Ford's Fight To Remain An American Icon

Ford is the oldest U.S. automaker. But new technology and changing consumer preferences could put the century-old company in jeopardy.
These days, Ford Motor can't seem to please investors. Shares of the automaker are down around 25 percent this year, even though Ford remains a profitable company with an iconic brand and a solid footing in some of the fastest-growing automotive segments.
U.S. rivals General Motors and Fiat-Chrysler have managed emerge from bankruptcy to impress the industry and investors alike. But Ford, the company that to American ears is practically synonymous with the history of the automobile, is widely seen as being very much in the middle of a turnaround.
The company's third-quarter earnings surpassed expectations, even though they were down from the same quarter in 2017. As of Monday's premarket, shares have climbed 16 percent since the release of the latest earnings report on Oct. 24, but they are still trading below $10 a share, while GM's shares hover around $38 a share.
The automaker has shown strong performance in North America but continues to struggle internationally. Its South American business has not made money for years, and Ford said in late October that its businesses in China and Europe had "deteriorated." This contrasts with GM, which sold off its European business and is doing rather well in China.
To be sure, Ford is taking action to reverse its fortunes.
The company has separated its China business from its Asia-Pacific segment and hired an executive to run just that region. Ford's primary problem in China has been an inability to keep up with the rapidly changing consumer tastes of the Chinese market, said IHS analyst Stephanie Brinley. Ford recently released a new SUV just for the country called the Territory, and is planning to put out several more vehicles to refresh its lineup there.
It has also said it will undergo an $11 billion restructuring that will cut jobs from its salaried workforce of 70,000 employees.

There’s your problem right there! Remember how much Ford had changed from Mulally? He wasn’t even in the industry but he still took Ford to greener pastures. The F-150 is a great truck, but man oh man they are crazy expensive, as are most nice pickups today. Even a base model strip is like $25,000 to $30,000, and a good one with some extra features are $45,000+, and loaded trucks are $60,000+ which is insanity. What happened to the days of a nicely loaded truck being $30k to $35k ? Frigging $50k+ is not what the "working man" can afford.

Overly technical vehicles is whats killing the industry. Imagine what it would cost for a vehicle out of its warranty to replace the Infotainment system. Or the wiring for a back up camera. The used car market in about 7yrs will be full of cars needing these repairs. Nobody will pay those costs. So they will in the end have a car that is on the same level as an '08 with none of that garbage

@abelardoconesa9512

RockTheSix true that the current vehicles and all future ones are full of technology. That is driven mostly by consumer demand. If we did not want it the manufacturers would not add the stuff. Ppl want a vehicle that connects to their smart phones, they want their music and also much of the needed safety features. Having an option most would purchase a vehicle with collision prevention and lane keep assist features then pass on the options. Now regarding the seven year old used car market, I disagree. It would be detrimental to franchise dealers to place for sale cars with tech issues such as a faulty infotainment system. The dealers would either fix prior to selling or do a batch sale of these vehicles to a second run "buy here finance here" dealer. Also normally at about the age of 5 years the gear heads normally figure out how to disassemble all if not most of these tech packed cars. That has been my experience with the automotive forums I belong to. We can search enough and be certain that a solution is out there.

Joey Varacalli I doubt it. The Fiesta just isn’t practical for all but a tiny segment of the market, which is why they stopped selling them in the North American market - the demand just isn’t there. And crossovers today get better MPG than midsized cars did in the recent past. On top of that, there’s also the matter of diminishing returns with regards to fuel efficiency - you save a lot more going from 15 to 20 MPG than you do going from 25 to 30.

Vehicles are way to expensive , my son bought a F150 4 door pick up 2017 was $45k its getting way to expensive and people can't justify $600-$1000 a month for 8-10 years, thats just a simple fact.

