Total GM guy here, but I'll always love the fox body. Best looking mustang in my opinion. Brings me back to my HS years, where me and my buddies use to have it out with the 3rd gen T/A's & Camaros....... great times!!
I owned #58 1993 Cobra R for a number of years and I did club race it, like it was built for. Later it became too value able so I sold it for what I paid for it. It has 2200 miles on it when I bought it and 6600 when I sold it with 95% on track miles!
If I remember correctly, Ford was kinda pissed that people bought these R's and then proceeded to put them in garages like this....they wanted them to be raced (that's what the R stands for, race, not retail or resell). I believe that's why for the '95 Cobra R you could only buy one if you had a competition road or drag racing license.
the deal was you had to have a registered racing team to even buy one, regular people werent supposed to be able to purchase them because Gord wanted them to be raced, and not hoarded in a collection
Sometimes it hurts to see these cars never got their time out crushing tracks or backroads cause people wanted to keep miles down. I understand the preservation aspect and it would be sick to walk in the garage and there’s practically a brand new one waiting. but like some people just get to caught up on numbers
I bought a 93 cobra, Black, that was salvaged via theft back in 2007. At the time even the Cobras were pretty cheap. I paid $5200 for it with 89k on it. Got rear ended in it around 2012 and bought a Notchback. Really wish I had either of those cars today.
I have a 89 and a 91 and i have used the 91 pretty much as a my daily for several decades, one week will not go by where i almost get pushed out of the road by someone wanting to buy it or someone at the gas pump telling me how it was their first car or how it reminds them of something important in their life, i treasure that.
I bought #288 of 300 2000 Mustang Cobra R model new ($64K plus tax tag and title, so pretty much $70k out the door) and owned her for several years...at that time by far the best (and fastest) car I had ever owned. Really a phenomenally engineered car, you could do 177 mph in the car with one hand on the steering wheel and it was just dead solid. I once raced a very rare BMW 8 series 2 door car on the street from a stop light up to about 145mph and beat him pretty good. when he caught up to me he was waving me down and I expected he was going to give me the finger or something, but he asked me to pull over and he said what is that? I explained to him what it was and he said okay that explains how you beat me, he said he was shocked when I walked away from him and just kept pulling him past 125mph. He said I was the first Mustang that he wasn't able to embarrass. i told him I had owned two BMW 318/20's and i knew what his car was when he pulled up next to me and seemed to want to go, most people didn't know what a 2000 Cobra R was so I assumed he didn't either. Ford had the engine rated at 390 H.P. but dyno runs of the day had it rated at closer to 435 BHP. p.s. I now own a 2019 Ferrari 488 spider (677 BHP, 206 MPH).
Those cars really had an incredible engine. Probably the most exotic of all the modular engines beyond the Ford GT. It made roughly the same power as the supercharged 4.6 they put in the 03/04 cobras.
omg seeing all those pristine horsies was just awesome. i cant really think of a proper term that explains my feelings of watching this. this reminded me of my days as a young adult in my 20s. those cars were, and still are awesome and beautiful.
I met a couple in Albuquerque that had one of the lawsuit 7 1993 cobra R’s and a 1995. True car people and glad I was able to see their driver cars first hand.
My son has a '92 LX 5.0 that is completely factory stock, that he is currently rebuilding the front suspension and interior. It is in really in good shape for it's age, motor runs great, it has the auto trans that still shifts good. Hoping he can get it fixed soon so he can come out to the cruise ins with me and my '73 Mach 1.
Hes a lucky son, these are really fun cars to be treasured and enjoyed, too many of them ended up in the pull a part from people beating on them day and night,i cringe when i see someone cutting these up to be a race car or what not,its like "dude they dont make these anymore and haven't for decades!!" lol There are several things you have to do to these cars that is a very worthwhile thing like replacing the alternator with a mid 90s Mustang (like a 96) , the alternator that came on these was useless, conversion to electric fan,one of the best things i ever did and replacing the starter with a 92 Mustang on up (mini starter) the original starters are boat anchors and a few other things that you can do, besides that i like them stock, no need for those cold air intakes either, the stock box works fine, no need for underdrive pulleys or MSD boxes or anything like that, money down the toilet.
