It’s time for an America v Germany drag race!
We’ve got our hands on two Porsches - the Cayman GT4 and the entry-level 718. Alongside them, we’ve got the Ford Mustang Mach 1. Now you may think it’s a bit of an odd line-up, but when you check out the stats, you’ll see there’s a method in our madness!
Let’s start with the GT4. It’s powered by a 4-litre flat-six that can put down 420hp & 420Nm of torque. It’s RWD only and it’s also equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. In terms of weight, it tips the scales at 1420kg.
Alongside it, we have the 718. Now it’s the entry-level, so it’s only powered by a 2-litre flat-four turbocharged engine that puts down 300hp & 380Nm. It’s also RWD, however, it’s the lightest car here, at 1365kg. But that's not all - it's also the only automatic in the line-up!
Then finally we have the Mustang. It’s got a HUGE engine - a 5-litre naturally-aspirated V8, no less! It also puts down the most power, with 460hp & 529Nn. However, it’s also the heaviest, weighing in at 1807kg, and just like the GT4, it's a manual.
So what do you think - is the Mustang out of the running given the weight difference? And will the manual 718 take down the GT4? There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!

Include a manual T in that comparison. I did and decided that $86,700 as my T is optioned (PCCBs, Active Engine Mounts, LSD) saved me at least $25,000 to the S and $35,000 to the GTS and about half the price as a GT4 and this is without dealer markups. For a working class stuff like myself, it’s the T that won my comparison. I saved so much money over the other variants, it left me most happy I could do a mild tune and outperform all but the GT4 on track. Look at the torque to weight ratio of the cars and you will discover what I did. A manual T with PCCBs and manual seats is under 2900 Lbs and with a mild tune and cat-back exhaust get you 350 foot pounds of torque in a car that weight 2870 lbs is all the car you need. Not to mention it’s mid engine on the same tire sizes as a 911. The grip is astonishing! Porsche did us common people a big favor with the T package. Keep your shekels and tune your own 718 Cayman T.

As an owner of a "normal" Cayman PDK all I can say is I'm not surprised. I've owned my car for a lil over 4 years and every day it's a joy to drive and a Super Quick Beast on Socal Freeways. Just flat out Fassst ⚡

@atlantean1209 Gearing is great 1-7. Sport mode adds extra horsepower. I mainly use sport on the highway not regular roads. Handling is great too. No complaints also durability and maintenance has been no problems.

@@zshark365 sport mode does NOT add more horsepower. All it does is amplify throttle response to make it FEEL like it does. And it also produces the burps and farts from the exhaust. But it doesn't add more horsepower.

@@atlantean1209 I feel like there is a “valley of no hp” between 1->2. That bothered me so much that I ended up changing the tune for extra 70hp (which fixed the issue). Other than that, one of the best cars I’ve driven; other than the Emira.

This race just shows how brilliant DCTs are, shifts so quickly, the little 4-pot could hold its own. Plus, the Cayman is no slouch and contrary to popular belief, sounds good as well, when you’re in it and rumbling at low speed.

@@2tp223 And all because it “sounds terrible”… 😤😤🙄🙄 Sit in a 718 and the 981 in daily traffic, you’ll be happier in the 718. It doesn’t make as much symphonic noise at the top end, but the 981 might as well be an EV at Low speeds where most owners will find themselves driving the car. It’s only when you rev it out to 7000 plus, it sings away. The 718 still rumbles at a standstill and burbles as it pulls away from the lights.

I have a ‘17 Base Cayman. I did the quick mod where you slide one of the exhaust sleeves over to make a gap in between the mufflers. Sounds great. I get compliments on it all the time. Such a fun car!

I'd been backwards on forwards on if I should trade me 981 for a GT4 and in the end went for a 718 T, I've not looked back. I adore it on the roads, in the pouring rain on a country road it's so much fun.

Turbo charged torque and twin clutch auto are mad improvements in straight line performance. My cayman 987 with 5spd manual was slower in a straight line than mates tweaked golf GTD 7spd dsg!

I would really love to see a roll race between the base cayman and an automatic mustang. That 10 speed shifts damn near as fast as a DCT and with how close they were on that last race I’d like to see that again with somewhat level gearboxes.

