FULL MUSTANG V 370Z COMPARO @ INSIDELINE.COM:
www.edmunds.com...
When we last left the 2009 Nissan 370Z, it had just laid a drubbing on BMW's little 135i. We then proclaimed, "The 2009 Nissan 370Z raises the standard for the sport coupe segment to a new level of affordable excellence."
Time to get more serious. It's V8 time. Who's in? Let's see, no Camaro, and a Challenger is not available (don't ask), so that leaves the freshly updated 2010 Ford Mustang GT, a car whose very existence is predicated upon wallet-friendly performance.
Perhaps a reinvigorated veteran can take down the newly crowned king. The particulars might differ - four seats versus two, V8 versus V6 - but the mission is the same. And the 2009 Nissan 370Z and 2010 Ford Mustang GT are priced closer than you might think.

I remember those days, back when imports out performed the domestics in their class. Sadly imports have not kept pace with the performance of domestics in their price range. Example: STi and Evo vs Camaro and Mustang. Used to be an Evo or STi was the performance bargain. Now neither compares well to a GT 5.0, Boss, or Camaro 1LE.

I think the Japanese market is not particularly concerned with American muscle anymore if I'm being honest. In interviews, Nissan has said that their performance benchmark for the 370z was a Porsche Cayman and for the GT-R it was a Porsche 911 Turbo. They are either obsessed with Porsche, or focusing their effort on the European market instead.

after owning the 370z for a year now...i must say is very reliable no problem at all!! it has some problems with visibility a lot of blind spots and it would need an oil cooler if you are going to track it. You should also have a second car for daily driving because is almost impossible to drive it slow the car handles so so great that going for lunch transforms into a track day. I have it with the sport pack the brakes are pure magic and the rev-match feature will make u drive like Schumacher.

It's 2024 and both of these cars have aged like fine wine. I daily a 2017 370Z and love it to death. It feels like I'm driving a classic car because of how stripped down and raw feeling it is. The Mustangs of this time were the same way. When you sit down in either of these cars, you are transported back to a time before technology completely took over. The magic of analog sports cars is that they become more relevant the less relevant they become.

They can corner (especially compared to previous generations), they're just not really good at it. The V8 engine is very forgiving if you get things wrong because unlike the Z it has a little bit of low-end torque. You've gotta get the Z up to 3000 RPM before it puts out anything, so it's a good thing it is a real champ at maintaining speed through corners.

I have a 2019 370Z 6MT with the sport pkg that I took for a quick drive on the California coastal US 1 down from the Oregon border to the SF bay area, where I live. I encountered a late model Mustang GT(2018 or 2019) and we dueled it out on the twisty two-lane road. The Stang was ahead of me and so I used him as a pace car and had no trouble sticking to his tail. My car had power and handling potential in reserve, so I could have beaten him but elected not to push it on a road that had oncoming traffic to the left and cliffs over the Pacific ocean on the right. It was then that I really appreciated the handling performance of the car with its relatively light weight. Even though the Mustang had more hp, he was unable to use it fully for most of the drive because of his car's heavier weight. Later on, I think he may have been developing brake fade from repeated high speed braking around all the curves.

+Vasik Vasin Ahhh, if only Ford stopped making the Mustang after 2010, the 370Z owners could still have something to brag about. Problem is, the following year Ford swapped out the tired old 4.6L 3V for a fire breathing 5.0L TiVCT 4V and gave the car 100 extra horsepower....and made some suspension tweaks. The Nissan 370Z hasnt been able to hold a candle to is since.
@Marc99GT
@Marc99GT 13 лет назад
@mine1username I mostly agree with your statement. I owned and drag raced a 99 GT, thus the name, for years and NA it was not a threat at all. Where it did have its benefits was good flowing heads and low compression made it great for FI. I ran a Vortech V2 S-trim at 10-12 psi for years and then moved to a T76 turbo system. The ringlands and rods didn't like it for long. Getting a built 2V/3V block was/is inexpensive. The Coyote 5.0 is an incredible engine without question though.

