I don't even own a tractor but I watch Rachel's videos every night she's brilliant! I do own a model A Ford sedan so the engine on an early 8n are about the same. Absolutely Awesome videos!
Good ole1970's Ford diesels Very underrated in my opinion. Wonderful that you are showing how to repair them and offering parts. Lots of them around. With a little TLC. Have tons more life left in them. Thanks Gingells!!👍
Another awesome video. Small engine repair is my main hobby job. But, I love learning about larger equipment. Thank for the effort and time that you put into explaining it to us.
Don,t like the way you're using the top of your battery as a tool tray with exposed terminals! It's bad practice and a bad example to show people. Otherwise I generally like your videos.
Or pop into AutoZone and gather up a handful of the black plastic caps for the negative terminal. I slightly chided Sarah-n-Tuned for installing battery cables in reverse of safe order. She responded that she had installed thousands of batteries and it doesn't matter.
had a 3000 on the farm as a kid,it was a bugger to start.glowing, cold start button and crank away for a good 10-15 seconds then it came to life in grey diesel smoke.hence the long big battery. my grandad used the battery as a working table.with the old style battery with outside couplers between each cell. a wrench got some welding marks is all I need to say xD. it was a strong little tractor with 3 litre ,3 cyl. 65horses i think.
Rachel, just wanted to say Thank you. I'm new to tractors and have a old ford 3000, after watching this video I was able to replace my worn out fuel injectors, with no problem. FYI I ordered them from your website, super fast shipping parts fit perfectly. Thanks
Rachel...as a former tank mechanic in the British Army, and having always wanted an old tractor, you have inspired me to buy one. Your mechanical abilities and instructional qualities are sublime. Your are charismatic, eloquent, determined and strong. A dream to watch.
wow your pretty girl,my father had 5000 same problem but scared of replacement and still fuel was spilling for 2 years.Hard to find mechanic yet my two brother they do machinery but the our father had the author so they should not touch the 30 yr old.Ford 5000 LMAO . from Philippines ty
Thanks a lot! My injectors are still excellent on my 3055 (between 3000-4000, european model with modified 3000 engine and 4000 transmission and rear axle), but if ever something is wrong on my injectors, I know what to do!
Never use the battery as a “tool tray”. Sooner than later you lay something on there and cause a arc. I liked the video so much I purchased a new set of injectors, seals and a filter housing. Great job Rachael!
Hello, I have a ford 3400 and my tractor starts really easy but smokes a lot in the beginning. it is mostly white smoke and smells like fuel. The smoke somewhat clears up once the tractor is warm and is being used but returns if I leave the tractor running at idle speeds. Any idea what might be the issue? If its injector pump related, does this tutorial apply to Ford 3400? thanks in advance!
Rachel ! So glad to find you. I’ve inherited Dad’s 1710 Ford tractor. The hood is bent/tweaked and must be removed to straighten. Is there any way you have a video or directions, pros and cons, or “look out for this before attempting ?” My manual says n o t h I n g …
My Injectors are 50 years old & they still work well & start up first time every time, has done over 20000 hours & never been overhauled, David Brown 990.
Rachel, I was wondering you were very specific about when you rebuild a injector to put the new tip on under fuel, then you pressure tested the injector and blew out the fuel, are new injectors shipped with fuel or was only to test the rebuilt injector ?
Hi mam what is difference between ford 3000..4000..and....5000. Engines i have 1971 3000 and i want more hp in it what modification i need to do with its engine. Can i make this 3 cyclndrs. 70 hp plz reply me thank you
I have a British built 1968 Ford 5000. It has the larger Diesel engine but runs ok. Any videos on replacing head gasket on a Massey Ferguson Perkins 3 cyl diesel engine? I have been reading your articles in the farming magazine didn’t know you had a RU-vid channel.
HOPEFULLY, he has put the camera on a tripod and is in the kitchen wearing yellow rubber gloves doing the housework, in a mini skirt ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f4Mc-NYPHaQ.html
I’m a certified welder by trade and also teach my trade on a professional level. I as well work on my own tractors, backhoes, etc. Rachel you are absolutely stunning with your knowledge and professionalism on what you are presenting and teaching. Great job on what you do!
This type of nozzle can be re worked to perform as when new by grinding the needle and nozzle base and lapping together. Also when stripping an injector it's best practice to undo the top cover and release the pressure first as this will allow deeper seating of the 2 delicate pins that locate the nozzle. Re set the pressure after re build probably 175 ats. Always make sure you fit the correct nozzle by checking the despatch numbers on the body of injector and the DLLA150S ... number on the nozzle. The last didgets are most important. Otherwise an informative video.
A T, you sound like you've been there-done that. You brought back fond memories. In Vo-Tech we also lapped injectors and shimmed them up to specified breaking pressures. It really makes a difference in how the engine starts & performs. Also, it's amazing how many new ones come out of the box not atomizing. I ALWAYS check them. Not everyone has a test stand though.
I was raised on a farm and we operated most of the tractors Rachel works on. Today I'm a dentist and I certainly wish Rachel taught dental continuing education...I would certainly stay awake for that. She's so well trained and articulate. I can tell that her vocabulary is the language of tractor mechanics. I like all things mechanical from grandfather clocks to high power rockets and I love her tractor talk. Dr. Mark Carr
My Ford 4000 loses fuel prime if it sets for a week or so. Eventually I can get it going by repriming it, but it loses its prime after about an hour of operation. Then I have to start all over again. There seems to be air getting in somewhere because when I open the screw on the injector pump there is some air in the fule there and when I pump the reprime pump below the injector pump there is air there. Of course there is no fuel at the injectors on the head themselves until I get the air out of the system thru the button pump. Just before the engine quits it accelerates like it got a rick mixture or some more fuel and then it starts sputtering. Ideas?
