Joe SC ever dealt with a Ford five hundred. It stalls when I first turn it on. It will stall 5 or 6 times in the driveway but after it warms up, it doesn't do it anymore. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
This is my 1st go at something mechanical & how lucky am I to find you so quickly! Everything you explained is what's going on with my ford! It actually made sense to me who has no prev mech experience.. I'm just hoping to wing it with logic & reasoning before I say have at it mechanic magician! Thanks Ford tipper dude!
Great Videos...Ive been at this for 35 years or so and have had a few of those Mech. 101 things land in my lap. Cant stress enough to never forget the Basics...Thanks for the Videos.. They are very informative for all levels ...Good luck on your new venture!!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. This was the exact cause of my vehicle hesitation. The air box had broken clips on the MAF side allowing air to be sucked in creating the turbulence. Clamping this area down now has the engine running smooth at ideal and NO HESITATION ANYMORE on takeoff such as a red light. Thanks again. Great information...
This worked fantastically. My hesitation was caused from a very small seating problem when the air filter was changed properly. Just reseated it and the hesitation vanished. Cheapest fix I've ever done! Thank you.
I must say that my hat is off to this guy. There are a lot of mechanics on RU-vid but most of them are not clear and educated like this guy. So, BIG THANKS, I learned a lot. Subscribed for more.
I am a professional mechanic working at a local garage and I greatly appreciate your video you help this old man keep up with all the new stuff thank you
I have been trying to figure out why my truck was hesitating and saw this video and exactly what you described was wrong with my truck. Someone (either oil change guys or emissions check guys) did not reinstall the clips and the wiring harness cap was not correctly installed. Fixed my problem and saved me a lot of time and dollars. THANKS!
Thank you! Just today, I found a cheap crap air filter like that one, except this one did not have the screen and it actually collapsed and fell down in the box which left the lid so lose that the clips fell down. I replaced it with a good filter and cleaned the MAFS with CRC. This was on a 2.3 and now first gear works like you would expert. Thanks for everything that you do to help everyone.
Great video, very informative, as always. Just want to share something, this happened to my truck after an air filter change, went to neighborhood Auto Zone, guess they don't carry Fram anymore, so I bought what they had in a blue box, can't remember the brand, truck started hesitating to start right away, took me a couple of days to figure it out, got old Fram filter out of the trash, shook it real good and put it back on, PROBLEM SOLVED!! Fram or Motorcraft only from now on.
I have found over many years of professionally wrenching on cars, that these style of air boxes with the tabs on one side and retainer clips on the other side, a light coating of silicone on the air filter seal helps in putting things together easier ( be careful not to overdue it as too much if a good thing could he bad for the MAF). I am a GM owner and mechanic for almost 40 years and enjoy your videos as they are spot on for cause and effect of problems as well as repairs. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Don't use silicone on the intake system of your computer controlled vehicle. Even a small amount can create havoc with the o2 sensors and the catalytic converters. That pennies worth of silicone can cost you thousands in replacement of your exhaust system parts.
Just had this problem on my Escape V6 (Same car), fixed it by changing 2 faulty ignition coils and all the 6 spark plugs, on top of that they also cleaned the MAF sensor and flushed out the air intake system. Now the car runs very well.
Thank you so much for expressing your knowledge! Very clear detailed videos. I'm used to old school mechanics, technology has come so far.... you've saved me thousands helping me work on my trucks myself. Thank you!!!
OMG this video was a life saver. Saved my daughter in laws and my ford expedtions. Hers would start then shut down. Mine had a surg at take off. Ok I took my mass flow sencer off mine and put it on hers the truck started and ran but then had the surge. So after watching this video I looked that both of them closer. Lol hers had a spider in it and mine had one of the prongs smashed in it. So took spider out and straightened mine out and both are running perfect. Just to show everything happens for a reason...Thanks again...
