2013 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI came in because it kept going into limp mode. Scanning the ECU revealed low fuel pressure codes logged. Rob takes you through the diagnosis and for this one an easy fix.

Used this vid as a first port-of-call for a 2.0 tdci focus 2007 (136).. It really worked and cleared my limp mode ESP FAULT. Filter was brown. Thx. This is awesome vid. Subscribed.

It's nice when you're able to show a before & after datalog to a customer... even if it hadn't solved the problem, you can point out that it was a problem that needed to be resolved... especially if it also has to do with the complaint.

thats a good heads up my 2012 1.6 d cmax has started behaving like this with a warning coming up on the display engine malfunction swith off restart all ok until you put your foot down it looses power and malfunction appeares the car has been serviced by a main dealer 4 year plan ive just looked at the fuel filter it is as dusty as can be it was last serviced @50000 in october so i think this is my first point of focus cheers

Well documented! Water in fuel seems to be the big one over here, though I suppose water by itself shouldn't cause a drop in pressure.

yeh good job in finding the problem, im hoping that the fuel filter is the reason my focus 1.6 wont start ive had it on a friends diagnostics and its coming up with low pressure at rail so hopefully after the new filter that might be cause, like Bodgit says keep them coming

Hi don’t know if you can help I have a Ford Focus 1.6 tdi 2007 Went to start it up the other morning and starts fine wait a little while for it to warm up then set off.. but when you go few the gears it’s lacking power intill 4 or 5 miles down the road car is warm and full power is back pulling few every gear like a train I have don’t the Fuel filter Air filter 5 in 1 injection cleaner with a full tank of fuel but so have it hasn’t sorted out the lack of power from cold...

hi i change my fuel filter last week and its been running fine been to blackburn and back a few times but now evey morning i have to prime it cus it start for 5secs then cuts out and having engine malfunction idlers

Hi Sir I have this same engine on a Mazda 3 2006. The engine vibrates. I replaced everything. Except the hp fuel pump. At idle it shows 30000 29000 kpi when I turn the ac it shows 34000 kpi. How much should the fuel rail pressure in that engine at idle ? Thank you

Heloo sir, I have this DTC in PCM: P02D3:00-6C, P02CF:00-2E, P02CD:00-6C, P02D1:00-6C, I erase them, a friend told me to change the fuel filter and then observ the injectors in time. Any ideea?

Nice work and good find that it was only the filter for the customer. Rob, do you find that diesel filters are more prone to blockage than gasoline engines? The reason I ask is that gasoline filters can have a lot more mileage on them before a blockage occurs. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Terry. Yes diesel filters are definitely more prone to blocking than petrol filters in my experience. With the older Diesel engines you would have lack of power symptoms only, now a days with a sensor for every occasion it freaks the computer out and shuts it down to limp home power.

awesome stuff. What did the filter look like when you pulled it out? Essential having a scan tool that can see that live data. Fuel filters are part of my annual service on the Focus and Mondeo, they look new when I change them but fuel system problems are not problems I need! Cheers

You can't really see anything of the filter element, it's a metal canister with a hole in the middle and 3 inlet/output tubes on top. A right fiddle to get the top heater/connection housing to sit back on it properly. I'm not gonna dissect one either, can't bear the mess! Changing it annually can only be a good thing 👍

ah sorry thought it was a paper filter. Definitely not worth the mess chopping up a canister!

I have the same engine. When the car is under full load say 5th/6th gear I have engine malfunction service now, goes into limp mode and then when I stop fully the engine shuts off and won’t start back up unless bump started. I’ve had fuel filter changed and still persists 😡 any ideas?

Informative. Ive cleared codes using Forscan, but still throwing up P228C, too low feul pressure, but it actually cuts out after 5 minutes driving. Behaves the same repeatedly. Ill put a filter in tmrw when my primer pump arrives. Any idea on common issues if a filter doesn't fix? 1.6tdci fiesta 2012. Where is the feul pressure sensor located?

Hi mate great vid had problems over the last 2 months 3 times broke down after 2 garages say they’ve fixed it car drives great round town soon as I go on the motorway it dies and had to be towed 😢 try to start the car but it sound like a machine fun can’t restart how u re start the engine cheers

If you have a low fuel pressure code then it’s worth trying a fuel filter as the cheapest option first

Seeing the graph on screen was a great visual. We love catching bad cars in the act. :) Do you use the recordings to show the customers what happened? I'm sure some of them don't care but I'd be talking your ear off!

I do save the recordings so they can be viewed by the customer if they want. Like you say most of them don't care...It's only pilots that wanna see the detail LOL!!

