Bring back the old 2.0 pinto engines. You could replace the cam belt with a 10mm and a 13mm. Even if it broke as they were non interference. Plenty of room and takes about 30 minutes! Everything is over complicated these days!
Agree with you. They did have a bit of a problem with the cam. oil spray bars getting blocked , but still great engine. No excuse for the fact a 2 litre Pinto made 100 bhp same as the basic 1.0 ecoboost. Motor bikes have been making massive power from a 1000 cc engine for years without issues. Ford and most makers are just the same as fridges and washing machines, limited life span.
Re: oil pressure gauge. Do miss this as (had one on capri laser) you could see it drop over time and go back up after a filter and oil change. So if you had one on an ecoboost you could do some diagnostics if problems were building
Mad respect to technicians like you who are knowledgeable and willing to share that knowledge. Also I feel it takes a certain kind of person to be able to take such a massive job on and handle it like it’s just another day at the office 👍
Same problems with the 1.2 Puretech. For years your told not to get coolant or oil on the belt then they bring this crap out. IMO inside engine should be chain. 🙂
Fair play to you man. What a fricking nightmare. I can't believe Ford signed this design off. One of the first things you learn in engineering is that oil and rubber are not friends. Unbelievable.
Great job Baz, did my boys car the other month and didnt enjoy it!. We didnt have a torque multiplier so did the crank bolt upto 300NM plus 90deg as per the Haynes manual. I think 300NM is probably enough, that extra 90deg makes it seem like something is gonna break. Great channel, nice and down to earth 👍👍
I was ready to buy a Honda Civic 1.0 vtech. It turns out it has the same wet belt, and thus the same problems. I think I’m better off with the Mazda 6 2.0 Skyactive. It’s a proper engine without turbo. Thank god I found out about the problems first……..
Serves Ford right for designing these POS engines like this, now they're all being recalled. Even a lot of 90's cars you could replace the timing belt in under 2 hours without taking the sump off or any of the accessories or engine mounts or any of that crap.
A pathetic engine design. Simple. Any experienced mechanic will give you the answer. Mechanic with 60 years experience. Baz, there is no defence for this engine design.
Hi bez this belt is against all engineering principles and the motor manufactures know this system is doomed this is a national disgrace my wife had wet belt issue and VX said nothing
Actually the engineering principles are sound. The wet belt adsorbs less power than a dry one, or a chain, and is quieter than a chain. It's the execution that is poor.
@@chrispop99 Sadly they don’t last very long .. 60k on ours , and the cost of replacing them is minimum £1500 and has to be done correctly like Baz has done . We just had wet belt replacement by garage and they didn’t clean oil drain part , engine bearings knackered now 🙄🤬
@@user-zk9xe3wm3vThe camchain kit is 30 quid cheaper than the cambelt kit for a typical EcoBoost - hardly massive. I'm also struggling to see where the space saving comes in to it. Wet belts reduce drag over chains or dry belts. All of current car designs are about fuel efficiency.
My 2017 Honda Civic with the 1.0 engine has been re-called because of this problem too. I had the work done yesterday, apparently its a £1700+ job (no charge to me) which is crazy for a cam belt change.
My Civic 1.0 turbo has just died due to the wet belt particles damaging the turbo and head at 55k...very disappointed as I'd not had a recall. Now getting a recon engine fitted (with new belt) for £3500. Terrible design.
The 1.5T has a chain and is the better engine. Does 4.8L/100K on the highway, 6.4L/100K avg city traffic. And with a remap has 100bhp more than the 1.0T. Mine is 230bhp currently.
