Japan has a weird thing for abbreviating "Psychokenesis" into "Psycho", not knowing it means Psychopath in English. Its the reason the game Psycho World was renamed Psychic World when Sega released it on the Master System.

FYI The game's story is from the creator of Moon Remix RPG Adventure (and founder of Love-de-Lic), and Marino Nishizaki did the character illust for this game. If this game could've have been released in the west under the Dream Probe title, judging by the reviews and coverage, people would forget it. The music is composed by Michiko Naruke who would later do the music of the Wild Arms series. I remember playing this game on an SNES emulator on PSP back in the day. Edit: 4:08 This game got an english patch recently by Stardust Crusaders.

I want a framed playthrough of this game hanging on a wall in my house. Like, just a screen with a full playthrough on a loop, like a moving painting, bombarding people with all that insane imagery. The only other game I've had that idea about is Monster Party.

I recently played through this one. He's right. You pretty much spam attacks the whole game. It doesn't take long to get fully powered if you get hit three times, either. Some of the passageways are frustratingly slow-going and overly repetitive, but overall I enjoyed this game more than some of the Valis games, so it's still worth a go.

Them review scores were brutal....18/40? Yeesh! Always thought Famitsu gave pretty generous scores, reading about the various game scores throughout the years..but wow...18. Game doesn't look too bad to me...the OP fairy looks fun enough.

I started up this game recently on switch and thought it was an rpg from the title screen. I was taken off guard immediately upon opening the game but I think it kind of helped set the tone of all the crazy weird creativeness in it for me. I've only gotten through the second boss so far and had to look up what was going on with the plot. I expected to find a back of the cereal box lazy description to justify putting all of these cool ideas in, but I found this video and I actually really really love the plot. Really happy I found this and I am extremely appreciative of the lack of late game spoilers.

With a title like this i was expecting something like LSD dream simulator. But honestly the action platformer themes suits the name quite well, you can have basically any boss design you wanted!!

Ah, yes. Katerina Witt is synonymous with invulnerability. Those references were amusing and the review was great as usual. I remember seeing Psycho Dream in another SNESdrunk video, among other games. It always intrigued me and I had been meaning to look into it some more. I always liked the visuals of it. And this review here makes it sound like it might be fun for me. The difficulty balance may be an issue. But it looks and sounds great to me. It's a funny thing, especially with the SNES, how many of what are considered its best games do nothing for me, but some games that are not the best of their type appeal to me. For example, I didn't think I'd like the Super Famicom Mazinger Z game, but I tried it anyway. While it has issues, I had a lot of fun with it and am glad I gave it a shot. Same goes for Super Valis 4. So this one looks like I should give it a shot any way I can.

Having finally added this game to my collection after becoming a fan of the Valis games I can sayit's immediately apparent that the developers of the Valis games made this. The character sprites and animation especially. If you adjust your expectation to match the Valis games for the PC Engine you'll probably enjoy this game just fine. On top of that the art design in this game is pretty imaginative.

Just played through the game from Nintendo switch online and wow what an experience! Art style was absolutely crazy and the ost is on a whole different level. Definitely picked it up on a whim, but I’m so glad that I did :)

I love that you always point out how games should be appreciated on their own merits, and thus compared with similar level games in their respective genres. This game is upper middle of the road on the console for action platformers, but a good game nonetheless.

I like what you said about not expecting EVERY game to be as good as the best games in the genre. I feel that we have a lot of games out there with good stories that eneded in cliffhangers but we never got to find out what happens because people found one or two "not perfect" thing in the gameplay, so we never got the sequel that would give us closure. Such as: Star Wars the Force Unleashed, COD Ghosts, Megaman 64, just to name a few.

Super Play was an awesome independent super Nintendo game magazine, but it doesn't get mentioned much these days. Nice to hear you reference it 👍

This is one of those rare games that ended up more like an interactive work of art (or active wallpaper for your computer/tv) rather than a traditionally "good" "game". It can be appreciated as a work of art with the right mentality (i.e. focus on the visuals and sound and less of an interest in checking the usual boxes for a good video game). I might just keep a longplay of it on loop in the background if I'm feeling particularly creative for writing or drawing.

I'm glad this hidden gem was released for Switch Online. But I'm not sure I've ever played a game where the gulf between the final boss and the rest of the game is so massive. I plowed through the rest of the game in like a half-hour. Then I was stuck on the final boss for more time than the rest of the game.

The stages and everything that appears in this game are distorted images of feelings and things passing through a common Japanese female high school student's mind. The fear for insects, the theme park, the subway, the cherry blossoms, etc... This is also why I love this game, it's very profound.

Remember how everyone in the 90's thought that Virtual Reality was going to be the wave of the future, and it just kinda petered out until like the last decade or so?

This brings back some memories. I used to play this on an emulator and show my friends because I thought it was really weird, and this one kid just freaked out when he saw the game screaming it was cursed and started crying about the music being too scary until his mom came to get him. A real wtf moment.

This just came out for Nintendo Switch Online. I tried it without ever having heard of it. I selected a character I couldn't see, there was a long opening credits sequence over the Tokyo skyline, and then I was on a road facing down bad watermelon slices. I guess I should have known.

Fun fact, this game's director, Kenichi Nishi, is the same guy who directed the first Chibi Robo and all of Lovedelic's games.

One of my favorite SNES games, I own the cart and absolutely love it I can't believe it was so underrated when it came out even in Japan, just sad

When I find out about a game like this, it's a reminder of how much I don't know about the SNES/Super Famicom library. I have a feeling I would've loved this game as a kid, but it's too bad the game reviewers shut it down so harshly. It wouldn't be the first time they were wrong though.

Ave Maria on SNES-synth? I didn't know I wanted that.

I bet a lot of you people didn't know this but maybe some have but when you kill a enemy and it gives you a yellow gem don't touch it until you see it turn it blue and this can be done with both characters. With the male character it gives you a bionic arm and if you would use a blue gem again it gives you a tri shot. With the female character she gets a gun which is kind of the same thing as the male character but you can also get a triple shot. It's a kind of cool secret feature but you can only get it and upgrade it once so it is kind of short-lived. Also yes I did take another comments idea but if you press L and X at the same time it will instantly kill you.

Music reminds me of bands like Tony Danza and old The Northern (CA). Love it.

Agreed about the gameplay, it's not horrible but nothing amazing either. The appeal is in the crazy artwork and music. I really got into the artist who did the character models and story for this game, Nishizaki Marino, and found a bunch of his other work. I also made a video showing some of his other comics. If you search his name or go really far back on my channel you can find it.

I remember this game getting a mention on México’s official Nintendo magazine. But apparently the story was changed for western release? I remember reading that in the western version, the girl was connected to a machine that make “dreams real” (then they joked about the person having lots of nightmares after having a big dinner).

Just finished my second playthrough for RetroAchievements! After starting with hard mode normal is such a piece of cake! This game is a ton of fun even though this genre isn't usually what I'm into. Could really benefit from an autofire/turbo button though you're gonna be spamming balls if you're playing as Maria
