Angelina Jordan Astar, this young norwegian lady is imo the best singer on the planet! I am 69 y old and have never heard a singer like her in my whole life.
This is not a studio production. Just a girl and a guitarist producing beauty. I believe this was better than the original because in addition to her wonderful vocals, she elicits feelings in the listener. I would probably have given her a 10 because I don't think it could have been done much better.
Once again you gave a HONEST reaction and I loved it. I am 76 years old and in all my years I have never had an artist affect me the way that Angelina does. She is one in a billion. Thanks again for the great reaction.
Maunalee, I just returned to this video by chance to find I had not posted a comment after watching it the first time. I loved your comments about how Angelina is able to convey so much sincere emotion at such a young age. I like to believe that Angelina is singing for the love of music and for all the underprivileged children she desires to help. Those are two very powerful reasons to be emotional.
IMHO, If she does not eventually achieve the same artistic and popular recognition as she matures that artists like Whitney Houston, Adele, Mariah, Celine Dion, Ella, Aretha, etc. It will not be because she is lacking in talent or ability in any way. But clearly and thankfully, her family and those that have been hired to help her with career choices are shepherding her in the right direction and not pushing her at all. And that makes me very happy for her because we have lost far too many stellar young talents over the years due to poor management and ineffective support from people around them. This is a 10 for me, because I think it is better than the highly produced studio original by Rihanna. What makes this even more impressive is the guitarist, Ivan Mendez, in his interview on Alan Papier's YT Channel, he said all these songs he played for her where unplanned, unrehearsed jam sessions. He would show up having no idea what song they were going to record. He would visit with her family, then after a nice dinner, they would discuss various songs they might do. Once they agree on a song he spends a few minutes going over the cord changes while Angelina gets the lyrics on her phone & says "just follow me" & off they go while grandma Mery records. Ivan said there is usually only 1 take unless he makes a big mistake because she never does. That explains his "stank face" throughout, because he's hearing it for the 1st time & he said it's really hard to concentrate on playing because he is so blown away. Who does that??? Her Norway guitarist, Egil Clausen, who played for her from 8-12, said the same thing about his home recordings with AJ, in his interview with Alan. Working that way, I think, helps explain why her live performances are better than her traditional studio recordings, IMO.

Her talent cuts through from the very first phrase...you are immediately drawn into her zone....it's absolutely mesmerising.....and you are right... to sing to guitar......you've got to be really good with phrasing, pitch, timing, emotion etc.....its all there....and you have to keep reminding yourself......what do most girls at that age...sound like singing...let alone a song full of complex emotional nuance and meaning.....i personally think she is one of the great originals coming into her own.....We are so fortunate to witness her development toward becoming a major artist......I hope she has very good people around her and survives the many pitfalls that stardom can bring. She seems well grounded at present....let us hope that she will have a very long, successful and balanced career....and bless millions with her amazing talent....thank you for this..really enjoyed it.

It's not everyday you watch a performance outside of a studio with just a guitar and the vocalist reading the music and it's so beautiful you almost cry and makes you feel and with all that impact from a 12 year old no less, she receives a 9? My current "favorite" from Angelina changes all the time, but this one held the position for quite a long time. As soon as she opens her mouth and starts to sing, it causes you to feel something. This was a song that I liked before Angelina did it, but she made it something even better (as always). Is there other covers you missed? Yes. You have done about 40 reactions to Angelina over the years, so by my calculations there are still about 100 that you missed. ;) If you need any ideas, check my "live through the years" playlist. Hey Rusty. This has also been one of my favorites since she performed it with Ivan shortly after receiving that terrific Neumann 102 mic for her 12th Bday. Question? I thought she recorded "All I Ask" a year ago, which would make her 15 at the time. Maybe I'm wrong.
@@wajj1842 It's difficult to say for sure how old she was in "All I Ask". The video was published in Mar 2021, (a couple months after she turned 15), but there is usually some time between recording and publishing. ...also when this was released it was apparent that it was the same studio as MM, so it was just assumed (then) that it was recorded in late 2020 when she was there for MM. However the release of several other videos from this studio throughout 2021 made it obvious that this was a studio that she had regular access to, so she could have done it any time. I think the 14 had just stuck in my mind because that was the initial thought when it published.
I love how expressive her hands are during this song. She is telling us the story of this song, drawing us in like she always does. The guitarist was Ivan Mendez, his facial expressions are great. In an interview he said the only time it took more than one take to record a song with Angelina was when he would get so mezmerized by her singing that he would lose his place in the song.

Thanks for another great reaction. I can never get enough of an Angelina fix each and every day. No matter how many times I hear one of her songs I am always pulled into it emotionally. She is indeed a once in a lifetime talent and we are so fortunate to be able to listen to her as she continues to grow and develop. She, IMHO, is destined to join the pantheon of the greatest artists of all time.
These recordings with Ivan Mendez are wonderful. A casual setting, with a raw recording so you can hear every breath and fingers sliding across the strings. With two talented artist pouring their souls into it you get this amazing performance with an intimate feeling as if they are sitting just across the room. Comparing it to the original I feel Angelina voice has more warmth and emotion.
I agree, love the chemistry they had and from what Ivan said many of their recordings has yet to find it's way to the net. Hopefully they all do one day.
Angelina just has more flavor to her voice than other artist, this is not to say that the original artist are not great in their own right, but Angelina just makes everything she does sound better. If she was a cook, she would be a master chef.
I think Angelina is suppose to come out with a new album soon. Being with Republic records it will obviously be polished and young Angelina will be all grown up. I saw an interview with Ivan, her guitar player, and he was saying that when he would go to her house, they would not plan what song they would do ahead of time. They would talk about songs after he got there and just randomly pick a song, and then she would do this one take wonder, with her needing to read the lyrics because she had not practiced it first. He said that blew his mind as much as her voice did. I saw Rusty answered you but when you said if there are any you missed and I thought about 100 and I second his idea of "I am Still Holding out for you" masterpiece.

