After driving the Ford Mustang Mach-E press car in January 2021, we immediately knew that in most of the ways that mattered, Ford had seemingly built a better Tesla. So Matt bought one for himself and his wife. Now, two years and 17,000 miles later, Zack and Matt take a road trip to Arizona to discuss the ups and downs of 2 years of Mach-E ownership, as well as demonstrate the charge network (and see some awesome stand--up comedy).

The audio gets out of sync around 14 minutes but is fixed about a minute later. It's fine in the project file so something happened during export or RU-vid processing *shrug*. Sorry!

To learn how to charge more efficiently on road trips follow Bjorn Nyland (especially his 1,000 km challenge series) and Tom Moloughney on this site. Short answer: arrive at charger with less 'in the tank' and leave with just enough to get to the next charger. (and don't block 350 chargers w/ a car that can only take 150)

It happens and boy did that happen in the best spot. Because you are right, range is masking another problem with the EV discussion and that is infrastructure and maintenance. That is a hard ass topic at the best of times because I am a 90's boy and all these gas stations just exist, there was a time where that wasn't the case and EV's are at that starting point, which doesn't help when one maker uses a proprietary plug for its charging network but that is another topic.

You're 100% correct that if you have a non-Tesla EV relying on the CCS network, it's charging anxiety. I'm not even going to say infrastructure anxiety, because even if the infrastructure is 100%, you still have to deal with people at the charger. Be that lines, people done and not moving their car, using the wrong charging apparatus (i need 350kW because it's fast...even though my car can only charge at 150kW max), etc. Thanks for the full review of your car.

Infrastructure Anxiety is 100% spot on. I had a 300k trip in a Nissan Leaf which turned into a total disaster. Chargers missing from where they should be, chargers vandalised or not working, it was a total nightmare and has put me off switching until Ireland has a reliable charger network.

People used to be so idiotic about charging ports. When they started putting them in Texas, grown men were destroying the ports and laughing about it because they thought EVs were lame. I’ve been on the fence about getting one, but I’m really leaning toward getting a used Mach E this year.

Hey, quick tip from own Mach E ownership experience (22 AWD extended range). If you find an EA station with a 350 charger that has the reduced power screen, but there are 150’s available - take the 150. I started on the 350 with roughly the same state of charge as you, and was getting about 80kWh - then switched to a 150 station after a few minutes. Rate shot up to 120kWh for a while. Was glad I swapped. Thanks for the video! Loved it.

As a Ford sales consultant... the window issue is very easy to reprogram yourself. Just hold the button until it stops at the top, then release and hold it again for 5 seconds. Then repeat the same process going down. It trains the motor to recognize what fully closed and fully open are.

One thing I'll add is that living in the middle of the northeast conurban sprawl, the charging network is not bad. Electrify America sucks. You nailed it with infrastructure anxiety. I've taken my i4 on a few short trips that require charging and it's maddening. Chargers that randomly lose connection after 1 or 2 minutes, chargers that are supposed to deliver 150+Kwh and they deliver 50-60. Just ridiculous.

Great video Matt! One major gripe though. As a Taycan owner, there’s nothing worse than pulling up to a charging station when multiple 150kw chargers are free and there’s a Mach-E (which tops out at 150kw) or an iD4 (which also tops out of 150kw) taking up one of or both of the 350kw chargers. PLEASE, I beg, EV owners out there- you need to know the charging profiles of your cars so you don’t inconvenience others. It’s not as cut-and-dry as a gas station.
@cgamiga

Agreed! .. and especially, 50KW max Bolts, and also VW id.4 charging up to 100% on free charging... use the slow chargers, for the benefit of others! (curious, if the slow 80kw first charge stop, might have gone faster on the 150kw stall if existed?)

Yes, it's very frustrating with people like this RU-vidr who doesn't even understand that he doesn't benefit from a 350kw charger and that the 80kw he is charging at is due to his battery, not the EA charger!

Great video, Matt! I always enjoy long-term reviews like these because you get the kind of info that is truly useful if you are looking to own the vehicle in question. I'm glad to hear it's held up pretty well, though I am surprised by the buttons rubbing off. Probably some kind of supplier issue that hopefully has been improved. Shame about the chargers, but we all know how that goes...I do wonder how long it will take for the charging network to become as reliable as putting gas in a gas tank.
@MindofMatter
@MindofMatter Год назад
The 81kw is not necessarily due to EA throttling....since you are charging your battery at 40% SOC, more than likely the 81kw is due to the Mach E programming preventing too much juice from getting to the battery and overheating/hurting it. EVs like these have a pre-determined charge curve algorithm to maintain battery health.