Compare the same two cars after 7 years of normal use. The Z will still be in great shape, but the Mustang, not so much. American car manufacturers need to get with the program and start building more fuel efficient engines that produce more horsepower. I have a 2009 370Z Touring. If I drive the limit and don't wind out the gears, on the highway I have gotten 30mpg, and yet it can run 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds. This is all from a V6.
@MrGimmethreesteps
@MrGimmethreesteps 10 лет назад
I have had my mustang for 6 years of hard use and not a single engine problem. I do not get 30 mpg, but I have a larger trunk and more seats. These cars are not exactly apples to apples, but they are both respectable cars.
@VerisimilitudeDude
@VerisimilitudeDude 9 лет назад
Robert Kibler With upgraded tires, K&N drop ins and an auto tranny, you can do low 4's 0-60. The auto has shown to be consistently quicker than the manual. Even Motor Trend did an issue on this.
@robertk726
@robertk726 8 лет назад
+Verisimilitude Dude That may be true, but it isn't a fair comparison. You are modifying one and not the other.
@VerisimilitudeDude
@VerisimilitudeDude 8 лет назад
Robert Kibler Most magazines that did a 0-60 times recorded about a 4.6-4.7 second time for the manual Z. Motortrend magazine timed the automatic at about 2 tenths of a second quicker on average. That's what I have. I'm not doing a comparison, I'm just stating what's possible with just a few upgrades.
@robertk726
@robertk726 8 лет назад
+Verisimilitude Dude I understand what your saying, but my point is if the auto is that much quicker with a few upgrades, imagine what those upgrades will do for the manual. just a short throw shifter alone makes a HUGE difference.

2 seconds is a lot in a race. I understand the engineering in both cars. For I own a Ford and a Nissan. Not that many people can attest to that and the uninformed tend to underestimate the capabilities of a mustang. You can jump into a Nissan and instantly become a veteran racer. A mustang is like taming a wild beast. It has a learning curb that takes a little time to adapt. Once you do, turns or not you can take on a 370 easy. To solidify that race just throw a pair of wide sticking tires on the back. Then it won't even be a race

When he said that the engine sounds "harsh" when pushed, he didnt mean that it was too loud. I agree that when I drive a sports car, I want to hear the engine and exhaust... When I pushed a 350z, everything sounded fine, and nothin about the engine sound made me feel uneasy... but when I pushed a 370z, the way the engine sounded toward redline made me feel like somethin on the car was going to break or blow up... @TheMackSparrow I disagree slightly. What most people forget is that GT stands for Grand Touring, something we have lost in the US. This is a totally new Mustang, and is more close to a proper European touring car than a proper muscle car. People in the US will still drive the GT like a muscle car, because it's hard to re-learn 50 years of society. When you understand what grand touring is all about, this comparison makes perfect sense.
@mustangtibor

I agree. Put the new v6 stang against the 370z.. those two are the same class. New GT is on par with a M3 now.. plus its a 5.0, the GT in the video is a 315hp 2010.. not the 2011 5.0 which has 412hp :D and for those who say certain cars aren't reliable.. NO car is reliable, in reality that's just people who are broke or too cheap to go do regular maintenance who say that.. lets face it guys that oil isn't going to change itself. I have a 06 Stang and have never had one problem since day 1.

That Mustang is 4 years old. The 2011+ Mustang GT puts out 412hp, 390 lb/ft torque. The latest Nismo 370z puts out 350hp, 276 lb/ft tq. The live axle is not a big handicap. Ford Shelby GT500 outranked Camaro SS, BMW 135I, Jag XFR, Nismo 370Z, and Corvette Z1R, in Motor Trend's Best Driver's Car Test at Laguna Seca raceway, in 2009. The Shelby placed 5th behind, Caddy CTS-V, Mazda Miata, Audi R8. #1 was the Porsche Cayman S PDK. Sorry, no Focus, but damn do those magazine guys love that lil Miata
@Marc99GT
@Marc99GT 13 лет назад
The problem is we are living in the past when the 2011 Mustang GT does everything better and still does it on 87 octane and gets 26 mpg on the highway. Why would I think about a V6 now when I can get much more from a current V8 without sacrificing much of anything? It really doesn't make much sense. The 2012 Boss is going to be a killer in ever facet of performance including coming with launch control. If the GT was right there with the M3, the Boss Mustang will kill it everywhere.
@DoomsdayMelody91

@Wowmasta21 Exactly proved a point too, GTR is much heavier due to the fact that it has an AWD system, who said the ZR1 has better handling? I'll admit at a time ZR1 did have better handling, but it's 2011, GTR got a major redesign, slaloms at 74 mph, and skid pad ratings at 1.02g's. Two really great cars that accomplished a lot of things, beating out Ferraris and Porsches.

All in what you want. Brute Force vs. Precision handling. By all accounts, Ford has come a long way with their new suspension, but the reason the Z can run with the more powerful GT is because it's 500 lbs less. The Mustang coupe weighs the same as a fully loaded Nissan Maxima sedan. I'm a Nissan fan, but I'm considering a 302 Boss. As far as 2 door with rear seat performance though, I'm also looking at a third option... BMW 1 series M Coupe. Yummy.

