail-Boss?

Great review. Like you, and though a close call, I think I'd go for the Chevy, except for one small but highly relevant interior detail. I love, love the available folding flat workspace of the front center console in the F150's (I think it is also available in the Tremor as it is in the Platinum and Raptor and others). That is so highly useful, that for that reason I would go for the Ford. And having made that decision, then I am happy with the better mpg of the twin turbo v6 of the Tremor versus the 6.2liter v8 of the Chevy despite what I suspect is a small trade off in power (Though being at high altitude in the mountains, maybe there is no real trade off in that regard, given the altitude advantage of the turbo feature?). I wish Chey's had that foldable, flat workspace found in the front center console of the Fords.

@@Tiovergudo they both have there pros & cons. Like I said for a rock crawler a front locker is preferable. But these are full size trucks. They not even going to fit through most trails that would put them needing a locker. Also with a torsen you can apply some brake to get the front axle to lock if needed. This is why ford went with torsen: During development of the Raptor, high-speed desert running with locked front and rear axles did not provide the necessary steering feel nor front-end directional attributes the team was seeking. “When you have a rear differential lock and a front differential lock like you do for rock crawlers, it binds the truck up and makes it difficult for the chassis to turn. At speed, you still want to be able to turn in, you want the nose to point, and you want to be able to set it up in the corner. For fast, dynamic handling events, and to balance and be able to steer and still have a nimble feel, a locker on the front wasn't the right answer.”

The 2 biggest issues GM has had over the years was A: the AFM lifters on models from 2005-2018 failed on occasion, in 2019 the moved to a complete different system called DFM from Tula Tech that's being used on some Cummins diesels that's proven to be reliable. The second issue GM has had was the damn 8 speed automatic transmission, well known for failures, the new 10 speed now being used in the majority of the trucks has proven very reliable. I own a 2021 Silverado Trail Boss LT with the 5.3 and 10 speed, that's the best shifting transmission I've ever driven in any brand of vehicle. GM and Ford use the same 10 speed automatic design in their 1/2 ton trucks, and a beefier 10 speed in the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.

The trail boss was the competitor for the Rebel and Tremor. The ZR2 was supposed/expected to be the competitor for the Raptor and TRX but Chevy did NOT deliver and came out short. I love the ZR2 for what it is and in that category is a winner but in the Baja truck segment. TRX is king!!

People are complaining on the new f150s burning to much oil, rust on the bottom from day 1.... hood wanting to open while driving because the aluminum is to light and thin on the new trucks... also the silverado and f150 share the 10 speed transmission but GM did a better job with it, it’s seamless!!! Ford owners are complaining on they’re 10 speeds, now that the silverado and sierra have new interior and re-fresh exterior I’ll take the 6.2 liter v8 zr2 over the tremor and its v6 turbo

@Dimetri Drossos sounds well and good except for the fact that there are many EcoBoost owners out there with well over 200,000 miles and no issues whatsoever, I would say what you're saying would be correct if it was in year one or two of the EcoBoost engines, but they've already proven themselves, true there are problems, however I have not seen any manufacturer yet that didn't have problems
@15Jeep
@15Jeep 2 года назад
@Dimetri Drossos You are partially correct. Yes, the internal pressures and smaller foot print of the V6 engine will reduce reliability, durability and longevity. The engine size of the 6.0L PSD engine is negligible in contributing to the problems for this engine platform compared to other V8 diesel engines. Over 90 percent of the problems with the Ford 6.0L PSD engine was the "surrounding operating systems". The major problem was the silicate based Motorcraft Premium Gold coolant combined with the engine oil cooler and EGR cooler...all three contributed to the numerous overheating issues. However, ALL of the shortcomings of the 6.0L PSD can be resolved with quality aftermarket parts from Bullet Proof Diesel (BPD) in Arizona. Lots of guys now are driving these older Ford Super Duty trucks and using for work and or street performance. Check out RU-vid videos on the 6.0L PSD engine. The really JUNK PSD engine is (was) the 6.4L with twin turbos because it has (had) "block cavitation" problems behind the water pump...no fix for that.

@@tbj4855 First On Race Day! Ha! I am not partial to any of the three U. S. automakers...so, I am not biased. That said, historically, like many guys I have preferred Chevrolet big blocks and small blocks. Three favorite muscle cars are the 1969 Chevrolet COPO Camaro with big block 427 under the hood; 1967 - 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with small block 302; and 2014 - 2015 Camaro Z28 with 7.0L with aftermarket valve guides. I have not been a big Mopar fan, but would not kick a 440 or 426 Hemi to the curb. It appears you know nothing about the Ford FE V8 engines. As good as many of the Chevrolet and Mopar engines were, the Ford FE engines were all about performance but also more expensive to build. The 352 was formidable, but the 390 was even more desired and prominent. The KING of ALL V8 engines though...was the 427. It was the big block Ford FE 427 V8 that beat Ferrari 4 times in the 24 Hour Le Mans. In addition, the Ford 427 was outlawed by NASCAR because the Chevrolet and Mopar guys were crying in their beer. Like it or not, it is (was) the big block Ford FE 427 V8 that is (was) the epitome of high performance big block engines. It was not as popular as the GM and Mopar engines because it was so costly to build. Unfortunately, the Ford FE 427 was never put into a production Mustang. However, a few were placed under the hood of the 1968 Mercury Cougar GT-E.

The 6.2L V8 is a big advantage IF and WHEN the lifter and connecting rods problems are fixed. The Raptor has a far better suspension for off-road capability. The 3.5L Ecoboost V6 with twin turbos is problematic. I would purchase a Ford F150 Tremor or F150 Raptor if Ford would stuff a Naturally aspirated PUSH ROD V8 engine under the hood. On the other hand, I am not much for Class 1 (1/2 ton) trucks. So, those are the reasons why I ordered a 2022 Ford F350 with the 7.3L V8 4WD and Tremor Package.

No matter how much trendy and fancy Chevy makes the interior I find it’s kinda odd and doesn’t feel like a truck .
