One other tip: when trying to pop the cover off, try to pry it on the top section instead of the bottom just in case the "gasket area" gets gouged/scratched and might start leaking since the oil settles at the bottom. If the top section gets damaged at "gasket area" it will be less likely to leak. Thanks for the video, I am looking to swap diff cover on my regular F-150 since it has no drain hole.

@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Год назад
Amsoil is great. As for the weight, just keep in mind that the heavier the weight, the more load you put on the rear diff. If you do off-roading stick to something in the middle. I went with lighter oil so there is no load and I do 50k intervals for oil change rather than the recommended 100k

Yeah, friction modifier is only needed for the front diff. Rear diff is fine without it. That being said, there are several guides out there that seems to change based on the year. Not sure why since the differentials are all the same.

Helio, wanted to know what Torque wrench did you use specifically? I have 2 different 3/8 torque wrenches that both say they can go down to those low 30's but I was getting into the 20's and the bolt was starting to feel like it was going to snap so I backed off and eventually after 2 days I got a little seeping out of the bottom and just never went back in to properly torque. Curious which wrench you got specifically.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 года назад
I used a 1/4in torque wrench just for that reason. You have to convert to inch pounds, but way less risk of over torquing.
@MustafarRecRoom

I have this same cover, you’re right, the bolts that come with it are garbage….exact same thing happened to me…bolt head snapped off. Ended up using the OE bolts. If you live anywhere that gets snow/Winter, the paint finish on this cover isn’t that robust. It’s already peeling off and rusting. May swap out for a Hytec.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 года назад
Mine came a little damaged so it will eventually Peal. But I’m not worried here in so cal. As long as I keep running off-roading, the sand on the trails will keep the rust at bay
@ajstar89
@ajstar89 2 года назад
Great video, love the gen 1 content! Just a note on the install, Spicer recommends 20-25 ft/lbs not 33 which is factory. You’re basically over torquing the bolt by 25% or greater. That cover should be thicker, and spacing it off the housing will make force act over a slightly longer length hence the snapping. Also I would recommend people torque at 10-15 then jump to 20-25. It will help you set the gasket and reduce possible leaks. 🤙
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 года назад
We’ve had people do 20-25 and still have issues with oil seeping out. Not leaking but slowly soaks out the sides. That’s what happened to my last setup and max torque I used was 25. The problem with bolts snapping is with the torque wrench. At such low numbers is not always easy to tell when you got the click. Mine snapped because I kept going when I should have stopped
@73NF14Ret
@73NF14Ret Год назад
33ft lbs is not a low number…maybe for lug nuts it would be
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Год назад
Yep, but your typical torque wrench starts at 50 ft lbs. you need a 1/4 in - inch pounds torque wrench to torque under 50 ft lbs and most don’t have them. And even with the right torque wrench it’s still tough to feel the click sometimes. I’ve snapped at least 2 bolts myself with low torque specs and seen and heard many others do the same
@PivitoPivito

Great job man, great content and I love that you have a Gen1. Is there any reason you went with 75w-90? There has been a lot of back and forth debate about the correct oil for the rear on the forums. Long story short, it was confirmed by guys at Ford that 75w-140 is the actual “right” oil for the rear. Debate was because the supplemental for the Raptor says 75w-85 and that is wrong. Reason I am asking is I have a bad bearing and am replacing/ upgrading the dif-cover and axles(bad bearing turns into bad axle) while doing the work.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 года назад
Lots of commentary with the weight. Basically if your toe and plan on being in durations that will have more heat, then you need a heavier weight. But the heavier oil also Increases to load on the diff and impacts fuel economy. We did 75w110 on the last truck. Done 75w90 and have not seen too any issue. Really comes down the preference

@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 года назад
We talked about it in a previous video. The factory spec is 85w90. For best protection in cold weather and fuel economy. The heavier the weight, the more protection. It’s why tow rights use a heavier weight. BUT as we have learned from the banks videos, heavier weight also increase the load and reduce power loss. So you have to find the balance that’s right for you.

Throw away the bolts that come with it reuse the factory or get real grade 8 . Quality of the fasteners sucked

@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad before I saw your vid I did mine consulted the manufacturer and vendor because of others having the same problem with the bolts . Some actually don’t have issues it could be anything in the supply chain to packaging who knows .As soon as I saw the bolts and felt the weight I knew fake not even close .

What sucks it’s that it’s an american company putting this together. But they can’t make everything in the US, and it’s also the reason these covers are impossibly to find these days

Cancel your TRX and buy a Raptor Gen 3!!

Gen3 is not for us man. While I would love to put a Gen3 thru is paces, it has a ton more electronics so reliability is in question and Ford is watching this channel closely and we won’t have access to any warranty coverage if we show it on dirt and make any mods. That’s boring for the channel.

I hear you (and can’t blame you). I have a Gen 3 coming and you’ve had the best Gen 2 channel on RU-vid so I was hoping to live vicariously through you with the next generation. Haha
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 2 года назад
That was the original plan. But things change and Ford has made some odd decisions as of late. The whole bronco BS being a good example. Our focus now will be to showcase what’s mid travel kits can do, that applies to all trucks really, and the adventures that apply to everyone.

I’m definitely still going to follow y’all 👍🏻 but now I also gotta find someone going Gen 3 that’s as in depth as you. Ha

Question, Rear Diff Vent tube is blowing oil out of the top in the bed rail and is making a mess. Any idea y? It's not over filled. Thanks
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Год назад
Mine does the same. I need to see why and I was planning on putting a filter on it to reduce the mess at some point. Once I figure out the cause and way to reduce it, then I’ll post a video.

@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad I heard something about Amsoil foaming and possibly causing the problem.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Год назад
Mine did it before I switched to amsoil and I never had the issue with my gen2. I think the gen2 design for the breather hose may be the problem.

I have a gen 2 raptor and I’ll be using the AMS OIL for the rear diff 75w-90 🫡🫡hopefully that’s good enough

@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad yeah I was worried because a lot of people are using 75w140 but I don’t really off road the truck or tow with it … I live in California and the tem over here isn’t so bad . I think 75w90 is fine 💯💯💯

@KeepItDirtyOffRoad 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, it’s better than the factory spec, so you will keep the protection without adding any resistance so no impact to MPGs and still have extra protection for when you occasionally hit the trails.
