Zastava NPAP - Is Yours a Ticking Time Bomb?

Today, we talk about and examine the Serbian NPAP M70 rifle. The PAP series is manufactured by Zastava and imported into the USA by Century Arms. Specifically, we look at the NPAP-DF underfolding stock version based on the M70AB1, as well as the OPAP M70 fixed stocker based on the M70B1.
Much has been said in the last couple years about the PAP series; both very good and very not good things.
Here we're not trying to tell you what to think or even really if this rifle is or isn't 100% good to go. Instead, we're just going to take a look at some of the claims about the NPAP and try and do a bit of critical thinking and (hopefully) objective analysis. Sounds like a lot of fun eh?
We hope this video at least helps a little, especially if you are thinking about buying one of these or have one already and have concerns. Also, we do have range shooting videos with both of these firearms, so please check those out too if you have not already.

I am surprised people like this video so much, but it is a good feeling to be appreciated nevertheless, cheers.

Excellent video sir! Being a Mechanical Engineer and having worked as a Test Engineer in an assignment, I fully subscribe (pun intended!) to your point of Test Conditions, sample size, etc. I also think Rob Ski will appreciate your designating his test conditions and results to be extrapolated from them as well as calling them the "Rob tests". As an aside, I have a Century Arms C92V2 and am glad I purchased it with the Zhukov furniture vs the cheap American wood furniture. Your points about hardness, rivet locations and shooting frequency vs failure probability, among other points were spot on. Keep up the great, though provoking and always informative videos! Awesome video Mishaco. Zastava is my favorite type AK. With 2 Opaps, an Npap, and an Npap pistol, i am very happy. Looking to purchase the Zastava pistols now. I've had 3 Arsenals, a Romanian, and sold them all. Just didnt like them once i bought my first Opap. Aresenals were ok, to me, it's just my opinion, they seemed cheap. My only AK i wish i never sold was my Polytech AK folder with bayonet. It was beautiful. My first AK ever. It was a mistake to sell that one. Better thank Santana? Nope. Just the fact that prices sky rocketed on those rifles. Maybe. Only on beauty, the Polytech beat the Zastaza. I dont pay attention to the Las Vegas stuff. You dont run top fuel dragsters down the strip continuously all day without something breaking. I don't know what AK is considered an top fuel dragster. But they're all going to break at some point. My Zastava's? All great, reliable, never had a problem. i don't even look at the rest.

Guys remember those who say these paps are weak torture tested them, they put cases of rounds(many) in short order. Regular joes like us will never( hopefully) treat them like this. Most tend to baby them not that its necessary.
@ozarkbeararms8840
@ozarkbeararms8840 6 лет назад
Given enough time, say 5-25 years, a lot of people could get their PAPs over 5k rounds. As you say though, it would be at a much slower rate, with cleaning/maintenance in between, and just generally less stress on the firearm over those years. If the PAP cost $1,000+, yeah I'd worry more about the reports of problems. At $500-$600 though? I'll takes my chances, and so far, I've gotten lucky with a total of 4 (including my M92PV). Speaking of, when my gunsmith was install the stock on it, he commented that the steel was quite exceptionally hard, which he thought was a good thing *shrug*.

I have the Npap underfolder, it's probably one of my 3 favorite guns. I put the Wolff extra power spring in it a few months ago and you can notice a difference when cycling and was a fair bit longer than the stock spring. I'm lucky if I can shoot 500-600 rounds through it per year. I shoot most of my guns regularly so I have to spread the cost around all of them. Great video as always, great work.
@ozarkbeararms8840
@ozarkbeararms8840 6 лет назад
Thank you for watching. We're both in the same boat. We own enough guns, that even if we went shooting every weekend and shoot 6-8 guns at a time...we'd be lucky to get 500 rds through every gun a year. When i owned only 1 or 2 AKs, sure, I could put 2k+ a year through them, butthese days? Plus after awhile if a gun is 100% reliable, just continuing to pull the trigger on it gets a bit, well boring heh.