As always another Great Dan / Rachel well informed tractor video. I hope as myself people buy the parts you use and found to be good that work on these tractors and also that you offer for sale to help pay for these must have video's? I learn buy doing and watching...
Hi i dont know your name but i.have a 1800 oliver gas iam.looking for someone that has a allready motor a rebuild motor everything in.it. maybe you.could but my.oliver back.together. i.really miss this tractor Please let me know. I have a Ford 4000 select o speed. I have diesel pouring out the filter on the side of the head. I know nothing about tractors. I love this tractor and its power. Could I get you to fix it, maybe injectors or rebuild and fix my pto so it wont be running all the time.
As a lifelong mechanic and service specialist on boats and cars, I was always surprised how few women took to being experienced in auto or boat repair, but lately the tides have turned and Ive met lots of women in the field, who often are better techs or more meticulous than most of the guys I’ve known over the years, and the trend should continue, especially on RU-vid with all the female racers, mechanics, and techs...Rachel you’re an inspiration to young women everywhere for your attention to detail and your great mind for products and services in multiple fields, Dan you must be one proud dad, cheers y’all your videos are excellent!
How do you know that she's an inspiration to young women everywhere? Have you talked to young women everywhere? Just curious as to why you would say that.
However (comma) I would recommend spraying into a clear jar (a clean peanut butter jar will do) rather than allowing the spray to just flow uncollected. My tester is bench mounted and the injector mount is at the front.
I had a 5000 with a full cab and doors with a back glass. The only one I've seen. Wished I'd never sold it. How many where there and was it an after market thing or was it factory. I still have the doors and back glass
I was donated a ford 3000 (1968) Im a new sub,..find your videos to be very well done. do you have a video on rebuilding a 3000 engine ,.. this engine I have was overheated and is seized ,..can use as much help as I can ,..thank you Blessings
Here are two steps how to check the injectors without even removing them from the engine. These tests assume a rotary injection pump is used. If the engine has an inline pump then injector pump problems could give the same effect as a faulty injector. Assuming the engine will run: 1. Disconnect the leakdown pipes and direct the injector leakdown into a clear plastic bottle per cylinder. Run for a few minutes and check how much fuel is in each bottle. If a bottle has nothing the valve may be stuck open. If there is much more than an egg cup full of fuel then the valve is leaking too much and would benefit from replacing. A quicker but messy alternative is just to run without the leakdown pipes and see how much fuel is discharged. 2. With something to catch any fuel, try each injector in turn releasing the fuel pipe nut ½ a turn. If the engine note changes then the injector is at least doing something. If there is no change then the cylinder isn’t firing - if compression is ok then the injector is likely to be faulty. And this is a method to test them by using the engine's own injection pump: With the engine disabled from running (e.g. glowplugs out), remove injectors one at a time and reconnect to their fuel line with the nozzle into a clear plastic bottle. Take great care to keep well out of the spray and safety glasses are a good idea. Crank the engine and observe the spray through the bottle wall - it should be a uniform fine mist. Compare all cylinders - any injectors that look poor should be rebuilt. - Well, engines like this have no glow plugs, so you just have to release fuel pipes from all injectors. There's also a method to test if the fault is in the pump: Change the place of the injectors! If you replace an injector that seems to be faulty with a sound one and test it again with the last method I mentioned. If it still doesn't work properly, the pump is the problem.
Hey Rachel - thanks for the great tutorial. I'm getting diesel in the crankcase of my 70's FORD 5000 Row Crop. I've heard to suspect Injector Pump Seal, Fuel Pump or Injectors. Do you have instruction on replacing the front seal on the injector pump?
I have an older Ford 555 backhoe with fuel problems. Do you have a video of a fuel pump repair that would be comparable to my diesel 3 cy? The tractor has a plate inside the wheel well with numbers stamped on it. Series 19-803, serial number CB 35283. Thank you.
I have a ford 841 diesel. Can you tell me if they are the same as the ford 5000? My tractor runs rich and has a 172 engine. Pistons are perfect and head was just redone.
I miss a video where you show how to remove and install a Simms fuel injection pump on a Ford 5000 (1965). (I'm not going to do any work on the pump. I just need to remove it so I can take it to a workshop). - Or do anyone know if a video exists somewhere else?
Well you now don't have any cookware left in your kitchen ?? LOL . Please tie your hair back out the way of any moving parts tho ! . Very informative video . Nice one
You didn't hear what I said. Can you rebuild and take apart the injectors clean the Assembly and tips with brass brushes and reset the spray pattern. With bench equipment. By hand.
It’s called a nozzle not a tip. Just to clarify. You also don’t need to rebuild them under fuel like she did because all your going to do is get the dirty contaminants on the outside in the tub of fuel then into your injector
Love your knowledge of these machines! Have you thought about doing a video (maybe you already have?!) for those of us who want to get into vintage tractors? Good models/brands to start with? Some gearheads need new outlets for tinkering, and I just acquired a bunch of Snap On tools in fractional sizes (all my cars are metric)! Thanks!
Nice tutorial. i would have purchased some injection parts from you for my Ford 3000 but im far away. Nairobi -Kenya. but thanks the tutorials are equally helpful..whats the pressure on the injector nozzle
