Tesla shares soared in premarket trading Thursday after the automaker said it delivered about 90,650 vehicles in the second quarter, handily beating Wall Street expectations as the electric car maker’s sales withstood the economic downturn better than most competitors.
Analysts expected Tesla to deliver about 72,000 vehicles during the last three months, according to a consensus of analysts surveyed by FactSet. A broader set of analyst estimates, compiled by Bloomberg, set higher expectations - 83,000 vehicle deliveries in the second quarter.
Shares of Tesla zoomed nearly 9% to $1,219.02 in Thursday’s premarket, a day after closing 3.7% higher to $1,119.63.
Deliveries are the closest approximation of sales numbers reported by Tesla, and the electric car maker’s numbers held up significantly better than its competitors. Tesla’s deliveries fell by just 4.8% from the same quarter last year even as auto sales the world over, and especially in the U.S., slumped during the quarter after Covid-19 outbreaks led to health restrictions on households, travel and businesses, mass layoffs and wage cuts.

The margins with credits is a good point. But Tesla no longer has tax credits for US. Only the poor execution of the competition is paying credit money to Tesla now, so it’s the fault of the OEMs, Tesla is just better at the current regime.

Tend to disagree. he epitomizes the reasons why Legacy auto and Wall St are missing the point by focusing on profit per model without considering the entire package and in the process risking the very existence of their Companies. Tesla is a Tech Company and Energy Company that makes cars as well, their operations and management is completely unlike any automaker and thus they are constantly innovating and improving. Elon approached the Legacy OEM's when planning to build the Supercharger Network offering a partnership as having set his goal he had worked out all the requirements to achieve that and a Supercharger Network was essential as it made the EV a practical vehicle. They laughed in his face and as a result their EV sales have been far from Stellar. The number of EV's planned to build would consume more than the worlds battery production, thus GF1 in Nevada. And now the Legacy Auto and start ups have great vehicles coming to market, but face a battery shortage which Elon has forseen years ago

Tesla's gross profit margins are in the 25+% range for Model s and Model X and the 20% range for Model 3. Model Y is probably more profitable than Model 3 since it's simpler to manufacture. This is highly transparent and visible in their public financial filings. Those are very high profit margins, comparable to BMW or Mercedes and much higher than Ford, GM, Toyota, etc.

@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 4 года назад
Agree. Tesla's gross profit margin per car Model is in every report too. Not exactly secret. Tesla's gross profits are relatively huge and will grow with its increasing manufacturing scale and market share. EV cost is mostly driven by battery cost and Tesla has major advantages there too, by design.
@updlate4756
@updlate4756 4 года назад
I think you're misunderstanding what he meant. He was talking about transparency in the gross vehicle margins vs gross corporate margins. The company can report a positive gross vehicle margin and still lose money. If you look at Q1, where Tesla only made a $16 million profit, but their regulatory credit sales were effectively $350 million of pure positive margins, you can see the issue if those credits aren't a permanent fixture on their books. As to gross vehicle margins, Tesla uses some creative accounting. Where other companies may factor a portion (say 50%) or the totality (100%) of their R&D costs into COGS that gets applied to GVM, Tesla puts all of their R&D into the R&D line and none into COGS, so none of their R&D gets counted against GVM. Therefore, Tesla can state they make GVM that's well above other manufacturers by a huge percentage... but really it's just because they're using a different calculation... it's effectively an Apples to Oranges comparison.

@@waynerussell6401 Sandy would probably find similar margins for other OEM cars. But that isn't how gross vehicle margins are calculated. Many OEMs include R&D costs into their COGS line, which is accounted for in GVM. It isn't only a factor of production costs. Tesla doesn't include R&D into their COGS line, so their GVM calculation will return a higher margin than OEMs. There's a reason other OEMs can have significantly lower GVMs than Tesla, and yet still generate large corporate gross profits; whereas Tesla needs $350 million in regulatory credits in a quarter, plus tax credits to allow them to boost their MSRPs, to post a pretty minuscule net profit. $16 million profit on multiple billions of dollars in sales in Q1?

It's not exactly true that other OEMs saw 30% decline in sales while Tesla only saw a 5% decline. It may be true y/y... but remember that Tesla is a growth company that's increased their production rate by about 50% y/y. If it wasn't for the shutdown, Tesla would have produced ~150k cars, instead of the 82k they did produce, and probably delivered closer to 130k-140k instead of the 91k they did deliver. They were off about 30%-40% from what they were expected to produce/deliver had it not been for the shutdown. OEMs quarterly sales figures are fairly consistent y/y because they're producing approximately the same number of cars y/y, and selling to their piece of the market without any major growth. For those companies to shutdown, then obviously their decline will be more evident y/y. . Decline in deliveries as a factor of production capacity was similar across the board... and that's with traditional dealerships shutting down; whereas Tesla continue delivering throughout the quarter using contactless deliveries.

How else are you going to pick winners. There's this misconception that all automakers were treated equally when it came to credits... but the fact is, the timing lined up with Tesla's position, and effectively launched them well ahead of the competition. After the recession, the big 3 were fighting to survive, and no doubt the other OEMs were experiencing some pain. Tesla had no significant manufacturing to speak of, but they were right about to go live with the model S. They instantly got a $500 million loan from the Obama administration, then instantly were able to take advantage of lucrative federal and state tax credits, along with possibly even more lucrative CARB credit sales. Since BEVs were their only business, they had no choice to move forward with the billions of dollars of investment into it. The big 3 on the other hand were struggling not to die... so spending billions of dollars on technology that they didn't even know would work, or could be mass produced affordably didn't make a lot of sense. It turns out it did work, and Tesla was given a major boost... without having any of the expensive legacy costs that the behemoths of the auto industry had to deal with. Boomers retiring. Soaring healthcare costs. Small sedan demand falling off a cliff. Having to downsize. Etc.

Because most people are cautious when it comes to new things, particularly a "new thing" that will cost $40-60K! I would not own one, had I'd not driven a friends Model 3. Once I'd driven his Tesla, it was pretty much inevitable I'd buy one, regardless of the incentives (which had already halved at that time). Once you own one, the only downside is road trips (which is mitigated by Tesla having their own extensive supercharger network, and very high recharge rates). For 95% (at least) of travel, I find there is no going back. Once they (and I mean EVs in general) become commonplace, they can drop those incentives (which is why they roll-off after a manufacturer ships a certain number of units ... no more incentives for Tesla sales).

Sorry, but Tesla is now world leader also in efficient manufacturing. It is funny how these guys, who are supposed to understand these things and who gives advice (lol) still were not able to spot what was happening in front of them and they still struggle to get it. It is as if they have forgotten what it looks like when new successful companies are born. Sure they don't make a profit until they have grown, but it is not that difficult to predict their future if you are economically literate.

They own the market of the future, which is enough by itself. But they also have a totally different product and development philosophy which no other auto brand can match. You have statistically the 2nd most attractive employer (after spaceX) in the US that is way ahead in the market of the close future (which won't change regardless of carbon policies - in the next few years EVs will be cheaper to produce, faster, more torque and much cheaper to run) and they're growing consistently 50%/year. The fact that it's an auto stock is the only thing that has kept it so low in the past. Really it's a tech/future stock and people are starting to realise. On top of that, there is actually way more future potential to Tesla than the current market impact they have.
