I can’t say thank you enough. I’ve had my truck for 10 years and it has “bumped” from day one. Everyone just said, “Yeah. All F150s do that!” Well....not anymore. My 2005 F150 XLT drives smooth as can be now. I would have sworn that the rear differential was shot...but nope. An $18 kit, and about an hour of my time was all it took. THANK YOU!

Years ago,auto companies had a grease zerk on the driveshaft where they should have them now . This probably saved them a 5 cents or less per unit . I hope they were happy with their new found gold mine because it surely has caused the consumer a lot of headache. All this lubed for life stuff is stupid..

Thank you for this video... I went to a mechanic that estimated in $800.00 to fix the noise, he said it was the deferential... another mechanic said he had a pick-up truck with the same problem, he sold the truck because he could't find the problem... I saw this video, I've done the same and my pick-up truck now is fixed, it is like miracle... Just grease, I spend only $10.00 .

Thank you for taking the time to make this. I bought a 2010 FX2 with the 2-piece driveshaft and 67,000 miles. About 3 weeks later I started experiencing the super annoying clunk whenever I accelerated and stopped. I thought it was the transmission at first shifting hard but then realized the RPMs didn't change when it clunked. Got the shaft repair kit you mentioned on eBay for $17 and man what a difference. Took me 45 minutes and the truck drives smooth as butter now. A huge relief knowing that's all it was.

8 years later after making this video, it is still helping people. I had it in my head there was too much slop in the transfer case or the trans mount was bad. Mine was clunking hard. I had just replaced the driveshaft not long ago and just couldnt imagine that could be a problem. Sure enough the splines were dry as hell and greasing it completely fixed the clunking. Thank you.

This worked on my 2016 FX4 SuperCab with one piece driveshaft. Noticed this issue when I bought my truck used in August 2023 and was racking my brain trying to figure it out. I thought it just had play in the ring and pinion until finding this videos. Thank you for posting this. So, to those with newer trucks this issue continues to be a problem and this solution continues to fix it. I just used some blue grease I already had in my grease gun. Feels like a new truck now. Thanks for this helpful video. Did this procedure to my 18 2.7 Scab yesterday and the 2 piece drive shaft looked a bit different. It helped somewhat with strange clunks when slowing to stop.

Also, if reusing the old driveshaft you need to take a file & file off burrs @ the start of the spline @ the front of the insert where driveshaft spline first slides in. This is what causes it to try to grab/stick. Then grease as shown & re-install/re-stab driveshaft.

@SnakeRiverFishing
@SnakeRiverFishing 9 лет назад
FordTechMakuloco It's all i use for most everything and i live on a mountaintop by the canadian border see -20 actual temps regular during the winters here. ptfe is great in engines and fast spinning bearings / bushings etc that build up heat friction this is a simple joint that only needs to be free to slide a small bit nothing is spinning past anything. I have a 1996 F 250 HD diesel 4x4 that has that lovely dipped in blue crap at the factory that has so many problems down the road mine froze solid had to torch and pound it off and was concerned how thick it was. The joint only needs to not have excessive slop and basically lubed anything will work I use marine wheel bearing grease because it stays where you put it and will not allow water to enter the joint, on my truck it's a 2 piece so that joint is out in the open not the back of the case but it's the same great video ill probably watch some more been a ford truck owner mechanic by necessity since 1973 and my first rig was a 67.

This goes back, way back into the laste 90's. I have an 02, F150 long bed with 320k miles that is set up with this aluminum one piece drive shaft. Buying a new drive shaft is a $350 pricetag, but simply greasing it is what I do from time to time. And if its a bit worn that just gives a place for the grease to be without drying out too quickly as you tend to push most of the grease out with that chroming new and a super tight fit. Chroming or not, its a darn spline joint... grease it.

Brian, I have a 2009 F150 4.6L 6r80 trans with the two piece drive shaft but both ends are Flanged so there's no slip joint going into the Trans tail housing. Am thinking that since there's a flex boot at the carrier bearing that's the spot i need to add the new grease. Sound right to you? Because of your really great videos and the way you walk thru us through the repairs I had the confidence to tackle all of the upkeep repairs on my truck. Thanks Huge for all you do!! Really awesome. So far, after re-watching your repair videos to get my head on straight. With my son's help we have managed to replace all of my shocks/struts, transmission oil/filter and new adapter, spark plugs and coil packs. Little bit stuck on the drive shaft upkeep (bump and stick issue - big issue for me) and need a tad bit of your wisdom. I bought the white Teflon repair kit that you showed in this video. Because i wasn't 100% about the driveshaft I didn't take it apart when i did the other repairs. Realize this repair is a no-brainer for you but i am like i mentioned a tad concerned and really do want this bump issue fixed right. I do have an extended warranty on the truck but it expires this year and have only used it to replace the windshield when i bought the truck new. It had bubbles in the glass from the Kansas plant. Please help here -- Should i warranty the driveshaft to fix the bumping issue on my '09 pickup w/about 50K miles. It's not drastic mind you, but really freakin annoying. Thinking about the poor plating FOMOCO found and you mentioned. Am I right about where the spline is (at the carrier bearing) ? I'm kinda comfortable doing it but it's hard the son's gone back to the mainland and I'm handicapped. It would most likely be an all day task for me. Don't quite bend like when i was younger. Can i get from you the TSB or Recall numbers to show the dealership for the driveshaft for my truck? Do you want my VIN # ? The dealership isn't the most friendly at giving out info and acknowledging there's a repair TSB Recall out there. They tried to make me pay $150 to grease the wheel bump stops. Who knew that i needed to a dab of grease there every so often. It's listed in the repair books or service warranty. Questions - Am I right about where the spline is (at the carrier bearing) ? Can i get from you the TSB or Recall numbers to show the dealership for the driveshaft for my truck? Do you want my VIN # ? Sorry for the length of this and keep on truckin - You Rock.