Very informative video. I just purchased the NPAP two weeks ago...I haven’t shot it just yet but like and appreciate this rifle already above my other AK’s (except for my SAM7SF that is) for the fact being that my grandparents were born in and hail from the former Yugoslavia which makes it all the better for me...anyway, after reading up plenty on this variant and watching all the videos including Rob’s from the AKOU I decided to change a few things before putting it through it’s paces. First order of business was getting rid of the Century installed wood...called Apex out there in Colorado and had them send me the original Yugoslavian wood buttstock, handguards and pistol grip...the wood is f’n awesome!...the buttstock has the serial number burnt in from the rifle it came from...it gives the rifle a more authentic look and definitely adds character!!...I kept the Century installed pistol grip on because I like the way it feels in my hand and it just looks nicer...secondly, I replaced the stock recoil spring with a +15 Wolff XP and installed the much dreaded buffer everyone seems to think is useless...I have the 2 rivet design on the rear trunnion so I feel with the buffer installed the rear trunnion will take less of a hit...I’ll run the Yug at the range with and without it and we’ll see how it goes...of course you lose the option of using the bolt hold open notch on the safety because rear travel of the BC is compromised by the buffer but again, we’ll see how it all goes at the range with the dreaded buffer...I also replaced the Shepards Crook with a Power Custom pin retainer plate...had to file the hole ever so slightly in the plate to get the safety to sit and fall into place and it fit nicely...So the Yugo is ready to go...I’ll give a range report once I get a few hundred rounds through... ...

To date, i've never heard of a DF failing..though honestly i have only heard of a small number of the NPAP M70s failing either. I noticed that Zastava moved the top rivet on newer imports, so this should better spread out the recoil stresses. This change along with a better recoil spring should keep the NPAP in fighting shape for decades to come w/o worry. Thanks much for watching also, cheers.

If you like the NPAP youl love the new ZPAP. Zastava is a great company who actually listens to their customers and updates their rifles. For example Zastava for the ZPAP threw out the problematic Tapco trigger group and uses the original trigger group and it works flawlessly. They also are the first to open shop in the US so their guns are not made compliant by some third party group like century. These practices are effective as can be seen by AK Operators Union who ran the 5,000 rounds test with the ZPAP and had no failure with the gun itself, and showed none of the wear patterns as the NPAP did. Now if Zastava could just chrome line their barrels they would blow much more expensive AK's out of the water.

I had an NPAP with the Tapco G2 single hook trigger and I liked it much more than the one they put in my new Zastava Polo Automatska Puska M70 w/ an Epsilon AK VG6 muzzle brake/flash suppressor..........WHEW !!! That's a mouth full !! The current trigger is in my opinion not a bad trigger. It's a double hook that exhibits just a little creep, but then does brake cleanly at I'm guessing maybe 4 to 4.5 pounds. But my Tapco G2 had zero creep and broke like glass at maybe 3 [ ?? ] pounds, and I considered it to be a real life ' target ' trigger. Anyway I love my current ZPAP M70 w/ hardwood stocks.

The AKOU test ran it over with a truck, then bitched about the receiver cracking. I didn't see any examination after the truck, so for all I know, that's what did it in. Mine looks great and I trust it. It's machining quality and finish looks great. If the factory workers can change a dull bit, they have a leg up on their romanian counterparts.

Thank you for watching. Agreed, my PAPs feel plenty solid to me. I like Yugo pattern and Romie Cugir AKs for different reasons. Both have Pros/Cons. My PAPs are tighter, bit heavier, and have nicer/more even finishes. My WASRs have chromelined bores, bayo lugs, take standard furniture, and people have run them 10s of thousands of rounds w/o reporting major issues. On the otherhand, they have more play, the parts have more wiggle and shake to them, and the WASR UF stock feels weaker (and only locks on 1 side).