4:00-5:02 Was really helpful in understanding how it might just be an issue as simple as a loose airbox cover. I paused and checked the car.. sure enough, the hose had come loose from the airbox. Thank you!
Great tip. It's too easy to think you have a major problem, when it's a dirty mass airflow sensor, or the other simple things he pointed out in the video. As insurance, since you're already under the hood, check to be sure all the wires involved look good and that the sockets and pins on the connector to the throttle body are clean, and the connector is properly connected to the throttle body and locked in place.
You a savior ! Haven’t ckecked all yet bu I think your spot on ! Just had to replace the intake …. Coil packs all new motor raft plugs …. Cleaning along the way ! Ram fabulous at first ! Decided to hunt down my hvac system found burnt wires on blower motor ! Replaced it with new harness and then ! Missfire dead pig!!!
Thanks for the video. Too bad most mechanics dont make time to check thoroughly instead they do unnecessary before possibly fixing the problem to bill you a hell of alot more.
That was it. Hesitation went away. I had removed the intake air manifold to change the spark plugs and apparently did not completely plug a censor back in all the way. Thank you so much.
My car was hesitating during acceleration. No check engine light. First they thought it was a vacuum leak so the "fixed" that but it was still hesitating. Dropped it off at the mechanic again today. It was a bad coil. Running great now!
Excellent as usual. I got replaced mine oxygen sensors all 04 ea as 02 of them giving alarms, fuel filter, engine mounting as the explorer is 2008 model, EGR valve as it was giving alarm, but still engine rough at idle. Need to check air path as you suggested. Will get back to you.
This may be an older video but this made me fix my gas pedal flat spot . I did some valve repairs a few months ago and when putting my air filter housing on my 2008 Ford van didn't know that the map sensor sealing plug was pulled out allowing extra air into the air housing causing the engine to have a flat spot on acceleration. Reinserted the plug and it fixed it , runs great again.
Good video. I’m having hesitation issues on a 99 work van with the 5.4 but only during the driving rain. All other times it runs fine...Seems like an air flow issue to me, I’ll take a close look at the intake components as described in video. Thx.
That's the only thing I need to check. My truck idles weird and sometimes dies when I go forward or backwards. Turns off and low oil warning light shows. Thanks for all the help.
I have a potential job later this week on a 2003 Ford Mustang GT, the owner says he is having similar issues with low power and acceleration. I hope the fix can be simple as this one. The owner told me the Mustang sat up for a long while, but started being drove last November and the car started acting up two weeks ago. I was first thinking of the fuel filter and asked him when the last time the filter was changed and he told me he didn’t know.
I just encountered a Lincoln that had been to a Jiffy oil change - and the tabs of the air cleaner were not in their slots, caused the problem you described
I have a 92 ford f250 custom 5.0 5speed duel tanks it cranks and run fine for a little while and then it starts popping loses acceleration and dies won't crank back wait awhile and cranks back may run an hour or maybe 10 mins it does it driving down the road but it will set an run for 3 hours in the driveway I don't understand can you help me please I need this truck for work
Been getting my '94 Ranger back on the road and I have to say you're the best for thorough, sound, logical tips and procedures. Thanks very much for the time you spend helping us all out. I particularly like the fact that you not only know your stuff when it comes to vehicles, but you speak intelligently. If you're going to trust someone's work, they have to sound like they know what they're talking about and you do. PS - At 1:00 into this video, you say "jive" to express a correlation between two things. The word is actually "jibe". You're one of those rare "perfectionist" mechanics so I just wanted to give you the heads up :) Thanks again and keep up the good work!
Was exactly the problem on my 2015 Ford Edge Sport 2.7L Twin Turbo. Had a hesitation on WOT after getting some AC work done at the stealership, couldn't figure it out. Tried a Throttle body relearn, nothing. Saw this video, checked the engine bay, found the problem. MAF Plug was unplugged. Plugged it back in, done. CEL went away, acceleration and throttle response went through the roof. Had no idea the MAF would affect just the throttle response from a dead stop. WOT under rolling conditions was fine.
