Clearly, just a little more speed leads to a lot more fuel burn. I finally learned this lesson and now I limit my highway speed to 70 and my avg fuel economy has increased by 2 mpg. It definitely pays to take your time and use cruise control. Good video!

Yes and remember the other thing we found is that driving behind another vehicle riding in their draft helps a lot too

Really cool comparison. Did you actually calculate how much fuel was burned to calculate the exact average mpg? BTW, at 21 mpg vs. 23 mpg, at $6.00 per gallon (I live in California), that is $.02 per mile difference. If you drive 15,000 miles per year, that’s a difference of about $372 in a year, or $31 a month. If your gas is $4.00 per gallon, it is $.016 per mile difference, or $248 a year, or $20 per month. You are talking about $65k to $75k trucks. For a difference of $250-$372 a year in fuel costs, get the engine you want. For me, I am old school and love the sound of the 5.0.

I have a 2014 F150 XLT extra cab four wheel drive with the 5.0 and six speed auto. On a 500 mile trip with mixed driving, I get about 19-22 mpg. I love that Coyote, and, I never have to deal with turbos. I like a simpler truck. I also have a deluxe Leer fiberglass topper that adds at least two hundred pounds to the truck, along with the side steps shown in the video. For the differenc, I will take the 5 liter any day of the week.

I had a 1980 Honda CM400 motorcycle two cylinder engine that loved to cruise at 7000 rpm and would do around 55mpg or more if I kept it like that (which translated to around 65 mph on the highway). One time I decided to go a little faster while riding to a town 90 miles away. After going 45 miles or so I ran out of gas, and had to use the reserve and limp back to the only gas station there was in between which I had just passed 15 miles behind. So yeah speed kills MPG, lesson learned. By the way both are world class trucks and it's your preference but I do love my 2013 F-150 3.5L Ecoboost. On a side note this video had amazing potential if it wasn't for the bad camera movement in the middle of it. Cheers and thanks!

Great and interesting video. I have tow mirrors on my F150 and love them but am aware they cost me mpg's. Thanks for testing with the mirrors folded in. Good info. My thought is if tow mirrors cost about 1/2 mpg that's not bad. Regular mirrors still create drag. I'd like to know how much difference non-towing mirrors create. Maybe a 1/4 mpg???

I've got a 2020 F-150 EcoBoost. It's not my first rodeo with a turbocharged vehicle, but just like the others I have a hard time keeping it out of boost. I get about the same economy as with my V8 naturally aspirated Nissan Titan 5.6 liter... which isn't super good because I was not good about keeping my foot out of that either.

Cool comparison but most people I know that drive the eco-boost report average mileages much more similar to the V8 due to spirited and round town driving. What it boils down to is the turbo motor is either Eco or boost which consumes way more gas. I'll take the V8 sound and engine longevity over the V6 turbo any day. JMO

The turbo will get worse fuel economy because while a naturally aspirated engine can run stoich, a turbo engine has to run rich under boost to prevent pre-detonation or a lean fuel mixture which will burn a hole right thru a piston or head gasket. So running rich under boost burns more fuel for a given amount of power conpared to a naturally aspirated engine. However when not towing and not under boost the smaller turbo engine will get better fuel economy.

Looks like you missed the whole point. The window stickers of both trucks tell you the weight of each truck so we already know the weight difference we don't need to know the weight of the engines that's irrelevant at this point so we knew that one truck needed to have a certain amount of weight added to it to equal the other truck.

I don’t buy truck for fuel efficiency I buy them to be able to carry and pull things that I want but the most important thing is longevity and no problems but just changing oil and oil filter. The 3.5 is a fantastic motor it has more torque than the V 8 it is a great motor to toe with but due to the chains on the phasers and stuff like that stretching turbo issues also the tube that feeds oil to the turbo has a screen that clogs up due to the Blow by on the Pistons and dirtying up the oil causing all kinds of issues I just don’t want to deal with that. A engine like that also has a high-pressure fuel pump another issue it’s basically a small Diesel engine. But I know a lot of guys that love the 3.5 so to each his own