Much prefer this format. Very obvious that the more lengthy editing process permits you guys to be painstaking/precise with your choices in presentation (though it makes stuff like the audio sync problem even more frustrating). Matt is absolutely correct about this and the enthusiast community needs to push that message. Great video!

Matt, I'm 7 months and 6000 miles into my 2022 Mach-E GT ownership. I use CarPlay with a cable, and the only issue I've had has been occasionally needing to manually trigger the connection from the Phone menu. I also haven't had the same issue with emergency braking. Not doubting your experience, just adding a bit of anecdata. I have yet to take mine on a road trip where I've needed public charging, but since my roadtrips will generally be in the Boston-Washington corridor, I don't expect problems. Thank you for the detailed ownership report. Use it in continued good health!

@flashoflight8160 Год назад
Thank you for the great video. I really appreciated how you separated range anxiety and infrastructure anxiety despite the best efforts of Electrify America. The pacing around at the charging station was a great way to show how lame the charging time can be in real life on a out-of-town trip even with a well planned route. Meanwhile there was a shot of the ICE cars smoking you time-wise even though you were speeding excessively. You just hook your ICE to the pump, go into the gas station to do #1, and come back to a fully fueled ICE car and go while you laugh at the Teslas stuck at the charging stations. EVs are for home charging and driving around the city.

The window up and down issue is not just a Mach e issue. I’ve owned 3 mustangs, a 2013 v6, a 2014 gt, and now a 2013 gt500. My wife’s 2019 escape has done it intermittently as well. They ALL have this issue, particularly if you time the roll up with an electrical event (AC compressor turning on, ignition turning off, radiator fans turning on) my more mechanically inclined friends pointed out it’s the window triggering a high/low load/voltage on the motor, basically simulating someone’s hand being stuck in the crack while rolling up so it panics and rolls the window back down to prevent harm. Strange they still haven’t fixed it

You can program the windows yourself. From the up position roll then down with the button the entire time. When it is fully down continue holding the button for a couple of seconds. Roll it up holding the button the entire time the for a few seconds after it is up. The auto up/down will now properly work. This process is the same for many vehicles.

If all these electric cars are soulless appliances for commuting and to serve a utilitarian purpose, I would 1000% get a tesla on the basis of charging infrastructure and quality alone. I drive a 328d touring and can add 1000 km of range in sub 5 min, this would be infuriating.

For all of Tesla‘s issues, the fact that they focused on and built out their own charging net work, because they didn’t want to rely on someone else doing it for them is forever their own advantage. Their prices are way cheaper than all the other charging companies, I can’t believe that some of those charge more than it would cost to fill up a tank of gas. And I cannot tell you the struggle that I’ve had showing neighbors on the new Volkswagen ID4 how to charge their car - and so many of the Chargers are out of service, don’t charge anywhere near the advertised rate or you can’t get it to work/pay

They were very heavily subsidized and given opportunities by the American government that other Brands could not avail of. Elon is a master of "convincing" and/or political chess behind the scenes to get what he wants without actually paying for it. Exactly what a Con does best. I personally do not like a infrastructure that only caters to one brand. If gas stations did this, it would have hindered ICE considerably. Tesla isn't very good at building cars, and that is evident within 5 mins of driving one. But they do have the infrastructure nailed down and if they were to focus on that, the one thing they really are good at, they wouldn't even need to sell cars.

You are exactly correct about the infrastructure anxiety!!! I am so interested in the Mach-E, but I don't know if I'd ever not be panicked about the ineffective charging system. I used an EV Volvo loaner (after being a Tesla, Model S, P85D owner for 8 years) and could not get one single charger to work. I had to download an app to find the chargers. One was not there at all and the Harley Davidson dealership had no idea about the charger that was right in front of their facility. Across the freeway, there were four chargers. One had a guy sleeping in his car, one had no one in the car, one had a guy with a loaner from the airport in Dallas, Tx. heading to Houston, Texas (5 hour drive), and the 4th one had a cracked screen and was inoperable. I told the guy heading to Houston in an AVIS EV loaner that he should go back to the airport and get another vehicle that did not need charging.

If you are going to get an EV just get a Tesla. Yes Elon sucks but the car itself is superior to all other available EVs. This is because this is all that Tesla does this has been 100% of their focus since inception. Ford, GM, etc are just making EVs to not be left behind.

