I have Portuguese ancestors, but I am from the United States. When I was a child, my father would talk about the Portuguese with pride and admiration, going in depth about the discoveries of Portugal and how they changed the history of the world. My father passed when I was 12, but I always had a fascination of my ancestors and their feats. Your videos go so in depth of the specifics, and I thank you for your research and efforts in making these documentaries.
Christian I'm really happy that you liked my videos so much. Thank you for the awesome comments and sharing your story about your father. Portugal did the impossible here
I'm Puerto Rican, but me grandfather on Dad's side was also Portuguese, from Oporto. I also grew up on legends of Portuguese greatness, seamanship and ultimate betrayal by the Spanish, who clipped Portugals empire in favor of their own after the unification of the crowns in the 1580s, embedding the Portuguese to fight Spains losing wars against its former ally, England. It broke Portugals Empire and spirit.... Funny though, my Grandma from Mom's side is of Norwegian descent, and I grew up hearing from her Norwegian sea legends, from Snori, the first European born in the Americas (Greenland), the voyages of Eric the Red... The Norse, another of Europe's great discoverers and sea people. ✌️
@@pupysb6267 I've been debating about doing an age of discovery series and including the Scandinavian countries - they were most likely the first to make it to N America after all
Wow. These guys were super aggressive! How does one king have so much power? Ordering the Planet around, taking lives , stealing riches? I'm exhausted. 😮
Please hurry with the rest of this series! we love it so much, we know this is hard to produce but understand that no one else has this content about Portugal.
I'm a catholic ( Syro- Malabar Eastern Catholic) which used to be nestorians mentioned in the video. It really is great to watch this video sitting from my home in Calicut. An interesting fact; the kingdoms in Kerala ( state which includes Calicut, Cochin,Kannoor and Kollam) used to have a matrilineal dynasty. More specifically, the heir to the throne is always the king's sister's son, ie, his nephew. Hence the reason the nephew's of kings keep popping in the video.
@@_Azurael_No, the Sambandham system practiced by the Nair caste meant that there was no paternity certainty for the children born in such unions. So a Nair male, including the king, would adopt his sister's son as his heir because the nephew was definitely of his bloodline.
@@FlashPointHx I just binged your 'age of discovery' series and loved it, can't tell why but i like your style much more than history marche's, kings and generals and invicta, thank you.
What amazes most about the way the Portuguese built their empire is that it was carefully planned and executed. It wasn't like Columbus' harebrained plan of sailing West and see what happens. Columbus got lucky ; the Portuguese gathered decade upon decade of knowledge until they got the prize.
@@Janika-xj2bv yeah well said - this was a trade empire that was built on capturing and holding key locations that would in turn control everything else - needed a lot of strategic planning
@@siimplykittxie8469 Indeed. There's a theory saying he WAS Portuguese, our man in the Spanish Court, with a mission to misdirect Spain on a wild goose chase, sailing West, as a distraction.
simplified language and colourful animation is amazing. I Was very enthusiastic about history of my country. Now i am bed ridden patient in hospital for a week. I am watching this channel day and ni8. Keep it up.
Not to insult my history teachers, or those who wrote the history books from when I was in school, but these 2 videos alone were sooooooooooooooooo much more effective on teaching me my own country history (from that period) then the school books or the teachers ever did, and on top that these videos are super entertaining and oh sooo well narrated. This is truly valuable stuff, I hope it gest translated to Portuguese (of Portugal hopefully) so not only the kids, but every Portuguese in general can learn our history, in a less "glorified" way, because truth be told, there's almost as much to be proud of as there is to be ashamed of. Anyway, amazing stuff, I truly have no words, congrats to all involved.
Thank you so much for such an awesome comment! I've been approached by two people who would be interested in translating into Portuguese - but it would be a lot of work. It may take a bit of time to produce. Again, thanks !
Amazing job, loved it! Can't wait for part 3! 😁 Netflix should really make a movie about these Portuguese heroic battles and their untold maritime adventures.