I love your channel. My very first AK was an M70 with black poly furniture, it was an excellent gun and I wish I didn't sell it. Like with all guns, it's a crapshoot, some batches are good some are not, sometimes one bad gun sneaks past QC. The solution is to KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN INSPECTING AN AK! Most of your major issues will be visible to the trained eye i.e.; sloppy riveting, cheap stocks, poor headspacing, misaligned receiver rails, etc. Great examples of ALL AKs be they WASRs, Saigas, VEPRs, Bulgys, Norincos, etc. and plenty of bad examples of all of the above. Some better than others. Be smart and do you're homework and you'll be fine.

Thank you much for watching. And agreed, with literally every product, there can be and really are some lemons. Just look at our experience earlier this year with the Polytech AK47S Legend. Most would consider that gun to be one of the very best ever imported and I am sure most are great rifles, but for us ours jammed worse than literally any other 7.62x39 AK we've ever had. 'Shit happens' hehe, doesn't make the Legend a bad gun and I am not selling this one. Just meant we had to work on it bit, that's all.

Good informative video. I own both the fixed stock and down folder versions of the NPAP. The fixed stock which I purchased 3 years ago had the Tapco trigger and hammer which caused the action to feel rough. I think as you suggested that the hammer geometry was not designed correctly and had a tendency to damage the carrier tail. After grinding and smoothing the sharp angle of the hammer and replacing the recoil spring with a Wolf extra power, the gun works perfectly. The DF version which I just purchased recently came with an RAK trigger which I think is a vast improvement over the Tapco. The hammer gets rid of the sharp angles of the Tapco and the action functioned smoothly right out of the box. I do not have high round counts in either gun but haven't experienced any problems with either gun. Fit and finish are excellent for an AK in this price range.

First, I am a huge fan of Zastava/Yugo variant firearms. I own them as far back as A Yugo M24 Mauser and several pistols and rifles from true milsurp up to modern commercial stuff such as a NPAP bought in 2015. One problem we see with the NPAP is the mushrooming on the back of the bolt carrier. This happens in many other AK variants as well, and rarely turns into a problem. Mostly cosmetic, but can cause issues if it gets bad enough. It seems to work harden the metal before it can mushroom bad enough to cause problems, thus putting a stop to further deformation. The mushrooming seems to be caused by US made 922r hammers, which have a large hump on them that most milsurp hammers don't. The tail on the bolt carrier slaps against this, causing the mushrooming. I shaved down a bit of metal on the back of my hammer, and have seen no mushrooming on mine. I do get slapped in the face by the buttstock no matter how I hold the gun... another complaint I have with the NPAP, but not a big deal. One potential problem I do see, which really bothers me is that the carrier will try to jump the rails at the rear of its travel. There seems to be a slight problem with the length of one of the rails and the bolt carrier does try to jump up at the very rear end of it's travel. Hand cycling the gun I have had it bind up at this spot, but it has never caused a problem during actual firing. To solve this in mine, I simply put a recoil buffer in so that the carrier doesn't quite reach as car back to where it meets this problem area. I know that's not a good way to "fix" something in an AK, but this is just a range gun for me. If I knew a more permanent fix that didn't require a welder and more skill than I have, I would do a more permanent fix. Otherwise, the gun shoots great. The non chrome line barrel doesn't bother me. Neither are either of my Yugo SKS rifles chrome lined, no big deal. My Yugo Mausers of several types all shoot great, I have three Yugo M57 "Tokarev" pistols and they are all awesome. Someday I would like to get a true fix done to that issue with the carrier wanting to jump the rail, since I know a recoil buffer is a temporary band-aid at best.
@ozarkbeararms8840
@ozarkbeararms8840 6 лет назад
Thank you for watching. Honestly, if the carrier isn't jumping the rails during live firing, I wouldn't call it an issue. Recoil buffers can potentially introduce other problems as they shorten the bolt group's overall travel distance. Really though, this is only an issue with a full-auto as it increases the cyclic rate. If your NPAP is running fine, I'd just enjoy it and not stress much, cheers.
@Toolness1
@Toolness1 6 лет назад
That is definitely true of the buffer. I need to put some more rounds through it without the buffer and as long as it keeps running fine I'll leave it out. That just worried me when I noticed it doing that when I cycle it by hand. I love the crest on that Opap buttstock.

