Id love to see the difference between this torsen diff vs just a standard 4x4 truck on the same incline to see how much it helps

From what I can tell, that front Torsen diff is working like a champ and it’s fully locking. Really impressive. Totally worth the $500 dollars.

Torsens never lock, they send torque to the wheel with traction.
@triznick1
@triznick1 2 года назад
@@TRDPRO312 they don’t selectably lock, but lock fully when the wheels slip, thus sending torque equally to both front wheels. Said another way, they don’t stay fully locked as you said, but do lock when there is enough torque difference.

@@triznick1Everything written here is wrong lol. Torsens never lock. The only differential that sends equal torque is an open one.
@TeensierPython
@TeensierPython 9 месяцев назад
@@tyeetamerthat is also wrong. The only diff that sends equal torque is a spool (or anything with a locker). An open diff will send 100% torque to whichever wheel is “slipping”
@tyeetamer
@tyeetamer 9 месяцев назад
@@TeensierPythonYou’re confusing torque with RPMs. Open differentials are known to have a 1:1 torque bias ratio. By design, they always send equal torque to both wheels. When one tire looses traction, they can not send any more torque to the wheel with traction, so there’s not enough torque to turn it and get the vehicle moving. Locking differentials are known to have an infinite torque bias ratio with the ability to send all of the torque to one axle/ wheel. Say one tire is completely up in the air. It takes very little torque to spin that tire. The locker is able to put as much torque as needed to the other tire to get it to also spin. If you want to learn more, research torque bias ratios. Plenty of information out there.

The Torsen diff works off of gears. There are no clutches like a limited slip. There’s a great video on RU-vid about it. Very interesting on how it works. Very strong with no clutches to wear out. Once the wheels slip the gears lock in and now it’s locked up. Once the pressure is off the gears it goes back to an open diff.

I remember when I got my new '89 K1500 short wheelbase 350 V8 five speed manual Z/71 Off Road and went deer hunting in December '88 in a friend's timber after 10" of snow. We came to a steep hill with a two track going up it and that G80 locker with the open front diff took us straight up it, no muss, no fuss, no traction control, no "drive modes".
@nicholas2932
@nicholas2932 2 года назад
awesome video, this is the stuff i come to youtube for lol... something worth noting about these torsion limited slip vs open. if your on ice going up a hill and the road starts to lean. if you break traction youll spin both tires and will start to slide off the road until you stop the wheel spin. with open diff, you would spin one and remain on the road... i never thought about it till it started happening to me and made total sense.
@JackZeroZ
@JackZeroZ 2 года назад
Thanks! Great stuff! Can you test it by unlocking the rear axle, turn off traction control, suspending the diagonal front and rear wheels in the air? Drive 45 degree left or right towards where a hill and flat ground meets can put 2 wheels in the air, basically have one of the front wheels ride on the hill, and the diagonal back wheel still on the flat ground. When rear is unlocked, the back wheel with in the air should spin freely. The front wheel in the air should turn at the same speed as the one on the ground due to Torsen diff. You might need to lightly tap the brake to get Torsen activated (please test this as well).

Great video , could you try another situation where one wheel in the front and back have no traction or aren’t touching the ground. I’m interested to see when one wheel up front can’t put any power to the ground if the Torsen still engages properly

@brianthompson9485

The torsen multiplies torque from one wheel to the other wheel. By design the torsen won't engage with one wheel off the ground.... 0 torque x 2.5= 0 torque. You would have to apply brakes to get the torsen to send torque to the other side in that kind of situation.
@fordsbetter3496
@fordsbetter3496 2 года назад
@@brianthompson9485 exactly. This is why I don’t know why Ford didn’t just put a locker instead. Unless your heavy off-roading you probably won’t ever have one wheel off the ground but it still bothers me to know it won’t engage if put in that situation.
@rmkilc
@rmkilc Год назад
@@fordsbetter3496 Because in the majority of scenarios, a Torsen does great. You can't really steer at all with a locker up front. You already have a locker in the rear. I think Ford does it right. Torsen up front and locker in the rear. If opposing wheels are off the ground, the rear locker by itself gets you out. But playing around on loose terrain like sand or mud, a Torsen up front just pulls you the direction you point your wheels. A locker up front is terrible whenever it is actually locked. Like in the snow with a front locker engaged, you just go straight when you try to turn.

