Foreign Import Or American Made AK - Which To Buy?

At work, I am often asked which AK is the best, and which someone should buy. In this video, I compare 3 general classes/types of semi-AK models, comparing each and giving my 2 cents as to their Pros & Cons. Please keep in mind, these are just my opinions, so feel free to disagree. Heck, sometimes I even disagree with myself!
The first class of AK is the foreign built import. These are manufactured overseas in factories that were originally setup during the Cold War. So the rifles are usually built with old Soviet tooling and to Russian specs (for better or worse).
As an example, we have the Bulgarian Arsenal SAM7UF.
The second AK class is the kit build. These guns are assembled here in the USA using a mix of original military surplus parts, and several newly made American ones. Normally, the receiver and barrel and trigger group are US, with the rest being from demilled full-auto AK assault rifles.
Our example is a East German MPI-KM parts kit on a Nodak Spud receiver.
The final class is the '100% US Made' AK, which as the name says consists of rifles built entirely here from factory new parts.
For an example of this type, we have the Century Arms C39v2 Sporter.

@@SSS-cp1op Why Palmetto? I've heard only good things from them, except for product not being in stock.
@SSS-cp1op
@SSS-cp1op 4 года назад
Palmetto state bought out DDI and made the major parts out of a cast, and didn’t change until a lawsuit from an injury cause by cast trunnion exploding, they did eventually switch to forged trunnions, the rear trunnions are still cast, and have had 2 come in the shop both with broke rear trunnion, there rivet quality is hit or miss, inter ordnance is by far the worst, with century arms a close second, and psa would be number 3 from the bottom of the quality, for the same money I’d buy a wasr 10, or a PAP, if a wasr or PAP can’t be found a lee armory would be next in my list as a first/budget rifle.

As a magnetic particle inspector at a Foundry that casts some of the most valuable maritime castings for the Navy's CVN and VCS programs, I can tell you that even after years of experience our foundry still has issues from time to time. Once, a coworker told me he had just bought an I.O. and I told him that the casted trunnions were prone to cracking, to which he seemed surprised. Later that day he looked at a small casting (just a bit bigger than the front trunnion) and noticed how many cracks and indications were on the product. Needless to say, he learned a lesson that day. (he hasn't mentioned his time bomb gun recently, I suspect it may have failed him)

Just have him buy a used kit trunnion and have a builder rebuild it, preferably with new rivets. Will cost more, but it will work. No one will buy it otherwise.

Hi. I'm really enjoying your very comprehensive AK videos. I picked up a WASR10-63, priced at $499, a few years ago, with all the 'goodies' - oil-can, tool-kit, cleaning-rod, leather sling, 2 mags, and most important, the bayonet. Then went home and proceeded to read and watch videos about crappy WASR 10s. Fortunately there were other positive reviews that relieved my attack of buyers remorse. The only 'flaws' with mine were the puny wood stock (probably American according to your video) and a slightly canted sight - which I found was not an issue on my first trip to the range. In fact I did surprisingly well using iron sights on my first time shooting this AK. Meanwhile, I picked up a Tapco AR type adjustable stock and pistol-grip set for $25. Then a friend got me a small Tapco brake/recoil-suppressor that still allows the bayonet to be used, and my brother gave me a black polymer fore-end kit to match the Tapco stock. My big splurges for it have been a scope bracket for the side-mount, and a recent purchase of a Magpul-Zhukov folding and adjustable stock. I've seen some good reviews on the Zhukov. What's your opinion? I haven't tried the new stock at the range yet. Happy Holidays, Mark D.
@ozarkbeararms8840
@ozarkbeararms8840 6 лет назад
Sorry to disappoint, I am not a big fan of Magpul. There's nothing wrong with their products, they do polymer stuff right for sure. It is just that I am a classic steel + wood guy, so dont like putting polymer furniture on my AKs. When i do use it, i always put on original Comblock military stuff. I am not interested in the USA commercial accessories market.