Just watched it fully! This is epic! What an amazing video you did! The battle for Cochin would make such an epic movie! So impressed by this documentary! I watched the 1st part also, this one was even better! Congrats, can't wait for the sieges of Diu!
Thank you for these videos, I know the time and work and research that takes to create this!!! Thank you for helping to share our history and to the world. Being such a small country I think it’s extraordinary how much we impacted the world. Greetings from Portugal!!
Kudos for the exceptional documentaries! I'm a new fan of your channel! I'm an Indonesian, particularly of Moluccan descent with Portuguese ancestry. I wonder whether your channel will continue the series when Afonso de Albuquerque continues his Portuguese voyage to Southeast Asia for the exotic spices here. There are plenty of Portuguese forts that still stand strong in some Indonesian islands. We also have hundreds of loan words from the Portuguese language incorporated into Bahasa Indonesia. Even presently in Timor Leste (now a sovereign country on the east of Indonesia), the Portuguese heritage remains strong. I bet it's going to be thrilling to watch such a historical documentary.
Indeed huge legacy in some parts of Indonesia. I was in Flores/indonesia recently (portuguese name (also adopted by indonesia) for flowers) and met many with Portuguese surnames and likely Portuguese ancestry. They take great pride in this distant connection, yet there’s a common misconception by foreigners that they are south americans who migrated to Indonesia.
Thanks for your amazing work. You’re one of the best if not the best in RU-vid doing videos about my beloved country. A small country with such rich history. He had lots of conquests and brave battles to make videos. Thanks a lot.
Good work. Congratulations. Without wanting to monopolize, I suggest a look at the battle of Diu with Francisco de Almeida and the battles of Hormuz and Malacca by Afonso de Albuquerque, authentic works of art of military strategy from that time.
@@FlashPointHx It reminded me of this other quote: "Following the god Neptune, The first ruler of all that is sea Was Manuel I, Portuguese king." - Rainer Daehnhardt.
How’s this guy Duarte Pereira not known as one of the greatest battle minds ever? That battle was impossible, it was insane, and he pulled it off brilliantly.
It was an informative and wonderful historical coverage video about Portuguese (Armada) around African 🌍 content shores , on Indian 🇮🇳 Ocean surface ,and around Indian peninsula shores.. Portuguese 🇵🇹 Armada trade activities ,concurred flourish costs , expelling Muslims ☪️ traded, threatened others... So Portuguese was a top dog in its glory and shiny times ( 1500 AD forward ...thank you 🙏( flash point history )channel for sharing.
RU-vid is far much better than school, they taught us Vasco Da Gama but i never picked much from the leasons, Here I'm hooked on the stories presented in an Entertaining way
Nicely made series. Showing in depth research, good animation and very nice voice over. Good job team. Plz also put up a content table in comment section with dates so we can follow the series without missing anything.
@@FlashPointHx I do not think it is a small country. Roman Empire started from Etruria and Latium villages. Thank you, once again. For such great work I have been following should be seen to grow knowledge and understand the Western culture.
@@FlashPointHxwe had the right people at the right place at the right time. Much like other meteoric rises, like Alexander, or the Fath, or Gengis Khan’s empire.
Your video is outstanding and your depiction of the Battle of Cochin awesome. What a tribute to the memory of the valliant and noble DPP. Can't get tired of watching it over and over again!
@@Geraldo_Sem_Pavor the video on Almeida is out if you’re interested and I’m about to release another video in this series come Monday - happy that you liked it
There are many great historical channels on RU-vid, but this is very special. It may be due to a more profound presentation combining science and art. Keep up the excellent work, and thank you for bringing to light some lesser-known episodes from the past.
