It certainly is widely known these days. I'm not sure how old the anime of the game's setting is but I know it took a long time until the popular manga series got adapted into anime. The mangas started in the 80s I think. The last anime shows of it I watched were set in early 90s Japan and Italy but were made not too many years ago. The prison centered one must be finished but I don't know if the following one has yet been aired.

The Dragon Ball Z RPG was a really interesting game for its time, and I still really appreciate some of things it did. It's an extremely faithful retelling of the story up to Freeza that allows the player the chance to alter history: (It's been almost twenty years since I've played it, but if I recall correctly...) You can keep characters like Yamcha alive and playable all the way through Namek if you train them enough to not die in the battles they canonically did, which can make the game easier. On the other hand, allowing characters to die when they are supposed to unlocks cutscenes, special dialogue, and occasionally special powers for your existing characters. It gives the game a replayability many RPGs lack, and fans of the show should enjoy getting to monkey with the continuity if they so desire. Lastly, while I think you're right on the graphics being pretty "rough", I feel that's more than compensated for by how well animated it is, and the attention to detail the devs had for all the shows little quirks. You can walk or fly on the map. If you "sprint" while flying, you're surrounded by energy. Neat! But it's really all about the random battles. The game is a grindfest, with little else to do but run through random encounters until you feel sufficiently powerful enough to tackle the boss of the area, (for better or worse this is very accurate to the source material) but thankfully random battles are actually pretty fun to mess around in thanks to the animation and character details. Every single character has multiple special moves taken from the show, all nicely animated, and occasionally with cartoony cutscenes, and even regular attacks are diverse: The power of the card you choose affects the animation of the attack, from flurries of punches or kicks to piledriving downward blows and kicks up into the air. The animation also changes depending on your relative power level: Fight someone much stronger than you and they won't even flinch as you strike them. Fight someone much weaker and you can punch them across the screen, triggering cutscenes where you knock them through mountains or pound them into the dirt, complete with explosion and crater. Fight over water and you instead knock them into the drink. Turn-based RPGs just didn't have attack animations anything close to this at the time, and heck, they still don't! Whatever the game lacks in substance -- and it may lack quite a lot -- it makes up for in style to spare. Kinda like the show itself. Not for non-fans, but if you love DBZ, or at least have memories of loving it once, long ago when you were young, I think it's absolutely worth a play.
@freespace2dotcom
@freespace2dotcom 7 лет назад
I learned how to read kana on that game. It's so dear to my heart, I have a physical copy. If you know DBZ's story by heart, Then learning some Japanese is also possible. (a dictionary would help though)
@dmas7749
@dmas7749 5 лет назад
the permadeath is a pretty neat thing in that game allowing you to keep everyone alive with careful play or staying true to the story and flying is nice too but Attack of the Saiyans is a much better Dragon Ball RPG, with faster animations, combination techs, or ultimate techs, completable start to finish without grinding, and has more than one battle track (as much as i like it that song wears out its welcome well by Namek).

Remember playing this on emulator around 2000 and finding it crappy at first. Cards? What the hell is this? But after many restarts and trail and error I finally got the basics of how to play it and it became rather fun. Especially when I knew a boss was coming up to stack nothing but 6 and Z cards. Did SNES cover the Goku Den games? I thought those were freaking fantastic once you got a hold of how it works.

It’s actually a continuation of the NES Dragon Ball RPGs and they are those licensed games that aren’t very good, but a lot of people played them. Think of games from the early 2000s based off Pixar movies.

The Dragon Ball Z game was also a remake and combination of two of the NES games so that's why the graphics aren't so hot. It's only slightly redrawn and re-shaded from its 8-bit counterparts.

Great to see you cover Rama~XDD its a fun game really. if you live in Asia in the 90's, Rama is so famous especially in Japan that no need to explain why and how its more like a continuation of the anime. Sad that kids after that era dont see Rama the way we old ppl sees it.

Really cool video. I’m a fan of Sailor Moon and I enjoyed how the game combined enemies from all three first seasons (and movies) in a way that kind of makes sense. For fans of the show, it gives you a brief glimpse of Queen Beryl before going corrupt, something that the anime never showed. Gameplay-wise, it was nice to be able to discover special attack combinations between two or three se senshis, and some combinations were never showed before in the anime or manga. Thank you for a great video, once again.