My 09 Focus i had from the factory one of the 3 cips was off. i took it in about 4 times complaining about excessive engine noise at 3k RPM and occasional rough idle at cold statup. Then i found the clip and fixed it, and that solved the issues. But that motor had a bad lifter, that got stuck open one day after sitting for a week, sounded like a rod nock when it started. always had a tick at cold startup but ford said they can't figure out which one it is and the warranty won't let them open it up without knowing which One it was..
Perfect example of why I have never trusted those quick lube type of places and not to mention the air getting through that gap was unfiltered with all of the dust etc.
AGREED "don't buy cheap air filter".....reason # 4250 not to get Fram anything...I had glue from the air filter come apart on my 02' and a chunk of filter paper land on the MAF sensor...shut it down like switch. Nicely explained
I hate to be "THAT GUY" but......ford's motorcraft and fomoco brands are NOT actually manufactured by Ford. FRAM actually used to be owned by FORD lol they sold their shares in the company and championed their "own brand" ( Motorcraft ) -everyone's products that's meets their specifications- motorcraft is basically a front company for wix, fram,Purolator etc etc. If you want something that not the same shit in a different pile.... get a k&n or equivalent. Research motorcraft on wiki.
Nice video very helpful, any tips you may have on a ford escape 2011 issue is while Driving car suddenly looses power, service engine light comes on. You can turn the car off and it will start fine. But when the car looses power you can't accelatrate but you can hear the motor trying to like catch up it is strange and very dangerous, almost got rear ended today, any tips will be apprecitated. Thanks in advance.
Great video. I took my F150 into Hibdon Tires yesterday for a couple tires and I thought, what the hell, I'll get them to change my oil as well. When I picked it up, I noticed my check engine light was on, my tow haul was activated and my AC was turned down and blowing at top speed. When I took off, I felt the hesitation, just like you explain it. I went out and checked my truck soon after seeing this video and sure enough those A HOLES forgot to set my air filter cover back on right and tight. Thanks.
Thanks for the video so this is what happens to my Ford pickup. When I drive through a water puddle my air flow sensor gets wet n moisture gets into it.
I have a 95 Ford F-150 and it hesitates badly, I’ve taken it to the mechanic shop and every time they just put in a new sensor and say that’s what’s wrong but after a little while it starts hesitating again… I’m gonna try to see if this works for it, Thanks for the advice!
Thank you so much my big brother was watching this now his ford expedition reverse works great now, it was shuddering before, now he can drive faster then before
My youngest daughter just recently moved to NC and her 2006 Ford Explorer is experiencing this same hesitation and unable to go past 40 mph. I live in Md. and wer'e planning on going down there in a couple of weeks. Fortunately she has one of my vehicles for the time being. When I get down there I hope this is the issue and I can implement this solution. Im not sure, however if an '06 has the same or similar air flow system. I'll find out soon enough!
great tip. i ran into this looking for Ign timing help. maybe you can help. 96 Gt 4.6 mustang runs smooth and peppy but with poor gas mileage. best ever highway was 20mph even. with Torque App i realized my timing never goes above 28 deg. should hit a number in the 40s and that will change mileage. also it shifts to firm while normal driving and that tells me Eng load to throttle is out of sync. Im 70 but not helpless with this stuff but if i was talking to another old guy like me Id say the Vacuum advance is disconnected but of course it doesn't have one so im trying to track down what has taken its place on the my cool /mustang. Thanks for your time. Ps. no codes. i cleaned the Air flow, new exh. , cold air intake, plugs and 0 change.