Nice! My first was a wasr10 and 2nd yugo m70ab2 underfolder with the grenade gas system shut off/grenade sight. The yugos have built in night sights that flip up front and rear. Most of the time you'll have to replace the tritium but you can do that with a paperclip. And it's relatively cheap if you can find them. I hope you find this interesting. Most Npap and Opap guns have had the night sights removed but can be reinstalled. Btw the Mak90 is a wonderful firearm

I have owned it since 2009 and put over 10k rounds through it only problems have been with loose fitting mags. I love this gun ! 2nd is my mak90 i really like it have not shot near as much but the trigger and action in much smother . 3rd is a saiga 12 shotgun i converted it my self. I have had great reliability and it has a very tuff finish . 4th is my veper ak74fm side folder 5.45 i really like this gun its very accurate but being built on the rpk thicker stamping is a lot heaver than my others ans also is a few inches longer . i am looking at getting the new wbp fox 7.62x39 rifle before some thing happens and price goes through the roof . thank you for all history and insight ! To me the us guns have no appeal they look and feel cheap and are not as interesting because they don't have any history or military background. p.s i just subed great channel watched 4hrs of your vids today lol . keep up the outstanding work !

Very informative video. I've had many discussions on the AK forums about U.S. vs CommBloc AK's and have stated many of the same points you have. There are many things I buy that I would only buy U.S. made. The AK is not one of them. CommBloc AK's only for me. Even if the U.S. made AK's improve, they'll never have the AK history that is built into CommBloc AK's. Even the newer import AK's still have the military DNA that makes the AK what it is. Hey, if you want to buy a U.S. made AK, it's your money, but don't claim it has the same pedigree that CommBloc AK's have. What you bought is essentially a facsimile of an AK.

I recently picked up a blemished PSAK GF3 MOEKOV version for $650. I'm happy with it. It has worked flawlessly so far after about 400 rounds. Just from the pictures, I could tell the wood on the WASR was garbage, so it was out for me. The milled AK's don't appeal to me mostly due to their weight. I am betting that the PSAK lasts well over 10k rounds actually. I would not be surprised if Palmetto upped the specs from original Russian AK specs, simply because most soviet made stuff in my experience is low quality/sloppily made with slack tolerances, etc. Quality was not their priority in producing the AK. Rather, price was. So I don't put as much trust in the combloc manufacturing as some people do. The quality looks good all around. I like my uncanted sights. Feels good to shoot and operates well. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's not a true combloc from the country of design, use, etc. Instead of that I get an "everymans' AK" vibe from my PSAK that is also cool but in a different way. Modern. I like that it was cheap and works awesome even more than my more expensive/nicer guns. Really nice magazines compared to my others too; smooth. After I've spent another 9600 rounds or about $4k on ammo, I will know if my $650 was well spent or a waste of money I guess.

Thanks for you Opinion. I feel the same. Us made ak's look pretty hanging on the wall of a gun shop and will entice a lot of gun newbs. Funny how a 10 year old wasr 10 with a canted front sight is more desirable than a brand spanking new ras47 right now.

I think I am on board with you, at least on the same page. Don't go to a hamburger Shoppe looking for a hotdog and vice-versa I want the history of a Ak, same as milsurp pistols .i really enjoyed your post. Thanks Frank

New to your channel. 10 mins into your video. Had a question. Is the N-pap a good AK? I live in California and it's pretty cheap right now. Well, cheap for California.

Sure, at least I like it and mine haven't given any problems. I have an older OPAP from 2013 and a newer NPAP-DF from 2016. If you decide you want one, e-mail me and i'll hook you up with a good price. We ship to Cali often.

Are you ever going to do a video talking about the WBP polish parts kits (as well as the FB Radom CHF "sporter" barrels) coming into the states lately? They originally came in with solely cast trunions, but now they're coming in with forged trunions.

As a matter of fact, yes. Its one of the things in the works that will come out in October after we return from break, cheers.

I can see Misha's point as to the quality inconsistency of cast parts and the c39v2 in general versus other AK manufacturers/builders. I haven't been into AK's all that long either, but I do own a c39v2 and just purchased a WASR 10 along with some sweet mil surp Romanian furniture with the dong to go with it before they're gone. I've got around 3,500 rounds through my c39v2 and have seen no problems whatsoever with anything on it so far. I bought one before doing the research back in the first sandy hook scare...I would say that I learned my lesson on that, but again I don't have any complaints so far on the c39v2 other than it didn't come with a cleaning rod, or cleaning kit in the stock. I kind of feel like I got robbed on that one. I also have no complaints on the wood so far either. But, I've only gone hunting with it for a season and shot it around my property doing a few training exercises. I haven't been into combat with it, nor have I done any really heavy shooting with it (Ala AKOU) ....I shoot pretty fast for a semi auto but I don't just smoke the gun. Overall, I'm still not sure if it's exactly a chrome lined barrel either....the specs say chrome moly whatever that is....I'm inclined to think it's marketing jargon. However overall, I've been happy with my purchase because it's been reliable, very accurate, and I haven't had any problems out of it so far.....doesn't mean I'm not watching it and checking it for problems after all the negative things I've heard about it's manufacture. I've also been looking for others who are ahead of me in round count...so if you have one keep sharing. Keep doing videos. It's the only way to get the manufacturer to make their product better and keep them honest. I haven't tested it for head space yet, but again I'm not seeing any deformities on the rails or the bolt group. So, I have no reason to believe the head spacing would be out of whack at all either. I'm looking forward to comparing the two......the wasr is on the way.

