I did 4 cyl to 302 V8 30 years ago for $5000. With factory air. 1983 Ranger. Didn't cut heater box, used stock 4 cyl drive staft and shifter. It's AOD.😊
Really cool build Bro. But with all due respect, I‘ve never seen any radiator that has the inlet and outlet on top of the radiator ! Makes me wonder about how efficient it will work. I’d love to see a Ranger tubbed out with 14x32 meats under it ! Nice job, stay safe. 🏁🇺🇸
I wish my 03 had a 302.Has 190K on the 4.0 did all the maintenance..hoping to get 300K but if she blows Ill have my friend help me put a 302 in her!!! Time for a burn out video bro!!! haha :)
@@account4info I just did the tensioners at 150k before the death rattle got bad so I'm at 190k and hoping for 100k more lol.Gunna switch too diesel oil.
@@577buttfan The bottom end is good for 400k miles or so. With the updated tensioners you should get to 300k miles. A coyote 5.0 would fit your engine bay and the same swap info for the 99-04 mustang guys would apply.
How’d it go? Any helpful suggestions I’d appreciate. What motor mounts did you use radiator, as you might be able to tell, this is my first 302 swap. I’ve done Manx dune buggies and sand rails and motorcycles. So I’m familiar just wanting no surprises! Lol
@@beejnicodemus1906 well i used a radiator out of the same 1996 truck but mine was all manual even down to the hubs which made it easier to switch as less wiring. But had the drive shafts cut down and rebalanced.
Is the wiring for the fuel injection system completely separate from the wiring of the rest of the truck? What do you have to rewire when you ditch the fuel injection for a carbureted V8?
So the harness could be split and remove the fuel injection part from the body part. But would take a lot of time and work. You could just leave all the wiring in there and use only the wires needed like coil distributor etc. I wanted to simplify it and make it as easy as possible. That’s why I re wired the whole truck. Hope this makes sense to you. Thanks for watching
Is the C4 the original tranny? I have an 86 Ranger with a 2.9L V6 and would like to stay with the 2.9 but go with a carb my only problem is finding a distributor with points that will fit the 2.9L. The available parts for this motor are limited. Also I am going to change the rear-end and go with 4.10 gears because of the overdrive tranny and local car shows only that should work out good. If I could get it from the 140Hp up to around 200Hp would be great. any info would be greatly appreciated THANKS!!
Hi this is not the original Tranny. The C4 came in tons of older cars with 289’s 302’s. Your aod were always problematic. Ok to switch your 2.9 to carb is gonna be more work than it’s worth. But not saying you can’t do it. As far as points distributor I know the 2.8 shared parts with the 2.9. Or maybe even change your distributor to a after market set up? What would you run for a intake manifold? Also your aod needs the computer to work. In all honesty your cheapest and easiest and simple route would be a stock 289/302 and C4 or a AOD with stock exhaust manifolds like me and even a 2 barrel carb be like 200hp all day and very reliable and piece of cake to work on. Just my thought. But I like to do thinks different at times. So if you want to put the time and research and money sticking with the 2.9 go for it. Good luck. Any other questions dont hesitate to ask. Thanks for watching.
Cool. I used all the brackets and accessories from the 1995 mustang GT I took the engine out of. I’m just finishing up the Mustang II front suspension on my ranger now. I’ll be putting up a new video of that soon. Good luck and have fun.
@@account4info I’m actually just changing over from the T5 back to a built C4. I’m looking at headers now. Cause I do hate these manifolds. If I find one that works I’ll share the brand and part number. 👍🏼
I'm doing lowering beams up front. Truck will sit level with the rear. I have a 88 with manual brakes. After researching, you can have a nice brake upgrade. You need to use 89-97 beams, 95-97 spindles. Now you can have dual piston calipers. Someone on Facebook makes a bracket so you can use sport trac rotors (12 or 13 inch). Look up sport track brake upgrades 1st gen Ranger
Chris Dillon I got a 1987 with a 302 in it already I wanted to upgrade the drums to disk do you happen to know what rear end would bolt up with no fabricating?
I’m going to start my 92 this winter, dad permitting, but I’m sticking to efi. What engine mounts did you use? I’m planning on using v8 explorer mounts because the explorers and rangers have similar widths and some forums say it’s drop in. Also, what benefits did you gain from using that trac bar kit did you find? I have a feeling I’m going to have some serious axle wrap. Thanks.
F1shittyGarage awesome good luck. Use either foxbody convertible mounts or SN95 mounts but have to reverse them left to right. Haven’t tried explorer mounts. So you are gonna need some sort of traction bars. Mine is 5 speed now and forget it grabbing 2nd the truck hops violently without them. So I’m gonna be installing them again very soon. Hit me up with any more questions. Thanks for watching. Good luck
@@1953fords so your truck shakes pretty hard in 2nd gear?mine does on 1st gear.couldnt figure out y.mines efi though.doesn t spin tires much thinking it needs to be tuned since I deleted alot of OEM parts.thinking ecm is trying to control thinks that aren't there anymore.
Also not sure if you know the explorer axle is like 1.5 inches wider than the ranger axle. If I had the explorer axle in mine with the axle flipped the rear tires and rims would hit the bed quarter panels. My rear tires are 15x10 weld draglites with 6.5 inch back space with 275/50 tire. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching
You can tap into the factory harness however you like. Yours was fuel injected and computer controlled. I decided to re-wire mine so simplify it for me. All depends on what you want to do.