@@edgarh252 Well the average is 20,000 miles a year give or take. So my truck I bought new so at 20,000 a year at 16 years old means 320,000 miles, I have 200,000. Some guys only use their truck occasionally and maybe put 10,000 a year or less on them or more a lot more if traveling at distance for work or used as work vehicles. Dealers go by the national average on trade ins or they can use the age of the vehicle, either way you loose money. You know you buy a brand new ride you loose 1,500 dollars just by signing the paperwork, yep its not new anymore now its used. Vehicles depreciate at a alarming rate, faster than homes, money etc.

we need analog cars that work well. Like Mr. Ford originally intended he planned on making the model T for ever. He seen no reason to change the model. Investors forced him to do it eventually. One day he bought the company back out from underneath them being all tricky. Very slick move. Just they sold the same car for the last 50 years one model. Only adding the next necessary safety features. There'd be such a available repair inventory. The price of the vehicle would've dropped over time due to repeatedly manufacturing. We can go build a car for next to nothing out of the junkyard. If all the cars in the junkyard had the same parts. Think about that

I dread going to a dealership, some refer to as a stealership. I had a few bad experiences in my attempt to purchase a new 2017 then 2018 model Ford product. Was lied to on agreed price, another dealer price changed once I got to the dealer to look at vehicle, traveled to another dealer 6 hrs to discover the vehicle I set up an appointment to test drive had sold 4 weeks prior. When contacting Ford corporate about these incidents, it's always the same answer, "We can't do anything about the dealer, they are independent from us". This was a far worse experience than another brand I frequent buying. Ford also needs to get control of some of these dealerships. The dealers do not engineer and manufacture these products but poorly represent a brand in a way that will continue keeping me from setting foot in a dealership.

Timing chain tensioner broke and I had to have the engine removed to repair it. Two years later timing chain broke and the engine was replaced with new engine. Transmission did not want to go into reverse, needing rebuilt transmission. Radiator started leaking just as it came out of warranty, Then 20,000 miles later the AC compressor seized requiring new compressor lines and condenser. two years later the AC compressor mounts failed and the compressor just popped off while I was driving. The transmission started leaking 30,000 miles after the rebuild, that required the transmission to be removed repaired and reinstalled. All that happened on it first 100,000 miles. Now it has 120,000 miles and I just got my explorer out of the shop, because of failed torque converter and transmission damaged caused by that. Bottom line was new torque converter and another transmission rebuild. Ford requires special tools for many of the engine repairs, and some repairs like timing chain cannot be repaired unless the engine has been removed, but the worse thing in my opinion is there is no transmission dip stick, if the transmission leaks you are screwed.

I can’t figure out if it’s correlation or causation. I don’t know if people tailgate because they own one, or if these people would tailgate regardless of what they owned. Thing is, the heavier and bigger the vehicle, the hardest it is to stop. That’s why semi trucks leave an insane amount of room in front of them. I can’t compare stop ratings among various vehicles, but I bet that the stopping distance is worse when compared with a car of the same year and manufacturer. Yet this false sense of security makes them feel like no harm could come from them. Or, that in a collision, they’re more likely to come out on top versus an actual car. That’s one of the reasons I believe they have their children drive one. ...because first time drivers are always better off in large vehicles that are difficult to handle. They are more likely to be in a wreck than before, but at least they’ll be better off than the person they cluelessly hit. But really, I think the real reason is people assume that if they have a family, they need one. Station wagons are out. Vans are for businesses and pedophiles, and minivans are just depressing. When I first had my daughter everyone kept asking us when we were going to get one. We never did. Traded the car in for a few other cars. They have all served us well. I think people hate us because we did not cave to peer pressure, while they’re all stuck driving a lame vehicle that they will never haul anything large or go off road in.

Ford would be just fine if they didn't discontinue the Town Car and Crown Vic. They failed to realize that people in the real world actually like V8's. Now you can't even get a Lincoln with a V8.

Felton I was just reading the specs on that Rivian electric pickup due to come out in 2020. It will cost almost $70K. That is like $20K higher than the F-150. The general contractors who buy trucks are not going to switch over to electric if the price is not even close.

Not a single comment about autonomous vehicles!?? Where is Ford in that arena? I drove my own vehicle for decades and now don't own a car, and what a relief. Its cheaper to hire uber or to simply rent when on vacation. I'll NEVER spend $40,000 on a steel box that depreciates 50% in 5 years...that's a LOT of Uber and Alamo rentals without the hassle of parking, registering and insuring one's own vehicle.