Ha Ha, good point. We are very detail oriented by training. My whole professional life is dictated by a check list! If something happens not on the check list then it becomes "non-standard" and yep, you guessed it, we go to another checklist. LOL

Yes it's the same thing. During installation I had the option to download all manufacturers not just Euro. Last week I connected to US Dodge Ram to check A/C operation and the amount of PIDs available was amazing. Euro software is very good and always updating.

Diesels always run lean, so no lean codes on a diesel. I'm not a diesel expert but my understanding is cause they are a high compression engine the cylinders take in and compress a lot of air and only a small amount of diesel needs to be injected to create a high torque.

Hello, I have the same issue with my Ford Focus 1.6 TDci MY2013 115hp now in 2022. I checked the error with Forscan Lite and my smartphone and I found the same error code. I'm going to change the fuel filter as You suggested, but the question is: do You think that is necessary to check the fuel tank to see if it is clean? The car during the first lockdown here in Italy, stayed a long period parked, so I am afraid of the diesel stagnation since we have a large percentage of biodiesel in our diesel here. What do You suggest to Me? Do You think the operation is worth the cost or is it useless (So it's just a clogged filter?!?) ? The filter was quite new, less than 10,000 km... Thanks so much for Your help!

I would change the filter first as that is the cheapest option. We don’t have a lot of bio diesel in the UK so I don’t have experience with it.

Hi mate I have a 1.6d Volvo 2011 with a ticking noise under load/acceleration it seems more noticeable when it’s warm and doesn’t seem to happen on idle at all. Any ideas? I will try an injector cleaner and a tank or 2 of shell V power diesel in it and see if it makes any difference after a few weeks but have you seen it before on these PSA engines? Any chance I can bring it in to you for a look if you’re not too far away?

Alex most common problem is an injector seal leaking causing the ticking. Get it do your local garage as they will have special tools to clean the injector seat when it’s out

One Auto, ok if the expensive fuel and wynns doesn’t do anything then I will have looked at by diesel mechanic to get it fixed but I did look at the injectors myself and there isn’t any deposits around them but I didn’t look very hard to be honest. It sounds cheap enough to get done so I will if after 2/3 weeks of the additive and it doesn’t quiet it down. Thanks for your reply!

Hi, My Mazda 3 is lacking fuel when you boot it and it stops. New filter fitted, no change. Any chance can the fuel high pressure sensor give spikes in the graph when the car judders? Cheers

@@kotherr mine had a problem with the fuel pressure sensor located behind the EGR. I will try forscan tomorrow and see what values I have.

I have a Ford Fiesta Zetec 2014 1.6 and it keeps going into limp mode aswel. Fuel filter has been replaced and it’s still doing so once it’s into 5th gear. I love my car so much however I’ve been to several different mechanics and no one can seem to help me :(

I should add, this seems to happen during spring/summer months. Usually hits into limp mode during March - September. Iv’e had the fuel filter changed recently and it was unsuccessful. If you have any tips I would really appreciate it as I really don’t want to let go of it! Bought the car with 13k on the clock and it’s now on 66k but has been going into limp mode for Atleast 2 years I’m afraid I’ll end up wrecking the engine if nothing is done! Thanks

I have the same engine, trouble I'm having is long crank before start and cut out under load in 1st and 2nd gear. I've hooked up forscan with fuel pressure actual and desires along with the fuel pressure sensor voltage. At idle both the sensor voltage and actual pressure are jumping all over the show. I have already changed the filter to no avail. You think a new fp sensor would be the way to go?

Did you have any air mass codes? Just thinking as I had one recently that did and it turned out that the timing belt had gone slack and caused the extended crank with air mass code.

If you have low fuel pressure codes like this one, you will need to change the in tank fuel pump

Speaking with the customer he suspected the fuel filter was not changed at the last service.

anytime i get a low fuel pressure fault on any diesel ford..it slap a fuel filter on it..there expensive thats why people put em on the long finger to change

This just emphasizes again on the importance of proper maintenance schedule on any car. Things are bound to go bad anyway with any car at some point, but if you do the maintenance at least you are not a contributing factor.

@@bennycrash senzor presiune rampa injectoare. E rampa de injectoare și în capătul ei este un senzor ce se poate deșuruba/schimba. Mulți recomandă schimbatul rampei cu totul că nu se găsește separat, dar se găsește separat. Vezi echivalente la Citroen, Peugeot. Asta la 1.6 diesel

Rule of thumb that I tell customers is every second oil change a fuel filter should be done. This is mainly because our diesel here sucks
