Great vid, like all your others, your an inspiration & love your channel. I have a quick question, does the dimmer switch still dim the led’s? I drive a lot of back country roads and while I love the bright look of the LED’s most of the time, I sometimes bring them down to dim to make night driving easier on the eyes. I still have regular bulbs in but considering led replacements because of 1 being out and having to get back there anyways! Thanks

Thank you. Yes, the dimmer switch still works perfectly 👍🏻 I’d recommend only changing the illumination bulbs and not the indicators.

Just a heads up the headlight switch itself is it’s own removal tool all you need is a pocket screw driver turn the lights all the way to 3 position then slightly pull the headlight switch out you should see an opening close to around 7 o clock to insert pocket screw driver and then the knob then slides of the rotate the knob 180 then rotate will then active the release of the switch

That headlight switch is actually really neat the way it comes out. If you give the knob a slight pull there is a tiny hole underneath for a small screwdriver to release the knob. Once the knob is off, you take the knob and put it on upside down and turn it, and it’ll pull that spring loaded locking pawl in, and the whole switch comes out from the front. Basically the knob is a secret key/removal tool.

The color green is a combination of blue and yellow, called complimentary colors. If you take separate blue- and yellow-colored glass or thin plastic, place one over the other, and put a light behind the 2 pieces of glass you will see a green color. There are other complimentary colors, too. The reason why you may see a bit more blue with green may be because of the color density of one color over the other. There are other possible explanations as well. Your point of just minimizing the risk of damage is a very good point in any repair. Thanks for your well explained video.👍

That light switch appears to be removed the se as my 99 f150, the process is: Step 1. Turn headlights on Step 2. pull knob towards you (fog position on such equipped trucks) Step 3. use micro screwdriver to pop knob off fascia Step 4. Turn knob 180 degrees, so that the back of the knob (where you inserted the screwdriver) is now pointing to headlight icon, press onto switch to reinstall. Step 5. Turn knob to off position and in (fog lights off) Step 6. Turn headlights back on. The little fingers on the back of the knob should now have those tangs retracted so you can pull the switch out of the dash.

Excellent video! They aren't really "directional" - it's a matter of LEDs being polarity sensitive, so positive and negative voltage have to be correct. That's why you might have to rotate them 180° sometimes. I was confused at first, but then I saw that clarified on the Amazon product page.

Thank you. This is an important point that I initially missed. Later I realized that there was a + &- symbol on he LEDs. A few pointers to add, After changing my illumination and idiot lights Some of the holes in the back of the cluster come from the factory empty, If you are uncertain which ones are blank they will have no scratches on the silver tracing under the bulb holder. Secondly most led bulbs are made by the chicoms so If you reverse polarity and it still does not work you likely have a bad bulb always get more than you need. Thirdly not all of the indicator lights come on in the accessory position some only light up when cranking, Anything else can be checked by opening the door, turning on the flashers, etc. EDIT My indicator lights are now glowing faintly all the time this can only be seen when it is dark, also the turn signals and high beam indicator are to bright for night driving I really like the brightness of led but they are not dimmable I will be going back to halogen.

SO.....I DID THE SWAP FOR THE LED BULBS OVER THE WEEKEND.....AND I LIKE THE WAY THE DASH LIGHTS UP.....I DISCOVERED THAT THE NEW DASH LIGHTS THAT LIGHT UP THE MAIN DASH LOOK GOOD.....SIZE # 194.....THE TURN SIGNALS LOOK GOOD....SIZE # 37..... HOWEVER.....THE LED BULBS THAT I PUT INTO THE WARNING LIGHTS.....(LOW FUEL.....AIR BAG.....SERVICE ENGINE SOON.....BRAKE.....WAIT TO START.....ETC.)......SIZE # 37.....SEEM TO STAY ON.....THEY ACTUALLY HAVE SOME LIGHT PASSING THROUGH THE TEMPLATE THAT MAKES IT LOOK LIKE THE LIGHTS ARE ON AND DIM.....EVEN THOUGH THERE NO ISSUES WITH THESE WARNING SYSTEMS..... THE LIGHTS ARE NICE AND BRIGHT WHEN YOU FIRST TURN THE KEY ON.....(STANDARD FACTORY BULB TEST).....THEN.....THEY SEEM TO GO OUT AS USUAL.....BUT THEY ACTUALLY LOOK DIM.....NOT OUT.....THE SYSTEMS "ARE NOT" ON.....BUT THE ICONS ARE LIT UP DIM AS THOUGH THEY "ARE" ON..... DID YOU HAVE THIS HAPPEN?....AND HOW DO I SOLVE THIS PROBLEM?....THANKS.....
@LivingOnWheels
@LivingOnWheels 3 года назад
I didn’t replace my indicators but a few people have said they had the same issue. I’m guessing because LEDs are some much more sensitive to electricity they must be picking up on faint traces from the illumination bulbs. My best recommendation is keeping the indicators as halogen.

