Forge welding a wheat head from 9 gauge steel wire and 1/4" round stock. This is done with two U-shaped pieces of the wire, one twisted right and the other left which are forge-welded together and then to a stem drawn out from 1/4" round stock. The focus of the video is more on using the induction heather than it is a how-to on this type of twist.
In this experiment, I'm using a block of wood on the anvil as a backing and a 1" x 2" (finished dimensions 3/4" x 1 1/2") as a hammer to join the two halves of the twist. This arrangement avoids actually forging the wire (which makes the "kernels" of the wheat an unattractively square shape).
The weld of the wheat head onto the stem (done with a light ball pein hammer) also shows a technique for dealing with uneven heating when welding a smaller mass onto a larger one.
