In today's video we are looking at a 1999 Ford F-150 pickup truck. The customer complaint is that the windshield wiper motor is not operating. Follow along as I take you step by step through my diagnostic and troubleshooting methods, so that we can find the problem and fix it. Is it a bad wiper motor, a blown fuse, a bad relay or a bad GEM module? You'll have to stick around to find out!

Oh I cringe when you use that Power Probe. I was following along on on my own Mitchell diagrams. If by mistake you touch the wrong pin on the relay and inject a positive voltage on the control sides of the relays while the GEM module is feeding a negative signal, the GEM gets fried. And you have to buy another module on your own dime. What I would use is an old 1.5 amp incandescent taillight. It's much safer. It would run slower but it proves that the motor works. I've had to diagnose and replace many computers that other mechanics have fried because of those probes. Just explain to your viewers to be careful with those probes. That's a super great video. I like how you explained with detail and patience how the circuitry works. Many common man would learn a lot from your videos. Keep up the good work!

You are better than a Ford factory instructor! The Gem module had it's problems back in the 90's. Like you said, Gem power and ground test 1st, then at the Gem connector, test the outputs and read the the inputs. My way also for verification. The Gem, for it's size, controlled a lot including the 4WD.

Excellent troubleshooting method...We are taught cut the circuit in half, then start on the probable side...Sometimes I start on the side I can more easily eliminate....

I often wondered how the wiper arms return to park after being turned off, assuming it was logic hidden inside the module. Not so, the logic is directly hardwired to a switch linked to the park position. Your walk through of the wiring diagram makes it much easier to understand.

Looks not safe to place the pliers to hold the hood . You are working on that side of the engine and can accidently move them and the hood fall on you . Place it on the other strut .

The Own er manual fuse/relay diagram is a bit confusing on this particular subject, so going with Alldata is a VG choice. Thanks for a top shelf walk -through on the subject. 👍

Another great video Eric. I wouldnt consider mamy of your videos case study as they are mostly failed component that are found thru thorough troubleshooting. I'd consider case study something that fails or act up under strange circumstances and regular troubleshooting wont resolve it

Question- I am totally a Rookie-My truck wiper blades are not working but when i press the button my washer fluid does come out- More than likely the fuse or am I really looking at the wiper motor-meaning it doesnt matter if the washer fluid comes out.

heh my '98 F150's wipers stopped working years ago...turned out to be a bad linkage...bought it from Ford direct for a reasonable cost (complete linkage assembly). Not much to these trucks thankfully. Also for future reference, for some Ford models the owners manuals with fuse legends are available at fleet.ford.com under the Maintenance Link...even I go there at the shop I work for, to get Ford fuse legends.

I have 1998 ford150 and my windows won't go up and my windshield wipers won't work either when I first got the truck I done the same thing a friend messed with a fuse to get it working and now I don't Wich one it is to get my windows to go up and my wiper to work

I remember when there wer three Fordds in my street and none of them wanted to start in the winter. Chevrolet is a shitty car as well. I will keep my toyota. Nothing American for me
