I bought #288 of 300 2000 Mustang Cobra R model new ($64K plus tax tag and title, so pretty much $70k out the door) and owned her for several years...at that time by far the best (and fastest) car I had ever owned. Really a phenomenally engineered car, you could do 177 mph in the car with one hand on the steering wheel and it was just dead solid. I once raced a very rare BMW 8 series 2 door car on the street from a stop light up to about 145mph and beat him pretty good. when he caught up to me he was waving me down and I expected he was going to give me the finger or something, but he asked me to pull over and he said what is that? I explained to him what it was and he said okay that explains how you beat me, he said he was shocked when I walked away from him and just kept pulling him past 125mph. He said I was the first Mustang that he wasn't able to embarrass. i told him I had owned two BMW 318/20's and i knew what his car was when he pulled up next to me and seemed to want to go, most people didn't know what a 2000 Cobra R was so I assumed he didn't either. Ford had the engine rated at 390 H.P. but dyno runs of the day had it rated at closer to 435 BHP. p.s. I now own a 2019 Ferrari 488 spider (677 BHP, 206 MPH).
Those cars really had an incredible engine. Probably the most exotic of all the modular engines beyond the Ford GT. It made roughly the same power as the supercharged 4.6 they put in the 03/04 cobras.
The Cobra R spec engine specification was also used in the Australian 1992 Ford Falcon EB GT. 262-264 HP net on the Aston Martin Tickford engine dyno. Watson's supplied the Japanese built Showa GT40 intake and the same Build spec as the Cobra R's motor. The engine is a delight, even in a heavier Australian four door Falcon. Great to see David again. I remember the UTG/ Stickman/RevEvan interview on the 87 13.5 second Fox Mustangs. David, he had great stuff.
I'm not a big fan of mustangs because everyone has one. Felt like that for most my life. That because my dad was into falcon in his blood since 65' and give to me the drive to drive some else then mustang Ford power. I own a 98 for 22 yrs now so do have one . But love for falcon is soo strong. Seen first ba on speed channel I'm like wtf is that with bird n Ford badge racing eating cars . Saw first barra at Ford 100th love for one never stop. Enjoy those late model falcons From your us falcon owner 65 4door (like you lol 🤣) built 200 tri carb waiting to go in ..
I love to brag about the most powerful 302w from the factory (sort of), sitting on my back lawn. All Tickford tweaked 220kw (295HP) of it. The last of the Windsor's was also the most powerful 5.0 pushrod made. To think the new 5.0 Darkhorse Mustang is going to have 500hp is just ridiculous, and un-imaginable back when mine came out in 2001 !!
omg seeing all those pristine horsies was just awesome. i cant really think of a proper term that explains my feelings of watching this. this reminded me of my days as a young adult in my 20s. those cars were, and still are awesome and beautiful.
I remember seeing my first 1993 Cobra R. It was at a Ford show in Columbus Ohio in about 1994 ish, I was 13-14 years old and in love with Fox body mustangs by this point. Seeing it under fluorescent lights in that Vibrant red paint, black wheels with no backseat..i just loved it, it was actually for sale for $55,000 at the time which was a boatload for any mustang but it looked like it was worth every penny.
I had the opportunity to work on a cobra that had no more then 10 miles on it came to the shop to get running still had all the pre delivery plastics all over window sticker still on. New fuel tank and a battery and it fired right up. It was pretty cool
My favorite years. I've owned a 64 1/2 6 cylinder. My wife wanted it :D and my '92 GT fastback. I spent 36k in the car in 4 years and turned it into a scca track day car that was also a daily driver. It was stolen from my work in 2000. Haven't heard a whisper about it since then.
I own 1993 street model 428... it has the non-material-added intake (and there's a story about Roush and Ford on that). Bob Lyons for a while in as early as '93 I believe setup the SVT Cobra Owner's Association out of New Jersey. I have the publications from that and they go into extensive detail. However, I did NOT know there were "7 '93 Cobras" :) Way to go guys! Thank you for awesome content!
Nice to see you again Evan. You probably remember my Mike's Mustangs 88LX hatch at etown(which I just put back together) Great to see Joe Amato's prototype. I still have photos of that car at the track.