Great video Baz, these wet belts are just a pain! Haven't done the Ford one yet but recently did a 2019 Vauxhall Crossland X 1.2 petrol engine (the PSA marked up as Citroen) apart from some of the geography around the timing case end (that Ford on in your video gives better access for a bit more work, swings and roundabouts eh!) The sump on the PSA engine is a pressed steel and mine was on for life, god knows what with, nearly destroyed it getting it off, got one off ebay. Interesting on the Ford that you didn't have to take the camshaft gear wheels off, the PSA one you do, (think this is from 2018 on, earlier ones might be different?). That crankshaft bolt was 50N + 180deg so tight! If you do the PSA engine watch out for the poor crankshaft locking arrangement. The locking kit bits for the camshaft are really good but the flywheel locking tool is a pin about 6 or 7mm dia and doesn't go into a proper hole, it is like a raised folded steel piece which you can see through an aperture, very dodgy indeed. This is the only lock for the crankshaft. I was concerned that the pin would jump out when exerting real torque on the crankshaft pulley bolt so I made a secondary tool that pressed on the back of the provided tool and the additional one provides direct horizontal support. Let me know if you have an opinion on this or have experienced it. I have a Ford wet belt to do and your video has been most valuable in preparation. Thank you so much.
Isn't there a design flaw with the ecoboost engines where the belt degrates prematurely causing the oil pump to clog , starving the engine including the turbocharger, which then can make it fail ?
Baz can u help me I have a Ford focus 2015 1.0lt ecoboost it’s had the wet belt done and had a recent service I’ve just got a engine light on I plug in a diagnostic tool and the code is catalytic converter below freehold bank 1 the car still drives fine no smoke from exhaust and no loss in power any ideas
I wonder if the Ford engineers actually thought about how the mechanics are supposed to service this belt, the engine designed around the belt it seems.
Mine has done 220 000km (+- 136 000 Miles) and then I changed the belt, did not break or cause any issues, Serviced it every 15 000km (+-10 000 Miles) [oil and oil filter + Air Filter and Cabin Filter every 2nd service]
And that’s all there is to it! What a job! Can’t believe the the mentality of the person at Ford who designed this piece of nonsense. There has to easier ways to design a engine. Well done though for having patience and expertise to do the job. Hats off to you!
Baz do you think you be able to see the pickup mesh using a boroscope camara through the sump plug as a way of seeing if belt is starting to deteriorate?
I’m planning on getting mine done, 96,600 miles. I was planning on it anyway then last week the clutch was replaced. I must say though that although I was unsure about the wet belt when I first bought a Fiesta with this engine I’ve not had any problems with that new or this nearly new car. I cannot now afford a new or nearly new now but once the job is done then, provided I continue to have it correctly serviced, I’m sure I will get many more thousand miles from this engine.
Just this second had mine snap, was looking into doing it myself, but not sure i will now, over in Ireland visiting the other halfs parents, garages ain't cheap here.
I’m doing these on a weekly basis now because they are all 10 years old now, they are hard the first few times, it is now possible to do them in 4-5 hours. Important to always use a new crank seal and new pulley bolt.
Just phoned a Ford dealership (Bishops Stortford) and the sales man said he didn’t know anything about it but when I mentioned that Ford in America are recalling these cars and he said he had heard that, but it’s not the same problem.. is he being truthful?
Just to give people an idea of how messed up the timing belt/oil pump job is in the United States. 1 dealership quoted me $2700. Another has no idea what I'm talking about. 2 independent shops declined the work.
@GrueneGurke1911 I don't think the dealerships do either. The oil pump and belt just went on recall. 3 dealerships swear mine isn't on the recall, so I guess mine got pulled off the assembly line and was gold plated 🙄
Idk if this is true but someone who “does heavy duty” at Ford (a guy on the ecoboost facebook page) says when you take off the exhaust, the studs tend to snap and if they do, you will need a new turbo. That doesn’t sound right to me. Does that sound right? Lol
The top right stud 90% of the time snaps but all you do is remove the snapped stud and put a new one in no need for a new turbo at all. Sounds like a Cowboy to me
so is that the oil filter at 3:07 with the fibres in??? I've just brought a 18plate 1.0L with 19k miles on it, should I just make sure to get the oil changed and that filter at 3:07 cleared regularly??