I agree about the Tapco trigger. I swapped out the original trigger in my older AK with a Izhevsk stamped receiver and immediately noticed the carrier tail started to deform. For now I "quick fixed" by recontouring the hammer angle but plan on completely replacing it with a Geissele/ALG AK trigger. I really like the feel of the Tapco trigger but the geometry is definitely off.
@ozarkbeararms8840
@ozarkbeararms8840 6 лет назад
Really, it isn't a huge issue but since the fix is easy and inexpensive, why not? I've been switching to either Arsenal double hook triggers or the new FIME single hook which is patterned on Molot's semi FCG. In both cases, I am plenty satisfied.

The zastava m70s and paps are all wonderful rifles. I own a bunch and shoot them mich more than the average guy. Also have arsenal, wasr, vepr and more. My go to rifle is an m70. The o pap is the same basic gun without a few do dads. the n pap is the same gun that they built before going to the 1.5 reciever m70. They are import rifles built to military specs. It would not be cost effective to do otherwise. Zastavas springs have always seemed weak. Put a spring in it and it will still be running when your kid gives it to your grandson. Im a fanboy, an ak fanboy. I love them all but for the money, quality, smoothness and reliability, Ill take a zastava any day of the week. If I had to sell them all I would keep my m70 underfolder. Ask yourself a couple questions. Are you going to run your rifle over, drag it through a stream and not clean it for 5000 rounds? Nuff said. I love Rob and love his tests and hell it made it to 5000 rounds! Its one of the best!

A lot of AK's would benefit from a wolff or alg recoil spring....truth. My npap and m70b1 both received the ALG and went from launching empties 75 feet, down to about 25 feet. Recoil is not necessarily "less," but certainly smoother now. And it's nice to know the guns' function is not impeded, while at the same time they are not beating themselves to death anymore. No bs buffer here.

I bought a brand new m92 pistol. Last year, I took off the lower hand guard and saw a bunch of bluing salt residue in the front of the receiver and around the barrel trunnion. After removing the residue, I found bad rust. Almost rusted through the receiver. Shame on Zastava for lacking enough quality control to even rinse the bluing salts properly. Of the MANY AKs I've purchased, this is the only gun I've had this problem with. I appreciate your video. I just wanted to throw out my experience with "modern" Zastava. I own quite a few military Zastava pistols and rifles and they are great guns.
@ozarkbeararms8840
@ozarkbeararms8840 6 лет назад
I've had that happen too, so bad the stuff looked like dish soap when I was washing it out. That was on a Cugir. Agreed, it is very sloppy QC. Also remember, the M92PV got as low as $399 retail at one point, so yeah. It is ashame Arsenal or FIME or someone else didn't import these Zastava guns. I think we'd have seen nicer guns...though pricier of course.
@2aEdu
@2aEdu 6 лет назад
I hear you. I paid $399 for my M92PV. Rust on a new gun, bad at any price. I never bought a NPAP. The bluing salts mess on my M92 kind of turned me off to these Century Zastava imports. Probably good guns though. Just not for me. I too wish someone besides Century would import these. I also hate how century ground off all the Zastava markings on their kit built Yugo guns. I like my older Dan Coonan kit built M70 folder. It retains the Zastava Yugoslavia markings on the rear sight base and the serial numbers on the parts. Makes the gun look so much more authentic. I think its a shame that these current Zastava imports don't have the Zastava factory markings on the rear sight base, like the military guns.
@ozarkbeararms8840

If i were to guess? I bet Century asked Zastava not to put their rollmark on these guns. Century wants as much credit as possible.

Greetings back at you & thanks for watching. Here the OPAP is the closest we can get to a true M70B1, with the NPAP-DF the closest to the M70AB1. They have never sold an UF model with the 1.5mm receiver, though I am sure some creative American gunsmith could make such a thing. A friend did turn an OPAP into an M72 LMG a couple years ago for example.

