Forget Selling Your Harley 96 and Make it Pull

The Harley 96 really doesn't take much to make some more modern power, there are several option for just about any situation. It's not time to sell your Harley 96 just yet to get weighed down by payments in search of more power. Your Harley 96 already has everything you need, the same stroke as the Harley 103 just a smaller bore size. Cam upgrades on the Harley 96 are a great start but it's still limited by it bore size. You can upgrade to 103 cylinders and add some higher compression very inexpensively or even go out to 107 if you choose to do so. All the numbers are pretty close and depending what you already have done will really determine the path you need to take.

I had the intake, Rinehart true dual exhaust, Woods 555 cams and a tuner my mechanic recommended (can't remember the brand) added to my 2010 FLHTC with the TC96 and it became a totally awesome machine. It put a smile on my face that wouldn't go away.

I'm 68 and original owner of a 09 Fat Bob , 32k. I started with a SE Heavy breather, Magna Flow 2x2 ex,FP3, runs great and has been the most reliable bike I've had (had my share).my other additions focused mainly on known weak points. Replaced CC tensioners, added Feuling oil pump, adj push rods, 2 inch tank lift, Accell Stealth coils (hotter spark and removal of coil and wires), BDL 2" belt drive (compensator and terrific Barnett clutch upgrade), external breather system (mounted catch can where stock coil was). So, cams? Maybe for my b'day....

My 96 really benefitted from a free flow air cleaner, V&V short Shots with quiet baffle (for some added back pressure?) S&S easy start 583 cams and a remap on a rolling road. It pulls hard, so much so the clutch slipped in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. I fitted the Barnett 9 plate clutch and a higher rate pressure plate. I've got a Popeye left arm now but the bike performance is enough for me (for now anyway). Lots of future options to consider.

My 96 is bone stock. 2010 Ultra. 23,000 miles. Previous owner bought it as a retirement gift to himself and toured Europe in it quite a bit. I've had it a few months and I'm contemplating changes to help it last more so than make it faster. Focus on cooling and full-compliment cam bearings etc. I like that a Harley is a forever bike. You can build and rebuild them indefinitely. No reason why it shouldn't outlast me.

I think 95 to 103 cubic inches is plenty of displacement! If you want more power focus on other things, cams, heads, pistons, etc. rather than in just upping displacement. I remember when the 96 inch motor first came out, and people were thinking it would be a substantial power increase over the 88, which ended up not being the case. About a 5 hp increase, and 8 to 10 ft lbs of torque. The 96 inch twin cam has some good potential it just needs woke up, get the right cam in, get it breathing good, and a good tune it will make a world of difference. If you make the right upgrades, and take good care of them, the Twin Cams are actually some good motors.

I'm an 88" guy if I get another bike I would absolutely get a 96" the 103 ho is a beast, but I'm an odd guy, I like small displacement and large power . I know most times you sacrifice reliability for performance, but I've found when it comes to the Harley V-Twin as long as you stay in the 1.25 HP per cubic inch you don't see a lot of reliability issues. Provided you do the math and get a good set up of, heads , cams, and tuning. The cams and heads are the most important part of the build for power. No replacement for displacement but damn if it ain't fun to try to do 😂

The only Twin Cam I would even consider would be a fairly low mile '02 and earlier carbureted non balanced 88 with the Timken bearing (almost certainly a Dyna) I don't ride hard, I don't ride fast, I just like to cruise, feel those wonderful vibrations and listen to that beautiful exhaust note. I wouldn't make any modifications to it other than an exhaust system if it didn't already have one I liked, tune the carburetor for the exhaust if necessary, and add some more chrome. Aside from their feel and sound, IMO anyway, chrome is what Harleys are all about.

Those early twin cams with the timken lower are awesome, just get that tensioner system updated to a hydraulic and you're good to go.

Right on, man. I have an '02 FXDL w/ CV carb, (FI was an additional option that year, for extra $$$ of course), 16K on it. Bought it brand new in '02, and then got busy with work/life. Stage 1 with V&H Big Shots. Time to get it back on the road.

