There are so many varying opinions on which engine oil to use. I found a very informative blog (link below) by an engineer that shows extensive testing results for engine oils and tons of great information on oil properties and what to look for to make your decision. In this video I show which oil I chose for both my 2016 F150 and 2016 Mustang GT coyote engines.

me too in my 2014 5.0 F150! I do add a can of Engine Restore at each change. 30k since i got it, has 155k now and does not use "a drop" of oil and it does not interfere with the VVT system like some say it will, that is only on engines that are really sensitive to oil viscosity changes and that's not the 5.0!

There’s a guy on RU-vid called Project Farm, he does a lot of really good tests on products. He did an oil shootout with all the top brand oils and had some really good results. I like the idea of OEM oil filters! 👍🏽. I personally use shell Rotella T-6 0-40 Diesel engine oil on every motor I have. Been using it for years and never let me down. It’s high in zinc and phosphorus which are the additives that reduce friction. I used to have an oil for this and an oil for that, but not anymore T-6 0W40 for everything 👌🏽👍🏽

That's in the blog as well. Definitely a very long blog, but worth a good look at. Glad I ran across it. Makes me feel good about the decision I made. But, there's a lot of great oils out there that do the job well.

Friction and wear are two different things. With more zinc you reduce wear but you increase friction, costing you horsepower

I have a 2013 F-150 5.0 4×4 Super Crew cab. I bought it this past summer with 174,000 miles on it. It now has 185,780 miles. Engine has the usual mechanical sounds that some guy's talk about, but has no negative effects on performance. I'm glad I ran into your video, because this subject has been on my mind for the past two oil changes on this 5.0 coyote engine. I'm definitely going to change the oil over to this Quaker 5w-30 synthetic this coming oil change. Thanks again 👍

there is two drains on that filter pan, it is a pain in the butt... always a mess... 5w-20 through 5w-50 is what ford calls for in the coyote engines depending which vehicle. that engineers blog is spot on, it is a bit lofty but good information and he is testing with proper equipment. in our truck the oil doesn't get hot at all until towing , then it get up to temp.. 5w-30 should help..

same oil as pennzoil plstimum, and yes its a solid product. They all are, there's been 600,000++ mile vehicles using every major brand oil, some over a million miles, yes gas engines. Motorcraft filters are made by Champion labs unless something has changed, and champion makes lots of oil filters for major name brands. Bosch filters are made by Filtech (also used to be factory honda oem filter), and mobil 1 are excellent also. Pick the right viscosity, change it on time with an off the shelf approved filters, and that's not half the battle --- that is 100% of the battle. In 40 yrs of being around engines (gas, diesel, two stroke outboards) and some up to 11,000rpm I have yet to see a wear difference in oil brands, not even down to a mic'd .0001" measurement. Initial engine build quality and the aforementioned changing oil & filters on time is everything.

The biggest problem is that people don’t follow the maintenance schedule. Folks like us, spending time with others thinking about this, are probably not the ones that will run too long between changes. Even if you don’t go full synthetic and just use the blend, Ford is saying that is good enough. At least for my 2019 coyote… running full synthetic with low micron filtration gives a little peace of mind if you’re unable to change it exactly when the light pops. If you’re anything like me, you can’t stand letting it go past the interval.

If you read the 540 Rat Blog, you will notice that the author ranked Amsoil 100% Synthetic Signature Series 0W-20 Motor Oil the top 20 weight oil that was specifically designed for your Ford vehicles. By the way, the author didn't rank the QS Ultimate Durability Full Synthetic the top 5W-30 oil, but it was the QS Full Synthetic that won the top honors in his opinion. According to the Safety Data Sheet, the 5W-30 QS Full Synthetic contains 70-90% distillates (derived from highly-refined petroleum oil).

