Awesome video. I descended from the Riddell family in that area but haven’t been able to find a connection to the wealthier origin branch. My family was apparently known as the “Riddells of Teviotdale” (most notable member being Henry Scott Riddell, poet) and family legend has always been “we were poets and sheep thieves” back in Scotland. Not sure how much is true and how much is exaggerated for a good story but it’s great nonetheless. Again wicked video man, cheers from Hamilton Ontario
Hi x because your ancestors looked after themselves and payed no tax to the crown (why would they) a lot of rubbish to demonise them has been written to justify the awful lowland clearances many centuries ago. Teviotdale is near Hawick a good few miles away, Riddell and Scott are common names in the borders, the history is fascinating, you must come and visit one day give me a shout I’ll show you a few places x
Absolutely fantastic video X The Staircase and Tower were amazing. And I also love how nature is taking over once again, the way those trees are growing through the windows is just great. Thank you so much for climbing up the Tower and putting the drone up as well X Take care and keep finding these amazing places X
Cheers Jenny the spiral staircase made my head spin, such a cosy little room at the top was fantastic to get on another mission in the beautiful countryside, I’m spoiled for locations here in the borders, lovely to hear from yourself Jenny xXx
I didn’t expect the spiral staircase to be so narrow made my head spin had to tie dogs up as I didn’t want them going up they most likely could have the area is so rural would be great living in that tower! Thanks for sharing your thoughts 💭 TWF
I am a Riddle. My ancestry is from Scotland. I live in the US. My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to see Scotland and the Riddell house and hopefully this structure. I can't wait to visit the land in which my DNA originated from.
I'm always in awe of the splendour of nature and how it reclaims the land we build upon. That's an amazing estate and sure it was absolutely breathtaking back in it's glory days. Always admire your drone footage and musical pieces with them my brother. Great share Ian and Happy 2019 to you and yours 😊🍅
Thanks Gil always a pleasure to hear from you the old yew trees in the grounds were amazing, there’s some yews near by in Minto that are 1500 years old I’m looking forward to seeing them. Thank you for your support Gil have a great prosperous new year
I Macey If you have the chance visit my grandpa’s old ancestral home near Kirkinner, Barnbarroch House. It was always said that it’s far from everywhere and close to nowhere. I have not been there in almost a decade and a half. Miss it so much.....
The Riddells had lived there for over 700 years just looking at the layers of different fireplaces in the walls is fascinating, such a shame a fire took the place in 1943, cheers Graham
Cheers Mark it would have been a grand house a good few decades ago, I was pleased to get to go up the tower into the lairds study 📖, best considerations Mark
Grand old estate, have a happy peaceful and prosperous new year I’m looking forward to your next relic hunting adventure still can’t believe you found a 1545 sliver coin, Thank you for being a fantastic supporter to the channel
@@XhristinaMacey ah yes we have started making the second part of the relic hunting video on the school field, but its no fun digging in cold muddy ground, so im guessing it will be ready in spring, i might have another local school to hunt to do which was built in 1850 so the next summer hunt could be even better. (the school im hunting at the moment was only 1970s built) cheers Ian take care
I bet the rubbish drives you insane on a school field? I’d love to hunt with one around some of the lost settlements getting permissions is hard I’m guessing be lucky 🍀 guys ! Look forward to some live digs
“Unchallenged thence passed Deloraine To ancient Riddell’s fair domain, Where Aill, from mountain freed Down from the lakes did raving come Each wave was crested with tawny foam, Like the mane of a chestnut steed.” -Lay of the Last Minstrel
Wonderful adventure. When I heard the growl, I was sure the pups were warning you there was something there! I am sure the gentleman built the tower in order to enjoy the view of his land. How do you think he would respond to the magical views you find for us with your drone? Travel Safe
I’m sure Lt John Sprot would be astonished at flying cameras and RU-vid, the tower is built on an old fort with a dried up mote there’s believed a long lost chapel in the grounds too maybe this is why there are so many magnificent yew trees. eBay has a gold seal that belonged to Lt Sprot rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F382328742472 that’s interesting. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed researching the Riddell estate, always a pleasure to hear from you nanna “””be lucky””””🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
I was in Scotland last year. A local guide took me to Bowden Kirk, close to Melrose. Which has a crypt underneath for Kerrs, as well as stained glass that features names. One name is Sir Thomas Riddell Carre (formerly Ker). He was a famous orator/storyteller of history back in 1800s. Might be a connection?
My name is Kelli riddell I have no family after my grandparents passed riddells would love to find some I've always been told my family originated from Scotland
thank you for watching the video, the Riddell family lived at the estate for well over 700 years, I guarantee your family were related to the estate. you must come and visit one day
I did some digging around and found information that indicates there was a structure here (and lands) going by the name Riddell or Ryedale dating to the 9th century. riddellestate.co.uk/history/ If the writing on the stone at 4:52 is Latin, it's something like "forgive your son." If French, "because he likes (pleases) me"? (google translate)
Sir Walter Scott wrote about the estate it belonged to the Riddell family for over 700 years until sold to the Sprot family around 1870 the tower was built in 1885 also big alterations to the main house took place around that time frame. It’s truly a walk back in time the main house burned down around 1940 when the MOD were in care of the home. Join the FB page “border reiver genealogy,” and ask some questions people there will be more than happy to answer your questions Sean, thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts
Sir Walter Scott wrote about the Riddells occupying this estate house for more than 700 years terrible the estate was sold to a rich Victorian and burned out in the 1920s, thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts 💭 x best wishes
just noticed at around 1.25.. to the left of the door theres an Ordnance Survey spot height marker.. looks like 586 feet above sea level (160 odd meters by modern maps).. sounds about right
yes I noticed this also, its a shame the estate was sold in victorian times out go the Riddell family didnt last much longer and it stood for over 700 years with the Riddells
