I forged a Japanese straight razor, Kamisori, from wrought iron and Hitachi Blue Steel. The handle is Stingray skin diamond wrapped in a piece of leather lacing.
Music by the very talented, Olds Sleeper. Used by permission, "Dark Between The Stars" - Album: Chasing Ghosts.

great video! Your wrought iron worked better than the stuff i got, mine kept cracking. Must have gotten some low quality wrought.
@lsubslimed
@lsubslimed 9 лет назад
You gotta forge wrought Iron very hot, and you don't want to hit it with too much force, forge it gently. I learned that after forging out seven, 8 inch lengths of 7/8" round wrought iron by hand over a period of time, with some of it forging down togreat barstock, while other pieces fell apart, and they were all from the same source, so technique has a big part in forging it. However, some of it will be a lot more forgiving than other pieces which are just doomed to fail, but it's good toplay it safe :) Also, try to heat your anvil by heating up a good size piece of metal and laying it on the face of it before you start, this should minimize the risks.
@SugarcreekForge
@SugarcreekForge 9 лет назад
Thanks, Nick! It is interesting stuff to work with. I try to forge it as little as possible so that the pattern stays coarse when I etch it.

Absolutely stunning video man. I think it is the only one like it on RU-vid at this level. It was nice to see the blade at all angle and the processes you used in depth. The only thing I've been trying figure out (I've been looking online and can't find any real answer) is how you shave with it? Like a traditional straight razor has a symmetrical grind so you can use both sides equally well, but the grind you put on this Wa-Kamisori didn't have an equal grind. Do you only use one side of the blade? And is the only traditional grind for a wa-kamisori?
@adventuresofskadi7277
@adventuresofskadi7277 9 лет назад
Ben le mesurier Traditionally you keep the stamped side (Ura) out and the flat side (omote) to the face. I have an Iwasaki Kamisori and use it any damn way I want lol. You can use both sides for sure man but tradition dictates otherwise. Great video btw......do you have a website??

Looks beautiful, but that part of the blade in the end that is the shiniest than the rest of the blade is either iron or low carbon steel that makes this razor u usable for shaving because you won’t be able to sharpen it and have it stay sharp (it’s soft steel or iron) like you need to (like you would hard steel with more carbon in it)
@SugarcreekForge
@SugarcreekForge 4 года назад
Hi Nikita - It looks that way, the soft part is laminated to a hard steel part. When I put an edge on it. There is enough of the hard steel on the whole edge. Your observation is very good and true. Sharpening it revealed the rest of the hard steel along the edge.
@_N_B_0496
@_N_B_0496 4 года назад
SugarcreekForge so if you flip the razor over, would there be hard steel on the other side of the soft steel? If so then maybe it’s fine like that. It definitely looks cool this way, just curious on how practical it will be when it comes to shaving

Hello, I saw you 1:37 hamer those two kinds of steel. I wonder if you fold them together like making Damascus blade. I saw Inoue Tosuke's razor has soft on the spine part while the Hard on the rest part and you can tell from the wavy line between them. I don't get why you hamer them together. Has it hard on one side of the blade and the other side soft. Is this result actually you want? Thanks.

wow, that is a sweet little gem! These are always my favorite types of vids; forging, grinding, easy listening music, you nailed it man! I like how your conserving that precious carbon steel just as the Japanese do ;) Is that the stuff from Aldo by any chance? Sure looks like you got a wide piece of it. I can't wait to be able to forge again, we recently had some crazy wind storms that blew over my HF 10'X10' canopy I had over my forge area, so I'm gonna get another soon, but it lasted about three years so it was $60 well spent :D I would like to request a shop tour man, it's always a tease seeing one tool here and there lol Anyway I'm glad to see you back at the forge, thanks for sharing this lil beauty with us Tim! I hope to soon share (or rather give you) a couple beauties of my own in the near(er) future :) ... :-/ Good ta see ya and Grace be with you and your loved ones brother Tim! ~Paul

Hi Paul - thanks for the encouragement and kind words, buddy. Yes, that steel is from Aldo. It was a nice big piece. A little pricey, but it should last for a while. Dude... your canopy blew away? That must have been some strong wind. Ha! The reason that you only see parts of my shop is that it is so dirty. I am embarrassed of the junk everywhere and my cluttered floor. I will have to get everything clean and then do a tour. My wife will faint...

You lay the blue steel on the wrought iron and hammer forge it? So does that mean one side of the blade is blue steel and the other wrought iron? Does that make it a one handed razor? Just curious. And does it work?
@SugarcreekForge
@SugarcreekForge 9 лет назад
Hi - Yes, you are exactly right. This is how they are made in Japan. When honed, the blue steel is revealed on both sides. That is the different color you see on the very edge of the blade. You can shave both sides of your face with it - the flat grind goes against your skin and the curved side away from it. Yes it works :-)

@@SugarcreekForge If you don't mind, sir. What's the edge geometry? I was hoping to make a razor just like this one from some steel I acquired recently.
@SugarcreekForge
@SugarcreekForge 5 лет назад
@@robertlombardo8437 I don't mind at all. It is hollow ground on one side and then flat ground on the other. And it is honed to a zero edge from there. Keep me posted on your progress!

That was really cool, thanks for posting it. I was expecting a shaving demo at the end, ha ha! :-) Btw, what did you etch the razor with?

Thanks, buddy. I have to get it honed and sharp first :-). I etched it in diluted ferric chloride.

Why did you grind off so much of the hard steel? The end result looks like it has some of the iron in the edge...
@SugarcreekForge
@SugarcreekForge 8 лет назад
Good eyes, buddy. I had to keep grinding down to expose the edge in a way that it would be sharp. I rehoned after I took that photo to remove that iron. Sorry it took so long to reply - I missed your comment somehow.

hey, thanks for sharing this with us! I had a question, though. It appears you forge welded tool steel to the wrought iron. But it appears that when finished the left side of the blade was tool steel and the right side of the blade was wrought iron. In other words, it did not seem like you put the tool steel at the cutting edge leaving the spine wrought iron. Can you please comment? Thanks!
@SugarcreekForge
@SugarcreekForge 9 лет назад
+taiden You are very welcome. I forge welded the tool steel to the wrought iron and then ground it. The cutting edge is ground down to the tool steel on both sides (a little hard to see in the video). The wrought iron cannot be hardened so that is why it has a tool steel bit.

Hi Sam - It can be tough to find. I found some recently on Ebay. If you look there, you will have to wade through a lot of items that people claim is wrought iron to find the real stuff.

don't the Japanese make their blades with that folding technique? or is that only with their katanas and shortswords?

+The Toast Hi Buddy - Yes they certainly do on many types of knives and swords. I was using a common technique they use as well. I forge welded a hard steel bit to a soft steel core.

I'm curious to how the steel stayed so hot on an anvil outside in the snow. Did you heat your anvil?
@SugarcreekForge

Hi Chris - the surface of the anvil heats up as I hammer hot steel onto it. It did cool a little bit faster on cold days outside. I am glad to be forging inside a warm shop now.