I'm seeing this same video a year later. Mine has the original wood furniture, so it looks dated and used. It's a dark brown, almost burgundy finish. The under folder is pinned because...CA. I was doubtful about whether or not I had a real Zastava so after inquiring about it with APEX, I was told that in a way it is but it isn't a rare model. It's a Zastava because it's from Yugoslavia and that's pretty much it, I was told. I'm still happy I have it. I noticed after watching this video at 27:25 that mine is an AB1 with grenade sights, which I bought as a parts kit from APEX. I had it sitting under my bed for almost a year. There was a misunderstanding with a builder so he only populated the barrel, and I was going to finally get it built about a year later after that misunderstanding. I took it to another builder who had a state of the art set up behind his home. He looked at it and gave me a price for the build but I didn't feel comfortable. Good thing I waited a little longer and found a reputable builder who saw it when the barrel was populated and immediately noticed it wasn't aligned correctly. I haven't shot it due to life and death family issues and other problems that took a heavy toll in several ways. I wasn't aware about Zastava's reputation when I first purchased my kit but was impressed with what a Russian operator had to say in one of his videos where he tests AKs. I then read more about Zastava AKs on the web and noticed more great reviews and praises. But then again, my rifle may not be the kind of Zastava he talks about in his video. My only concern would be the rifle failing on me if I had to use it a lot in a chaotic situation like a civil war or worse. Not that I see that happening soon but.... That's probably where my VEPR AK74 would come in handy.

I have 1988 Yugoslavia M70B1 with more than 2000rds from just me shooting it. No telling how many rounds went through it before the parts kit build. No deformation on the tang of the bolt carrier, not even a scratch on the rear trunnion. I love my M70B1!

My carrier's tail is fine too. I squarely blame the Tapco G2 hammer for doing that. I've noticed mushrooming of the tail in all kinds of guns....and they had 1 thing in common; a G2 FCG in them. I even started to notice it on my beloved Archer, so that G2 got pulled out immediately.

I’ve had my npap for 5 years, probably run close to 5000 rounds thru it. Still a tack driver at 100 yards, 4inch plate. Only change was, I had to dremel out the mag well out a little to take a drum. Welded metal was ground to the dimple on one side and not to the other. After that, no problem.

On the barrel softness, it would be interesting to slug the bores on some of these high round count Npaps. I know back when AK building was popular I built quite a few Yugos from parts kits and even if the barrel looked great (great riflings, shiny bore, etc...) often times the bores would slug very loose, along the order of .315-.316. I know those barrels were soft and always wondered if the softness had allowed the bored to enlarge some. I have no idea if this translates over to the Npap as I'm sure changes were made between the military guns VS the commercial made firearms.

I am not buying the failure videos on these guns. MAC admitted that they took zero care of the gun they ran to breakage. They never cleaned it and then bump fired it like it was set up as full auto. The right tool for the right job. My N-Pap was never meant to be treated like that. To me, it is a plinker on the weekend once in a while. Not a full auto battle rifle. I equate that to my never changing the oil in my Outlander and then driving it like a racecar. I bet something will break that wouldn't under the intended use. Take the failures with a grain of dramatic salt that got everyone to watch their shoot until it dies vidoes.

Agreeing with you. Honestly, there are very few NPAP failure videos online, and of those, most seem to feature guns from the 2013 batch of imports, which was the first year for the model. These guns eem to hold up just fine and really don't require any special care or babying. The only thing I would do personally is switch out the recoil spring.

I live in the willies of Maine and don't have any local stores where I can actually check out AKs. The only way for me to get one is either used market (pretty slim here for ak) or have my FFL order one for me which is pretty much agreeing to buy it when it comes in. This eliminates the ability to inspect anything prior to purchase without being a dick and not buying the gun I had him order. These N-PAPs seem great but what are your thoughts on having to order and buy one sight unseen? Thanks and great video as always!