Definitely do an oil change every 5 - 6k mikes. Use only Castrol Magnatex. 5w/20w ford Fords and a new filter. Do an oil change now, that's not a lot of mileage, so the car will have sat about for some time, the oil will have drained to the sump between drives. Most does normally, but a very thin layer takes a couple of days to run to the sump Meaning each start will take a few seconds for oil to get round all of the engine
We have Citroen C4 , garage tried to replace wet belt , broken by the way and didn’t clean properly oil drain/pick up in sump . Guess what ! .. banging sound , bearings now need replaced/recon engine at 4k 🙄. Only done around 60k .
You made that look easier then the job is, having mine done next week 58000 miles done, costing a lot but not paid any road tax on it for 5 years since brought it, so that will go towards it. If i tried to sell it wont get much if this has not been done and i do like the car great on fuel, fingers cross it all goes well.
@@propanbutan4634 £1650 at main dealer but like I said saved over £1000 not paying any road tax and normal not wet belt change is about £400 and I had a new water pump included in that because it is worth it at the same time , seems to be fine since I got it back, probably hang on to it 2or 3 years time I get rid won't be more then 70000 on the clock and iv got bill to show its been done.
Fun cars to drive, good on fuel and 0 road tax. But this job alone £1300 or £1900 from ford themselves. Such a stupid design, just have a normal belt ffs. What is wrong with car manufactures?
I kinda get the idea of wet belt, though I don't think benefits are big. But one thing I absolutely can't understand. Why didn't they make casing like in sleds etc? I mean why didn't they design it so, that it would be separate enclosure that has it's own oil if using oiled belt is mandatory.
Hi, im driving the 2021 fiesta 1.0 titanium, its currently at 96 000 km... I have been advised to sell it before it get changed the cam belt because apparently the belt is inside the engine, and once it's opened, the car does not function properly ever after, how true?
@brownishbaby4574 Because they have finally admitted there is a wet belt problem as they have known all along. That's why now from a 2020 plate there on a chain.
What a faff! Did no one tell the designers that rubber and oil are not the best of friends. If this is advanced engineering better think again! So typically ford in its complexity.
Personally had 6 where they shred the teeth off and cams keep moving but not crank. In our garage had Alot more than just my 6 mate. No one up here services there car either so eats that belt up
Thank you for the video! Just got my wife a ‘24 Escape with the 1.5L 3-cyl EcoBoost which is similar. Thankfully the timing is now chain-driven however the oil pump is still a wet belt.
replacement engine need due to wet belt broken engine £1782.00 injectors testing 120 replacement if needed £190x4 poss turbo £304. 3pc clutch £56.20 labour 16.hr £960 This is what I was quoted!!! Birmingham.
@@artfulbodger..2143 ran happily but noisily with no oil in them top them back up and they would just carry on I had an Escort Rs turbo back in the day the amount of abuse that thing put up with was unbelievable
Are the 2.0 mondeo eco blue engines a big job like that too, ford quoted me £1600 , I no main dealers are expensive but is that £1600 justified, if so I'd like someone to brake down all work involved.. cheers
Hope ford pay for these engine repairs if not could people bring a class action against them for costs of this repair as I have heard lot blow up due to clogged oil strainer
Was going to buy a 2018 fiesta ST line with 55k on it, until i found put about these engines. Not bothering now because in the next two to three years it will cost serious money either to replace the belt or sell the car with at substantial loss. Shame really.
I also have a Fiesta which the same age and mileage, most garages don't do wet timing belt changes around me... let me know if you get it done or find quotes
@charlotteliversidge2606 Hi yes I got mine done at my friends garage it takes a full day's labour to do because of where the belt is you're looking at anywhere between £1100 - £1400 annoyingly I was told the belt was in good condition once they replaced it so it would've probably been good for another year at least but that's the chance you take I guess.
