In the RU-vid automotive world, it doesn't get any better than Derek! This guy is a genuinely hard working, old-school mechanic with down home values! He may add a little corn for entertainment, but he's 100% authentic! And if you watch his stuff, not only will you have a good time, get a few laughs, but you will learn a thing or two about cars that are slowly going away. Many mechanics these days won't work on a carburetor, they don't know how to set points, and they are slowly forgetting what a timing light is. It's fun to work on these cars! It reminds me of better days, sitting in the garage with my pop working on his El Camino or my mom's Oldsmobile. By the time I was in highschool I could do all the basic maintenance on top of change all the fluids, change and rotate tires, do full tune ups - plugs, wires, belts, oil, even blades! I could rebuild a carburetor just sitting at the kitchen table. Damn those were good times! Thanks Derek! You're content is unmatched! 👍🙂❤️

As soon as you showed the trailer hitch I said to myself "blowing smoke and no compression from the rear cylinder". My dad kept buying these Ford station wagons in the '70s with a big V8 engines to tow a pop up trailer and about 8 kids from central Florida to the California desert and back again for summer vacation. Every time when he'd get back it would have a rough idle and blowing smoke. He didn't know anything about cars so he would blame me for ruining his beautiful car simply by pointing these things out to him. The good thing was I could always keep it running somehow, usually by changing the rear plugs or cleaning the points. I was surprised when you started driving it back without changing the exhaust manifold gasket or at least draining the old gas out of the tank. I would have been pulled over at least 5 times for noise and smoke violations. Great videos.

I had an old 460 in my 1979 f250. That thing would pass everything but a gas station. Keep up the awesome posts and we will be watching.

I had this identical car from 1975-1984. The ride in this bad boy is unbelievably comfortable. It was sort of like driving a waterbed. A true land yacht.

That car sat 32yrs, I am impressed everything held up so well. My grandparents had a 1973 LTD 351w and they drove it from new until around 1990 also.

I've got to be honest here. I appreciate DB is ambitious and wants to do the right thing by his family, hence the direction the channel is taking these days , but the back from the grave, run and drive videos are what I started watching VGG for back yonder. Keep 'em coming.

This was the first VGG video I watched. Got totally hooked after this one. Since then, I have watched pretty much all the rest of them! Good way to spend the winter.

We had a 77 Merc just like this. Unlimited recalls on that car. Got a whopping 12 miles to the gallon. But it rode like a dream.

The tire smoke leaking through the headliner during the burnout was particularly funny to me lol

I love this guy and he knows that a 1972 460 plant will fire up and run fine. Big C-6 transmission, 9.3/8"rear, solid automobile. The car is designed for long-distance reliability. In comfort! I still think about a 1971 Continental that a client sold to me for $ 1 dollar. Evicted the ground-chucks, and drove it for a year. I'm 60yrs and live in Michigan, can't find them anymore. That engine & transmission went on to power a "74" Gran Torino and then a "good" Cobra replica. Nice Mercury, good job. J.

I owned a1969 Mercury Marquis. Best two block long, ten ton tank of a car ever. Got 6 gallons to the mile and had a 1/4 mile time of 2 days. Get that pile of steel up past 50 mph and then floor it. Absolute terror and joy as you wondered if your car and health insurance were payed up.

My husband and I love your channel Derek. My husband never misses a video you put out. No matter what he's doing he has to put your channel on. He loves what you do and the way you do it and the reasons you do it. He always says... There should be more fellas in this world like this fella. He always ends his comments with... keep On Motoring Brother. Because you remind him of his younger brother that passed away last year. His brother watched your channel as well. They were very close brothers. Either one of them would have done whatever it takes to help the other. I didn't know his brother that well. But what I did know of him. I love the white letter tires especially when you use the old school mag wheels just the white letter tires still look good on anything in my opinion a lot of people think they have to modernize these old vehicles when they shouldn't in my opinion leaving it all original and just beef it up a little is the best

I ALWAYS look forward to the part of your rescue missions where you describe the smell when you open the door. It's never gonna smell like nothing; ALWAYS gonna smell like something, and it's ALWAYS gonna be pungent. They are never the same, totally random combinations, and hilarious.

Someone probably already said it: the transmission modulator valve (right rear above the pan) has a rubber diaphragm that will get old and the engine will suck up the fluid through a vacuum line behind the carb 😅. Love that old Mercury - would buy it myself if I was in the country :)😊. Btw, those windows motors, if I remember right 😅, have some plastic dowel pins that fall apart and are super cheap to replace

That mercury grand marquis is great...1972!!! I was born in 1974 my dad had 3 cars...great cars...he had a 1979 Ford fare lane...a 1975 beatle...and a 1977 Ford pickup.

I started watching when the ol blue 79 Camaro revival came out. I was laying in a hospital bed and it popped up on my feed and 78-81 Camaros are my favorite. It looked like Coffee runnin`thru that Gasfilter. The Sound of that thing is great. Like an old dinasour.

The one thing I remember most about cars like that is four or five people piling into them at night going home from a Christmas party. It would be really cold and everybody would jump in and you'd start the engine and take about 10 miles for the heat to get going but then it just rode like a cloud all the way home and if you were a kid the car was so big you had plenty of room to goof around it was almost like being at home, those big Lincolns and Cadillacs and Chryslers they were truly a special type of car back in those days.

I had a bit of an anxiety attack at first, thinking this may have been the exact same car I had in 1983-1987. Close, but not quite as mine had the 429. Still, it's so nice to see the old girl again and it brings back so many memories and "firsts" I had in that car as a 19 year old man,... Thanks Derek. This one is my favorite!

Been watching the reboot of Hawaii Five O, and this was the car McGarret's dad drove. Wish I had a driver's license, drove, and had the money. I'd fly to you, buy it from you, and go on my first road trip back home with it. 😅 If you ever have issues with smoke in cars, I learned this from my aunt (my uncle smoked cigars): Wipe the seats and other soft interior surfaces with dryer sheets. Put coffee grounds in some cheese cloth, tie it off, and toss the bags you made onto the dash and in the back window. Cinnamon oil also helps. Leave a few tablespoons overnight in a travel mug in the cup holder.

Hopefully there's a part 2 I'm curious what actually failed with the motor.
