It's worth mentioning that the PAL version has a much more linear level progression. Where the Japanese version had hidden exits similar to Super Mario World which take the player to different (hidden) levels, the PAL version sees the player move from level to level in a totally linear order. A baffling change...
Fun game, thanks for covering it! My wife and I got the SFC version and figured out we could use the weird way co-op is set up to turn one player into a checkpoint while the other player tried tricky sections of levels.
There is a way to play TwinBee Rainbow Bell Adventure in North America, but you have to get the Data Frog SF2000 handheld game console to be able to play it here.
This game was awesome, even the PAL version was lots of fun. Playing it as a child back then, I didn't know it was stripped down tho o.O if that's true then I wonder why they'd do that... maybe they thought it would be to confusing for europeans...?
What is this game you ask? A fun Twinbee platformer, the Japanese version is better than the PAL version due to it not being linear, and no story elements cut out. Aeon Genesis also translated the Japanese version, so it can be played in English, and is non-linear like the Japanese version. Bought the Japanese version a couple years ago, was pretty cheap too, cheaper than Pop N Twinbee, which I also have in Japanese format.
and of course The Guardian Legend the NES classic by Compile (Aleste, Zanac, MUSHA, other shmups) did the two genres thing with its Zelda levels and shooter levels, I think it had both side scrolling and vertical. those games in the early 90s that took chances with combining these two disparate game genres were cool, ActRaiser comes to mind with the city building + side scrolling action levels. any other of these two-style early 90s games come to mind?
wait a second..The reason for the devs to take the game into a radically different genre is because the game is really good? lol interesting analysis there. I wish more devs could see the future before making big changed to a franchise :P
I own this game I play it once a year. I'd say it's not as good as this video says it's a 6.5/10 I do own the SFC version. the boss battles as stated are actually way too easy. especially if you are gwinbee.