I have owned several Ford cars. My first car was a Ford Ranchero. It wasn't til I was in my 30's,when I bought a 98' Ford Contour SVT. Four years later I decided to trade it in for a 2002 Taurus SES, followed by a 2006 Taurus SEL. In 2008 I bought a new Fusion SEL and kept it until last July when I purchased a new 2017 Fusion Titanium Hybrid Energi. This is far better the best car I have ever had from Ford. I am so disappointed that Ford is discontinuing its car line. I don't want to buy anything but a Ford, but I don't want any SUV. Come on Ford, wake up!

3 simple steps to make Ford great again: 1. Come out with a new affordable car and partner with A large financial firm to structure payments not as a loan or a lease but at a rental system using technology on a per use basis... that way multiple people can use the same car and pay less than what it would cost to traditionally finance a car. Cars statistically sit so your Ford app could be used to deploy a car when ready. The Ecosport would be a good platform to get people to work and only be used when needed. Buying large parking garages in large city’s would help encourage people to drive together and save the environment at the same time. 2. Do better brand management. Millennials love Uber, Tesla, Apple... you need to leverage platforms like RU-vid and Instagram to get young people excited about your car brand and the history while tying your brand to things they like - movies, tv series, come up with Apple phones that tie directly with the ecosport or edge etc. 3. Go niche and make quality cars... no one wants mass produced turds. Subaru has done what you should’ve done. Made quality affordable cars that people can trust and depend on! Maybe you should hire a young millennial entrepreneur like an Elon Musk and partner with him to make a “Tesla” JR car that’s affordable to teachers small families. Once you do that voila no more boring redundant cars like the Taurus will ever be made again. Oh and bring back the town car and here’s a whacky idea... 4 door mustang!! Mind blown.

So the T-Ford cost just 300 dollars brand new back in the day, that's like 10 000 usd today. But instead a base F150 costs like 30k...
@AgentSmith911
@AgentSmith911 5 лет назад
@Eddie Sloan My point is that you could get ground breaking, brand new cars back then for an affordable price. Todays cars aren't really affordable as most people need to go into deeper debt to get a car. Imagine going to a dealer, see a heavy duty truck for $90k and signing a 5% down payment on that with a $45k a year salary (yes, I know people who do that). We need cheaper cars.

The Ford Taurus were build rock solid. I am talking about the ones build in the 80's. In my neck of the woods, every know and then I still see one of these old school Taurus drives by. Usually it is the older folks behind the wheel. It is a shame Ford can't translate that success into today's world.

build a small cheap truck. Something 2 wheel drive that's not all jacked up and doesn't need to have a 50,000L v100, a large 4 cylinder is fine. Give it a modern interior though, nothing crazy fancy, no leather and crap but put in a touch screen that controls everything and a digital display for the dash. give it power windows and remote start and adaptive cruise control standard. No need for a stick shift, make them all automatics. Make sure it comes with everything it needs to tow a small/medium trailer. And sell them starting for 20k max and you will sell a million of them next year. If Honda can put 20 times that tech into a Fit and sell it for 18k, you can make a small truck for 20k. See most of us don't want a monster truck, we want a truck we can haul some lumber or mulch in, help move some stuff or tow a small trailer for an ATV, or small boat or whatever. Give us that and we will buy them again, instead of your 40k starting monsters or your 25k starting Ranger that is like driving a car build in 1980 but the size of Maine.

I have been a loyal ford owner my whole adult life. I want a simple, basic pickup. I want a cast iron block,cast iron heads, and a steel body. I don't want a bunch of dodads and gimmicks. I just want a pickup that I can depend on and afford. I used to never have to take a Ford in for warranty work. The last Ford i bought was an over complicated piece of junk that i couldn't depend on. I now buy older cars, preferably with a carburetor instead of fuel injection.

I had driven nothing but Fords since my first car(a 1976 Mustang II, lol) purchased used, after I got my license in 1981, until 2 weeks ago, when I traded in my 2012 Fusion, a victim of the dreaded 4 cylinder engine knock caused by a cracked block Ford didn't want to fix, along with a chronically balky and jerky transmission, for a 2019 Honda HR-V.
