I've actually got a surprisingly similar story. Late in 2017 I had to go to hospital to get my appendix removed but when I was first taken to the ER in the early morning they weren't sure what was wrong with me, they just knew I was in a lot of pain so they put me on morphine. I'd been awake most of the night before and had been fading in and out of consciousness due to the pain, so my awareness was pretty bad anyway, so adding morphine to that was a hell of a jump. The last thing I could properly remember was that before I went to bed I'd been playing Warhammer Total War as the Goblins. After about 15 minutes of waiting in a diagnosis room with my parents I was first given morphine and fell asleep almost instantly. I'm told it was about 5 minutes later that I sort of woke up, but I had no concept of where I was and what was happening, so my brain attempted to connect my whereabouts to my last intact memory: Sat at my desk commanding my Goblin army. Noticing I was awake, my mother asked me something along the lines of "how's it going?" or "how are you doing?" My immediate (and fairly slurred) response was "Well I'm off to a good start because my Goblins are cheap but I'm fighting the Dwarves and I don't really have any way to get through their armour yet". Cut to my mum and dad thinking I'd become hysterical and trying to get a hold of another doctor whilst I wonder what's wrong and promptly pass out again.

what about if the 256X tech upgrades had increasing/decreasing rates like in the market trade? The more an upgrade is used the more an upgrade costs, the less upgrades are used the cheaper they are. So it pays to be first and use upgrades that aren't popular. Just to make it moe judgements and makes it random for who buys what first, each gaining edges in certain tech upgrades paths.

I loved how Sgt_Peppers built a siege workshop, created a mangonel, started shooting the forest, saw that nothing happend (20:05), typed "oh yeah" "great", deleted the siege workshop and continued doing his thing :D One amazing "oh shit"-moment!

There is a fantasy book that always reminds me of x256 tech. The name of the first book in the series is The Runelords: "In this world, people can grant endowments-physical or mental attributes-to other people. Those who have acquired such endowments are called Runelords, and tend to be nobles or soldiers. After all, a warrior with the strength of five men and the stamina of three is going to be tough to fight on a battlefield. On top of that, Runelords are almost unstoppable in battle, except by other similarly powered Runelords. Instead of facing them down on the field, strategy has evolved to focus on assassins, who try to break into Dedicates’ Keeps and kill the helpless Dedicates, weakening Runelords out on the field. It’s a fascinating look at all of the implications of the way this magic works" So there are people how are faster than the human eye. and as T90 pointed out, if they havent upgraded there castle in AoE you can kill the king to win, similarly in the book they assassinate dedicates to make someone super weak.

Why not get the +1 range and damage tech in blacksmith 256x in castle and imperial age and snipe enemies from afar? Forget it. Villagers OP.

Wait, is it possible to counter this strategy by going full on monks and giving them the range upgrade tons of time, so you can convert the buffed villagers before they get trough the wood and use them to kil their king ? Not sure if converted ennemies keep all the upgrades they had or not, might missremember that.

correction: sappers make your vils one hit a tree instead of three hit, it saves a good amount of time to be worth it in a forest nothing map. This is why celts is the best wood-chopping civ, but because huns don't need houses, you're way ahead of celts anyway

I don't think this is conterable. Loom gives +15 HP/tech and sappers gives +15 damage/tech. Other techs give like +1 or +2 damage.

Hi T90, I've got this idea for a map and since you said you were willing to try every map idea, here it goes. Do a Villager nothing map. Infite food, no gold, no stone, no wood, hun war. All you can create is villagers.

Architecture setting buildings on fire sounds like an Integer overflow. AOE2 is a 1999 game so they might be using 16 bit unsigned ints.

You should try the Khmer on FN. the farming doesn’t become an issue with wheelbarrow plus you can make hella tanky and high damage dealing battle elephants.

The best way to play forest nothing 256 tech mod is with the cheat Aegis: Speeds up the game a lot at the start and mean you don't have to be as diligent getting upgrade buildings etc.

I wonder how Aztec monks would fare against these villagers. They could heal the king since, unless Spanish or Inca the villagers attack is just 3, not to mention the movement speed upgrade.

Wouldn't be inca vills a good civ for forest nothing? I mean their vills benefit from blacksmith upgrades AND there's the pioneer upgrade. Just an idea

Loom x256 is the ultimate answer to this game.

With enough Husbandry cav-units can keep up with the villages but villagers get so much armor and hp from loom that they cant be killed fast enough.

So the TaToH strat is the meta for the 256x forest nothing?

Wouldn't Persians be better than Huns? Faster TCs would be a huge bonus for producing villagers and getting research done and 50 starting food can help give you an edge getting to Feudal first. Also rather than hiding your king in a building you can hide him in a box formation of stand ground elephants. Villagers will have a much harder time killing an elephant than a Castle.

Why nobody ever researches conscription? It makes your reserach time practically 0, so you dont have to cycle through all your building to do reasearch...
