Great video(s) John. Picked up one of your hawks recently and really enjoy the balance and strength...throwing it at a primitive event this weekend! It also gets a lot of looks. Keep up the good work....
So inserting the cutting bit in this tool is to get more thickness for shape forging? Could a smith just not use the cutting bit and forge the ends to themselves instead of inserting the cutting bit? Or are you trying to get more weight using the cutting bit? just trying to tap into your knowledge and thought processes. Thanks JOhn.
Rock Mike the body of the axe is made of a low carbon non hardening metal. The cutting bit is a higher carbon steel that can be heat treated. If you made the entire axe out of higher carbon steel you could just wrap around and weld the ends. Historically this is the way it was done because good steel was very expensive.
Rock Mike oh it is I’m sorry I was thinking this comment was on my new video. In this case adding in the bit is just to get more mass to make the blade yes
I am slightly concerned that the rasp teeth on the bit weren't filed down flat, having them present in the weld could have caused some cold shuts. Is there a seam present in the top and bottom of the blade?
Thor - God of Thunder no there was no seam. The flux can get down into the teeth and dissolve the scale within reason. And these rasps are a simple carbon steel that welds to itself very readily. I’ve used that axe for yard work quite a bit since this video and it’s help up well.
stage forge/Jon that’s more useful when joining something without as much surface area contact, like when doing a fish mouth weld on a Viking axe. With how much metal is on each side of the bit it holds just fine.
John, thisisthe4th time I have subscribed to your channel! 4 times because I keep getting unsubscribed! I didn't do it, I'm sure you didn't do so, so that leaves RU-vid! WHY do they do this?? Are they trying to keep you from getting the money or do you know? It annyos the hell out of me! You aren't the only channel I have been unsubscribed from! I'd bet it has happened with as many as 50 other channels, too! Just letting you know so that MAYBE you can do something about it! Thanks! I lovethe work you do!
Either way great job man I subbed that I always thought this was a really cool concept back when Dave Canterbury did this. I check out your other videos
