Bryan Greenberg of Jupiter says he corked bats for baseball star Pete Rose in the 80s when Rose played for the Montreal Expos and gives a deomstration.
Yeah, they all believed this dumb notion that it gave them magical powers and balls would “explode off the barrel” and it’d be so light a baby could swing it etc. lol
"This message brought to you by Mizuno Bats. Mizuno bats: Hard as $%&* to cork and built like steel. Look for Mizuno bats at Walmart and fine casinos everywhere as Pete Rose brings them in for collateral when he's low on cash."
Little peanuts in the grand scheme of things. Pete sanded the hitting surface of his bats flat the year he broke DiMagio's hit record then MLB changed rules to prohibit it. At the time it was perfectly legal in the sport though.. Despite everything anyone who ever watched Pete Rose play the game on a daily basis knows nobody played with as much ferocity than Pete Rose. They guy would run into a burning building to score runs..
Faster bat speed...let’s you wait a split second longer to see a pitch. More accurate swing. Not for power. I’ve read people who have his old bats had them x rayed and they were corked
@@pmac7113 that argument is bullshit. All you need is a lighter bat for speed because Pete wasnt a HR hitter. And corked bats have been proven to do nothing but be a placebo
Corked a few in the 80s, but never for pros....used a toolroom lathe and a steady rest, then packed powdered cork and the dowel as a plug. Never believed it made a difference in beer league play, but there is a psychological advantage. We believed that you had to turn the label away from the ball, or your bat might break...lots of myths....
Mythbusters did an episode that proved your theory correct. Corking the bat in fact made it overall less effective. It might be faster, thus in theory making it easier to make contact, but the trade off is it actually makes the ball travel less distance, which could easily could cause a double become a single or an out or a home run become a fly out. A player is in fact better off using a lighter bat than corking it if they were trying to get on base via a single or double.
YES YES YES .. You are the only other person I seen that knows the real way... Your supposed to grind the cork up to about the size of bbs.. and pack it tight in the bat.
Can someone please explain to me how cork improves a bats performance? Does it really matter if its corked or not? The ball only makes contact for a millisecond and it's only hitting the outside of the bat which is wood so not sure how it effects the ball. I'm just not understanding the physics behind it is all.
From what I've read, cork was thought to make the ball go further. In actuality, being a good absorbent of force and making the ball travel less distance?
It creates more of a bounce when hitting the ball because even tho its not hollowed, it does feel like it is because the center is still lighter then the wood surrounding it. So instead of a solid crack, you do feel a slight bounce off.
There's a video that talks about how when MLB cracked down hard on sticky fingers, there was a very sharp increase in batters getting hit. Once they got bored of enforcing it and stopped checking as thoroughly, people began to have better control of the ball and were less likely to accidentally crack skulls. So, officially, it is cheating, but it's cheating in a way that keeps players safe. Which is kind of a good thing. 😜 Anyway, the point is that there's worse things to worry about than sticky fingers.
I'm pretty sure you'd be wrong on that. The impact is going to be on the side of the disc (or, in your case, rod) of cork. So the compression and expansion shouldn't be any different. If it were being used like a cue stick, I would agree with your logic. But either of us could be wrong, the only way would be to test it out, which neither of us is likely to do. ☺️
I played with this too I took my cork and ground it up to about the size of #4 turkey shot, and packed it . This worked better than the method here.. objectively.. But the best one I made was with the ground up cork , but about 3/4 inch from the top, I put lead in... Then capped off with a thin peice of dowel.. That think was a hammer, reminded me of the old c core aluminum bats without the ping.. I think if you mixed the ground up cork with the right amount of wood glue, and corked it that way, you'd get all the advantages, but with a lot less risk of a break...never tested that theory, but I think it would work.. I know this, ground up cork is the way to go... Not ground to a fine powder, but about the size of a bb..
Pete told Vlad tv that he used corked bats in batting practice for extra confidence, what?? What is the great leap to think he actually used them in games then???
It's baseball, you steal signs you steal bases, you cheat its always been part of the game and its in the baseball players nature going way back to the beginning i dont look at Pete any less for this yes its likely he probably did it but he wa still the best hitter without it. Who cares he should still be in the Hall of Fame
@@brandonsims3339 If you're a moron it's a good comment. Imagine being a father and teaching your kids that if you lose it means the other person cheated. This generation is a disgrace
You'd think the guy that made a video to test the difference between corked and uncorked would have watched this video to see how it's really done... The one I saw drilled a hole in the bat and then drilled into a block of cork and put the powder in and then used wood glue. No compression at all. And then he couldn't even swing the bat so I went ahead and stopped watching halfway through 😂😂😂😂
@@deathninja16 Actually, I do, and I think this is a joke, too. Yes, all that glue, and Rose doctored his bats for years - I understand Rose has lost a lot of credibility over the years (earned), but there are some pretty small critics out there, too. Nice of the "former clubbie" to come out of the - ahem - "woodwork" 36 years later with this great tale.
Bullshit. Hustle was a ground ball hitter and legged out anything in the air. This guy's a corker but I seriously doubt Rose did that even when he got older. Like he said those Mizuno bats were hard af already
@@Andy-ph6mf on account of you being an idiot comply missed point, faster swing/less mass = slower swing/greater mass. And even that, the amount of weight they shed is not noticeable, stick a gum to the end of the bat and pick it up and see if you can tell the differance with gum and without.
This guy is lying. Pete Rose was a hard worker. He had his faults and issues but still deserves to be in the hall. He never corked his bat. Do you really believe this guy?
Your right Pete Rose himself never corked his own bats he had someone else do it for him. I do agree with you on the point that Pete Rose was a hard worker and that we all have our own faults.
Corked bats or not, I do not like Pete Rose. He lied about gambling on baseball for years and had the nerve to sue baseball when he was issued a lifetime ban. NO PLAYER, even 'Charlie Hustle' is above the game.
What are you saying. We literally have apps for gambling on sports. Baseball has had these as sponsors. It’s not like he bet against his team. Or cheated his way to a World Series or paid the other team to lose on purpose (not Joe Jackson obviously). Or took drugs that increased your physical ability.
I used to be more on the fence about him, but one day I actually got to meet him! Plus, he really is a down to earth guy who loves baseball - just as his sports analysis program appearances would show. I like him now. Great player and coach and really respects the game. He gambled ON (not against) his team, and voluntarily put himself on the banned players list. However, when a few years later it was decided that all players on that list should be restricted from the hall of fame forever, he was up in arms and sued. Of course. Wouldn't you? He didn't know he was 'agreeing' to HOF ineligibility. But I think that was MLB's plan from the beginning. They did him dirty, and that's not right.
@jeff afe Lol no. Cheating doesn't help at all if you suck. You have to have at least a little talent to use cheating to your advantage. Rose was a GREAT hitter. So any "cheating" would have just given him MORE of an edge. But he only bet ON himself & his team, never the other way around. I say that should be legal!
