Ford Flex | New bearings, CV Axle, & Tie rods❗❕❗❕❗❕

Loads of work is covered in this video. New wheel bearings- front & rear. New inner & outer tie rods.
New rear knuckles & New driver side cv axle.
I do have some swear words in this vdieo as well...
Maybe I should have broken this down into smaller video for each section...
What is listed here is current as of my video recording. As time moves forward Ford may update part numbers.
The hub bearing part# is BT4Z-1104-B same for both front and rear.
The bolt part#'s:
The fronts -W714331-S439
The rears - W714333-S439
They are torqued to 98 lb-ft in a CROSS PATTERN!!
Cv Axle 13:15
Its part number is DG1Z-3B437-F. Newest part number. (WITH TURBO & AWD!!!)
Careful when pullin gout that axel as transmission fluid wil come out.
30:00 The inner tie rod comes as a kit, its part# is DG1Z-3280-A
EPAS power steering- The inner tie rod is torqued to 66 lb-ft
HYDRAULIC power steering- The inner tie rod is torqued to 77 lb-ft
And in case your curious- the jam nut is torqued to 46 lb-ft
The outer tie rod part # is 9G1Z-3A130-A- The outer tie rod nut is torqued to 111 lb-ft. It is a nylon nut and should be replaced!
The front knuckles (should you choose to replace them) part number is
Left side is AA5Z-3K186-A
Right side is AA5Z-3K185-A
The torque values for the nuts are as follows:
Strut to knuckle flag bolt &- torqued to 129 lb-ft (This is a stretch bolt and it is recommended to replace with a new bolt and nut!!!)
The lower control arm nut- torqued to 148 lb-ft.
If you removed your control arm like I did- to break the knuckle from the control arm
The lower control arm forward bolt is torqued to 136 lb-ft
The rear bushing bolts & nuts are torqued to 73 lb-ft
49:00 The rear knuckle work begins
Left knuckle is AG1Z-5B758-C
Right knuckle is AG1Z-5B759-C
Rear Knuckle upper bushing:
Dorman Rear Upper Position Knuckle Spherical Bushing
The torque values for the nuts are as follows:
The upper control arm wheel to knuckle nut is torqued to 148 lb-ft. (Remember this is pushed in for maximum negative camber adjustment)
The lower control arm wheel to knuckle nut is torqued to 196 lb-ft
The trailing arm is torqued to 66 lb-ft
The shock absorber lower bolt is torqued to 129 lb-ft
The toe link to knuckle to nut is torqued to 59 lb-ft
The axle nut is TO BE REPLACED WITH A NEW NUT WHEN THE OLD ONE IS REMOVED!!!
Torqued to 258 lb-ft WITH OUT THE VEHICLE ON THE GROUND!!!

If you unbolt the lower ball joint you don’t have to pull the wheel bearing assembly out of it. There is enough space to slide it out.. For future reference..

Just a little advice for if you find yourself having to do this job again. It makes the job 10 times easier if you install the new hub assembly onto the knuckle, prior to reinstalling the knuckle. That way you could have installed the CV axle, then mated the knuckle to the axle before reattaching the knuckle to the strut and then finally reinstalling the lower control arm and tie rods/sway bar links

Hopefully you filled back your gearbox oil. It’s separate from trans and only holds a quart!!

Did you have to buy the circlip and Axle nut separately? Part numbers W712435-S439 and 7T4Z-4B422-A ?

The axle nut is sold separately. The new axle should come with a clip.

I'm going through the same shit with my flex. Started with tie rods then new control arms now waiting for my CV shaft to come in I hope that's it

I spent 2 days in 90 degree heat on black asphalt in direct sunlight with a 10 pound slide hammer. 2 cans of wd4d 2 blow torches, And a 30 pound sledge hammer, and a chisle My wheel bearing never came off, in fact it did not budge and I almost died of a heat stroke. I'm sending it to a mechanic next week. Thats what happens when ford decides to use a steel bearing on a aluminum knuckle.

Though I only spent four(4) hours on mine, I completely understand the frustration. When I watched South main auto's video on a Taurus wheel bearing, I knew I was in for a fight. That is why I bought new knuckles.

Losing the 4 bolts that hold the Bearing assembly onto the car about a 1/8-1/4” out drive it around the block and she will call me right off easy Peezy.. Leaded that from an older mechanic..

You did the right thing and replaced everything at once. I did struts earlier this year, the control arms, TREs, and sway bar links a month ago, now I have a CV clunking. I think it’s time to just bite the bullet and do the hubs along with the axles. I can say I hate this car.

Use a torch and heat it up. Just be careful not to heat up connections where there are rubber grommets unless you also have replacement grommets. Propane torches work sometimes, but otherwise an acetylene torch is best.

Next cv shafts you do just unbolt the ball joints you can mofe the whole wheel assembly out of the way.

Man im doin my 2010 flex. And im swearing a helluva alot more than u did. The whole front is a whore. Waiting on lower control arm and new cv axle seein how i tore mine doing the struts. I watched this just to see how axle was held in trans. Apparently nothing does. Thanks for video

Giant sledge hammer plus cinder blocks is what I did. Take each knuckle off, pound that hub out!!

Agree. It comes down to the time and effort needed to do that vs biying a new part.

why didn't you just remove the CV axle from the hub assembly when you popped it off of the strut and you could have gotten to the bottom ball joint.

What CV axles have you used? I'm going to swap the PTU on my 2010 awd no EB and I can't find the Motorcraft assembly

I used motorcraft. I have not used any other brand. I've read that the passenger side axle has completely different spline now. I've not had to replace that one. I used tasca to source my driver side.

definetly should have read comments b4 tearing off my passenger cv axle. For those who find themselves here ~2021~ Reman axles are hard to find for Ecoboost flex 09-12. You will.need the intermediate shaft assembly only available thru motocraft.

Ouch.. you should have watched a couple RU-vid videos to show how to get the hub assembly out. ;) Could have saved alot of time and money.

Looking back now- I had the front knuckles off- I should have just pounded out the hubs, rather then buy new knuckles from the dealer.

@@EcoBelkin or taken to a local shop to have them press them out. My local shop charges around $20 for them to press parts for me.

@@scottpolenske9224 I have not done the rear upper control arms. It is on my todo list- as soon as i figure a cost effective way to lift the Flex without using the subframe as a lifting poiint. while giving me plenty of room underneath to work in.

@@EcoBelkin I spoke with a mechanic that said to use a reciprocating saw(sawzall) with a carbide blade to cut the bolt (the one that requires the subframe to drop to remove) the when installing the new control arm put the new bolt in reverse and the nut on the other side. This way does not require the subframe to drop. I was also told that complete subframe drop is not required just loosen subframe bolts it and pry down with a pry bar to make enough room to get bolt out.

You had the entire knuckle off you could have easily gotten that hub out of the knuckle. I've done it many times sledgehammer and a big socket.

I wasnt spending the time to do it. Just easier to new ones on. Yes more costly but spent less horsing around trying to get a bearing out.