Total GM guy here, but I'll always love the fox body. Best looking mustang in my opinion. Brings me back to my HS years, where me and my buddies use to have it out with the 3rd gen T/A's & Camaros....... great times!!
I'll go ahead and tell you a friend of mine back in high school ('90) had an '87 trooper interceptor mustang that was pretty much red eye. He's out ran that mustang model, the Chevy cyclone, and the LT1 Corvette when they came out. Blew the doors right off all of them.
I had a chance to buy one of those at Romeo Ford in Michigan back in 1999. They had one on the showroom floor and were asking 45k for it. That was a lot of money back then but man what a beautiful car it was! Had less than 100 miles on it. (If I remember correctly) If I had only known lol. Great video Evan!
Another GM guy here but what a Gorgeous collection! Those Cobra & Cobra R's are Super Cool! Can't beat the foxes light chassis & 8.8 rearend factory combo👍😎
If I remember correctly, Thunderbird lower A arms could give a Fox Mustang negative camber without the aftermarket strut plates due to their increased length over the Mustang's
They really could write a book about all the interchanging that goes on with all these cars, something about the aluminum driveshaft in certain Ford van fitting the 87 to 93 Mustang, a electric fan from a Taurus and the rear brakes from a T bird and the list goes on and on
Stunning collection although I wish people would drive these cars more like all right not daily, but just locked away sitting dormant can’t be good for these cars. Then again, preserving history is important amazing collection and I get it just pains me to not see them driven.
I bought a bloody 1989 falcon EA in Australia at the time with an SVO pack that took the total price of the car to 40,000au! If only I knew I could buy a mustang like that probably cost the same money too!
I'm not a big fan of Mustangs anymore but I owned an 93 roughly around 2000-2002 and it had rear lockers , a big came , NOS , and for a short time twister heads . Unfortunately if the roads were wet I couldn't keep it out of the ditches , metaphorically speaking , so I got rid of it . I also did put it at a high speed on the interstate once but I won't say here on the internet . I do remember some models like : lightning SVT Cobras , Saleen , and I believe there was one called a Rousch but after the 93 I didn't care for them anymore .
When Steeda did this same mods on 92’s they rated them at 270. Which is far more accurate. To the right of the R, the exact color of my first GT -‘d 89, same stripe package. Amazing to see, but I traded it for a teal 93. I drove it, it did not sit. Bought it with 26,000 on April 1st 95, and when I traded it in July of 98 it had just turned 90,000. Some fool painted it black, or so the CARFAX said. Good memories.
I have the Fax paper work on this lawsuit and car #104, there was 15 cars ordered by Colorado dealer due to the fact there was no SVT dealers on the west coast and a dealer had to be a SVT Certified dealer to order one of these cars. Some of the people ordering a R did not want to be involved with the cost of the lawsuit causing them to lose the order. The other people involve followed thru and either received money back as stated or a car. These cars were produced in June, some of the last Fox body cars. I have copies if someone out there would like to look it over.
I have a 1984 Mustang GT Turbo, 2.3L Lima w a hairdryer...Canadian Build, w T-Tops, one of probably 12, of the 2,000 1984 GT T's made. It has the LA3 Conversion and top-mount air intercooler. Pretty cool odball, same intercooler as the SVO and 87-88 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe
I am beginning to think production numbers were much higher on those gt turbos. I’ve personally seen 4 in the small city I live in and I’ve seen at least 6 more in various other places. I’ve got the hood and front bumper cover off a totaled white one on my 83 convertible. I’ll own one of those turbos eventually.
buying a car with absolutely no intention of driving it is pure silliness to me. what the hell is the point? you could have a model and get the same experience. It's goofy.
So let me get this straight, the owner of that red Cobra R, was personally involved in the Courtesy Ford law suit, got his car he ordered, yet never even had PDI done on the car and never driven?!?! What's the point of that?
Those cars have not been through dealer prep, where all of the protective plastic and window markings are taken off, and items like hub caps and wheel covers are installed, among probably some other things.
I had a 87 Turbo Buick Regal that used to break the owners of these fords hearts all the time lol (just a Ttype not a Grand National) but only in a straight line lol. If we were going around any turns or required braking and stuff my car sucked at all that.
