Nice piece Roy. Well done! I don't mind the longer video's at all. I enjoy seeing the entire process and what leads up to the finished product. Thanks for sharing this one.

I love the longer more detailed videos as im learning the tricks of the trade the more info you provide the better as far as im concerned. My dad was a blacksmith but passed before i could learn from him so im picking up the trade to bring myself closer to him as i admired that man so much. I don't know much but watching your videos sure has helped.

Awesome video!!! I would love to see a spring universal bottle opener such as the lastic universal bottle for our elderly folks (but much nicer, of course!) Or maybe a wine bottle cork decorative head, or, err... some gothic keychains and possibly spark generators for outdoor campfire/survival. Really lovely work!!!

I give you credit Roy. You're an exceptionally talented smith and your instructional vids are very precisely detailed. I love how you walk the viewer through your entire process, making it very easy for them to replicate your project. Peace, brother.

Love the content. Your teacher's approach has me setting up my own basic forge. No anvil money yet. I just have a heavy inch thick plate of steel, a cross ping hammer, a good torch, and some bricks. I'm starting small and I only see this as a hobby for myself. Much respect to the craft. Thank you and yes the longer videos are great. You are adding meaningful content.

Algorithms say I'm the odd one. Lmbo. I do quite enjoy the longer more in depth videos especially if given the choice of 2 or 3 short ones over several days or 1 congrus longer one...I vote one longer one. Now as for the piece you created. Well that's very nice. I do like the chased lines and respect the amount of work it takes to produce this effect. Very nice indeed. 🙏blessings your way Crawford out 🧙‍♂️

Pickeling refers to soaking in a mild acid, usually white vinegar to remove forge scale carbonization.

Very interesting. I like the chase work, and the general "feel" of the piece. That's awesome. I can see how it would take a dot of time to make VS a quick, and dirty sort of bottle opener m I do like to keep my stuff under a bright orange when working on finer things also due to less scale coming into play. Very clean looking work. 👍

Superb. Longer format is actually good. Makes it easy to follow. Questions. What woukd that sell for? How long does it take you to make one w/o filming slowing things down? Do you make more than one at a time?
@kevinwatson5833

I think video length is more project dependant ones with more technical skills i think should be longer love the gothic scroll. And the treated wood usually only goes about a quarter inch deep you can plane off the majority of the chemicals

That turned out really well, I love the ...... ok, I was going to list the bits I love then realised it would be quicker to say that I love the whole thing!!!! I especially love the way BLO makes forged items look, it's like instant antique in a can/bottle 😁 it is probably worth reminding people to burn their rags as it can do the whole self combustion thing and burn down your shop..... just chuck the rags in the forge and keep the fire where it belongs. As to the length of video, I love watching long video's, so make them as long or short as the video needs to do the piece justice. I do feel a bit guilty only having to watch 36 minutes when this would have taken hours of work to produce. If you weren't filming, how long would this normally take you? Thanks again for your great content and teaching 👍👍👍👍👍

Hey Roy! Another great and informative video. I just have one little critique, that is, the shadow that is being cast on the anvil was distracting for me. I don't know if you're trying a new lighting system. Anyways, keep up the good work and have a blessed day.

Did you file inside that tooth? Last you thing showed, you'd made the rough cut with the hardy tool, but now it's really round in there.

I actually enjoyed this one, as a step away from "quick n dirty". A question for you though. I've heard that doing some pieces ( reppouse'/chasing) by setting the piece in a block of lead, similar to chasing pitch? Would this be a good way to brace the item, while doing the engraving? Really appreciate this video. I learned hammers, can take a day or more, recently 😉

What does pickling do
@wiley979
@wiley979 4 года назад
The acid in the vinegar eats away at the oxide scale. Saving you from having to do as much sanding/filing to keep the detail crisp. Depending on how thick the scale is it can take a day or two. You can shorten the time by heating the pickle. I would caution you away from using a stronger acid. You want the gentle process, and the fumes aren't harmful.

Would it be good to lock that wood block into the post vise? Or do you want that kinetic transfer to die out in the wood? Seriously asking.
@robarcher3892
@robarcher3892 4 года назад
Using wood hammer and wood block as an "anvil" this is a way to move the hot metal without putting marks on it. If Roy had used a metal hammer on the metal anvil, it would have still curled the end, but it also would have flattened out and ruined all the chasing work he did. Hope that makes sense.

In the gothic era, the technology wasn't there to necessitate a bottle opener.
@ValhallaIronworks
@ValhallaIronworks 4 года назад
Js Farrier he doesn’t describe it as a gothic period accurate bottle opener. He describes it as a gothic style bottle opener. The gothic style is a very distinctive artistic style, which he has used to make a bottle opener.