I don't know if you'll see this, but 2025 is the year I'll be buying. Looking at F150 Platinum for its luxury, comfortable interior and Powerboost engine, the Tremor for its added capabilities including the torsion front diff, or the Raptor (35 or 37 not sure) for its buttery smooth highway drive but still off road capabilities, though am concerned about that added 7"s of width being limiting at times. Am leaning Tremor. Here's a concern about the Raptor. I saw 2 different youtubers say the 2025 Raptor would no longer come with the front torsion diff (presumes it did at some point), but if true am I correct in assuming the Raptor would then lose some capabilities that the Tremor with its front torsion diff would have? Or might the Raptor have some other feature(s) that makes up for the loss of the front torsion diff? Other? Any insights would be welcome. I'm looking for a max luxury, comfortable interior in a go anywhere, anytime, any kind of weather vehicle, stormy, snowy high altitude winter weather a key part given where I live, and it's that front torsion diff that seems to be making a difference to me. It comes with the Tremor but not the Platinum/Platinum Plus or the Raptor. If I do get the P/PP or more likely the Tremor, I am thinking about doing a level with a 2.5-3.5" lift, putting on larger 35 tires, with a bit extra poke, and if appropriate upgrading parts of the suspension with stronger, higher performance parts. Thanks for your answers and input if you can.

@@Nate-zy5ce Ive never driven a raptor but understand they don't come with the front torsen. The main difference for me is that ilI can and have towed 10k lbs with the tremor. @@rpmservice5211 Yeh, that's a good point. Thanks for replying. How smooth and comfortable is the drive of your Tremor, long highway drive especially, still pretty nice? And those seats, comfortable? How about those back seats, comfortable? I know rear pick up seats are designed differently than front, maybe not as long a seat portion, maybe not as comfortable generally, but what do you think, maybe different somehow than others?

@rpmservice5211
@rpmservice5211 10 месяцев назад
You're looking at the two front Wheels. In a normal vehicle without locking front differentials only one tire would spin if it loses traction the other tire would not spend and the vehicle gets stuck easier. Some vehicles have locking rears or limited-slip rear differentials and locking front and limited slip. If a tire loses traction and spins in the other one stays without moving or getting any power to it and vehicle gets stuck easier regardless of what electronics they put in there's no better way to do it than with proper differentials.

I've owned many trucks. It is far superior and I've never been a Ford guy. I took it very far off road on logging roads up steep inclines with loose mud and rock that I haven't been able to get to with other trucks. Ride is excellent. Speed bumps are nothing. I see people modifying the suspension and I can't understand why. It's the perfect balance for off-road and towing. The Ecoboost outperforms both the 5.3 and 6.2 Chevy motors when towing also. I do have one complaint. I can't find a volt meter in the instrument cluster which is a must have for monitoring your systems. Only other complaint is the Ford optioned factory rolling tonneau cover is not great. I would have gotten a better version that locked anywhere along the slide. The Ford one only locks at full extension.

You're not missing anything. When sitting in the cab you can't tell what's happening. I wanted to film the wheels so I could know if there were certain situations that the Torsen engaged. But to my surprise it engaged in all scenarios. I didn't do it in this video bbut when you apply consistent firm but not hard pressure on the brake pedal during acceleration it spins less overall and you get better traction.

@rpmservice5211
@rpmservice5211 2 года назад
Seems to engage faster but to my understanding works on a different concept. I believe the g80 is used in rears because once it engages it's locked in which could be a problem on the front. The Torsen is supposed to send power to the side losing grip. One advantage of the Torsen I noticed it's that when you lightly hold pressure on the brake pedal it acts like a locker. So it really gives you the most versatile of options for various driving types. The g80 however is very poor in the rear when compared to the true Trac or selectable locker.
