Ford Ranger disc brake conversion Part 1

I finally got all the parts in...almost. So it’s time to bite into the disc brake conversion on this thing. The 1985 Ford Ranger (and just about every other small to mid sized RWD Ford) uses a 7.5” rear axle, the cheap conversion from drum to discs utilizes 94-04 Mustang V-6 or GT parts. These parts are plentiful in junk yards but also readily available in parts stores for replacements. You need mounting brackets, caliper brackets, calipers, rotors, pads, brake hoses, and all the associated bolts and nuts. It is pretty straight forward and can be done with basic hand tools. A really easy upgrade for older Fords.

So, I swapped in an 8.8 inch with rear disc(for a 5.0 swap) then changed out the master cylinder to accommodate four wheel disc brakes. The new master cylinder was a direct bolt on 1996 Ford Explorer for my 92 Ford Ranger.

I just did my conversion and there are many thing here that I could simplify for you guys and what has been terribly left out and unsafe in his application. Sorry but thats the deal. E brake cables must be modified slightly as well and the main bracket must be bevel ground on the inside so as not to interfere with the weld on the axle flange. Start by removing axles first off, then brake line off the back of backing and then both e brake cables. Then just undo the 4 bolts of the backing plate to the flange on axle and it all comes out as 1. Perfect time to change diff oil and replace axle seals and possible bearings as well. The disk brake pads must have all 4 clips attached to prevent premature wear on the brake pad to the caliper. Unbolt the 2 piece caliper and install brake pads then reassemble and bolt the entire caliper on the rotor. Put two lugs nuts on the rotor and snug the rotor to the axle then bolt up caliper to the mount. You will see that the caliper will most likely not be centered. You have to shim with washers to center them. The rotors are also slightly larger hole that fits onto the axle so a tube or pipe shim needs to be cut out to tightly center the rotor on the axle. I am working at this right now. Havent figured this out and dont entirely know if this is necessary if lug bolts are tightened maybe more than specs.

Since people are asking questions, I have done this swap, and I did use TheRangerStation in my research. Any Ford Bronco II, Ford Ranger, or Ford Aerostar can do this swap if you have a 7.5" or 8.8" rear axle. A Ranger with an FX4 package *cannot* do this swap, as the rear axles, for the FX4 package, are 31-spline axles, while a 7.5/8.8 axle is a 28-spline axle, the same as a 94-04 Mustang GT or V6. The only parts you have to grab from a junkyard are the anchor plates, which bolt in place to the axle flange on the axle tube (these take the place of the drum brake backing plates). The difference is, you have to cut out a section of the plate so you can slip it on the other side of the flange when you install it -- the drum brake backing plate is installed on the outer side of the axle flange, the anchor plate is bolted on the inner side of the axle flange. Other than that, you only need the Mustang brake parts to do this upgrade, technically. The only thing you may have to do is get larger diameter brake lines, so you don't blow out a caliper piston on the rear of the truck. The larger diameter lines, or a brake master cylinder with a proportioning valve, lessens the brake pressure so that the brakes function, but don't over-pressurize the line. It may also be worth it to convert your two-line Ranger braking system to a four-line braking system (one line to each wheel), to be able to properly balance the braking pressure to each wheel -- in which case, some fabrication for both front and rear brake systems may be necessary. But strictly-speaking, this is a bolt-on braking upgrade on 83-2001 Rangers, sans FX4 packages, as well as the Bronco II and Aersostars.
@jacoponono8179
@jacoponono8179 2 года назад
why are you saying this is only an upgrade for 83-2001? Why not 83-2009? In 2010 the ranger had disc brakes from the factory due to regulatory requirement changes.
@isaiahwelch8066
@isaiahwelch8066 2 года назад
@@jacoponono8179 : From 2002 to 2010, I believe that era of Rangers also had 31-spline axles. However, in 2010, with that regulatory requirement, it would make this swap much easier. Had I known about the 2010 and 2011 Rangers, I would have looked for one of those trucks, rather than an 8.8 from a 4.0 Ranger.

@isaiahwelch8066
@isaiahwelch8066 2 года назад
Actually, it will. In my conversion, I used a Ford 8.8 axle from a 4.0 Ranger and it bolted on without fitment issues. The only issue I have is that the Ranger brake lines may be too small in diameter, or that I need a proportioning valve, as I keep blowing out the right rear caliper.
@isaiahwelch8066
@isaiahwelch8066 2 года назад
@@Bigtony1818 : Your axle is an 8.8" axle, just like the axles found on some Rangers (4.0) and the 94-04 Mustang. I know this because your axle tag says "8.8," in reference to the Ford 8.8 axle. Mustang parts from the 94-04 should bolt right up, but double check the diameter brake line you have, so that you can fit it to the Mustang calipers. The other thing is, checking into whether you have a proportioning valve in your master cylinder, or whether you would have to add one in, since you don't want to blow out the rear calipers from applying too much hydraulic pressure (don't ask me how I know).
@tonyrandazzoe8210
@tonyrandazzoe8210 3 года назад
Wow! I have an 88 Aerostar - I wonder if this conversion can fit that too ? Where did you get the kit ? Or do you just get a plate bracket from a 94 mustang ? Caliper too ? What application ?
@isaiahwelch8066
@isaiahwelch8066 2 года назад
You should be able to do this swap, since you would either have the 3.0 or 4.0 engine, same as the Ranger. The Ranger, up to the FX4 package, used 28-spline axles in all trucks, including the 8.8 axle in a Ranger with a 4.0. The FX4 axles don't work because they are a larger diameter 31-spline axles. The "kit" is basically the parts for the rear brakes for a 94-04 Mustang GT or V6. The Cobra brakes probably would not work, since they have larger rotors (If you have 15" wheels, it's possible to upgrade to a 16" early 1990s F-150 or full-size Bronco wheel to fit the parts for a Cobra upgrade). The only part you'll need to get from a junkyard is the anchor plate, which is the plate that serves the best same purpose as a drum brake backing plate, by being bolted to the axle housing. Everything else you could pull at a junkyard and use for core charges for replacement parts.