Boy those gatorbacks suck they offer minimal grip and wear out very quickly. BF Goodrich was a savior back in the day. From what I remember these were not street legal because they don't have door bars and bumpers and no airbags
Still would be suited by better heads better cam better intake better brakes, better suspension. Ahh its so entising until I remember what driving my 5.0 with many similar parts+ bein much faster was actually like. One trip on a bumpy canyon road and this guy would probably sell all his foxbodies.
There's another Cobra prototype out there. A black one. I don't remember if it was the regular Cobra, or a R prototype, but I saw it for sale on ebay a long time ago. It had a lot of custom parts from the factory. I mentioned it on a forum back in the day and another person confirmed that it existed.
I thought I was the only person who talks about GatorBacks , I used to have a 1976 Corvette that had Gators all the way around it, they were sooo thick and fat and huge but that tire sitting next to the Red R Cobra doesn’t look like a GatorBack , mine were much so wider !!! Hhhmmm 🧐
Those are nice cars. I would like to own them. But if I want to be honest their are two I would rather have than those. One is the 69 Bose 429. The other is the 83 SVO. Those in my eyes are better. But that is my opinion.
Why doesn't Ford make their version of a Chevy COPO for Stock and Super Stock? Science out vehicle, make it light weight as possible, no VIN, put the most powerful scienced out motor. Make it a truly killer car for the track. Roll cage, and expand the rear wheel wells with scienced suspension. If Chevy can do it, so can Ford. Use signature Burnt Orange for color.
If I'm paying that much more for a cobra over a gt I need more.what seats suspension and 10 extra hp.ive never understood the cobra.its mostly paying for a badge.
When a car like this R has never been registered and Ford technically still own it, how is it sold by 3rd party? How do you insure a car that isn't registered in your name?
I couldn't have so many just sitting there. You get old and die then what. I would enjoy driving them working on them, upgrading them. Just enjoy the cars while your alive and fit.
When you have a big pile you can't really enjoy, detail and present all of them all of the time. I've got 8+ Fox Body legends, one 1993 Cobra, 84 SVO, 86 5.0 Capri, race prepped Fairmont, 93 Notchback drag car, 86 GT Vert, 81 Notch and 82 GT... its hard just to keep up on oil changes and small stuff...lol... let alone weekend or daily drive ALL of them.
Could you imagine knowing so little about automobiles that you would not only drive a Ford but actually be a Mustang enthusiast?!?! WOW! Or worse - a Mustang collector... LMAO!!! Why would you collect something you would have to pay someone to take? A full size spare tire? WOW! Really!?!?! It's a $HlTBOX! The 6 cylinder 1994 Nissan 300TT made over 300HP. The 1994 V8 Ford Mustang Cobra made 240HP... so so so SAD!
Less luxury and technology and is more expensive I don't get it all you have to do is get the nice car with power windows and do a nice upgrade on the engine plus the suspension is nicer
I owned #58 1993 Cobra R for a number of years and I did club race it, like it was built for. Later it became too value able so I sold it for what I paid for it. It has 2200 miles on it when I bought it and 6600 when I sold it with 95% on track miles!
What an incredible collection! How in the world do you keep a car pristine like that? Particularly rubber components, seals, bushings, hoses etc... I understand climate control is huge factor but it would seem that they would still have to undergo a huge amount of maintenance to keep them fresh. I've always wondered about this.
At 30 Years all the rubber and cork fluid seals would need to be refreshed before vintage racing, along with brake linings, tires, shocks, and rubber suspension parts.
If I remember correctly, Ford was kinda pissed that people bought these R's and then proceeded to put them in garages like this....they wanted them to be raced (that's what the R stands for, race, not retail or resell). I believe that's why for the '95 Cobra R you could only buy one if you had a competition road or drag racing license.
the deal was you had to have a registered racing team to even buy one, regular people werent supposed to be able to purchase them because Gord wanted them to be raced, and not hoarded in a collection
Sometimes it hurts to see these cars never got their time out crushing tracks or backroads cause people wanted to keep miles down. I understand the preservation aspect and it would be sick to walk in the garage and there’s practically a brand new one waiting. but like some people just get to caught up on numbers
I bought a 93 cobra, Black, that was salvaged via theft back in 2007. At the time even the Cobras were pretty cheap. I paid $5200 for it with 89k on it. Got rear ended in it around 2012 and bought a Notchback. Really wish I had either of those cars today.