I was never against EVs but also wasn't excited about them. After detailing for a long time I've noticed that high quality interiors clean nicely, if a material starts disintegrating from the mildest cleaners it's basically cheap junk. After cleaning a Mach-E I was pretty impressed with the interior quality, it was a family car so it was pretty dirty but cleaned up nicely, and looked like a premium quality interior once cleaned. Also it was very simple and intuitive to turn off the touch screen to clean, and it stayed off while cleaning, I've noticed some new car touch screens are touch to turn on even in cleaning mode (BMW) which is very silly.

We bought my wife the premium, long range, AWD Mach E in November. All in, a great car. She loves it. Her work has her driving 40-80 miles a day and we just charge it overnight on a 240V outlet in our garage. No issue. We have my ‘20 Explorer ST for actual road trips. Same issue with CarPlay on the ME. 1/10, maybe more, it struggles to connect. Plugging in USB seems a bit better. Interestingly, the one generation older system in my Explorer is a bit more reliable.

I like the Mach E as a value proposition vs the model Y because: higher quality build, availability of siriusxm, in 2024 access to Tesla Supercharger network + Bluecruise availability/subscription with all trims! And yes, the issue with non-teslas in infrastructure anxiety not range!

I have never had the window issue or the app issue. As for apple car play. In the beginning I did have issues with it. Now it seems to work all the time. But I always plug my phone in, I don't like how slow the wireless charging is. Also, there is a way to reboot your screen without turning the car off and on again. So if you don't connect, just reboot the computer screen by holding down the volume and the right(skip) arrow for a few seconds.

My wife has a 2022 MachE with CarPlay has been seamless. Also, not sure if it occurred in an update after this video was made, but they came out with a software update to allow for better handling of multiple phones setup with wireless CarPlay. You can now set a favorite / default as well as easily switch between the phone being used for CarPlay connection. Plug and charge has also been seamless for me (only public charged around 10 times in the 1.5 years we’ve had it). Charging speed is more on electrify America, but I’ve gotten expected charge levels at my local stations here in NY (they are all relatively new though). Honestly the only thing I don’t like about our MachE is the ride quality. It’s very bumpy (standard suspension) likely because there isn’t much room for suspension travel combined with the heavier weight due to design of the vehicle. Other than that, really have no complaints other than cold weather / winter range loss is a bit higher than other EVs due to lack of heat pump for hvac heating in the car.

One type of test you could try and replicate would be the of a electric car owner that lives in a apartment without parking. Maybe a one or two day test of charging a car, and have day around the towns and see how different would be from a normal combustion car ( the expenses, how the stress levels would be different, etc) to see if not having personal charging at home is really a deal breaker or not ( in a city, off course, out of town it's a different ball game)

I have a July 2022 build and this tracks well with my experience too, but with less car play issues. Just a great daily driver if you have a level 2 at home driving less than 150 miles. Longer trips and calling it charger anxiety is spot on. Just need to plan on those trips taking a little longer with a little bit more planning.

If the Mustang Mach e accepts 150kw and you plug into a potential 350kw charger you will never realize that level power. Even if the charger is rated at 150-350 kw it also depends on your state if charge. Max charging speeds is only possible at lower levels if charge and it will throttle back as the charge level in the battery builds. But this video is a yr old so I guess you've figured this out by now. Further you charged to 86% it's likely not the most efficient level to charge to. You need to plan your trip where it's likely charging what you "need" is possibly faster than aiming at really high levels of charge. It could be,,, stopping twice for 15 min is better than once for 40 min. Use A Better Route Planner and the route creation is really good. Also set a charge location in your car nab system and then set a backup nearby in your phone. Sounds like a hassle but the backup provides for less stress. Finally while it's nice to go 80mph and just power on if you can see your way to the speed limit or a tiny bit less you will likely get there faster if you need one less stop. Convenient? Nope, but a routine makes EV use not as frustrating while the infrastructure evolves. 👍

"Infrastructure anxiety" is the right way to say it! I have to do a roadtrip in an ev this summer probably and my biggest anxiety is the charger network. also good to see the "real" expectation should be 80kwh or 100kwh on a fast charger. I wont believe the 150kw or 350kw marketing sticker on the chargers then

Do you or your wife use lots of hand sanitizer? I ask because I read that the pandemic fueled a lot of these issues with the paint flaking off the buttons,like the skip button on your Mach E, because people would get in the car and use sanitizer before touching anything in their car and then the alcohol in the sanitizer breaks down the paint over time.