When I was in Ford in the 90s we had a Cobra come off the truck, it was not to be started or run through PDI, we pushed it up to the service drive and the customer came and got it with a roll back, stickers, seat covers and all, 4 miles or so on it
I had the opportunity to work on a cobra that had no more then 10 miles on it came to the shop to get running still had all the pre delivery plastics all over window sticker still on. New fuel tank and a battery and it fired right up. It was pretty cool
The Cobra R spec engine specification was also used in the Australian 1992 Ford Falcon EB GT. 262-264 HP net on the Aston Martin Tickford engine dyno. Watson's supplied the Japanese built Showa GT40 intake and the same Build spec as the Cobra R's motor. The engine is a delight, even in a heavier Australian four door Falcon. Great to see David again. I remember the UTG/ Stickman/RevEvan interview on the 87 13.5 second Fox Mustangs. David, he had great stuff.
I'm not a big fan of mustangs because everyone has one. Felt like that for most my life. That because my dad was into falcon in his blood since 65' and give to me the drive to drive some else then mustang Ford power. I own a 98 for 22 yrs now so do have one . But love for falcon is soo strong. Seen first ba on speed channel I'm like wtf is that with bird n Ford badge racing eating cars . Saw first barra at Ford 100th love for one never stop. Enjoy those late model falcons From your us falcon owner 65 4door (like you lol 🤣) built 200 tri carb waiting to go in ..
I love to brag about the most powerful 302w from the factory (sort of), sitting on my back lawn. All Tickford tweaked 220kw (295HP) of it. The last of the Windsor's was also the most powerful 5.0 pushrod made. To think the new 5.0 Darkhorse Mustang is going to have 500hp is just ridiculous, and un-imaginable back when mine came out in 2001 !!
The fox body will always have a special place in my heart. My first car was a two toned orange and black 87 mustang gt 5 speed with t tops. Still to this day the last time a mustang had t tops
I have a 1986 lx foxbody 5.0 5 speed , 100000 miles now, it has T Tops and I love driving it, had 60 thousand on it when my son give it to me 16 years ago, even though it's not cherry people won't stop trying to buy it mainly the T Tops, you have a great day .
My favorite years. I've owned a 64 1/2 6 cylinder. My wife wanted it :D and my '92 GT fastback. I spent 36k in the car in 4 years and turned it into a scca track day car that was also a daily driver. It was stolen from my work in 2000. Haven't heard a whisper about it since then.
I own a 93 Mustang with no power windows, no power mirror, no cruise control, but with rear defrost. It is an LX 5.0L engine, 5 speed, coupe in reef blue. Am the original owner purchased in Sept 93 in Canada. I was watching this video and they were gushing about the no power options in the Cobra.
@@dntlss There is a story behind the purchase. At the time, I traded in my 84 Z28. This car had been nothing but problems with all of its extra things. Power Antenna, T Roofs, etc all had to have work on them and I wanted a simple, sporty car. I saw an ad from my local FORD dealer at a bargain price for the Mustang. I took the ad and went and looked at the mustangs. After about 2 hours with them showing me pricier cars with more options, I pulled out their ad. They had not shown me the base model at that price and were not happy. But they finally showed me this car and I purchased it. The cost was about $15000 less trade in and plus fees and taxes. I intended to keep the car, and did not want all the power options for less maintenance. In a perfect world, I would have A/C but do not miss the cruise, power locks etc. And I had no idea the car would be that iconic this many years later or that I would still have the car. It has been my daily driver for all these years until last year. The car is in excellent mechanical shape and entirely original, but working on some minor paint and interior work to make it beautiful again.
My first new car was a 1991 Mustang GT that came with Michelin tires. The salesman offered to swap them for Gaterbacks, but I stuck with the Michelins.
I own a mustang that I believe is #1 of five. Ronnie Sox little boss addition. Built by shotgun industries and was in all the ford mags as the shotgun blast. I would love to show it if you would like to see it. It’s a nice piece of history. They say it is lost and one sold at mecum years ago. That car was red and is not the #1 that they claim it to be. I own the original #1. It has less than seven thousand miles and all original parts and tires.