I would like to speak with you sometime. Thing is, the C39v2 wasn't out yet right after the Sandyhook thing. Are you positive that is what you have? Also, the C39v2 does not have the space for a cleaning rod under its barrel or a trapdoor in its stock for a cleaning kit. Is it at all possible that you might have something different like the Century 1960 Sporter?

Misha, I checked my receipt and it's dated February 2015. I was thinking it was much earlier than that, but I think I'd been looking at the C39 way before that and had decided to wait for the v2. So, since July 2015 I've puchased 3 1,000 round cases of ammo and I'm about halfway through the most recent case. If you'll provide me an email address I'll send some pics at the same time I'm sending some to AK Operators Union.

How can ya tell what type of AK you have? I just bought a M70 ABM AK 47 this year (2020). It's a Century Arms AK. Milled receiver. I have no idea if it's a parts kit, imported, or US made AK. How can you tell which type of AK it is?

Outside of complete 'imports', if you want a VG quality AK get a parts kits from someplace like Apex (like an M70B1), then get a good US receiver (like NDS or Childers), then sent it off to a good builder like Two Rivers and you'll get the closest thing to a military quality AK. Places like Century (not counting their true imports) who make '100%' US AK's are going to be the lowest quality non-military spec AK. Making an AK using commercially made US parts based on cost is most likely going to get you a either a soft or brittle cast trunion or bolt and out of spec parts. I used to build AK's when the kits were cheap and came with barrels, but my last two were Apex kits and I scrounged original barrels (M70B1 and M72 B1) and sent them both to Two Rivers and got back two excellent quality Yugo AK's...IMO this it the way to go for most in the US who want a VG AK. It costs a bit more than buying a 'US' AK off the shelf, but you will not have issues like soft or hard parts where it matters most including better wood and good cosmetics due to TRA's excellent build and finish quality combined with mil-spec parts from the kit.

I have several combloc. I have a saiga and bought 2 of the 1.5mm Vepr when they came out. I did not know they would skyrocket in price. that being said. The Vepr is a ass kicking build. I have no problem with running one or two cans through them. I just wish I had bought up all I could find at the time for 850-950. I have the new 12 gauge Vepr and have not seen the appreciation like the rifles. I think there were more produced. anyone know?

I can tell Century Arms mainly sell for profit because they are the only ones that have AKs available in California but this makes me question the quality of both Century and Arsenal. What else did Arsenal skimp on if they can't just put on a $10 grip and $10 thread protector on their AKs to make them California legal?

It's not just the inclusions but that is an issue. Forged parts wear harder and handle impacts better than cast parts due to the grain structure following the shape of the part as a result of the forging process.

Great video! What do you think about the 7.62x39 Saiga Sporter rifle? I bought one before Commiefornia decided not to sell these Russian imports within the state. This rifle runs very smooth... and I have not had any failure to feed or failure to fire after many hundreds of rounds thru the gun... This is a pretty good gun I bought for $500 bucks...

Yes, they are good, solid sporting/hunting style rifles based around the AK operating system. While fit & finish are anywhere from decent to very good, the underlieing rifls themselves are as durable and reliable as any true military AK, cheers.

I recently purchased an M72B1 carbine Tanker or paratrooper version with a 16 inch barrel from Classic firearms in N.C. The rifle was built by James River Armory in Burgaw N.C. James River Armory is owned by a U.S. Marine. I would like to get your 2 cents on this gun. So far I really like it. It is September 2020 and I have had this for less than a month. I wish to here all good things about this gun. Can you help? Thanks.