Purchased a 2022 f 150 5.0 , I added a quart of oil at 2,000 miles . This kinda worried me, did I just buy a oil burner. I used 5w20 as per the oil cap. After 6,000 miles I had ford in Alabama change my oil , this of course was its first change. After leaving the dealer I saw the paperwork that stated 5w30 . I’m thinking a dealer put 5w30 as opposed to the cap stating 5w20 . As time went on I checked the oil because I knew it used a quart at the first 2,000 miles . Well no more consumption at this time. I was in South Dakota when it was time for another change at 12,000 so I went to ford again and they did my second change. That ford dealer also installed 5w30 all I know is I haven’t had any consumption since 2,000 mile mark . Do you go by the cap or 5w30 , just in case I do my own in the future.

Rotella t6 5w40. It's all in the add pack. Not the oil. 2011 gt no tick tick tock. Common sense would tell you. Common problems the rod bearings. If they were roller much would not matter on oil. But they are a highly friction peice. A place in a engine that requires film strength from the thickness of oil. Research thin oils do free up hp. But you will be rebuilding sooner. 5w 40 and 5w50 are best for 5.0. Add packs make the difference. Rotella oil vs any other voa. Research

I have a 2014 f150 with gen 1 coyote engine and I bought it with 110k well maintained miles. It came from a gas co and the changed oil every 3k miles using reg oil ( not sure what brand). It was due for a change when I bought it. I started using Mobil 1 extended performance high mileage with a motorcraft filter and I’ve changed it three times at 5k miles intervals. @chrisrossman9566 3 года назад
@@evictioncarpentry2628 5w30 will provide better wear protection on the upper cylinder walls and rings where the temperature is extremely high. 5w20 will probably get better fuel economy early on in life, but will fall behind later in life because the rings and cylinder walls are worn. They both flow the same when cold
@evictioncarpentry2628

@chrisrossman9566
@chrisrossman9566 3 года назад
@@evictioncarpentry2628 Oil clearance hasn't changed, its how well engines are cooled these days is why they can get by with a lighter grade of oil. Oil temperatures in modern engines with aluminum blocks and heads don't see the heat as engines from 50 years ago ran hot, all cast iron. They needed the extra protection in a 10w30 or 10w40. 5w20, 5w30, 5w40, 5w50 all flow the same at -30 degrees so the engine will not care one bit on the upper number until it gets warm. Then you are just maybe loosing a little MPG. There is always a trade off.
@williammileson9398
@williammileson9398 Месяц назад
Don't be fooled by the myth that expensive oils are better just because they have a special name and are a famous brand, that's just bullshit because people are ignorant. It is completely unimportant what brand the oil is. The important thing is that the oil meets the set requirements and not which brand. What you should look at is the API, ILSAC, ACEA classification of the oil. If the oil has classification ACEA A5 or ILSAC GF-4 or API SN/SP, the oil meets all the highest requirements from the car manufacturer, regardless of the brand of the oil. Then there is the viscosity of the oil... you cannot say generally which viscosity is best, it depends on where in the world you live. If you live in Alaska, you should drive on 0W-20, if you live in Texas, Florida, California, you should drive on 5W-40... or 10W-50, depending on the season. If you live in the middle part, you should use 5W-30. There is also a difference if the car is used for racing or if it is a daily use. Whether your car is tuned or cammed or not is of no importance as long as the oil meets the highest requirements.

@@BackyardBMX73 What a lot of people analyze about oils is their additive measurements from an oil analysis, but that only describes the additive package and not the base oil which is the 98% of the actual motor oil and what the quality you pay for comes from. That being said... Companies like Exxonmobil and Pennzoil(shell) are the ones that actually manufacture the best best oils on a global scale and sell them to people like Valvoline etc. A lot of the time an oil is jammed with additives is bc the base oil is cheap and doesnt do its intended job well. Most oils today are the same (same type of base oil) or similar... and therefore little difference The FULLY SYNTHETIC category is nearly all highly refined conventional Group III oils that display very similar characteristics and provide very similar level of protection. They are ALL not the best but also not bad. The oil change interval is far more important than brand selection. If it is a generic brand like NAPA or KIRKLAND or Walmart's house brand- SUPERTECH or so just change it 500 miles earlier and you are golden. If it's a big name you can go 500-600 miles longer than usual but that's it. 3,000-5,000 miles is the preferred interval with ALL of these oils. Reply