Thank you for this, I really needed an escape today. I just went to patreon and realized I never updated my card on there so here's some back pay 😅. Thanks for many past hours of education and entertainment and the many future hours I'm sure are to come
This era of Portuguese history is fascinating. There is a publisher in Portugal which has been dropping new editions of king's biographies. The Aviz ones are very good, João II and Manuel are out (João I and Duarte also), and Sebastião is in pre sale. Hopefully João III and Afonso V will come soon, to complete my collection.
Sometimes i think i have been born in the wrong time. My blood boiling for the miss of some purpose bigger than life itself, like my ancestors had: travel on the unknow and fight for the king. Regards from Portugal.
Well...Part 2 just as good, if not better than Part 1. Nicely done, turning the History into "Educational Entertainment". I learned SO much about the Battle of Cochin, I didn't know how strategic the Portuguese were - I used to think it was mostly..."Divine Intervention". So enjoyed UR work, that subscribing was a must. Thx for UR time, talents & effort. 🙏✨
Fun fact: here in Brazil we have a football team that is in honor of Vasco Da Gama, the team have the same name as the navigator, they won the Brazilian league 4 times, the Brazilian cup 1 time and the Copa libertadores, the biggest throphy in the continent 1 time in 1998, right now they are in bad situation they were relegeated 4 times and disputed the Second division 5 times, now they played in the first division but they were fighting against the releagation in the last season
@@danielguerrero894it’s an old rumor that we already knew about Brasil at the time of the Treaty of Tordesilhas, since we were weirdly insistent on moving the boundary further west than the proposed line. But that might have been to secure the equatorial route we used to sail up and down Africa. We’ll probably never know, since a lot of the relevant documentation went up in smoke in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755.

@@davinfreeman1 Спасибо. У нас вполне хорошо относятся к простым американцам и не испытывают к вам никакой вражды, это я вам могу сказать со всей уверенностью)
Is Vasco da Gama the GOAT admiral? He heard that 150 ships are coming to attack so he quickly attacks first and destroys everything... Multiple times and after getting away by a hair thread from his death? WTF? GOAT 🐐
Indeed, super lucky at times. But the courage is unbelievable 🤣 these stories, these battles... It's hard sometimes to believe these men actually existed and they were of steel pretty much
Just need to make part 3, from part 2 to 1581 Part 4 from 1581 to 1668 Part 5 from 1668 to 1808 Part 6 from 1808 to 1851 Part 7 from 1851 to 1975 and 1999, 2002.
Think about it seriously, if you plan well many Portuguese will sponsor you. But you have to work your communication reach the public. The series should be about the longest European colonial empire, not so much about history. Cheers. @@FlashPointHx
@@bethmarriott9292Don't confuse the Portuguese with the British, the Portuguese use spices in their food (e.g. cinnamon in their desserts, peri-peri in their chicken, etc.).
Little confused, is this a compilation of all 6 of the previous videos played back to back to back. Just don't want to miss out on anything. I was in Kochi and Kerala this year so very cool to visualize what happened on the ground I once walked an seas near it. Still a lot of Portuguese presence there like old churches and a large Catholic population, plus random walls and buildings or ruins you can tell are old Portuguese stone that are hundreds of years old.
Yes - when I get to a major mile stone, I combine all the videos together into compilation videos. Some people really like the longer format. Its almost like an audiobook. If you're worried about missing out. Go to my YT home page and hit the 'Playlist' section. All the videos in all my series are arranged in order.
@@FlashPointHx I love them all and watch them multiple times and share them among Portuguese folks that don't even know their legacy. Thank you so much for this, I wish you could be the director of a hollywood movie portraying these adventurous and treacherous times.
@@FlashPointHx Some time ago I saw a doc. from Timelane (I think) on this topic, where Portuguese researchers and other nations present their strengths about the possibility of being Portuguese. If you're interested, you can find it here on RU-vid under the name "The Columbus Enigma". It's interesting to say the least. Abraço.
This puts into perspective what happens in my number-based early-modern economy simulator whenever I send expeditions abroad from Europe. Then again, playing an early-modern economy simulator is not for those who aim for moral purity...