The base cayman is a great deal in terms of driving experience, if there was anything in the market that quick but with 4 usable seats (without breaking the bank) I guess a manual M2 would be closer you can get

I have a manual MINI that was dynoed at 300 bhp. I paid $19,000 and put about $20,000 in mods (full bolt one, tune, suspension, and brakes). I know it’s crazy but it’s still cheaper than the base 718. 0-60 in the high 4 seconds Edit: IDK why you people replying are getting all bent out of shape. I’m just sharing what I did, I’m not saying this is the best option. I didn’t realize I’d offend you clowns with my project car. I can easily make it 400 WHP, yes WHP with an upgraded turbo but I like where it’s at because it’s not the only car I own.

I saw a Cayman GT4 while walking downtown yesterday. A rare warm chinook day for my Canadian self before we return to -20 in a week, and it was just beautiful. Covered in mud and silt, chilling on a street corner next to a convenience store. The owner was a man who looked to be in his late 30's. He strolled out of the store as I was walking up, coffee and box of Pop Tarts in hand. "Morning sir." I said involuntarily with a slight nod. "Mornin' son." and a crowd beating smile. He gave me a nice rev when he pulled out of the intersection.

I will one up with the Spyder!!!!.....IMO....but the GT4 is definitely a looker for sure. I think the GT4 looks great because it looks mean. I think the Spyder is just drop dead gorgeous! Prettiest car on the road IMO. The second prettiest(arguably the first) is the AMG GT!!!

@@geraldbuys9853 I'm aware that the manual Mustang isn't that fast, but it can do about a second better on the quarter mile. Driver likely can't shift, and it's not the first time a Mustang loses badly on the channel because of it. Check the Mustang vs LC500 video, same story. Why pick a manual against it in the first place? It's not like auto Mustangs are rare. Carwow always treats non-German brands unfairly, if you watch their reviews you'll understand. It's one of the reasons I don't take anything Mat says seriously.

Pretty good showcasing of the gearing issues modern manual transmission cars are "blessed with" having such long gearing to do better on paper with emissions (noise and CO2). Still the "small" Cayman is doing great. But there is no replacement for displacement in sound and longevity.

I’ve driven 1st gen 718 GTS (4 cyl); and I can tell you this car is POWERFUL; it has so much torque at a very low RPM. And once turbo’s are at full boost it just flies

Ironic cause the GT track pack with the auto box is faster than the Mach 1. It was actually a disappointment cause all the sources said it was going to be a 520hp GT350 successor. Would love to actually see a GT350 on carwow that 5.2 flat plane crank V8 is a monster motor

Those cars on the "dragy" leaderboards usually have different tires than street ones, and the fuel might be different. Also the automatic should shave some time off..

I see a lot hate thrown at the mustang and chest pounding over Europe and Porsche lol light, track focused 6 cyl and 4 bangers vs a big burly V8. Strange comparison. Porsche is about refinement, tech and efficiency on road and track. Mustang is about muscle, power and the feeling you get in a car listening to the V8 rumble. C8 corvette costs 58,000 base 90,000ish loaded GT4 used is 90,000ish GTS 86,000 If the comparison is apples to apples cost analysis of two cars that are similar in identity, then the test should have shown two cars designed around efficiency and on track performance. No one would argue about a maclaren or Lamborghini versus a Bentley continental GT in a similar race. That doesn’t mean Bentley won’t sell cars lol two different markets. IMHO

Y'all need to get someone who knows how to drive in that Mustang. Mustang GTs from 2002 with 285 hp could do a 13.7 qt/mi! That Mach 1 should be perfectly capable of doing a mid 12 no problem, but it takes skill to know how to launch and shift in those manual pony cars. 0/10 for that driver! 👎🏼🤨

I laughed so hard. I do 13.4 seconds in my 2003 Mustang GT. Yet mine has like 160 less hp. The British always mess up Mustang drag times. It’s like all they can handle is automatic mid engine cars!

Its done on purpose. The 718s and m5 lost to a mustang gt at mazda speed way during car and driver's lightning lap. So the mustangs can handle as well . Why do you think they never compared an m4 6speed to a gt350?

had a 718 base and added tuner and it was a monster, just a lovely engine.12.1 quarter mile without sports chrono. So fast and you can get over 30 miles to the gallon. Porsche base cars are not like other manufacturers base cars, you get serious performance..

In a real race done by a normal driver the mustang is faster in a straight line and on a road course . Look up car and driver's lightning lap . It even posted a better time than an M5. 13.7 ? You really believe that as true even though not a single test on a gt since 2011 was slower than 12.9 ?

