I've always been a sucker for rouge like. I'm a big fan of the aforementioned Lufia 2 Ancient Cave, but have played the DS remake of Shiren The Wanderer which is brutal in it's difficulty. Mystery Dungeon is a subsection of the rogue like developed by Chunsoft, who licences out to companies like Nintendo for Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. If you play a number of Mystery Dungeon games specifically you develop strategies for survival that assist you in future titles. Incidentally one of my favorite rogue like's of all time is Azure Dreams for PS1. It's very similar to a Mystery Dungeon but it's Konami's take on the mystery dungeon format. The mission is to scale a tower connected to your hometown of Monsbaiya and help it grow by using funds from the tower to build shops, librarys and even a casino. You can also collect every monster in the game and level them up to help you get through the tower, and you WILL need them to get through the game. You also can have up to 7 girlfriends that you can seduce through story progression and item collection in the tower. There is also a Game Boy version that isn't a carbon copy of the PS1 version. If you're a fan of rouge likes and mystery dungeons check out Azure Dreams.

@JetWolfEX
@JetWolfEX 5 лет назад
Cool to see people talking about Azure dreams, I got a PS1 copy recently, never played it before. It looks like it has a lot of similarities with mystery dungeon, great game so far, it's also quite tough, I keep having bad luck with random traps and hordes of enemies, the monster breeding mechanic is one of it's best aspects.
@MegaHarv
@MegaHarv 5 лет назад
You can attack traps and disarm them, but it's very time consuming to do that in every room. I always hated the Rust Traps, but to counter them you can equip a Gold Sword because they don't rust. Same deal with the Shields. Ideally you want a Diamond Shield since it's base defense is 7 but you could use a Wood Shield in a pinch. The hard part in this game is keeping your monsters fed since you pretty much need a high level monster to get to the top unless your exceptional at running away.
@JetWolfEX

Thanks for the advice, I've just been keeping a backup sword and sheild, I've noticed knowing when to run or escape to town is an important part of the game.
@dreamweaver5803

This game taught me what a roguelike is, and now I have a bunch of them on steam. I really got into it a couple years ago and was able to beat the first main adventure. That storage room was a critical piece to my success, in combination with the blacksmith in that town who will merge weapons and shields for you.

It is always really nice when someone takes the time to put together a translation for a game that previously did not have one. There are many games that didn't make it out of Japan, and I feel like I can never give enough thanks to the people that have put together these translations over the years. The 5th game in this series was recently ported to Switch and Steam. It's called Shiren the Wanderer: Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate. It's super good and I beat it four days after getting it (to my surprise). There are also efforts to translate a number of the other games. There is a community working on the N64 version and I saw someone also working on the 4th game in the series. Too bad it's so underrated here in the West.
@alexanderb7721
@alexanderb7721 Год назад
A lot has happened since I posted this comment. Shiren 2 (on N64) has been translated, the spinoff game, Asuka the Wanderer for the Sega Saturn received a partial introduction for the first major beat of the story, Shiren DS (a DS remake of Shiren GB2) was also recently translated, and Shiren 4 (DS and PSP) has a translation that is currently complete, but unreleased due to bugs that they's trying to work out. After Shiren 4 releases, this will mean that every Shiren game (with the exception of GB1 and some spinoffs) is playable in English.

This game reminds me of Azure Dreams for Playstation. It's a lot of the same of this game. Except you go through a 90 floor monster tower.Within the tower you face randomly generated floors & unique monsters. The key thing is that you can also find monster eggs! Through these eggs you gain faithful monster companions. You can actually FUSE the monsters together to gain better stats on your monsters & different attacks. It's a great game but it's one of the hardest games I've ever played.

Tony C Expect to have to learn a lot of controls and mechanics in Azure dreams. There's a huge town hub with tons of things to do, and some heavy resource management, all good thing for that kind of game imo, just takes a bit of patience. Just finding out where to save took some figuring out. I don't have the manual, that would probably help a ton.

It must have been close to it's DS release, when I bought this game used at GameStop. I had no idea what it was, I just wanted a new game, and this looked interesting. I sometimes play it to this day, yet only the Final Puzzle dungeon. But I must admit, it gets sort of boring if you reach level 50 or so. If you get that far you are usually overpowered, and the enemies that pose a real challenge are far between. Stealing items using the Great Hall Scroll is a good strategi. It's just a shame stealing this way doesn't show on the stats screen. It's also a shame that the Homing Blade does not show up in this dungeon. And I sometimes wish you could meld at least two armbands together. Now I'm possibly gonna buy "Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate" on Switch in the near future...

I've ended up preferring the DS remake/port for one thing no need to patch as it got an official US release and also it has some noticeable quality of life improvements. Downside you can't run two saves to rescue yourself with it unless you use a flash cart with Multisave support as the DS version only allows one save per cart.

Ay, the SFC version of Shiren the wanderer is tough as nail. Amazing game, but I don't think I'll ever crack this nut... Being a point A to Z rogue-like, the ever changing layout is a constant conundrum on this. Am I going to need this scroll? Shall I spare it for a stronger monster? Am I going to be able to level up early enough to face more perilous predicaments? Shall I store this blade away and take it for another run? Shall I travel with a companion? It's practical but if a monster takes him/her out, it's the end of me, no doubt about it. Losing top tier inventory and starting back from square one is always heart wrenching. STW is the rogue-like embodiment of "make do or bust".
@SamuraiSam

I'm a big fan of this game! I've beaten both the SFC version and the DS remake. They changed some stuff in the remake and I don't think one version is clearly better than the other. The one on DS is a little easier, for what it's worth, but still nasty hard. The one on Wii isn't that good, but the one for Vita that got a US release is also worth checking out!

Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon isn't the first rouge like, but it was the first Mystery Dungeon game, which is a variation of the rogue like that isn't generally as punishing as an old fashioned rouge like. There was a game named "Rogue" for PC released in 1980 where the name came from, but even Rogue wasn't the first rouge like game. There were rogue like's documented as early as the 1970's, however the first known game with the standard rogue like elements was a game developed on Apple 2 named "Beneath Apple Manor"

I wouldn't call these games action RPGs. Yeah, the battles don't have a menu like FF or DQ, but they're definitely turn-based. A lot of roguelikes do that, particularly the classic originators of the franchise like, well, Rogue, or Nethack. It's just that every action takes a turn/time unit, and all other creatures on the floor also act when you do. But you can totally pause so you can think about what to do before you take another action.