It's funny hearing you say the Sailor Moon game is hard. For anyone interested in playing it, use Mercury every chance you get if you want the game on easy mode. Use her Bubbles Blast attack and no matter who the enemy is- random battle, boss, even final boss- they can't do more than 2-6 points of damage anymore.

I mean, coming of age tale about a guy who rolls around in tanks with his buddies in a post apocalyptic world (with familiar but fairly unique RPG mechanics), how could you go wrong?

I adored the 'Magic Knight Rayearth' game as a child and it was one of the first RPGs I played from start to finish...without realizing there were two endings to the game. Before playing it, the only thing from CLAMP that I was aware of was Cardcaptors and had no idea of their other series like MKR or Tsubasa Reservoir. I definitely agree that the game was kind of simplistic, but all of the powers, Guardian Spirits and the story really sucked me in - especially the ending as I hadn't played a game before that that had a Pyrrhic victory as an ending. Sailor Moon: Another Story was a very welcome surprise when I discovered it as I was a fan of the show and I totally agree with all the points you made in your video!

Ages ago, my sister actually played through the Sailor Moon game (emulated, of course). She took the time to grind until everyone on her party was max level. She was somewhat upset with how easy the final boss ended up being. :P Yes, my sister can be quite hardcore. I remember playing through that DBZ game, I didn't think it was horrible besides the looks, but then, again, that was a long time ago. I don't think it would hold my attention that much nowadays. As for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, I'm kinda surprised to learn that this game exists. First time I heard of the series was with that Capcom fighting game (itself based on the third Jojo series, Stardust Crusaders, just like this RPG). As for your channel, I discovered it recently and already got through quite a lot of your videos. :) Keep it up! Keep'em coming! ;)

Honestly, If you want to play a JoJo turn-based JRPG, I'd recommend The Seventh Stand User. It's an RPG maker game, where you make your own character and join the Stardust Crusaders to defeat Dio. A personaly test determines which one of the 18 availible Stands you get, and with multiple endings and many easter eggs, makes it a terrific Jojo experience.

This is a pretty interesting video series. Kudos on the encyclopedic format and knowledge for each one of them. It turns your work into great "bookshelf" material for future reference. I hope there's a part 6 in the works; it'd be fun to know about two of the Nintendo Japan Only RPG series (at the SFC time at least): Fire Emblem (IV is incredible and one of the franchise's best) and Famicom Wars (the prequels to the cult series Advance Wars). I just found your channel and been enjoying your videos so far. Keep up the good work.

Lodoss Wars started as a DnD campaign popularized in the media with novelizations and quite successfully so. This RPG covers parts of that pre-anime story. The anime is a sequel to those original DnD campaigns. There is now also a newish metroidvania indie game in the Lodoss Wars universe but based more on the anime characters and play as the elf waifu. It's decent if you like these games but apparently quite short.

The Dragon Ball RPG series already started on the NES/Family Computer (Famicom was a sharp oven lol) and I think it was decently popular in Japan. Not sure if they all already got translated but some were. Also, 92 wasn't super early anymore in Japan, which got the SNES/Super Famicom (this time, they could use the common abbreviation officially) in 1990...while we Europeans only got it in 92. I get what you mean with early-ish, they certainly didn't put much effort in the graphics and likely didn't have the technical experience for it then.

Sailor moon another story is broken af. Theres a code where you can start at level 16 or level 99 during the opening intro crawl, and Pluto and Mercury are broken beyond belief. Mercury's attack that lowers attack is 100% hit rate, even on bosses (and the final boss), and Pluto's time stop is the same way. Final boss is so easy: turn 1 all out attack, with pluto using time stop. Turn 2 pluto restores her MP or whatever while everyone goes all out. Turn 3 time stop while everyone else attacks. The times you cant use pluto, use mercury to lower the bosses attack power. Its a great game, but its easy as hell, outside of each of the inner's side quests at the beginning of the game.

Sailor Moon is the only one I've played and finished. It is hard but you eventually became unstoppable. It's also a good length game. Grinding is made easier on an emulator because you can increase game speed.

Given the context of this old game, it should be specified that the new series is being referenced, not the 1993 OVA.

Could they just make modern day RPG’s for DragonBall and Sailor Moon! These games look awesome and would be better with a fresh coat of paint! Classic Anime > Current Anime

Didn't look through the comments section yet, sorry if I'm parroting anyone; he did sum up Dragon Ball Z (291 episodes in and of it's self) in a much shorter sentence than this one however and that show is the most drawn out thing I have ever watched.