In 2010, I pick the 370Z. The 4.6 is meh at best, even though it sounds great. The Nissan is just a more complete car. The V6 3.7 is kind of rough, but makes great power, and the auto-rev match is cool, if not slightly gimmicky. Now in 2014, I pick the Mustang GT. After 2011 (or should I say post-Camaro era), Mustangs have thoroughly reworked suspension setup (despite that live-axle rear) and that 5.0 has enough punch to whack the E92 M3 on the back of it's head. Also the interior vastly improved, whereas the 370Z didn't feel all that improved in the last couple of years. Since (as I would have configured, 6MT with some goodies on each car) will be ~$1000 cheaper for the Mustang GT (~$45,000) vs. the 370Z ($46,000), I think I'd take the V8 'Stang

I've seen new Z's for about $30k. The NISMO are around $45k, though. You're right on that. I guess it all depends on what you want in the car. Though, I don't disagree with you. I would probably take the GT over the Z. Given the choice, I might just spend the extra $10k and get the GT500. That and the addition of a back seat leaves the Z behind.

i never test drove the 370z until just 3 days ago .people that like this car either haven't driven German or just don't know about cars. when i drove it, I did not feel confident in its abilities, and I think the main reason for this is the lack of visibility. It also doesn't feel as quality as Audi and BMW which I have driven. It tries to imitate them by a rough ride and heavy steering but that is not what makes them

I hate how the commentator mentions lack of rear seats and 'harsh' engine noises when pushed. These are friggin SPORTS cars. You're not supposed to consider extra seats and a super quiet cabin when you want a sports car. Rear seats are a LUXURY intended for LUXURY or passenger cars. I was addressing the comment about live axle being a handicap. Reviewers like the cheaper GT as a driver's car too. They're surprised, live axle isn't that bad. Not worth arguing. Live axle will be dead by 2015 anyway. I think, car comparisons will always piss someone off. But, each car has it's merits and faults. Most of these cars have been around so long and have been so perfected, reviewers are now tempted to compare very dissimilar models like Miata and Shelby. Truth? They're all good cars

ok number one: I personally say the Mustang looks better than the Z. But, then again, I'm not stupid enough to argue looks because everyone has different opinions. Number 2, the only thing the Z does better than the Mustang is turns, it doesn't "kill" the GT. And this was the old engine, I'd like to see it go in a race against the 5.0. Although I will admit, if theres enough turns the Z would be pretty evenly matched.

The 2011 mustang v6 would never beat a 2010 mustang gt. The v6 has almost as much horsepower, but the torque is what wins races. And a v6 will never out torque a gt.

Here in America, the majority of roads are straight line. So yeah, power is way more important than handling.

@MrNoclutch I agree 100%. I remember when I bought my 99 GT auto in December of 98 when they first came out. Ford did a smart thing by selling cars and letting the aftermarket do the rest. Sure the 350Z and 370Z might have been slightly quicker, but Ford sold more Mustangs than Nissan could dream of selling Zs. It is not always about performance off of the lot as GM learned with the LS1 Camaros and Firebirds. Some mods later and my 99 GT was in the 10s on 93 octane. Great platform to build on.

@therookie93, Ford response about the live axle was that " an upgrade would have risen the price of each car by 5000 bucks". Now if you have over 300 Horsepower, you can lose just about any sports car coming out of a corner..

@worldtravel101 While I would normally agree, the new 5.0 is somehow keeping up with the M3 with a live axle. No clue how they did that but they did.

@DVcustomZ I have to agree 100% with that comment. I find Mustangs with flowmasters annoying and I personally hate those mufflers. I ran a Borla cat-back on my 99 GT. I spent alot of money on my 99 GT back in 2000 going from NA, Vortech V2-S-trim running low 12s to a Turbonetics T-76 running 10s on 93 octane. A Turbo V8 is deadly because spooling a T-76 didn't take long especially with a BB Turbo. I need another turbo V8.

I like the 2011 Mustang GT,but I wish it put out more power and had the handling of the 370 Z. And as far as the 370 Z goes,it is still a force to be reckoned with and has great potential up to it's GT-R counterpart.
@hotblume
@hotblume 12 лет назад
your right that its in the middle of the two but a v6 with a turbo or supercharged can compete with the 370 on a straight. and its not that much money to get it supercharged. but yea the live rear axle on the mustang is what makes it not able to handle curvy roads as well unless they were completely smooth. i think both cars are amazing. haha i have a 2013 gt so of course im gonna lean towards the mustang :)

The 2010 GT was a solid contender for the Z...but man the 2011 is a completely different monster. You would think with all of the extra power they would've raised the prices but nope..you can get a 400 hp v8 beast for 30 grand. Time for a new Z! Although i'm not sure how many more horses they could get out of that 3.7 liter. Might be time to throw in a turbo to make things interesting. Ah these are exciting times my friends...