What this told me is that for the performance and the sound, I made the right choice by picking a 981CS with the flat 6 NA, no PPF and a PDK. Base 718 probably beats it on the roll but I'll get over it. Never used to like Porsches but as soon as you spend time with one...yeah, they know what they're doing. Edit: Also braking, those porkers mullered the Mustang!

I'm not even sure how it's possible to run a 13.7 in a GT. I ran that at 105mph in my V6 mustang 10 years ago with just a tune, with some more mods I was running 12.5 at 115mph. And the fact that the 718 was keeping up with the GT4 also strange... the GT4 looks sick as fuck so it wins on that anyways.

Manual GT, simply really. It isn't a prepped drag strip. 12.5 at 115mph out of a V6 Mustang is horseshit. Tune only V6's also don't trap 105mph. It isn't strange at all, PDK vs a car that barely gets out of 3rd over the quarter...

What is clear is that the PDK launches more consistently and the Mustang GT is very sensitive to launch surface and temps. Clearly you don't actually understand what you are talking about.

Motorweek could do 12.4 second 1/4 mile with the regular mustang GT btw. Just a bad driver here. Even in a previous carwow race against the LC500, the GT did 12.6 seconds 1/4 mile.

Something was definitely off here. Even the 2005 to 2010 4.6 GT with only 300 horsepower was mid-13s in the quarter with the manual unless you completely blew the launch. ANY new V8 Mustang is a 12 second car, manual or otherwise.... unless you have absolutely no driving skill.

I believe when porsche gives its horsepower numbers, it's based off the power it makes to the wheels. Unlike most cars out there which they base their ratings by crank horsepower which looses almost 20% to the wheels. This mustang is making about 390 to 400 hp to the wheels. If a porsche 911 turbo s makes 650 to the wheels then that would translate to about 770 crank horsepower.

For some fun, I test drove a Ford Mustang GT 5.0L a couple of years ago and was very disappointed. Drove home in my Audi A6 2.8L Avant and it felt sooo fast and agile in comparison.

@@MacXpert74 The PDK is an option anyway? Some buyers are simply manual only, so they want it. The problem is it is a carry over gearbox from Audi that they modified slightly. Couple the carry over ratios designed to suit a 25inch tire and a 6500rpm peak to a 27 inch tire and 8000rpm peak...

Here in America 🇺🇸 the Mustang gt is 460 hp & the Mach 1 is 480hp. My 2018 GT 10 speed ran 12.2 @118 mph bone stock. Plus these cars are underrated most GTs make 480-490 crank power.

I believe the Mach 1 is 480 hp. The base GT is 460 hp. The Mach 1 features the gt350 intake (which you can see in the video) that gives it the extra 20 ponies.

Traded my 981 for a 718 T (so base engine but tons of chassis and suspension upgrades) and the thing flies, after driving a base Cayman before my T I knew I didn't need an S on the road and frankly on the track the only thing an S would have got me over the T (again, tons of chassis and suspension upgrades) would be a few 0.3 secs on the straights.

The problem with this video is comparing cars with no where equal value or engineering standards. I put my money in a 2021 Cayman T manual. The T package is a fantastic bargain. For $68,300 base price you get PASM that’s lowered 20mm, Sports Steering Plus, 911 S lightweight wheels, manual seats, sports exhaust and other lightweight options. I went for the following options; LSD, active motor mounts, light weight glass from GT4 and PCCBs, GT Silver metallic paint, active lighting that follows the steering wheel, Bose system and dual climate control, premium interior package with yellow contrast stitching, seats in SportsTex with yellow stitching brought the MSRP to $86,700, for which I paid. Does the T stand for Track, Turbo or Touring? I contend, my Cayman as optioned is all three. After installing a Cat-back exhaust and adding VP Racing octane booster (in California we only have 91) to run 95 octane in my tank at all times, the cars I can pull away from on street and track (especially when under way) is quite surprising. On a back road or hill climb, few cars can hang, and when they can, it’s only when there is an experienced driver behind the wheel. Best value for money if you want a proper light weight, mid-engine sports car, that you can daily or track or take on a road trip.

I have done a number of laps on a track in my base manual chasing a GT4 and eventually overtook it, we were both pretty novice drivers and a pro in a GT4 would be miles faster as they would no doubt get best out of it, but in real life not as much difference as the £30k price difference would suggest! PS they sound great if you turn off the fake sound generator don’t believe the Porsche snobs…
