When hooking up your trailer (chains) cables, you always want to CROSS them. It takes out the slack so if the trailer were to come off the ball, it won’t drag on the ground. It’ll still be suspended in the air. Peace of advice.

Obsessed Garage, in Ontario Canada it is the law and I bet it is in Florida as well. Knowing how precise and fanatical for doing things the best way please cross them. BTW, love your channel.

Yes and no. This raptor to my knowledge doesnt have chain loops under the hitch so he is forced to use the tow hooks on the bumper. If he crossed them. The cables would bind while turning

You backed it into the garage "blind side" It's much easier to see backing to the left. If you can pull up so the garage is on the left side, give it a try. You won't have to get out of the truck to see where the trailer is.

I gotta hand it to Ford, it really seems like a great feature for people who just can't grasp backing a trailer. I'm also impressed at how well it seems to work, though I'd be interested to see how it works at night or in bad weather. In any case Matt, I hope in time you can learn to take off the electronic training wheels and figure it out for yourself. There is something strangely satisfying about threading the needle with a trailer perfectly. Overall good video and Fuck the haters giving you crap about safety chains and not knowing what you're doing; you're still learning. Good luck my friend.
@auburn587
@auburn587 6 лет назад
Matt put your safety chains on the slot on either side of your ball, don’t use the tow hooks because that’s not what they’re for, also cross safety chains as others have said

The guys below have given good advice about chains and how to see better, I am better than "fair to middling" at backing and was not going to set mine up.. But, maybe I will just to see. Also driving 2018 Raptor, mine a crew cab. I do not pull large trailers with it, just 3500# utility. Does great. Marvelous trucks!
@carterxiong8878
@carterxiong8878 5 лет назад
I know I'm a little late on this but... You probably don't wanna hook the safety chain on the bumper hook. You were supposed to hook it underneath where on the hitch, there is one loop on each side and that how you were supposed to connect it to. Also, always cross them so the hitch doesn't drag on the ground.
@airsnipe4
@airsnipe4 6 лет назад
If you can line up your parking spot on the drivers side you can use the mirror and windows to line up. Backing up to the "blind (passenger) side" is a little bit harder without wide tow mirrors. Also after you check that you're clear, try to focus on one mirror and pick a spot behind the trailer you're trying to "hit". When you keep looking from mirror to mirror it's much harder to focus on a point and you'll tend to over correct your steering inputs. Just some tips my uncle that drove semis taught me!

I have not seen the new raptor back bumpers but did you hook the trailer safety chains to the truck tow hooks? Does it not have trailer hooks near the ball like every other truck? I would imagine your chains being all the way out there will not fare as well as a normal truck safety chain location.

Quite the initial setup, but it looks like it does the trick. If you find truck sagging too much with trailer load, air ride has great helper bag system installs with bags, compressor, tank, gauges, line, etc. 2 hour install .

Obsessed Garage Is the reverse monitor mirrored so that you turn the knob in the direction you want the trailer to go? It looked like the wheel was mimicking the direction that you turned the knob. It would be helpful to see the trailer backed in from your perspective inside the cab. I used to pull a 33' gooseneck two car hauler for recreation. My longest trip was from Alabama to Colorado hauling two Jeeps (that was a great trip). Reversing wasn't awful but I was selective about when I did. Generally I would try to avoid it, if possible, by parking where I could pull through. I usually only needed to back the trailer for storage, the same as your scenario. P.S. The "collector" where you put your aluminum hitch is called a receiver, as far as I know.
@ObsessedGarage
@ObsessedGarage 6 лет назад
I joke a bit about my backing skills. People take it so literally, but I also think most dudes aren't willing to admit they aren't good at something. Backing a 33' trailer is not easy not matter how much practice you have. You only do it when you have to do it.

Interesting video. When you put the sticker on the driver's side of trailer, why does it appear on the passenger side when viewed on the backup camera screen?
@NovemberFoxtrotRC
@NovemberFoxtrotRC 6 лет назад
73henny I think the truck mirrors the camera. Making turning the knob he was using reverse the usual steering inputs that you'd use to back a trailer. It's cool I guess but I think it makes it more difficult for someone to learn how to manually back a trailer. You're going to be all screwed up if that's how it actually works...

Your chains should be crossed and connected to the tow strap hooks, not the tow hooks, also your trailer brake activation cable has way to much slack in it. I've had a trailer come off the hitch and it's not pretty when these things aren't done properly.

I told you you're life would be a lot easier if you just backed it in with the truck lol! I find that assist more of a pain in the ass the only thing I would use it for is the blind spot monitoring. It does look like it's good for people who aren't real confident in backing a trailer up and should help with your backing up skills when you can't use the assist.

The best advice I can give you other than practice without using the assist is don't back up on your blind side. Try and always back up on the driver side. It'll save you from questioning where you're trailer is at
@WA-uq1rh
@WA-uq1rh 6 лет назад
FYI - There shouldn’t be any CO from your exhaust since your truck is still new. CO results from incomplete combustion which tends to happen in older vehicles when fuel/air ratio are messed up. 👍🏼. That’s not to say that the clean exhaust is good for you anyway ☺️.

There should be trailer chain hooks right next to the hitch. You shouldn’t have to use the hooks meant for towing the truck out of a ditch. It could be bad if the hitch came undone and your chains aren’t crossed and are attached to the wrong hooks.
@Patrick94GSR
@Patrick94GSR 6 лет назад
Raising the hitch puts more weight on the tongue? I would have thought the opposite, more weight transferred towards the back of the trailer and less towards the front.

I wonder how many people will actually go through the process of setting it up? I know I wouldn't because it seems tedious and backing up a trailer is relatively easy once you know what you're doing. But to each their own. No hate, just commenting my opinion.
@Speednote10
@Speednote10 6 лет назад
I'm the complete opposite, I would do it for the fun of it. A bit like setting up a tv, computer or sound system and then dialing in (sorry) the software once you're done. I love that sort of stuff. And who doesn't like a good bit of measuring to begin with! ;) + I would go nuts if I had the system in the car and didn't set it up for my trailer. To me it would feel like there was something....unfinished, for a lack of a better word. Maybe OCD is a better way to describe it.. =)
@battletime37

How does the knob make backing up easier? All it seems to do is turn the wheel for you. Does it do something else, or does it just make the behavior more predictable by letting a computer do it? I love Ford, but the knob has never made sense to me. I love your videos, by the way!