How does the caltrac setup work on your truck?also does that caltrac setup work on lowered and none lowered rangers do u know by any chance?mine has the 4 " flip kit in the rear that's y I asked.
Yes these are set up to run with the flip kit. I did use these without the flip kit. But they work properly when it’s flipped. Very happy with how they perform.
hey man cool. I have a 2003 Ford ranger 8.8 in it. The welds are 15x10 7.5” BS. Tires are nitto 555 275/50 drag radial. I have about 1/2 inch clearance to the leafs. Never rubbed. Also they clear the bed after I rolled the lip. No rubbing yet.
It wouldn’t be to bad getting it in. The time would be all the wiring in your newer truck. The V8 would move your truck around easier but probably use the same amount of fuel honestly.
@@1953fords Thanks for replying dude! That's exactly the point. Less strain on a big engine means equivalent cruising MPG with an extra 1500 pounds of headroom. I tow a painting trailer and was going to do a reman long block 4.0 but for the cost, I could do better with my money.
Truck isn’t suiting my needs. I built it like I would have 20 years ago. So it’s actually listed for sale again 5 speed is done. Fun truck. I’m selling it now for $6500
Dylan Clere what I mean by that is it’s how I would have built it when I was younger and didn’t mind driving a “hot rod”. Now with a family I really need a normal truck one I don’t have to shut the engine off at a drive thru so they can hear me 🤣 or I can have a conversation with the wife while driving. If that makes any sense.
@@1953fords if I weren't tied up in 3 different projects right now I'd definitely love to own it lmao, building a 5.0 swap now in a 99 4x4 5 speed. Gathering up parts for now. Got the majority of it, just need the transmission and a few other things for the top end. Nice truck!
@@donnysouthwell9616 yes only engine mounts really. Tranny mount could use original depending on your transmission. Cross member is moved to different position. Can buy custom engine mounts or do what I did. SN95 mustang GT engine mounts. Reversed side to side. 👍🏼 exhaust is the hard part. Go with 2001 Ford Explorer exhaust manifolds like I did. Or mess with headers that never fit right. I honestly HATE the manifolds. Sucks for plug wires and one spark plug #3. To install/remove. My future plan is either putting my ford Barra engine in it or I’m doing a 351w and gonna make some headers. Also swap to Mustang II front suspension
@@account4info that actually is one of my next plans as well. I did the swap on my 53 mainline. I’ve seen videos of people doing it but lifting the front. I want to keep mine low.
I have a 1992 ford ranger I'm wanting to do a v8 swap with. It currently has the fuel injection 2.3 in it. Do you have any idea what I need to get to do this project
First you need to set goals. What are you gonna do with the truck? Use it normal with just a V8? You want to race it? You want to build it for street strip? Easiest to find a donor vehicle. Do you want to keep it fuel injected? Or switch to carb? Auto or manual? A lot of different thinks to consider
I'm wanting to drive the truck. Make it into a sleeper per say. I would like to stay with the fuel injection for ease of starting because I don't know much about carburetors not that I wouldn't be swade to put a carburetor on it. I know a 8.8 rear end is the common swap for the rear end and a c-4 trans is the common transmission to use. My truck is a automatic so I would like to keep it and automatic. My thing is the wiring. I'm pretty much fluent if I have a wiring diagram to go off of but I'm not able to find anything on the web. I also haven't been able to find anyone who will give me any direction to do such things. I know that I will ha e to change the motor mounts and add a oil filter relocation device. Radiator is a given it will ha e to be swapped because the factory 4 cylinder radiator isnt enough for a v-8. So any help would be great from what I know.
@@martypeavler6172 your on the right track. If you go back thru my videos I go over a lot of info and parts. I wanted it simple that’s why I went carb. Hit the gas pedal once and click the key starts instantly all the time. Any 8.8 out of a say 1993 and up ranger will work. At the junk yard look at the door tag for axle code. You can find the gear you want and limited slip. You could also use a explorer rear but they are 1.5-2 inches wider can’t totally remember. Plus they have disc brakes and 31 spline axles. Motor mounts you can use factory 1994/1995 mustang 302 mounts but swapped side to side. Heater box needs to be notched for valve cover clearance. Headers are a headache. Some fit some don’t. I opted for now for 2001 V8 explorer exhaust manifolds. I even used the factory V8 explorer radiator at first. Worked totally fine. But when I just redid the front suspension I used a custom aluminum radiator that I had purchased originally. Another guy on here Jodi. He did a newer ranger V8 fuel injection A/C everything. You can see how he did the wire harness. But feel free to ask any questions. Good luck.

@@1953fords no not really I was in the process of doing the same thing myself but to a four-wheel drive 97, I'm going to wire everything up myself carbureted motor and it was just seeing all the back and forth that he was doing it kind of threw a bunch of doubts up in my mind but let you know that's not me like I know what I'm going to do so when I do do the video I'll explain more have a great day
@@jacintocastillo75 ok sorry for the vague answer. So you can easily put in any ford 289 302. 351w is wider so little tighter fit. People also put small block chevys in these. And even Chevy LS engines. You could put in a molar small block. So it’s up to you. I’m a Ford guy so of course small block ford. Hope this clears it up thanks for watching. Just have fun and enjoy what your doing.
