I make knives and was looking for an overview on forging chisels so I can make my own as well, very nicely presented! I am curious, 1095 isn't super pricey, why not use it for the entire body? I don't know the first thing about chisels though, is there an advantage to having most of the body made from mild steel?
@rigoniironworks
@rigoniironworks 2 года назад
No, you're right, a solid body is easier to forge. I wanted to forge a traditional chisel, so high carbon onto a mild body. It was a pain, the high carbon caused massive warping. I could also never get the back flat enough, so the project was shelved.
@sirmontag

@@rigoniironworks - Ah, so that's how it was done historically? Sweet! That makes sense, I imagine good steel was in short supply. Forge welding is a tricky business, especially with dissimilar metals.
