In this video I forge a hammer eye punch out of 1045 steel. A hammer eye punch is used for punching eyes in hammers, axes and many other hand forged tools.

Nicely done. If you though forge the taper of the punch round, and then flatten it, then it will save you alot of time on the grinder cause you will already have the shape you want and just have to polish it up. Also I have had some issues with the hammer eye punches I have made out of 1045 because I have had the tips bend with un experienced strikers giving bad blows, and so I now make them out of 4140 and 5160 and they hold up good and dont mushroom as fast.

Very nice Paul! You have developed a nice touch with your press. Minimal grinding. You could have used it with none! That’s how it’s done. Now stop making me nervous. Get over to Harbor Freight and get you a 3 to 4 lb Chinesium hammer. Put a good handle in it and paint the steel so you can spot it readily. Use it only to strike tools like your drift. Save the face of your good hammer for forging only. Oh! And remember to raise hell!

Made 4 eye punches myself last week I made a set of tapered dies to forge the cutting end of the eye punch that go in the press. Bonus in the dies is the do a great job forgot g the peen end on hammers as well My eye punches and drifts are rounded ended rectangular shaped, or High ovals. The cutting end is tapered to round, then flattened top and bottom inline with the eye. Been using H13 for all of them lately, and just did one from S7 to test it's durability. Yours looks great Paul. What material was used?

Quick question Paul. If you had to buy an anvil again, in the same price range, would you still buy the nc big face, or is there anything that really bothers you about it?

Not sure if this would help considering how late I am to reply but I would check out the Kanca anvils at Centaurforge.com. They have two horns so not quite like his London style anvil but are around the same price. Hope this helps