I should do this to my 2014 street glide 103 Just have a stage one now. Looking for some more power. I can’t believe just a set of 10.5 to 1 pistons and a cam can get me up to 117 fps torque. That’s exactly what I’m looking for

Compression and cams really goes a long way on those motors, torque is pretty easy to make but the big horsepower comes in if you really get into the motor.

@GixxerFoo

Turbos make some great power and to me they are a lot less invasive to install. You're going to spend 5K either way with a turbo alone or getting deep into the engine to make the same power.

I have a 2018 Street Glide Special M8 107 with Harley's torque cam, Ventilator air cleaner, V&H Power Dual header and High Output mufflers. The dealer tuned it with Harley's Street Tuner. The numbers are nowhere near the numbers you're getting with a modified 96. They got 92 HP & 105 Torque. That said, the bike feels very fast to me but I've always questioned those numbers. Do you think I should be getting more from this setup? Great videos & THANKS!!!

GIXXER, question: I've been following your channel since I owned a fully built High Comp 140hp 120R. I now have a basically stock besides cams and cam plate 88" 2005 Twin Cam (carbuerated). I have a found a company that makes a 131 monster bore kit that of course requires a bit of working. What's your opinion on this? I will drop the link for you below. Thanks, Nic. Your advice, knowledge, and obviously high intelligence is interesting and provides very thoughtful insight.

Excellent content, at what point when installing cams in a 88ci stock do I start thinking about springs
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 11 дней назад
As long as you're using a cam designed to be bolt in you don't have to worry about valve springs. But if you choose to go with a high lift cam that's when you'll get into needing some valve springs.

This is good info. I am considering this with my 09 FLHTCU. However, I am hearing you should have the crank welded and trued once you start inching close and above the century mark in HP and TQ. Is this true?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 года назад
It's not a bad idea to have that done with the pressed cranks. But on the flip side I would argue the pressed cranks aren't all bad, you just have to be mindful of how you ride the bike. Main thing is do not lug the engine, that will absolutely scissor a crank in a hurry. If you keep the rpms up and don't let the engine lug you're good to go.

Heeeheee! I had a Nightrain with the 96ci, went through MMI's Harley program, and while in school built my motor out to 107ci, polished and ported heads, went with Fueling cams, cam plate, hiflo oil pump, hydraulic tensioners, bearings, etc., if I remember correctly It was lil' over 110 hp, the top side of 120"lb of torque...it would lite the tire up in 3rd without the use of the clutch, which I changed out too, shortly after finding that the stock clutch didn't handle the extra torque so well after that it was just right to me...then 6 months later a nice lil ole lady hit me in the ass sitting at a red light, totaled the bike and the insurance company ended up not letting me purchase the bike back, so I'm sure it was a nice surprise to whoever tore into the motor, or it was crushed😭

Hi Gixxer, Could you please do a video on newly assembled engine. How to break it in. We just installed S&S 110 big bore in 07 Heritage 96 Ci and I am very confused because I have been told the following: Don't ride at steady speed, don't let rpm rise too much, no lugging, no reving the throttle, don't heat up the engine, don't get in 3rd or 4th gear etc. With Los Angeles traffic, it is very hard to do all of the above. For first 50 miles, I have done 16 miles and it has confused the heck out of my brain. Please advice something simple to follow.

I have no desire to be riding a high strung race engine. I want a Clydesdale not an Arabian lol. What cam would keep the ridability of the 96, with some more jam?

Hi, do the 110ci CVO barrels and pistons from a 17 model twin cam fit onto the 96ci?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 года назад
Stock 110 cylinders won't fit a 96 without case boring, now 110 cylinders from a drop on kit will fit. The 110 SE engine has a larger case bore than the 96 and the cylinder spigots are thicker on stock 110 cylinders. The drop on kits use thinner cylinder spigots which are heavily reinforced material wise. It's kinda dumb in my opinion but likely why the MOCO did it that way to sell 110 drop on kits. The 96 and 103 are the same case bore and 110 drop on kits will fit either motor, but Harley says their 110 kit doesn't fit the 96.
