It was time to do a transmission oil change on the Ford 4500 Select o Speed. When I first got it I knew the oil was contaminated with water and a little gray looking so new oil should be better for the transmission. Thanks For Watching

Godamighty son! Thank you 1,000 times! I had tried nothing, and was all out of ideas 😂! No, seriously, thank you for this video! Ain't nobody in Central Flarda who has even heard of a shift-o-matic tractor. We have had this one for 12 years (my Uncle got it in Georgia)and it has never been properly serviced. Now that I have inherited the sob, maybe I can salvage it thanks to you.

Glad it helped you out. Hopefully the Selecto keeps going good they are a nice transmission if taken care of.

This video saved my bacon! I haven't found the trans filter yet but I'm sure one will turn up. Much appreciated buddy

Thanks for the vid, I have a 2110 selecto and was wondering about the trans fluid as well. It seems like I can use the same stuff you used but hoped u might know if it be different Also when u do the rear fluid change could you upload that vid as well, this is so helpful. Thanks

The SOS transmissions all use the same transmission oil as far as I know. They call for the Ford 134d spec oil but the J20A spec oil found at a lot of places covers it.

I just bought my first tractor, and it’s a 65 ford 4000 3 cylinder With the SOS. My fluid is milky like that too, (bothers me that I don’t know exactly how it happened, but could have bought it like that) getting ready to go through mine. I have the service manual and operators manual along with the parts manual. Nice video, where did you get the o ring for the inlet screen filter? I’m doing the engine oil on mine right now, waiting for the adapter that allows a regular screw on type oil filter to be used.

I was able to match up a o ring from a variety o ring kit. Water can possibly get in around the top cover or where the selector cables go in too.

@@TheGoldenHillFarm Right on thanks man, I’ll probably have to pop that top cover off and change that gasket, I suspected water could be getting in there, it seems to pool up around the bolt holes. They say to never use a silicone on there but I’m awfully tempted to put a very small bead on it and under the bolt heads, and around the cable protrusions. Speaking of which, how do you disconnect that hard line to get the cover off with the cable running through it? I’m planning to do the hydraulic fluid change, and power steering last. I’ve heard those hydraulic fluid filter and screen aren’t even worth doing every time, maybe the hydraulic top lid needs off each time? And if you’re going that far you might as well change some seals I’m thinking

@@Rickengle300 To get the cover off the selector should be in park then remove the bolts holding it to the dash then loosen the conduit nut on the transmission then shift the lever to 10th gear this will give enough to unhook the two halves of the cable. the pto handle assembly has a nut holding it to the dash loosen the conduit nut at the transmission pull the handle all the way out then turn it clockwise until the cable unscrews from the connector in the trans. You might want to unscrew the lower half of the gear selector cable out before removing the cover too. Then when you put it back together there's a certain length it should stick out. There's no filter under the cover inside at all on the newer trans just on the early 4 cylinder sos tractors just a paper filter under the cover on the left side up near the dash so you don't have to take the top cover off again. The select o speed group on facebook is a great source of help and info too

@@TheGoldenHillFarm thanks again! I seen your fix for your shifter cable has that held together good so far? Yah the only reason I’d take my cover off it just to change the gasket on it and do a cursory inspection. This morning I drained all the milky fluid, pulled the suction filter, and the paper canister on the left side, had to order a wix filter because the Hastings ones seem to be out of stock. My tractor came with the backhoe and loader as well, I removed them both so I could completely inspect the engine. So far a clogged air filter, and an injector that had big puffs of exhaust or fuel out around its gasket, needless to say I got a new seal set on the way and an injector tester (cause might as well at this point), can’t believe that engine was running that strong. Now with the backhoe and loader I have several bad leaks from the cylinders. I’m thinking about hooking them up to my tractor again to stroke each cylinder to find all of the leaks, I’m a bit worried about the exchange of fluid from that equipment into my tractor. Normally I’d do that and then change the hydraulic fluid after it’s all done because I’m sure it needs new fluid. But the filter for the hydraulic system sounds like a chore to get to, had to change that one yet?

@@Rickengle300 the shift cable seems to be holding up. I see on the facebook group someone was able to get a company to make new cables for the shifter I haven't seen anything on that in a few months. Haven't had to change the hydraulic filter yet some loaders just have it drop out the bottom of the reservoir

Got a 4000 pulled up to bury a deer in my soybean field went to leave and the thing won’t move I shift the selecto speed and I can hear it changing gears acts like the inching peddle is depressed but it’s not ??
@TheGoldenHillFarm
@TheGoldenHillFarm 6 месяцев назад
Sounds like it could be the traction coupling disconnected the trans from the rear end. On a 3 cylinder 4000 theres a lever on the right hand side of the transmission that engages and disconnects it on the 4 cylinder 4000 theres a little tab on the left side cover of the rear end that does it. might have to take the cover off to see if the arm is in the slot on the coupler too.

thanks for putting this out there! just bought a 64 ford 5000 super major with the SOS. The R1 R2 gears are super late to engage and it slams in with the clutch disengaging slowly, any ideas? Is it possible for you to adjust the tranny bands on this transmission? TIA
@TheGoldenHillFarm
@TheGoldenHillFarm 9 месяцев назад
I just posted a band adjustment video on the older and newer thousand series transmissions. The reverse gears usually are like that all the time I try to use the inching pedal to very slowly go into reverse but it usually always kicks in.

@@TheGoldenHillFarm Perfect! Thanks fella. Fairly new to owning it. Would a plugged screen cause a loss of suction to the pickup pump? It just seems wrong for good preforming tranny to slam in.
@TheGoldenHillFarm
@TheGoldenHillFarm 9 месяцев назад
@@leiv2 That could cause a loss of suction or even a dirty filter too. Most are overdue for a oil change and sometimes low oil too

@@TheGoldenHillFarm ill update cha when i change the fluids. even when I use the inching pad it doesn't make a difference at all. its like its disconnected or something. not engaging.