Very nice comment, Gary. I watched that concert more than 10 times & I think every one of those guest musicians were totally blown away by her. Don't forget Victoria Fatu who played piano for 1 song, but something came up & Shelly Berg filled in.
This performance is one of Angelina's best. I find that it is also the best example of Angelina using her tone in her low register. Her "How Great Thou Art" goes even more into her lower register. That piece seems like more of a study in singing in that register and doesn't have the interpretive brilliance of what you just reviewed, here. This version of "Stay" is simply remarkable in tone and interpretation without the need for any diva-like over singing. A super "tasty" rendition.

The thing is, Rhianna's original is truly exceptional, but that being said, she in no way puts the song across with as much emotional penetration as Angelina. It's the same with Adele, for I believe non-jazz singers, no matter how great, can natch the feeling of ultimate depth that only a true jazz singer can provide, and I believe Angelina does reign as 'The Queen Of Jazz'.
Great reaction Maunalee! Angelina was 12 when she sang this. IMO she sang it way better than Rihanna. She reinvented the song. BTW, the guitar player was Ivan Mendez. I don't think you reacted to "Yesterday" yet. It's on her cover channel and it's gorgeous.

It's interesting that the set of recordings where Ivan Mendez is accompanying her are probably some her best material from that age, as well as most watched on RU-vid. There are (that I have been able to find) only 6 songs up on RU-vid with the two of them. Though, there is a "new" video on her Patreon page showing him accompanying her at the 2018 "Gala de Danza" in Los Cabos, Mexico. There is also a video showing Egil Clausen accompanying her for an (apparently) private concert on the French Riviera in 2014.
Ivan said in his interview that there were maybe ten that they did together at this time when she was twelve. One is "How Great Thou Art", but luckily a fan grabbed it before it was pulled. But the reason I am adding a comment today is that I saw the movie "Ambulance" today and the soundtrack had a version of California Dreaming by Bobby Womack I had never heard before. Wanted to recommend it to you, and secondly, thought it would be a great song for Angelina Jordan to cover ( at least in the smoky way the first half is sung, not the jazzy second half). Maunalee, another fair and honest reaction. Your comments were spot on regarding her ability to express emotion at such a young age for adult events she has never experienced. It is magical and I have never witnessed it in any other young singer in all my years. Her voice has changed since 12 years old, but her technical abilities have grown even more with the ability to perform vocal acrobatics, for lack of a better word, that are undetectable and subtle as they should be. U Tube should be set up in a way that once reactors reach a certain popularity, and start actually making money (thanks to Angelina) then she should be able to get a small percentage go into her patron account. Fair enough.
@@leebrn8588 we have no control over RU-vid unfortunately but Andy and I have spoken about it and feel that the best solution would be that when a reactor does a video involving an artist, that both the reactor and the artist should get a credit for their algorithm. Simple

Maybe she has just a natural sincerity that she brings to any emotion state described in a lyric. For me this is in her top 5 covers. It might not be technically perfect but the performance is engrossing.
If you want an amateur RU-vidr who is not well known, I would suggest Lemonflower. The video quality and audio sync will be a bit rough and many of her covers include a bit obscure but it's all about the ability. I would suggest Indigo Girls cover of Blood and Fire, Patsy Cline a capella cover of Crazy, Kris Kristofferson cover of Bobby McGee. Check out her channel. Just know that many of her uploads are old by YT standards.
So, simply stated, you are my unabashed favorite. More than any reviewer, you ingest performances..There may be other persons who are more technically savvy, but that isn't what I look for in these reviews. Kudos. As to AJ, this is one of her best at that age, along with Lana Del Rey's "Born To Die". I'm not crazy about her Adele covers, but Adele is the pinnacle, IMO.
What you're saying is true about emotions. I believe that's why so many people speak about her as an old soul. That makes sense to me .. and that she knows way more than, say, a 6 year old (like in 'I Have Nothing') would know about deep human emotions. I also believe, myself, that Angelina's objective in singing is to reach people, touch their hearts, rather than looking for them to admire her or her voice. She doesn't ever sing to "show off" what she can do .. but what she seems to do is enter 100% into not just the music, but the story she's telling (she's a brilliant storyteller) and she closes her eyes to be fully inside of that story and blend emotion into musicality in such a way that she has all of us either in goosebumps or in tears. She has been blessed with a grandmother who is also a savant and has held her spirit and her gift with care and huge support. I have often wondered how many savants have perhaps been born into families where nobody understands their depth of passion and talent and natural wisdom and they end up squelched and unsupported and without a way to express themselves or share what gift they were born with. Maunalee .. you should listen to some of her newer videos .. just to see the change. The new My Funny Valentine or various tiktoks, like House of the Rising Sun or Adele's Love is a Game .. She is so much stronger now and at 16 we are starting to stop the idea of "how can she whatever at only this age", even though that may follow her for a few years more. We shall see. There is now a nice video interview of Ivan and he tells us all about what the process of working with Angelina looked like and how most of these were first takes or sometimes second .. and not edited at all. idk if you heard the demo she did for baby fuzz " I'm still holding out for you", the audio leaked and a fan put a videp to it. there never was a video of her singing it cause her mom didnt want it relased because of the song being about suicide. but awsome to listen to.