That's amazing, there are so many variations out there that even a seasoned person hasn't heard of, pretty much when it comes to about any iconic car, there is a Corvette out there that they made like 2 of,one was in a museum and the other was owned by some guy in the middle east last i read but that was like 20 years ago.
I had a Black 93 Cobra that I loved, so fun to drive. The week after I put the license plates on thee car it was stolen. I still miss it. I also like SAAC MK1 up on the rack.
@@lucascady4992 I didn't get one till I was 26, and it was a well worn 10 year old '82 GT. Then was an '84 Capri RS 5.0, then the '92, and now I have an '88 GT convertible which I painted white because Vanilla Ice. It was metallic red with orange stripes in the moldings, like the hatchback shown in the video. It's pretty ratty looking now, and needs a quarter panel, but would probably make it across the country with no BS. Explorer heads and intake, and pretty much every other mod. Stock cam though.
I remember seeing my first 1993 Cobra R. It was at a Ford show in Columbus Ohio in about 1994 ish, I was 13-14 years old and in love with Fox body mustangs by this point. Seeing it under fluorescent lights in that Vibrant red paint, black wheels with no backseat..i just loved it, it was actually for sale for $55,000 at the time which was a boatload for any mustang but it looked like it was worth every penny.
I’m not a late model mustang fan. But I recently saw a video with a green notchback in excellent condition, and now this with a great story. I just may become a late model mustang fan after all. ( albeit a picky one) I can’t be allowed to buy #103. I would drive it 😳 (not that I could afford it)
I'll go ahead and tell you a friend of mine back in high school ('90) had an '87 trooper interceptor mustang that was pretty much red eye. He's out ran that mustang model, the Chevy cyclone, and the LT1 Corvette when they came out. Blew the doors right off all of them.
Nice to see you again Evan. You probably remember my Mike's Mustangs 88LX hatch at etown(which I just put back together) Great to see Joe Amato's prototype. I still have photos of that car at the track.
What an incredible collection! How in the world do you keep a car pristine like that? Particularly rubber components, seals, bushings, hoses etc... I understand climate control is huge factor but it would seem that they would still have to undergo a huge amount of maintenance to keep them fresh. I've always wondered about this.
At 30 Years all the rubber and cork fluid seals would need to be refreshed before vintage racing, along with brake linings, tires, shocks, and rubber suspension parts.
I always wanted the 95 R model. Of the Cobras, that was the one that just looked "right", in my eyes. The hood, the wheels, the stance. You could give me any of the R models, obviously, if you were a spectacularly good person, and I'd be extremely pleased. They were all very special for their time. It was (and is) hard enough to get something that special, but dealer mark-ups made actually getting a 95 R and a 16 GT350 untenable for me. Not meant to be. As someone else posted, I hate to see them sitting unused and dormant 30 years later, but I do understand the collector mentality, and it does preserve them in as-delivered condition. I've sold a couple of cars I had and passed on buying a couple because they were just too rare for someone that cannot leave a car unmodified.
@@BuzzLOLOL 95 R was 351W equipped. I assume the white one they show of this collection is seriously modified, but that's just a guess from the callouts on the hood; "361 CJR" or something like that.
One thing that wasn’t mentioned in lawsuit story because of the time difference some western dealers were late getting orders in ! I was working at a dealer in Scottsdale (Lou Grubb Ford) we were kind of slighted but got part of our order did make it,I remember our GM was quite pissed off over that!
I own 1993 street model 428... it has the non-material-added intake (and there's a story about Roush and Ford on that). Bob Lyons for a while in as early as '93 I believe setup the SVT Cobra Owner's Association out of New Jersey. I have the publications from that and they go into extensive detail. However, I did NOT know there were "7 '93 Cobras" :) Way to go guys! Thank you for awesome content!
Thanks for thinking the time . Thanks that car collector for saving history. I love the 2000 r review of his car un dealer perp that is cool just like the foxes
Always been a Fox fan, never owned one though. The 93 Cobra really is the pinnacle to me as well. I did work at a Ford dealer whose owner has a 95 R. The bladder in the racing fuel cell leaked, so they did put in a stock fuel tank (the original fuel cell is in storage). The car only gets driven in parades, hardly ever really. For whatever reason, the clutch is really bad, I don't know if it glazed or the friction material delaminated or something, but the owner doesn't want to do any major work like that so you have to really baby it when you do drive it.