I wish you were fixing my 2013 Ford Fusion, 3 days after I got it I had to have a rebuilt motor put in and a new torque converter and several other things and I just got it back after 5 weeks and the check engine light came back on 😓 one being turbo under boost
That is exactly what's going on with my car sometimes I'll be at a stop and I would push on my pedal and it would just bog out and then the light would come on and then I would just cut my car off for a while maybe like a day and everything will be running perfect again just for a little while but I'd be running perfectly again and it would do this exact same thing thanks for this video
I've got an 09 F-150 w/ a 4.6 3 valve. I've had mild hesitation for during hard acceleration for a while now, but never a check engine light. Can the MAF sensor give you problems without causing a CEL?
First of all thank you! I have a 2005 Crown Vic Police Interceptor w/ p2106 code and wrench light (goes on when at 50mph) driving me bananas! It all started when my rear differential went while driving on the highway...the gears wouldn't go forward or backwards. Long story short brought it to the shop and changed the differential and still p2106. Then came back and changed the throttle body and air filter. Still no change. It's been 2 weeks, the mechanic looked at the wiring, changed the EGR, Intake Manifold(the coolant began to smoke prior), swapped transmissions (under warrantee), changed coils, spark plugs, swapped PCMs, changed the accelerator pedal/sensor, and checked the differential for speed sensors. NO CHANGE. He wants me to bring it to the shop to try and put a transmission speed sensor and then quote "he's done." I've done the relearn processes in your videos, checked for any air leaks from throttle tubes to air box and mass air flow sensor. I don't know what to do anymore. Any advice would help. Even if you're around the NY/NJ/Conn tri- state area I'll stop by you!
+shrigawiga Is the air filter box latched into the lower box correctly? Has the MAF been cleaned? They need to monitor the maf on a graph while driving at that speed to check for any drop outs.
Hey buddy what motor oil do you recommend for my 2006 fordf150 it runs great just want to give motor more protection it has the 4.6 l with 170.000 miles on it
I replace my injector now when I get past 40 it loose power my check engine light flashes but it dont set and the power pick back up I need help what is it
When I worked for Ford I had a Ranger come in with a crank, no start. I found a cheap air filter had sagged and a bee 🐝 got in (don’t know if it flew in alive or was sucked in dead). It got hung up on the hot wire of the MAF sensor. I removed it. Cleaned the wire. Engine started up strong.
Aloha Brother love the channel had to subscribe.. so in this video every thing u said is exactly what my 95 cobra is doing .. i plug my scanner in and it tells me my secondary air injector... could the secondary air injector be the same symptoms?... what do u recommend me starting with?.....Mahalo
I have a 1989 bronco 2 that sputters or skips intermittently. But I hit a pot hole and the alternator quit working. So after replacing it the sputtering is worse and quite frequent. I had to remove the air filter box and the clamps were messed up so I just put the hose from the air box to the intake on without any clamps. I was originally thinking fuel filter or ignition coil but now you have me thinking about air flow. What do you think?
hello, would this cause hesitation during acceleration on my 95 Ford F150? Engine light off..Engine idles fine, just takes forever taking off..??throttle body clean..egr seemed to be clean..not much carbon..any info would be appreciated..thanks and great video!
It does it on my 03 ford escape xlt 2wd 6 cyl. Plus it starts to over heat, i put it on n then gauge goes down. Cant use ac because it will over heat. Then ill put it on n and gauge goes down. I put a new thermostat, water pump basket, & a radiator. What else can i do?
2005 ford ranger 2.3 ok i am having difficulty unclipping the maf sensor is the a trick to it and would dirty fuel injectors have anything to do with hesitation it got a little better when i replace the plugs and cables
Hey i have a 05 mustang gt that has intermittent hesitation issues. Its a manual and after a good 20 min drive the feels more sluggish and the idle it seems sorta drops drops when i try to engage the clutch. Ive ckeaned the maf and throttle body and it sorta help. But eventually it runs good sometimes not always
I have a 05 Ford Mustang Gt and I replaced the fuel pump, spark plugs, fuel filter,o2 sensors, oil change, all ignition coils and air filter it has a rough idle and it has hesitation only in low RpM’s can this be it?
