Another blog in the world that is MK1 Focuses... this time I go through the business end of the igniton system which is the same on all petrol models! Going through my usual waffle of what to look out for and hopefully gives some pointers...
Please like and subscribe which keeps this channel going :)
Correction - The ignition system is of 'wasted spark' principles not sequential like I said, a much cheaper system and more common on a lot of cars from the 90/00's!

Excellent Video. A Ford Focus Mk 2 (2003) is losing power while driving. It is idling badly. There is a misfire on Cylinder 4 error code. I am suspecting the Ignition Coil is faulty. Where can I get a Bosch Ignition Coil?

Another great video. Stuck to copper ngk's when I replaced mine last year but I have never checked gaps, always just assumed they were set right. Will have to pick up that gap tool now. Dropped mine into the garage today for the timing & auxiliary belt changes. Also ordered the 2 new vents for the boot so next weekend can hopefully get stuck into sorting the leak. Wouldn't happen to be planning on doing a video on a complete coolant flush would you?? 😉 Want to do mine but I'm better with visual guides.

Not any time soon as my cooling system is really good, if you havn't watched it I suggest you watch my video on the cooling system and I briefly go over what you need to do to flush and refill the system! Hopefully the vents cure the issue however my experiences are that the vents are only one of many areas water can get in. Fingerscrossed for you buddy!

When I first changed the plugs on mine the gaps were huge! Around 1.5mm. Caused a lot of misfires on idle. Changing the coil pack and the plugs did a lot. I believe it was the fisrt things I changed after I found your channel. Are you sure about it not beingg a wasted-spark type? I have seen cut open OEM coil-packs at school, and they only have one set of coils.
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering Год назад
No this is not wasted-spark its sequential for definete! Oh 1.5mm is way to wide no wonder it was misfiring, same symptoms as if the gap is too short

I bet you would laugh (a bit). I use that 503 490 Bosch coil pack, since last January. Works like a clock, starts the engine at third "cough", even in really cold winter mornings. As a matter of fact, my whole ignition sys is Bosch. 357 141 HT leads, and 532 514 "super4" plugs (in 1.8 Zetec). These plugs have 4 outer electrodes. I'm not sure about the gaps, but I guess it doesn't matter in this case. The spark will find itself an electrode to get contact. I change plugs in two years. They're quite important parts in an engine, for a bargain. I wouldn't use any plugs for more than two years.
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering Год назад
they are indeed its probably 2nd only to an oil & filter change! Ah those 4 electrode plugs are very weird I'm not sure how mine would behave with them, I get the theory but I don't think the cost of them is worth it over oem copper ones.
@flycorvus
@flycorvus Год назад
@@usuallyfixingtinkering well, I don't want to suggest: have a try. Btw those plugs aren't so expensives (around about Ł5 a piece). I had Motorcraft and FeBi plugs in my Focus, w/o any problem. FeBis look like new ones, after two years in the engine, no wear, at all. So, next January, I'll buy another set of FeBi plugs. Maybe.

Would you agree that to those that want more power you are better off going for a slightly bigger engine than what they currently have? (Say go from 1.6 to 1.8??) I was watching a video with John Cardogan, auto expert. (the bald Australian guy that gets people discounts for their new cars in Australia) about remapping etc and he said "to buy a car that suits your needs" and not to mess with it.
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering Год назад
John Cardogan is a man after my own heart by the sound of it. That is my advice 100%, please don't get a 1.6 if your expecting great performance, its a good performer all-round. The 1.8 and 2.0 engines are better suited to peformance, what frustrates me is that people buy a 1.6 and ask how they make it go faster... I can't answer that because you really can't without long-term wear and damage. They're hardy lumps but need looking after the same as any engine.

What spark plugs i need to use if i have the update version of the coil pack I’m running now ford genuine 2050957 which they are from my vin number catalog so do i need to open them to be 1.3mm or should i buy a genuine ford with 1.3mm from the factory ? dont worry about genuine plugs, they are usually NGK's anyway! It's 1.3mm with the new uprated coil pack however I always go 1.2mm just to be safe.

Hi enjoyed the video it was very informative I’m currently looking for a left side axle or the tripod joint for the axle for an MK 1 Ford Focus 1.6L, can you help direct me to one that I can purchase online ? I live in Trinidad in the Caribbean a dealership sells Ford Focus cars here but some of the parts like the axle or axle tripod joint for the MK1 Ford Focus 1.6 European Models are extremely difficult to find here. Any help will be appreciated thank you 🙏
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering Год назад
The swivel hub assembly should be available direct from Ford still, they wou'dnt have sold many because it's not something that goes wrong. What is the issue with yours?
@zaboca09
@zaboca09 Год назад
@@usuallyfixingtinkering the tripod joint that is on the left side axle is failing and causing the car to vibrate when you accelerate at around 60 - 80 km/h… also when it’s in idle or reverse it vibrates, if it’s in neutral the car does not vibrate.
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering Год назад
That's not causing the issue, wheel bearings can cause this issue and drivehshaft bearing support on back of engine can get rough and cause noise and vibration. I'd have a good diagnosis done before any work is done. That is my strongest advice!

Speaking about plugs, diesel focus mk1 glow plugs likes to glue themselves to head. If you don't know what you doing or you are not confident just go to repair shop to change them. Also I have idea for video for you. When you have full washer bottle does it leak on turns or hard brakes? If yes how the hell fix that?
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering Год назад
do you mean the screenwash is leaking out of the bottle? That would be a washer motor seal :) Ah yes the glow plugs on most old diesels are a real pain to extract!

Hi, I’ve just recently got myself a 2001 y reg mk1 focus 1.6 zetec all new to me, I own a Ford capri 2.8! No ECUs here to contend with! I need you!! I’ve started to fix an error code P0303, changed plugs, leads & coil pack though which one I don’t know, but still I have the same error. Do injectors fail? Really like your videos very informative & very knowledgeable on mk1s 👍🏻
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering Год назад
Oh what a car you have, the ultimate capri in my book! If you've bought an aftermarket coil pack it's possibly it's faulty out the box. Rarely do the Imjectors go wrong, but it's a pretty simple job to swap injectors around and see if the code changes to a misfire on another cylinder. That code is specific to cylinder no 3. Also have you cleared the code? Just to check.
@leerowell9434
@leerowell9434 Год назад
Thanks… the capri has been my daily driver since I’ve owned it… 14 years now! …the parts were from euro car parts, starline is manufacturer, though I’ve never heard of them!! I did clear the code but the same code came back . Is it worth changing the injectors around or the coil pack, not sure if euro will take it back though
@davyarthurs
@davyarthurs Год назад
Have you tested compression? If not an injector issue, might be issue with cylinder 3. If it’s that bad a misfire, and it’s an actual issue with that cylinder, you might be able to hear it with a clear flood crank. Good luck.
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering Год назад
@@davyarthurs I've personally never known a 1.6 to loose compression, it usually more than one cylinder anyhow.
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering Год назад
That is very strange! Oh that is euro car parts special that part is! It should be decent though, its most likely not the issue. I would check the compression if you have a tester and straight extension to see whats going on there!

@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering Год назад
@@steveo3002 there will be minor differences in aftermarket OEM silencers which may make a difference. It has a klarius middle and rear boxes with a BM Cat and BM Downpipe. It's certainly more audible than the exhaust that was on the car 10 years ago... but then again it was very sooted up and after barely covering 500 miles since this was fitted it may still be very metallic until its fully sooted up! It takes at least 1k to do that on these.