There was a guy in Shelby Township area (suburban Detroit) that had a 93R with the crayon marks still on it just like yours. I remember seeing it in the road and couple shows. Cool rare cars!
I had a chance to buy one of those at Romeo Ford in Michigan back in 1999. They had one on the showroom floor and were asking 45k for it. That was a lot of money back then but man what a beautiful car it was! Had less than 100 miles on it. (If I remember correctly) If I had only known lol. Great video Evan!
Fantastic collection there I really liked the Goodyear eagle tyres back in the day I think I would buy them now if I could I do remember the saleen car doing a massive takeoff skid on tv some time A red one and that has always stuck in my mind 👍👍👍
Another GM guy here but what a Gorgeous collection! Those Cobra & Cobra R's are Super Cool! Can't beat the foxes light chassis & 8.8 rearend factory combo👍😎
I had a 93 Lincoln MK 8 that had the engine that went into the Cobra the following year in 94. In the Lincoln it put out around 295 horsepower. Fun car!
I was a GM guy growing up, but I had a secret love for Saleen Mustangs. (I wish Steve Saleen did his magic on Camaros!) I have come to respect the Fox bodies, and of course, the Cobras were king of the hill!
I seem to remember they stripped these down so far as to not install a radio even. Of course there was no air con. Borla exhaust from the factory. Supposed to have been the first mustang from the factory to outperform a Corvette or something to that effect. IDK. Thirty years is a long time ago. I was maybe 9 or 10. But I def remember reading about it.
I had a 1984 camaro z28 5.0 H.O. 5-speed that was like that. It did have an am/fm radio, but absolutely NOTHING else in the way of creature comforts. It even had lightweight seats, 3.42 rear axle, and WC t-5 trans. It was the only factory-original camaro ,at the time, that could compete against the Foxbody 5.0’s. Good ol’days!
I dont understand that but i guess back then if you wanted one of these you were just gonna have it hell or high water, i can see this for a undelivered Ferrari but a Mustang?
@@shawnsanders9450 I believe they were discussing the 93 cobra R lawsuit for the 7 undelivered Mustangs that happened in 93 (he mentions in the video it was a "quick" lawsuit) ,is there another lawsuit for the 99s?
@@dntlss yes. The car didn't make its claimed horsepower and they spent so much time fixing the issue there was no 2000 Cobra because of it. Embarrassing. A time where a base $22k Z28 would wipe the floor with Fords best car even with the fix.
It's funny that the 94/95 GT got the CobraR Tribar wheels (optionally). ...it's actually one of my favorite factory Mustang wheels. ...but not in the black/chome CobraR treatment.
In 1995 I was sitting at a salesman's desk and on it was a small SVT calender. I was flipping thru, and one of the months featured a breakdown of 93' Cobra production by color. Listed were the regular teal, black & red, but also a color called Vibrant Red, and next to it was a 1. I've been told over the years that it was a misprint, and that car doesn't exist. So...the question....was there truly 1 1993 Cobra painted Vibrant Red? awesome collection BTW...🙂
don't know, but even that desk calender would be worth something...I have an old Mercury Capri dealer brochure mentioning an ASC McLaren option and a few Star Trek posters that were tossed out having the wrong release date.
If there was only 1 it must have been mine. I owned a Vibrant Red, 93 Cobra. And, yes. I have the pics go prove it. I've never heard anything about there only being 1 made in that color.
6:39 you're telling me that's a prototype notchback cobra and you're not going to mention anymore or talk about it? Go back and please give us some more information on it! Great video but you can't just glance over something like that.lol
I got to see #25 in person at a car show in Arkansas. Cool old fella. Had to original tires with the original air in them and he actually drove it home
What an awesome collection of foxes. Would love to have one of the teal/black cloth sunroof cars. Know there were 185 teal/black cloth cars but not sure of the number with and without the sunroof.
I've always wanted one unfortunately they never had the presents of other platforms , and they were kind of expensive. nowadays the LS was made for this platform though.