I got a 13 f150 5.0 had 2 new mass airflow sensors but still had lean code bank 1 and missing on 5 6 7 and 8 new coils and plugs idk where to look next love my truck but cant afford for a stud like your self to look at it but idles fine but under hard acceleration dies completely but light throttle will slowly accelerate under light acceleration
hi how are you love the videos i had one question. have you had any 2005-2008 f150 w4.6 sohc have issues where the truck dies when i come to a stop or fluctuates in rpm when on the road accelerating?
I have a 1995 E150 van 4.9L and my question is, since my sensors are mounted to the firewall & engine / NOT on the air box, will my air box hoses disconnected from the throttle body still make my engine hesitate even though it’s not moving? I’ve got it up on jacks now in drive & at 35 mph it acts like it’s running out of gas.
hi Mr fordthec.I have a question bro. About my e350 econoline runs good till 40 mph after that star jerking or checking when you go above 50 ,60 ,65, some times 70 mph. any ideas bro.thanks
Thinking to by an older 2009 Fusion. Love the look and size and drive, etc. But the 6cyl engine is slow/ sluggish off the start. I am so surprised by that that, for such a big and strong V6. Is there also other ways to speed it up and make it more lively, or is that just what is to expect? That's my only doubt holding me back. Thanks.
Hello I have an 07 mercury mountaineer it takes off fine but when I'm going between 40 and 50 mph it hesitates but no check engine light comes on I took it to a friend of mine but he said if there's no light he can't fix it. Do you have any idea what could be the problem? I would really appreciate if you answer to me. thank you.
Maybe this will help me, my 2012 Ford Fiesta has been having problems lately. The last couple of times I used it, the car won't accelerate from 'stop'.
I have a 2015 ford ranger that has been serviced at dealer since day 1 I just drove the 2019 ford ranger and it has not got lag and acceleration is way better than mine Would you know what they have changed ?
I enjoy your video I have a 2003 grand Marquis. 98,432 miles. In overdrive, the car has a hesitation and hiccups. Acts like it starving for fuel. I replace the fuel filter. Car runs great in all gears . But it does not like overdrive. Any ideas. Thank you
I want to say thanks for the spoken part more than the vid. You mentioned about the squish on the filter being off allowing air to leak past. I've replaced the m.a.s., egr, aic and checked for vac leaks and not much different. Then I noticed some warpage on one side of the lower airbox. Guess I'll go to my favorite yard and try replacing that.
I have a 2009 f150 4wd. I have problems with the a/c shutting down when it is on max or auto. I have changed out the resistor, the relay and the blending door actuator. It worked fine but started shutting down again anytime the external temperature reads 91 or higher. Any idea of what's the problem.
hey I got a 1986 ford f150 5.0L. when I drive and stop at a red light then go when it goes green, my engine hesitates and putters out kinda. what do you think that would be?
Just had new "Jasper" engine installed in my 04 F150 (5.4 3v) and have had it back in shop over 8 times because of engine losing power during acceleration... It starts out like a hot rod then when it shifts to 2nd it falls flat on its face and starts surging... replaced, TPS, Tbdy motor, Mass air sensor... ALL O2 sensors, all 4 catalytic converters, manifold, fuel rail pressure sensor, crankshaft sensor .... old motor had 253,000 and NEVER fell down like this one... The dealership even replaced the Power packs with genuine Ford one's...... I just last night bought brand new gel battery 775 cca... no improvement.... I thought maybe the foot pedal position sensor or even ECM but wanted to ask you first for your thoughts..... again, in short... starts off but then falls flat to almost shutting down to idle... until I keep stomping on pedel and get up to about 75-85 then and only then does it maintain power but with HIGH fuel consumption PLEASE .. YOUR THOUGHTS
I had a 1990 ranger that wouldnt idle. Turned out the air tube from the filter box was eaten away for about 6x2. No wonder it wouldnt run Put on a new one and away she went