6:39 you're telling me that's a prototype notchback cobra and you're not going to mention anymore or talk about it? Go back and please give us some more information on it! Great video but you can't just glance over something like that.lol
My son has a '92 LX 5.0 that is completely factory stock, that he is currently rebuilding the front suspension and interior. It is in really in good shape for it's age, motor runs great, it has the auto trans that still shifts good. Hoping he can get it fixed soon so he can come out to the cruise ins with me and my '73 Mach 1.
Hes a lucky son, these are really fun cars to be treasured and enjoyed, too many of them ended up in the pull a part from people beating on them day and night,i cringe when i see someone cutting these up to be a race car or what not,its like "dude they dont make these anymore and haven't for decades!!" lol There are several things you have to do to these cars that is a very worthwhile thing like replacing the alternator with a mid 90s Mustang (like a 96) , the alternator that came on these was useless, conversion to electric fan,one of the best things i ever did and replacing the starter with a 92 Mustang on up (mini starter) the original starters are boat anchors and a few other things that you can do, besides that i like them stock, no need for those cold air intakes either, the stock box works fine, no need for underdrive pulleys or MSD boxes or anything like that, money down the toilet.
I always wanted the 95 R model. Of the Cobras, that was the one that just looked "right", in my eyes. The hood, the wheels, the stance. You could give me any of the R models, obviously, if you were a spectacularly good person, and I'd be extremely pleased. They were all very special for their time. It was (and is) hard enough to get something that special, but dealer mark-ups made actually getting a 95 R and a 16 GT350 untenable for me. Not meant to be. As someone else posted, I hate to see them sitting unused and dormant 30 years later, but I do understand the collector mentality, and it does preserve them in as-delivered condition. I've sold a couple of cars I had and passed on buying a couple because they were just too rare for someone that cannot leave a car unmodified.
@@BuzzLOLOL 95 R was 351W equipped. I assume the white one they show of this collection is seriously modified, but that's just a guess from the callouts on the hood; "361 CJR" or something like that.
I own a mustang that I believe is #1 of five. Ronnie Sox little boss addition. Built by shotgun industries and was in all the ford mags as the shotgun blast. I would love to show it if you would like to see it. It’s a nice piece of history. They say it is lost and one sold at mecum years ago. That car was red and is not the #1 that they claim it to be. I own the original #1. It has less than seven thousand miles and all original parts and tires.
That's amazing, there are so many variations out there that even a seasoned person hasn't heard of, pretty much when it comes to about any iconic car, there is a Corvette out there that they made like 2 of,one was in a museum and the other was owned by some guy in the middle east last i read but that was like 20 years ago.
I own a 93 Mustang with no power windows, no power mirror, no cruise control, but with rear defrost. It is an LX 5.0L engine, 5 speed, coupe in reef blue. Am the original owner purchased in Sept 93 in Canada. I was watching this video and they were gushing about the no power options in the Cobra.
@@dntlss There is a story behind the purchase. At the time, I traded in my 84 Z28. This car had been nothing but problems with all of its extra things. Power Antenna, T Roofs, etc all had to have work on them and I wanted a simple, sporty car. I saw an ad from my local FORD dealer at a bargain price for the Mustang. I took the ad and went and looked at the mustangs. After about 2 hours with them showing me pricier cars with more options, I pulled out their ad. They had not shown me the base model at that price and were not happy. But they finally showed me this car and I purchased it. The cost was about $15000 less trade in and plus fees and taxes. I intended to keep the car, and did not want all the power options for less maintenance. In a perfect world, I would have A/C but do not miss the cruise, power locks etc. And I had no idea the car would be that iconic this many years later or that I would still have the car. It has been my daily driver for all these years until last year. The car is in excellent mechanical shape and entirely original, but working on some minor paint and interior work to make it beautiful again.
Ford had another lawsuit against the 1999 Cobra which resulted in Ford recalling 5,300 1999 SVT Mustang Cobras after admitting the vehicle's engine did not produce its advertised 320 horsepower.
