I scream for ice cream! Do you? If you do, here’s a special treat for you! I’m Marshall, your ice cream parlor confectioner, and today, we’re opening our vault to give you a taste of what the ice cream scene was like in the 1950s. Spumoni - pistachio, chocolate, cherry. With cherries, nuts and sometimes amaretto cookies mixed in.

I grew up in the late 60's and the 70's. My mom usually bought sealtest ice cream and then she switched to light n lively ice milk. I adored that banana strawberry ice cream. One of the ice cream companies of the time made a very soft and creamy lemon ice cream called lemon chiffon that i also loved. Great memories.

It really is a shame that Sealtest is no longer available! I've seen many ads for it and they really got creative! My family was on a tighter budget back in the day with six kids, so for a while my mom bought Dutch Pride Ice Milk in the squared boxes for our ice cream pleasure!

Back in the day Thrifty Drugs in southern California had an ice cream counter --- Nickle a scoop and they used a cylinder shaped scoop. My favorite flavors were Black Walnut and an incredible coconut vanilla with chunks pineapple and nuts. As others have noted --- back then ice milk was a less costly option to 'real ice cream'. But ---- Publix supermarkets here in the southeast has a fantastic house brand ice cream with many flavors and they sometime feature their own version of Banana Split ice cream in the summer. A flavor that's all but impossible to find? Spumoni. But I've discovered that if you're near a Twistee Treat soft serve (look for the giant ice cream cone shaped building) you can get a half pistachio and half chocolate that is almost as good a a dish of Spumoni. Love your tasty trips down memory lane!!

Publix is a grocery store in the Southern US. There store brand ice cream is creamy goodness. They make all of these flavors. Cherry, Chocolate almond, pistachio almond, and mint chocolate chip, are our favorites.

There was a live children’s tv show that was sponsored by a dairy company. The host was supposed to drink some of the sponsors milk but the stage hands left the milk out under the hot studio lights. It turned sour and when the host tried it, he spit it out and adlibbed that the milk tasted better at home. The stage hands put a refrigerator on set after that and only put the milk out just before the host was ready to do the ads. 😮

I recall that Lady Borden s ice cream was around in the 60s and 70s , the flavor that recall having was French Vanilla. My favorite flavor was Banana Fudge Bordens used to make in Sickles Sadly I don't think they make Bordens Ice Cream anymore, I have not seen any in years.

I miss Angel Food ice cream. The Lorraine Cherry and Burgundy Cherry sound awesome, I love cherry ice cream and the Peach Melba sounded good too. It's sad these flavours are gone.

Tutti Frutti Ice cream. Have heard about this flavor for years but have never seen it in stores or ice cream shops. The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet did a whole episode about this flavor of ice cream.

It's got lots of tiny chunks of candied fruit in it. But they're so small and so candied that there isn't a lot of flavour. A little acidity from some of the fruit, but mostly just sweet. The ice cream itself is a plain, I think vanilla, flavour. You haven't missed out on a ton. It used to be a popular flavour in the UK but I don't recall seeing it for a while. Probably not posh enough looking.

I was quite disappointed with this video for not mentioning Tutti Frutti. I had it when I was a kid in Pittsburgh. And I always remembered the Ozzie and Harriet episode. Eventually I found that episode online. Seeing it again made me want to get some Tutti Frutti. It turned unto the Holy Grail of ice cream searches for me. I looked at all kinds of grocery stores, ice cream stores, restaurants and soda fountains. And I searched extensively online. No luck. I even found some recipes online for making your own at home. But comments on those web pages always had some people saying that the recipe didn't really taste right.

I remember my mom always getting black licorice ice cream at a small town store in Sekiu Washington every summer. Haven't seen it since the 80s.

Lady Borden & Sealtest certainly made a cavalcade of unique ice cream flavors. Although they're no longer around, at least we still have one brand that's just as good, Blue Bunny. 🍨

Blue Bunny is quite good...but not enough cream (fat) content that I desire. What concerns me is the replacement of sugar with corn syrup in ice cream...let alone the reduction of milk/cream content that some brands are NOT allowed to be labelled as ice cream and they are called "dairy dessert" or some other name ... look to how your choice is labelled. If what you buy does not say "ice cream" it's because it is NOT. Haggen Dazs, Baskin Robbins, etc. no longer seem to use sugar and I DO notice the taste difference...not going to buy ANY ice cream that uses corn syrup....look to how sulfuric acid IS used to produce corn syrup...and I DID verify ...having taken chemistry...that's a STRONG acid...nope, not going to consume corn syrup if I can avoid it...and there WILL soon be health consequences of corn syrup soon....thinking class action lawsuit

As a kid bubble gum ice cream was the best. Chew pieces of gum balls in vanilla or strawberry ice cream yum!

The local tv station had a music show called Trip the Trio. Sponsored by Borden. Borden had a plant in the same city as the tv station (Davenport Iowa)

My dad always had to buy fruit flavored ice cream. I just wanted plain old ice cream. Of course I ate it but had to spit out the fruit bits. No healthy ice cream for me.

I always loved orange-pineapple ice cream. I don't know if Sealtest or Borden made it, but it was a summertime flavor around here. I can still get it, but I have to look around at a lot of stores to find it!!

Homemade has a great chocolate almond.And Kroger has a Private Selection Bordeaux cherry that is really good. I remember Bordon had a maple nut that had mixed nuts that was really good

I'm glad somebody else mentioned English Toffee. When my family moved to CA from PA in 1964, my aunt and uncle (who had already moved there) regularly bought English Toffee ice cream. I had never heard of it before. But I ate lots of it because my parents started buying it regularly too. It's been decades since I've had it, or seen it. And I'd love to have it again.

hmmm the emphasis on this video seems to be only Lady Borden or Sealtest...rightfully good, however other brands are totally ignored...how about Swift Premium Ice Cream? My first job in the mid 70s was Dipper Dan Ice Cream Shoppe which was in many malls... of which the ice cream was provided by Swift Premium... my extinct fave is Swift Premium's Cherry Cheesecake ice cream

today's "ice cream" cannot compare... given sugar has largely been replaced with corn syrup...not just a noticeable taste difference, yet very FEW people know that sulfuric acid IS used to produce corn syrup...take a course in chemistry and I will doubt you will ever again want to consume corn syrup. Not just that, but the labelling of such has changed...products that reduced the milk/cream content can NO longer be labelled as ice cream...no, they say "dairy dessert"... do check the labelling of your choice of such treat

Sorry but are you insane? Going on, and on, and on, about nothing, over the same 2 pictures for each flavour. And you've no idea what any of them tasted like! Yeah a chocolate-almond ice cream is probably nutty! Vanilla ice cream is sweet! Just like all ice cream! You're trying to spin 5 minutes of material into 13 minutes, and it just looks odd, the way you're saying nothing over and over. It isn't even 5 minutes of material, just a few old pictures of ice-cream ads. It's an interesting subject but you could have done SOMETHING to give it some content beyond going "yum yum yum!" for 13 minutes. Couldn't you have gotten hold of film of old TV and cinema ads? Or asked an old relative if they remember it?
