@@GI876758 I tend to think there's truth in both sides of this story. I think most rich and powerful people do at least a little creative accounting. And I tend to think there were people in Nissan who were concerned about becoming a division of Renault, and that they worked to undermine him. The West has a corrupt justice system? Compared to what? Russia, where political opponents are assassinated? Japan, where they have a more than 99% conviction rate and if it's your word against a respected public official you're hooped? China where you can be held for years without access to a lawyer, or even told what specific charges they are making against you? The West is the only part of the world with a justice system that's even halfways fair, from what I can tell.

Technically correct but missing a few nuances. 1) if you are charged no matter what ~99.4% go to jail. 2) also ignores the fact that Japanese prosecutors only charge slam dunks, declining to lay charges in nearly half of all cases. Yes conviction in say the us is around 70%, if the us followed the Japanese way the 30% of cases that are found innocent in court just wouldn't go to court in the first place.

Basically there's a belief that the Japanese are very racist and hate foreigners. Carlos was seen as a celebrity hero after bringing nissan back from the brink of bankruptcy. This made the Japanese people who work in the auto industry really angry since it implied that the Japanese aren't fit to run a auto company and have to rely on foreigners to bail them out. There's also the 99% conviction rate in Japan which means that even if you're innocent you're still guilty. The fact that he's a foreigner and the 99% conviction rate shows that he will serve years in jail and not have a fair trial. But to answer your question, if you're suspected of guilt then you're guilty no matter your social status or wealth.

There so much iceberg beyond this. I have a fondness for studying the language. I also have learned about some social issues that tread on my optimism. Such as how the justice system is framed as coercive and incriminating rather than just. Or how the legal system enables strange legal holes in the rights of young people. For example there is a catch 22 where there is a two year window in young adulthood where orphans(?) are left to be homeless. Parents may not wave away their parental rights. As such, the 'orphaned' youth need a parents consent to rent until they are 21. Orphanages may also lack obligations to be responsible for them after 18 years of age. Then the case of in-family kidnappings and a lack of costudy enforcement because 'children are property in the eyes of the law' while child custody is a family matter. Learning about Honnemae/tatemae and uchi/soto also fosters conflicting feelings about living there. These social concepts seem like they enable pleanty of room for disastrous misunderstandings. For example I learned about about how somethings don't really mean what they would in a direct sense. A light example is how we should refuse offers. Serious examples would be, how not everyone is fully aware of some Uniquely Japanese social dynamics nor is everyone the most aware in occasionally serious social considerations, like stricter respect for unique hiarchies and etiquette. In these instances the uninitiated may figuratively 'step on toes' that should not be stepped on. I suppose learning about and becoming less ignorant is a solution, but I fear maybe it could be severly anxiety inducing to always be on alert or on awareness.