Just did this job. Worked well. Only thing when I took the drive shaft out of the transfer case, oil leaked out. I was slightly down hill.

Thanks for the vid, I agree it's horribly annoying. I just ordered the lubricant you posted and will give it a shot.

it actually happens in older ford's all the 90s probably until then but it's not nearly as bad because of the added knuckles in two piece shafts... I can't remember a truck growing up my father not putting a zerk fitting in by the spines. driving a truck that didn't have grease all in the splines was like pulling up to a red light soon as you came to a stop it feel like someone lightly banged your bumper with a fist .👊🏾and when u take off a light 👊🏾 only ocd people probably even know what I'm talking about 🤣

my 89 f150 does that exact thing. drives me nuts. I will try this. easy enough, and if it turns out to be the rear end, just spent a little time and some grease.

Bungee cords or 550 cord is great for fixing ujoints....you dont need to drop the drive line....just tie it up.

My truck started having the same slip bump issue but after driving for a while the corrosion actually provided something similar to a dry lubrication and it stopped doing it on its own.

This problem isn't new to me. I wish I'd heard about it before. It drove me insane for 15 yrs in a 1995 jeep Cherokee and later the same problem followed me on 1999 E 150. Shops and dealers didn't have a clue. I'm an industrial tech. I learn things daily and so do they, in sure. I corrected this issue purely by accident. It was until I watched this video that came to realize. . I had learned to ignore it.

Thanks for the great video! Planning this for next weekend as I now have this issue on my 2012 super crew f150. Question for you: I was under the truck tonight, before I saw your video, trying to see if anything was "loose". I noticed that I could move the out put shaft on the transmission had close to an 1/8" of play all around when I grabbed the shaft and pushed and pulled on it. Is this a normal amount of play? Thanks for all responses!

Jeff Piatt Yes totally normal.

The biggest problem is Ford does not doing any testing done and releases the vehicle way too early.I don't even torque down the 4 driveshaft bolts down using the German torque spec using an impact.

In most peoples experience here with this fix, would you say that it fixed a problem only when starting and stopping, or would you say it fixed an issue going into a certain gear? I'm having my issue mainly going into 2nd gear where it usually slams into it hard. I found this fix, but I'm skeptical if it will work. It's $40 of tools and lube, so not a huge investment, but just wondering if anyone else out there had the same issues and solved it with this fix?

Dang, wish I would have seen this earlier. My 2016 did the slip bump at stop signs too. Most notably when it was a rolling stop or very quick 1 sec stop. I searched all over for this issue and could never find the fix. Dealer didn't have any solutions either. I got so fed up with it, and the supercab door rattle that I ended up trading it in for a 2018 supercrew. If I could have fixed this I probably could deal with just having the door rattle.

My 09 had this. My impression was a hard downshift or once I looked back to see if someone tapped me in the back when I stopped. Since it is slipped into the transfer case having lube oil in it , why does it even need lube? This doesn't say much for the lubrication properties of the thin trans fluid thats now used vs the old gear lube models.

I am a retired chevrolet mechanic and when I rode in a ford truck a friend of mine has, the bump felt and sounded like a broken transmission mount to me. Yes I know the gm trucks have a problem with a clunk also. I am not picking on ford products ok.

Would Permatex PermaShield Fuel Resistant Gasket Dressing & Flange Sealant or Permatex Form-A-Gasket No. 2 Sealant or Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket No. 3 Sealant Liquid be a good idea to use at the end of the spline shaft opening to prevent water and dirt from entering these spline mating areas and contaminating the lubricant you recommended? As always you're the best, Bro!

I know this is an older video, but had a question regarding a 2013 150 4x4 with the one piece shaft. I added a 3” block to the rear in place of the stock block and now I have this slip bang again. Was curious if you think the fix would be simply to re-grease or to add a 3/4 drive shaft spacer? I know I changed the angles by adding the blocks, but what I don’t know is what the tolerance is for allowable “free play” on the yoke to the output shaft. Basically how far should it slide in and out under factory spec? Thanks, your videos are always a huge help!

Hi, I have a 2004 f-150 fx4 4x4. I installed a leveling kit and bigger tires, now I have a clunk or bump feel on take off and sometimes on braking. I have a one piece drive shaft that goes into the transfer case back to the rear. Do you think I have have to grease the slip yoke and is it possible since the slip goes into the transfer case? Thank you

I wouldn't buy anything but a Ford I've had them all they all have their little quirks it sounds like you're a Ford man too and I love your videos keep up the good I have a 2011 too that noise always seems to sounds like it's coming from the rear not by the transfer is that correct ?

One more thing..... Is the grease you mentioned only through Ford or is there a grease that I can pick up at a local parts store? What type of grease is it exactly. Thanks again. I will definitely subscribe to your channel. Great info.