For the longest time I had just used those little blue wired leds that plug into cig lighter, then i finally replaced the dash bulbs with regular ones but it still looked dingy/dim as hell. The LEDs look amazing though! Just curious, when you were looking at the back of the dash thing with all the bulbs plugged into it, did you have any slots that were empty? Cause I had two empty spots... the 'THEFT' light and one other one didn't have bulbs in them. There is a better way to take out your headlight switch what you do is Turn headlamp switch knob to the headlamp ON position and pull the knob out. Insert a thin tool into the slot at the base of the knob to release it and pull the headlamp switch knob off. Position the knob and with the bottom end toward the headlamp ON position and push on shaft. Turn the knob counterclockwise until the back of the knob is in the OFF position. Turn the headlamp switch knob clockwise fully, remove the headlamp switch from the instrument panel and disconnect the electrical connectors. I think I explained it correctly. But by removing the knob and reversing it and then putting it back on the shaft and turning it, it pulls in the spring clips that hold it in place and lets you just pull it out. Its like a 15 second task. Follow removal procedure in reverse order when installing the original switch.
@LivingOnWheels

I enjoy your videos and look forward to new episodes. I have a 99 350 Crew Cab with 157K original miles. My dad bought the truck new in July 99, one of the first out after the new body style. Hence, I have some unusual differences compared to late model 99's. I have added the 2008 style mirrors and had to remove the headlight switch. I found an awesome post by Franz M, a 2:22 minute clip that will blow your mind how easy the headlight switch is to R/R. Check it out and add an update! Thanks

So what was the total number of bulbs needed of each?
@bradleywpierce

BTW, I just found out, polarity matters, at least on the big ones and the small white one on top. If it doesn’t work, just turn it 180 degrees.

White. I tried green and it didn’t work well.

Great informative video content! I have a bulb out for my environmental controller switch. You’re right, there’s not a lot of videos to remove the dashboard. I had to replace my factory trailer brake controller. There was only one video but it had a pullout container which I didn’t have! So, thru trial & error I gently got the dashboard removed. I was praying the whole time that I didn’t crack the dashboard! No fun at all! Any suggestions for fixing my ‘05 6.0L driver’s side window? Luckily, it stopped working in the up position. Are there tips/ways to check the switch & motor? Thanks for all you do making your videos! Even tho I have a ‘05 6.0L, a lot of your mods are universal for the Powerstroke. With you, Nick (Fix it Nick) & Cody (Powerstroke Project) all of you guys have 7.3 but I have learned so many universal mods! Thanks again

Unfortunately there is not a lot of good ways to work on the window motor while its inside the door. If it were my I might try to sneak in one of those light testers and see if it is getting power to the motor when its supposed to. Other than that you'll probably have to just pull it out and test it manually.

Great video. What year is your truck? I have a 2002 and am wondering if my light switch will be different from yours from your description. I was hoping later in the video you would show what the turn signals and high beam looked like. Are the LED's dimable? Keep up the good work.
@LivingOnWheels
@LivingOnWheels 4 года назад
Thanks. my truck is a 2000. I'm not sure which years had what switches. I only replaced the illumination bulbs with LEDs so all those indicator lights look the same. Yes, the ones I used are fully dimmable.

installed the blue LED bulbs and about 3 weeks later they are now flashing on and off. Have you experienced this and if not are there LED bulbs that will not flash. Maybe I just purchased some cheepo LEDs. Thanks love the vids!

@LivingOnWheels 4 года назад
I haven’t had an flashing problems with the ones I’ve used. The main set has been in over a year and that last bulb I showed in the video has done great since. I tried colored ones and wasn’t happy with how they worked with the green film. If you’re interested the LEDs I used are linked below.

Hey I see you still have the cup thrower style of cup holder. Have you updated to the new style yet? I'm driving a early 99 7.3 and I was stoked to get the more secure version. I have learned a lot from your experience thanks.

Have you tried putting in PURPLE leds? Since Purple is a combination of Red and Blue. All you need is Green (hence the green film) to get white. Have you tried that?

Well, I finally got around to doing the LED replacements yesterday. Did the five 194 bulbs and the one 37 bulb, all in Blue. While I had the gauge panel loose I put the three power plugs back in, temp installed the headlight switch and turned it on to see if any of the bulbs needed their polarity reversed. About half were good and I easily switched the others. I could peek inside the panel and watch the bulbs light up. Here's the thing, while the middle of the gauge panel is now a nice bright blue it seems like the panel to the left and right is dark? I did the change in bright daylight so it's hard to tell. I'm going to check it again tonight and do a look-see. Any suggestions on why the left & right are dark and the middle is well illuminated?
@LivingOnWheels
@LivingOnWheels 4 года назад
I am not positive. I had the same issue when I tried to go the colored route. Maybe its how the light is routed inside the cluster. Not sure though. That's why I ended up just going back to white.

Curious if you can dim the LED's down enough for night driving. I don't like bright lights in front of me that degrade my night vision. Just enough glow on the dash to read the gauges without straining. I like the idea that the LED's will pretty much be a one-time thing, lasting virtually forever. Thanks in Advance!
@LivingOnWheels

Bwanar1 yup. The LEDs I used can be fully dimmed down to a very low level. They have been working well for me.

Lol...great detail descriptions....and you can’t give too much info...suggestion tho is to slow down the physical motion of the camera.....and everyone doing these videos needs a laser pointer to pinpoint details that they describe.... sorry to hear your selling it....