LOL I know that, that's why I traded in my 2006 Nissan 350z with Vortech V-3 SCi supercharger with 440hp for my 2011 Mustang GT premium and tuned by Hennessey performance now making 490hp

I guess Edmunds needs to used the new 5.0 Mustang with 412 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque in a retest with the 370z. The V6 Mustang now has 300hp so they could use that too. Seems Ford has stepped up.
@BPoweredLove
@BPoweredLove 12 лет назад
Hey, sport. The Mustang GT didn't get 412hp until the new 5.0L motor in 2011. This one, as the video states, is a 2010 which used a 4.6L so the specs are correct.

@loucks428 I believe it. I just bypassed a leaking heater core on a Town car that had 288,XXX and it idles like stock. No smoke out of the tailpipe or hunting idle. People have no idea about the reliability of the 4.6l and the amount of abuse they take. I see them in Econoline E250 work vans with 185K and 200K after carrying heavy equipment and parts for HVAC guys and plumbers. Not the most power N/A, but can take abuse for well over 100K.

it is a bit sad that after all the generations the Mustang still has so much room for improvement, that been said I personally will always choose classic retro look and the american V8 sound over the competition, every time.

I can understand why you'd question how a slower car would "feel better"... but let me clear up a couple things. First, the 370z is only MARGINALLY faster than the 2010GT, and isn't faster at all against the 2011GT. I should also note that I've driven like 75 different cars, including two 370's and five S197 Mustangs (including two GT500s). After you drive more and more cars, you start to realize that torque is a better measure of fun than horsepower.

When shopping for a sports car, who complains about it being loud in the "cabin?" Sports cars are supposed to be loud-- loudness is the result of power. And who wants their V8 or souped up V6 to sound like a Buick inside?

If you are talking about the crap numbers from the GT, it's because the Mustang is a MY2010, which still had the 300hp 4.6. They didn't come out with the new 5.0 until 2011 :(.

yes, the turns. i love the massive power of the mustang. but it's only good for the first 5 seconds on the straight line. but when you drive a sports car with better handling, you can enjoy driving constantly around the corner. that's why mazda miata's are so popular among driver enthusiasts. it's low powered and small, but it's one hell of a ride in corners.

@runamoktoo Sorry, I ran out of space. The video on here with the BMW is called "super coupes track attack." Anyway, I'm really not trying to be confrontational. The 370Z is a fine vehicle and I'd jump on it if I had a chance to own one, but I personally think the mustang is a slightly better choice, especially considering it's cost compared to the nissan's. And with that lower price tag you still get more horsepower and beter track numbers. I hope that helped.

@DVcustomZ Only people that focus on PSi know very little about the importance of CFM and a turbos adiabatic efficiency at given compressor speeds. I drag raced a Turbocharged 99 GT which is well documented in 04/02 MM&FF magazine and built a, 87 Grand National from end to end so i'm quite familiar with static and effective compression ratios. It is not just about the static compression but the cfm moving through the 5.0L as well. The 9-10 psi is the limit due to the stock internals.

The 2012 GTR beat the 2011 ZO6 by .18( or a bumper distance) on a short road course. It beat the ZO6 in the quarter by a car length while the ZO6 had a higher trapspeed and was catching up. AWD, 4K launch and DCT are the only reason since the most important part of ET is the first 60 ft. If it beat the ZO6 by .18, that means it would have had no chance against the 2010+ ZR1 with PTM.

Yes i tore up my transmission when i was first learning to power shift. but now i have no problems whooping any rice cake on the track or the street. i respect the 370z and would have one if i didn't have a mustang. those stats may have been true in the 90's but i seriously doubt that dependability is that far apart now.

You don't know what you're talking about. Intake and exhaust adds 10~20hp at most. So, you have a 350hp 370Z that kills "any" V8s? Do you realize the newer Mustangs and Camaros have 400~600hp?

I notice that the 13.1 was posted but not the trapseed. that makes a difference as to how quickly that spread is growing. Also I would be interested in seeing the price as tested. That would also indicated that the 2011 GT would hit 60 in about 4.3 seconds. To bad the car stated as more for drag racing would have no problem beating the 370Z around a course. The Boss 302 is a destroyer on the track at 43K and with a sold axle. I certainly would never put a 370Z and a 911 in the same sentence.

okay, so I see how everyone always comments on these types of videos saying which car is better. Yes, mustangs are fast in straight lines, but they do corner, too, just slower. How many of these people saying the 370z is so much better at cornering are going to take these vehicles on a track, or even own them? lol. MAYBE 5-10% TOPS. how many are going to pull up to stop lights and race, or race their friends down a straight road? Probably closer to 80%. Plus, this is a 2010 mustang not a 5.0.
