In this video I install the Ford Racing Hot Rod Cams, Intake and Throttle Body in my
Mustang GT. At the end of the video I take it for a quick test drive so you can hear the sound inside and outside of the vehicle.
I have never been into the internals of an engine and never installed cams in a car in my life. I am very mechanical and can dig into anything once researched and have to give it to all the great RU-vid instructional videos. I tend to over analyze everything and have been watching cam install videos for over a year before jumping into this job.

Did you use the timing chain wedge tool and do you need to?

@@talinegle6182 I did and you absolutely have to use the timing chain wedge tool. If you do not the timing chain will fall off the bottom sprocket and you will 100% have to remove the entire front of your engine at that point. It's a cheap tool and can be easily purchased on Amazon.

I'd recommend getting a catch can, I had one on my 3v and caught about 12 ounces of oil in about 20k.

I will be purchasing one up very soon. When I picked up my old intake off the floor there was way more oil on the ground than I was comfortable with.

@@sofakingraw4149 Cams affect what rpm range your motor will make the most torque. As horsepower is a function of torque, by moving that peak torque up in rpm, you gain power. In doing this, however, you lose lower-rpm torque, which is most directly associatated with how the car drives on the street, aka "streetability" and depending on your cam selection lower MPG.

@@sofakingraw4149 OH LOL sorry. I personally don’t think there are any cons to a catch can except for the extra maintenance step of emptying it during every oil change. Pros are that it filters oil and sediment from getting into your intake which over time will decrease horsepower and fuel efficiency. I took my old intake off and set it on the garage floor while installing the new one. 2 days later I picked it up and there was a small pool of oil on the cement. Proof that the oil from “blow by” does indeed make its way into your intake.

Did you have to compres the spring and remove the followers on cylinder 5 and 7 ? Late model restoration posted a video and they did , I was just wondering if it was necessary

Thanks for posting this video! I have a 2006 mustang gt and i want to do the same mods. I have a question for you. What is your mpg since installing the cam and intake? I use my mustang for daily commuting on the highway and that’s my only concern.

I'm building up my own s197 GT and s197 when looking into cams I've found that as long as the cams don't require phaser limited it won't kill your gas mileage. Maybe see a tiny drop or gain on fuel economy. Mutha thumprs were gonna be my go to but after finding out they're mainly for sound and require phaser limiters I decided to maybe consider Detroit rockers or maybe FRPP cams. I'm still researching and learning so I could be misproven if you've found ways to work around the downsides. Since FRPP cams harm low end performance people will go up to 4.10 gears but that hurts max speed and fuel economy. Cams are tricky so do let me know if you think you can tell me something that could help me

I know this comment is old now, but I installed the hot rod cams on my mustang and actually saw an increase in gas mileage, I also switched from a BAMA tune to a Lito tune, so that could’ve been a factor as well

@@plasticcommando4486 is exactly correct. I'd hate to give you an idea on gas mileage because I installed 4:10. Interstate speeds is around 16-17 because my RPM's are so high due to the gears.

If I remember correctly I didn't use a new gasket. Specs just called for a dab of sealant.

Wow same thing happened to me but I was dumb and never checked under the air manafold and I was doing donuts and I caught it on fire and I’m trying to rebuild it now

if I remember correctly it was close to $2,000. i bought from both American muscle and CJ Pony parts. As for recommendations on your year and mileage I wouldn't know but post up in a forum. Plenty of helpful folks there!!

If anyone can answer this, I would appreciate it greatly. I have a 05 Mustang GT with 38k miles and I'm hoping to replace only the cams with new Ford Performance Hot Rod Cams. The car has been taken care of for those 17 years, but I'm not sure if it is a good idea to replace the springs/the entire valves since they are that old . Do you think the valves will be fine with those cams?

My car had about the same mileage when I did the job. I did not replace and springs or lifters and it is not required with these cams. A tune is required though.

@@ryesagainstthemachine2995 Gotcha. I just wasn’t sure how aggressive those cams are even though Ford says that they will be fine. I have a local tuner that I like so I’ll have that towed to his shop. I appreciate your help man!

@Rodger Langley what else do you have done to the car? I ask only because you won't get much gain without some decent headers. If your looking just for the aggressive sound you'll get it but without other mods like headers and some more room for the car to breath with intake or throttle body you won't get much HP gain.

Other than knocking a follower off in the beginning and leaving a socket on the crank, any other install issues or problems after? Debating on doing mine myself this weekend!

Nope. I was very careful and meticulous. I followed the instruction carefully. It was a very fun and rewarding job and im happy I tackled it myself. Car has been running amazingly for months now.

You will need to get a custom tune made. I used LITO. If you google LITO tune you will see a ton of infomration, mostly on forums, on how this is done.

I’m curious I have the cams sitting in my room but I don’t have a tuner cause I read the description on AM that it recommends a tune for it to squeeze out that extra hp, but does it really need to be flashed after the cam install due to it running with the stock phasers and lashers also cause it’s made by the same ford guys who designed the stock cams? I’m still gonna buy the tune either way but I just want to know if it’s recommended or mandatory

I believe it is merely recommended not 100% sure. I would 100% go with the tune. You spent the money on the cams so why not get every ounce out of them.

I saw a test with that intake . It's only good on top (very top) and looses a lot of torque all the way through . I think it's only good for an all out rpm car .

BAMA tune is good with a CAI but if you go deeper like cams I would check the forums. You will see that most people go with LITO for there tune. BAMA canned tunes are not optimal at all!!! I purchased from American Muscle and CJ Pony Parts. Each had certain parts that were cheaper so I split the order.

@@kevinmccaffrey9195 You can check in your area. Search dyno tune or speed shop. I got mine done in Baton Rouge at a place called Stang-Hi performance. They have since moved somewhere in Ascension Parish. They are good at what they do but you will pay for that expertise.

Those bama tuners are alright but I would HIGHLY recommend getting it dyno tuned it would be well worth the cost and would be better for the emgine

I have a custom tune and not a Bama. Would never get a Bana tune for anything than a CAI and even then probably wouldn't

I saw a dyno of that manifold and it was not good. It did make 10 more HP than factory but that was right at the top end. Everywhere else it was down by a lot of power. I imagine with the cam it's probably even worse. They said it would be great for boosted setups but not NA.

Can’t be quite sure but during my last tune I had it dyno tuned and it was putting 318 at the rear wheels.

318 is appropriate for cold air and tuned. But with cams and intake manifold plus cold air and tune.. hopefully x pipe. My guess is 350 wheel

Yes and RTV Sealant in the same place that it was when you removed it. My valve covers came with the gasket installed.
